Huevas rancheras.
Judy B.

Back again for breakfast....twice during our week long stay in SF. Great service. The place was packed at 9:30. This week I had the megas and then the papas and eggs. The sopapillas are excellent and a huge jug of honey on the table. Still in a dumpy strip center, but served the best breakfast in town. The wife had the huevos rancheros and then the pork chop and egg special. Both times we took food home for breakfast tacos the next day. Great place.

Other half of combo platter- cheese enchilada (I asked for the red sauce on the side), rice, beans, posole and the sopapilla

The people there were very nice. I wish the food was a little better. Start with the chips and salsa. The salsa was great but the chips were way over cooked. The combo platter was good but not great. My biggest complaint was the sopapilla- it was fried in oil that needed to be changed. The location is an old strip mall - blink and you will miss it and then you have to turn around and try again.

While passing through Santa Fe, we stopped at El Comal for dinner, and we're so glad we did! I ordered the green chile stuffed sopaipilla, my husband had the ground beef chalupas, and my son had the steak and eggs -- everything was delicious. The complimentary chips and salsa were a great start, but the real highlight of the meal was the fresh, warm sopaipillas served with honey. They were easily some of the best sopaipillas we have ever had! The staff was friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit. This is definitely a spot we'll remember and make a point to stop at again the next time we're passing through Santa Fe!

Migas (eggs scrambled with onion, tomatoes, and jalapeños)

El Comal is outside of downtown Santa Fe and is an old school Mexican restaurant. We noticed what looked like locals only and no tourists dining for breakfast. That's a great sign and why we went. My wife ordered the huevos ranchero with the green and red sauce and I ordered the migas with a side of bacon and green chili sauce. We both chose the fresh made to order sopasillas instead of the tortillas. The chili sauces have a great spice kick and flavor. The dinner menu lioked good too. We would definitely come back.

Triple Enchilada
Robert M.

Visiting Santa Fe, picked El Comal for its high ratings and wanting Mexican food. Appears to be a favorite with the locals. Ordered the Triple Enchilada: beef, cheese and chicken with beans and rice, corn tortillas. The enchiladas were covered with a red flaming hot sauce, a distracting heat covering the good food underneath. Scrapped chili sauce off to the side and it was all good. Second order was a Taco salad with beef. Fresh lettuce, good beef and all the fixings. Chips and salsa appeared to in house made, deep fried. Canned sodas for beverages. Service was fast and friendly.

Great fajitas. The steak was perfectly cooked, flavorful, and really satisfying. The sopapilla was hot, fluffy, and paired well with the meal. The green chili was very good too. I came in just a few minutes before closing, but they were still kind enough to accommodate me without making me feel rushed. A very satisfying experience.

Great service, nice staff. Clean restaurant. Prompt service. Food quality was 5/10, presentation and flavors were a little muted. But I'm used to bold Sonoran flavors and tortillas harina that have lard and are thinner. The red chili is great, the heat on their salsa is good too! gracias , soy rato!

Best REAL New Mexico food I've ever had - breakfast or dinner. It's a locals spot which ranks it even higher in my book.

Good service. The food is great. And you can see that with all the locals that eat there.

This is a simple family restaurant with red booths and a no frills plastic booths filled patio. We were pleased they had a liquor license! Turns out it was a great choice for dinner, even though I didn't have a huge appetite tonight. No chips and salsa for free in this town, we plowed into drinks and entrees instead. Our server was a patient and relaxed young man, happy to take my order and then let me change it before he left the table. The $8 sangria was huge and boozy, in a sweet and very good way. Dos XX bottle came with a chilled salted mug and lime. Prices were reasonable. Our server was excited to serve me my first Frito pie ($9) with red chile, no beans, it was the perfectly sized smaller portion meal for me with no leftovers! I ate all of it, then maybe had a little regret. I wish I had ordered Christmas style to try both the red and green sauces, but the red was pretty spicy and I felt it the next day. Covered in lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream, it doesn't look like much on a plate but I am a big fan of Frito pie now! Husband had the Grande combo with beef taco, cheese enchilada (red), chicken tostada, rice, posole and beans. This is where Valentina's shines! The tostada chicken was extremely tender and moist shredded meat in a fluted blue corn tortilla cup. The cheese enchilada was gooey and perfect, the red sauce dark, rich and earthy. The beef taco crispy and satisfying. It seems in NM that posole is served with everything, feels strange to this Arizona gal to have hominy and pork as a side. It isn't super flavorful but its traditional, so we picked at it. This plate came with a flour tortilla to boot, overkill! Rice and beans were solid contributors, but this was a huge plate and a struggle to finish! In the end, it ended up being one of our most economical and memorable dinners in our week in Santa Fe, thanks Valentinos!

As we pulled up, it looked pretty crowded, a few families waiting outside. I checked on the wait time for 3 & was told 20-25 minutes. We don't consider that an excessive wait time any time we go out. And being from out of town, it would've taken us at least that long to find another spot & probably would've had a wait at any other restaurant. There was plenty of space to wait in front of the restaurant, it was shaded and the weather was nice. I don't know how long we waited for a table, but it seemed to be less than quoted. Once seated, we were served drinks right away. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I ordered blue corn cinnamon pancakes with a side of bacon. The bacon was cooked crisp, just how I like it. The pancakes were really good! Different from anything I've had before. My husband had chilaquiles, those were really good. And my son got a traditional breakfast. The menu said it came with fries, which were more what we called breakfast potatoes. That was a good thing! Those potatoes were so good! The restaurant looked to be well staffed, everyone working and taking care of customers. This is for sure a place I'd recommend and would return to on future visits to Santa Fe.

The BLAT was delicious, on your choice of bread (rye), which was generously portioned with perfectly crispy French fries on the side. Very glad I did--we nabbed a courtyard table, and enjoyed our time immensely. It's a beautiful, comfortable spot. The food was satisfying and generous. Really recommend the corn chowder--tons of flavor, great consistency. The huevos rancheros were solid, not spectacular. Just not as spicy as I would have liked and the pintos were just average. We were not able to score one of the coveted reservations for dinner, so we braved the walk-in queue in the courtyard, which actually moved quite fast -- with a wait time of about 45 minutes for a party of two on a weekday night. The menu features all the classic New Mexican flavors you'd expect, from enchiladas to burritos, and the kitchen is happily open to accommodating most dietary restrictions. At our server's recommendation, we split a bowl of the Vegetarian Posole ($9). While it was packed with corn, butternut squash, green chile, and garlic, we both agreed it didn't quite live up to the massive hype. On the other hand, the entrees completely redeemed it. I thoroughly enjoyed the Tamale Plate ($18.50) -- two tamales (your choice of red pork chili or green veggie chili -- I did one of each) served with beans, Spanish rice, and a side of red or green chile that packs the perfect punch. My dining companion loved the Fish Tacos ($17.25), which came loaded with sautéed cod, avocado, cabbage, and a beautifully citrus-forward pico de gallo. Both of us thought the portions were filling without leaving us feeling stuffed and the flavors were completely spot on. Overall, a great 4-star experience with wonderful flavors, great value, and solid service despite the chaotic dinner rush!
