This is my favorite restaurant in Santa Fe. I pretty much only get two dishes here, either the tri color enchiladas, or the combo burrito. Both are excellent, and the staff are very friendly as well. The prices here are cheap for this town, and when you combine that with the friendliness of the staff, you get a very rare gem for Santa Fe. If you are unfortunate enough to visit this town, you should definitely give this restaurant a try. Just remember that they're closed on Tuesday's. read more

This guy I work with who claims to be one of the twelve who will usher in heaven on earth in 2031 owed me about ten bucks and said he'd like to take me to lunch or dinner to pay me back. He suggested Red Enchilada and who am I to turn him down and just take the money, thus potentially thwarting a possible gold star in 2031? What a quaint little gem this place is. It's an El Salvadorean hole in the wall and we were the only two blancos in the joint. I got the chicken enchiladas with green chile and he got the taco plate and a papusa. Then he started to sing a little jingle about it, something like 'Oh papusa...Oh papusa' in a charming soprano. He moved to Prescott, AZ the next day. I arrived for lunch around 11:30 AM and found there was plenty of space in the parking lot and the restaurant was not crowded. A friend had told me that the portions were small, so I ordered the combination plate AND a chicharron pupusa. It was a mistake. My friend had exaggerated. The combination plate was very large, with a taco, tamale and enchilada, all of which were excellent. The plate also had refried beans, rice and a llittle posole and I tried a little of each, but was not impressed. The entrees were the star of this plate. My chicharron pupusa, however, was heavenly. It was light and extremely tasty. The curtido (cabbage salad) was served in a very large container with tongs to serve yourself and a bottle of sauce on the side. The curtido was very good and the sauce was very special. I'd say whether you are going for Salvadorean or New Mexican, the Red Enchilada is affordable and inviting, with excellent food. read more

This is the best (and least expensive!) places in Santa Fe to get fantastic enchiladas. I mean, they are good! My favorite is the tri-color enchilada dinner. That is 1 chicken, 1 cheese, and 1 ground beef enchilada smothered in your choice of red/green chile. It comes with rice, beans, posole, and a sopapilla. We always get chips and salsa for appetizer. Their salsa is the best in town-- very different than most places and hard to adequately describe. Try it, you'll be hooked but you won't be able to really describe it either. Dinner for 2 comes in at about $35, and I'm usually too stuffed to walk. The surroundings are humble but clean. It looks sketchy, but don't be fooled. It's good. There are plenty of things on the menu that I always look at and think about trying...but I always get the same thing! read more

We were looking for yummy Mexican after our trip to Meow Wolf before hitting the highway back to Denver. Picked The Red Enchilada at random and could not have been more pleased with our choice. We were looking for fresh fish and found this place via Yelp. My husband tried the tilapia--yum! It was cooked just right and he ate every morsel. Great, fresh food, excellent service, and good sensitivity to dietary restrictions. I ordered a vegetable enchilada, and the vegetables were fresh and delicious, with good variety. The rice was flavorful and just the right texture, and the servings were generous. I have a dairy allergy, so specified no butter, cheese, or sour cream on the enchiladas and tamales I ordered. Our server, Miranda, took the extra step of asking the kitchen whether there was butter in the rice or beans and substituted whole beans for the refried beans for me, which I really appreciated--most people don't think of doing this, and I hadn't specifically asked her to. She was sweet and conscientious, and the service was quick. This place is not much to look at but the food and service are spectacular! My dad loves the enchilada plate with a cheese, chicken, and beef rolled enchilada plus rice, beans, and posole. I tried the combo plate that included a taco, tamale and enchilada plus beans, rice, and posole. The taco was okay the tamale was good and the enchilada was amazing. I stopped in for a quick bite before catching my flight back to California. I was pleasantly surprised that it was my favorite meal during my 5 day stay in Taos and Santa Fe. I'm not saying it was the best food I had while in New Mexico. But it was the most fun, interesting...and by far the least expensive meal of the whole trip. the sopapilla (fried bread) was a treat and so delicious with the honey-as-condiment. For my entree I had the combo plate. the taco and tamale were solid and the enchilada was particularly good. and the posole along with the rice side was a nice bonus and added variety to the accompanying starches I've never had before. In short, it was a good mexican meal with unique southwestern touches that we dont have in Socal....and it was really nice. the service was prompt and friendly too. Flipping awesome, everything is scratch made. Delicious and great atmosphere. Three of us were gluten free and we had lots of options with helpful staff. We had to ask the staff after our first bites to verify it was gluten free because it was so perfect. It was. The fried Tilapia was fantastic. We loved the cokes in bottles from Mexico. If you want good, authentic New Mexican food, this is the place to go. The food is incredible, the staff is oh-so friendly and attentive, and the bill was impressively reasonable (less than $40 for a family of four - can you say "steal"?) Back to the food. We got the blue corn enchiladas - one with red chile and another with green - beef enchiladas, and chicken tamales. The plates come with thick refried beans, fluffy rice, chewy posole, and the best sopapilla I've had in a while. The tortillas are fresh, the masa moist, the meat tender, and the chile SPICY. I would say it was ok . My husband and I came because of the high yelp reviews but I would not recommend it . My husband is savadorian and they were nothing like popusas . And Mexican was not Mexican at all. We were hungry too and what we had to eat was a lil too expensive when the popusas were 2.40 each and he had two. And I had enchiladas. We were sorely disappointed in the red enchilada. We had told been told by friends that it was really good authentic Spanish/Salvador and/Guatemalan food but honestly it was pretty poor quality ... place is a little dirty , plates & Silverware were not really washed very well.The staff ,the waitresses, were very nice and very accommodating but the food just wasn't that good in a town where Mexican / Spanish food is fabulous read more

I'd been meaning to visit this restaurant for the longest time, and I just wish we tried it a long time ago.. It's simply the best casual restaurant in town. I ordered a tri-enchilada platter (~$8), and it came with a red enchilada with beef, a yellow enchilada with chicken, a blue enchilada with cheese, as well as some posole, Spanish rice, beans, sour cream, and delicious sopapilla.
