First time trying this spot. Went with a friend and a couple of his cousins. We had difficulty finding a place to eat because every time we thought of something we wanted, we found they were closed on Mondays. The guys with me recommended Red Enchilada due to the pupusas not being premade and frozen. Service was friendly and helpful. I tried a drink, called Marañon, which according to Google is the cashew apple. Pupusas were excellent! Especially with the salsa and pickled cabbage w/veggies added on top. The Super Breakfast plate was good too, but was pretty standard (eggs, carne adovada, potatoes, beans). The pupusas were a stand out and I'd definitely go back for those. My friend had to send his steak back because he wasn't cooked the way he asked, but another one in our party also had a steak and we think they just accidentally swapped their steaks when they plated them. They gladly took it back to cook it more. Good prices, and a very large menu too. read more

The Red Enchilada was a restaurant that I never reviewed, because it was so good, I didn't want a lot of people going and crowding me out. We have been going there for years! But today, January 13, 2025 it all changed. It's sad when restaurant owners turn the product of years of hard work over to children... who screw it up. This place used to have really good food for really good prices. Now the prices have doubled.. DOUBLED! And the proportions have dwindled. The food used to taste good, but now all you taste is Cumin.. cumin, cumin cumin! And now the service is lousy! In the background you hear loud boom boom music coming from the kitchen! Which They turned it down when we asked, but then cranked it back up, when some little chica in the kitchen loudly complained! We couldn't even hear each other! Then, perhaps the lasziest server ever, would start singing with the "music". So obnoxious! They have wonderful soups on Sundays, but now they want 14 bucks for a bowl of soup!! FOURTEEN DOLLARS! FOR SOUP! Big Jim and Smalls do NOT pay 14 bucks for chicken soup! EVER! I would not recommend going here. I'm still trying to get the taste of cumin out of my mouth! read more

Im conflicted between the stars so if I could I'd give a 3.5 rating. A couple reasons for that... first of all this place is like a hidden gem! You wouldn't know it from the outside but it's a nice place inside. We went with friends who raved about the popusas and curtido which I'd never had before and that's what we all ended up getting. I got two which had beans and chicharrones with cheese and one with calabazitas and cheese. I also got to try the one that was just chicharrón but it wasn't to my liking. I wasn't a big fan of the curtido which is cabbage, jalapeños, carrots, and onions in a lemon vinegar mixture. I thought it tasted kind of stale or like it had been left out instead of refrigerated. However, our friends loved the curtido and went through it like crazy so I'm going with it's a matter of taste. Your supposed to put it on top of the popusas and eat it like together. Another thing I'd say to watch out for is that parties of 5 or more automatically get charged 18% gratuity and you can't split the check plus the check doesn't indicate the charge for the food plus the tip just the total so if your not careful about what your food cost should be, then you might end up paying way more than you intended too. I think it's super important to tip for quality service but I think it's also important for restaurants to itemize or indicate what the charges are for especially if something is automatically added to the ticket. Overall though I won't mind stopping by again and just getting the popusas! read more

Went back again, still great, read original review, I'm just updating so next year I can remember what I've already tried and what I want to order next. This time I got the tri-colored enchiladas w/o rice with more pozole and beans, green chile. The pozole was a little more watery than I remembered and kind of affected the beef enchilada near it but it had good flavor. My favorite of the three enchiladas was the cheese. I think next time I need to order the cheese enchiladas and ask for just beans or beans + pozole. I was stuffed after my meal + included sopapailla. Hubby doesn't really care for pozole so he should order with just beans :) read more

