Believe the hype! Best breakfast I've had in a long time. I got the Migas. Came with refried beans and pepitas. The potatoes were so good. Perfectly cooked. I've been to other breakfast places in Santa Fe and hate biting into a crunchy ass potato. Coffee was hot and fresh at 1:30pm I really appreciated that, had three cups! Please don't walk away from this restaurant when you see the front entrance! Although a little worn, it had too many great Yelp reviews not to walk away. Came here for brunch, their menu has a few American meals from egg sandwiches/wraps/bagel with ham/sausage/bacon , pancakes, French toast or omelettes. The rest of the menu has a Santa Fe Mexican flare and variety with chorizo, Chile sauces, hatch green Chiles, carne asada, carne adovada, Chile Relleno omelettes and more. I got the Huevos Rancheras (over potatoes not tortillas) with red and green sauce - amazing, comes with beans and a sopaipilla (slightly fried, but light fluffy and tasty)! Hubs had the Migas, like Mexican scrambled eggs with goodies of tomatoes, onions, cheese, jalapeños) seasoned well and came with potatoes, beans and freshly made flour tortillas. We wanted good food, friendly service and no frills. And this was it! We got into Santa Fe at 6 pm on a Saturday. I researched places along the way for a tasty, authentic Mexican family friendly dinner. We were greeted right away by a gentleman who told us to sit where ever. He came and took our drink order. Wow! The horchatas are ginormous! Our waitress was so sweet, friendly and came by to check on us but there wasn't a rush. And we were given salsa and chips to start. My husband ordered the combinación with green sauce. The tamale was spicy! But all was delicious. My son ordered the combinacion Christmas style (with green and red sauce). I ordered the chicken and guacamole enchiladas with a sopepilla. It was delicious. The rice and beans and hominy were all delicious. None of the food was overly salty or cheesy which was perfect. Both the red and green sauces had some heat. I didn't find the sauces overly spicy even the tamale I tried from my husband had a bit of heat. He found it to be incredibly spicy. I thought the salsa with the chips was spicier. My youngest son had the kids beef taco. He enjoyed it so much. Sopapillas and tortillas were so soft, and tasty. I loved drizzling honey on the sopapilla. We want good food and don't need it to be a fancy place. We were all happy and had full bellies. The food was okay, but the ambulance wasn't there for us. I highly recommend eating here if you have no where else to go, but we won't go here again. Just ordered for pickup tonight- visiting from out of state and staying in a hotel just for tonight. Decided to order here because of all the great reviews- but was left very very disappointed. First- the menu is not very accurate to the prices or the amount of food you'll receive. For 18 dollars on our chicken fajita order we received enough meat and toppings for only 1 tortilla worth- which was perfect because they only gave us 1 tortilla. The process of getting this tortilla was painful, as they originally left it out of our order. We called them and the lady on the phone was very curt and unhelpful. We needed to get our missing tortilla and return another dish that was just awful (flour chicken tacos, they looked truly pitiful- I regret not taking any pictures- absolutely no seasoning and abysmally small portions), so we drove back and they only gave us 1 tortilla and a PARTIAL refund on the horrible tacos that were untouched. Also no apology for forgetting food. If you are dining in you might have more luck with the service and meals- but you will surely regret ordering to go. read more

We couldn't get in to the fancy downtown tourist New Mexican restaurant. Too bad so sad.....NOT! the reviews said all I needed to know. 4.5 miles later, in a working class part of town in a little humble strip mall, we were welcomed like family to El Comal and fed a gorgeous and generous dinner at a tiny price. Ordered a combo plate because I wanted to taste everything and knowing I couldn't finish it. Well I came close and it was WORTH IT. Partner ordered two tacos and an enchilada. Dinners come with large portions of rice, beans, and pozole (hominy) and a huge beautiful sopapilla. Save some sopapilla for dessert, there's a container of honey on the table for it. Salsa and sauces, both red and green, very delicious. The red carries a KICK! Tourists, leave your fancy hotel for a while and drive to where the working locals live. What a hidden jem where the locals come for some amazing authentic southwestern Mexican American food. I have not seen Migas on the menu anywhere I have went so far. They are amazing especially adding meat to the dish (normally it's more of a vegetarian dish with eggs).The sopaipilla's are a must to have they are huge airy and very tasty. I went here a month ago with some friends and I couldn't wait to come back. I don't visit Santa Fe often but I have thought of this restaurant since my first visit and I finally came back. My first experience was just as amazing as my second experience. The waitress was the same both times and very kind and nice. The food was delicious. The variety offered here ranges from American and New Mexican....all amazing. The homemade tortillas were wonderful! The chicharron burrito was fabulous, crunchy chicharrones and homemade red chili. Iced mugs for beers were also a pleasant surprise. They do it right here. This place is a little whole in the wall so don't let the outside appearance cloud your judgement. We love MEXICAN food more than Tex-mex. This is it! Hole in the wall in a nondescript location, but you will taste 100% authentic, delicious and reasonably priced Mexican food. Be warned that the salsas are "hot" by American standards, not burn-your-mouth-I-need-water hot, but hot enough that I would recommend that unless you know you like it, get the red or green on the side and add to your taste. DO not miss the Sopapillas...delicious "pillow tortillas" is the best I can describe them, not the small dessert bite from the west coast. read more

This place is authentic New Mexican cuisine located next to Fairfield Inn. We stayed at Fairfield on our way back to Taos Ski Resort and were looking for a good local cuisine. After much debate on a few local restaurants, family decided to go to El Comal. We ordered Carno Adovado stuffed Sopapilla, smothered Carne Adovado burrito, pork tamales and fish tacos. All the entrees were excellent but fish tacos were exceptional. It is hard to find good fish tacos with grilled fish and this place nailed it. Both red and green chiles were very good as well. Staff is very friendly. They serve chips & salsa and sopapillas during the meal. I ordered the crispy chicken tacos and I can say with confidence they were the worst I've ever had. The "crispy" tortillas are store bought and tasted stale. The chicken was so wet like it was boiled. Absolutely everything lacked flavor. I left feeling sad because the high rating is what drew us in. Hoping this was just a fluke but not coming back a second time to find out. Read the other 1-2 star reviews. Stopped here because of the reviews and it's location near where we were staying as we traveled through Santa Fe. The place doesn't look like much but we decided to try it as a take out order. The order was for a grande combo and burrito dinner. Chips and salsa were extra for the take out. Staff were friendly and answered questions. Seemed kind even to the homeless people who came in while we were waiting for our food. The servings were reasonable. A lot of chips were offered although they seemed store bought. The salsa was quite spicy as was the red sauce. Not much flavor but a lot of spice. Chicken was moist and flavorful making for a good taco. The beef was ground to ash and lacked any flavor. Didn't look or taste appealing so that was a waste. Tortillas also seemed store bought and were fried to a crisp tasting like cardboard with melted cheese on it. (I've made better quesadillas at home.) The guacamole was not good, not fresh and also seemed out of a jar. Refried beans tasted as though they came out of a can. Overall, the food was a big disappointment and definitely overpriced. Next time we are visiting the area we will pass and try somewhere else. read more