I was looking for cheap eats passing through Santa Fe. I liked the name I liked the reviews and I felt this place lived up to the positive praise it got. A humble little building to be sure, but who cares? The service was very fast (and You are Supposed to pay at the counter---so the one review complaining about that was misguided. My friend and I got the salsa and warm chips for 2.95 (very good) got the tri-colored enchilada plate for 9.95 and combo burrito 8.00 christmas style (ie red and green chili sauce) (we made two meals out of our food. I have passed this place a few times since we moved to Santa Fe.. I finally looked it up on Yelp and after noticing their reviews decided to take a look at the menu pictures here, noticed their cheese enchiladas were only 7.50 so it it wasn't good it would not be a big deal.. I called to place the to ho order, I arrived about 10 mins after the call, get a check for 11.24 so I asked for the itemized copy and it's $10.81 more than I thought the dish was but it was probably a very old menu picture so I'm writing this to let the owners know perhaps they can update them, but the main reason I decided to write this was to let people know "the employees up charge their tips" it's not the amount it's the fact that they do it that I don't think is right and hopefully they bring it up to their attention. The food was just ok, not at all the enchilada I anticipated from a restaurant called enchiladas, I'm Mexican so perhaps my expectations where a little high but again I was going after the raving reviews, there was a stuffy smell inside as if it needed ventilation.. air flow. I had read some decent reviews for the Red Enchilada restaurant, and so we decided to give it a chance. The young waiter was very helpful and friendly. Because I wanted a smaller portion, he allowed me to get an enchilada off the kids menu, which was very nice. The chicken enchilada with red and green chili (Christmas) was definitely the best part of the meal for me. Comparatively, I have had much better green chili in Santa Fe, but I have to say the red chili was pretty tasty. The side of rice was crunchy and the beans were nothing special. My husbands stuffed sopapilla was okay. It's the green chili that puts any Mexican food over the top for us, and this green Chili was pretty average. We did enjoy the sopapillas that came with our meal. For my husband, that was the best part Of the meal. read more

This is a true culinary gem in Santa Fe. I grew up in Santa Fe, and finding excellent, reasonably priced restaurants is always a chore. This tiny, tucked away, genuine South American food is just awesome. The decor consists of murals and modest artwork. The staff is very nice, attentive, and accommodating. Their enchiladas are delicious. The tortillas taste freshly made, and the green chile sauce has the perfect mixture of citrus and spice. We go there whenever we venture north to see my parents. Bro J found Red Enchilada while looking for a new place to try. The Salvadoran influence was interesting to me since our Tres Banderas closed in the St Louis area. We liked the Salvadoran style tamales and the food in general. Bro J and I ordered a ton of food and split it. There were pupusas; one stuffed with calabacitas and cheese and one revueltas style. In this case it is pork with some beans. These had a nice texture. They are kind of like two handmade tortillas with filling in between, then sealed around the edges and fried. They had good flavors alone but are great with the curtido (sort of a slaw/cabbage relish) and a bottle of a thin salsa to squirt on top. The tipico platter of Salvadoran favorites included simple scrambled eggs, black beans, Salvadoran style sour cream and delicious fried plantains and seriously heavy homemade tortillas to eat it all with. We also ordered two Salvadoran tamales. These are large, wrapped in banana leaves and steamed. The masa is light and almost fluffy. We had one filled with chicken and one with pork. Both had some potato. These are very good and I ate mine with the excellent bright red chile. There is a lot of masa, but it is good. J and I also liked the posole, which was a little different than typical. The corn kernels are more broken up than usual making it thicker. It is served plain, but you get red and green chile to jazz it up. Ms T had a ground beef taco that was well seasoned and one of chicken that was actually very good for a change. The chicken was stewed and shredded so it was moist and was also seasoned. TT's chiles rellenos were served with very good green chile. We had a very enjoyable meal and liked the Salvadoran dishes as a change of pace. I would go back for the pupusas, tamales and posole. read more

Okay folks if you want your bang for your buck -come here. Prices are affordable and the portions are big! They are known mainly for their enchiladas. We had the combination plate with green chili sauce. This includes a beef taco, pork tamale (to die for) and cheese enchilada. Also comes with rice and beans and pozole(large white corn/ hominy). Also the shrimp enchiladas with red sauce is amazing. Their red sauce is soooo good!!! The meals also come with sopapillas with honey (puffed bread) it's a little run down but who cares?! We were so excited to try this place based on the glowing reviews of others. We ordered the chicken enchiladas and a taco plate (one each beef & chicken) for dinner. Waitress was quick to take and deliver our order, but she never returned. Never received our check so we eventually went to the counter to pay. The dive decor was as expected, but batting flies circling the table was a little annoying. As for the food - it was okay but somewhat bland, even the green and red chili was lacking in flavor. Posole was a fun addition but it too needed a dose of hot sauce (nowhere to be found). Every time we eat here (usually once every 2 weeks) I tell my boyfriend it's Santa Fe's best kept secret. It's never busy and always has parking. The food is consistent, very inexpensive, and they always deliver great service. This is my favorite restaurant in Santa Fe. I pretty much only get two dishes here, either the tri color enchiladas, or the combo burrito. Both are excellent, and the staff are very friendly as well. The prices here are cheap for this town, and when you combine that with the friendliness of the staff, you get a very rare gem for Santa Fe.
