I am so glad I listened to wise folks on the internets and came by this little mom and pop shop. Food? Stellar. Almost everything we got was perfection. Friend and I both go the Adovada combo. I loved the adovada chalupa so much I got an adovada burrito to go for breakfast tomorrow! The cheese enchilada w/Christmas sauces was so delicious, as was the rice and posole. The only thing I didn't love was the shredded beef taco. Beef was dry, tough, a little flavorless. Maybe because it was the bed of the night? My friend got the regular ground beef taco and said she liked it. On top of all this, the food came out fast, piping hot, and the older man who works there is so sweet, never saw him stop working and he made sure to check on us a few times. The woman working tonight was good too, very professional and good service, just not sweet and warm/fuzzy like the older gentleman was. Additionally, prices were fair for the amount and quality of food, ZERO wait, easy parking, not at all touristy, just very small-town, old school diner type vibe. Visiting from CO, stumbled upon this gem with a few friends from the Midwest. No fancy signs, just a diamond hidden amongst other businesses in a strip mall style building. The Veggie enchilada and burrito were extremely tasty. The house made green and red chili was a fantastic exclamation point to compliment all the fixings in these bad boys! Visiting Santa Fe, picked El Comal for its high ratings and wanting Mexican food. Appears to be a favorite with the locals. Ordered the Triple Enchilada: beef, cheese and chicken with beans and rice, corn tortillas. The enchiladas were covered with a red flaming hot sauce, a distracting heat covering the good food underneath. Scrapped chili sauce off to the side and it was all good. Second order was a Taco salad with beef. Fresh lettuce, good beef and all the fixings. Chips and salsa appeared to in house made, deep fried. Canned sodas for beverages. Great local place for food all day. We came for breakfast. The place is in a dumpy looking strip center but the food and service are awesome!! I had papas rancheras which was eggs over tasty potatoes with salad and refried beans. And it came with sopapilla!! yumm. The wife was hungry and had steak and eggs. Very tender ribeye. Huge portions. Took potatoes home and ordered a few flour tortillas to make breakfast tacos tomorrow. read more

This place, out of the core Santa Fe area, is well worth the visit! We came for breakfast at 9 on a December Sunday morning and there was plenty of room. We had huevos rancheros and the Santa Fe omelette and thoroughly enjoyed then both. Both red and green chili sauces were tasty. Bonus - I had a fresh, warm and fluffy sopapilla with honey to finish... This fits the Yelp model we search for - small, unassuming place with great service and food. We just got in town and we were hungry and looking for authentic local cuisine. The staff at hotel recommended El Comal as it was walking distance and we didn't want to get back in the car and drive. The strip mall is nothing to look at but the food was delicious, the service was great and we would definitely go back there again!! I had the Chili Relleno dinner and it was one of the best I've ever had! Hubby has the Combo Plate which he said was awesome and we both had a margarita! Such a horrible experience here. The food was mediocre, and that alone I was going to give 2-3 stars. BUT we had a party of 6 with separate bills, in which each bill was higher than the amount of food we ordered. When questioned, the server told us gratuity was already included for the "clean up". BUT the majority of our group already had paid and added extra gratuity since it was not marked on our bills. It wasn't until after the fact that we did the math and were very upset. I love supporting small businesses and try very hard to be understanding. But the food was VERY mid but the situation afterwards was just ridiculous. read more

I really only came here because it was within walking distance of my hotel but I was pleasantly surprised. I got the steak, which was delicious. The sopapilla was really good as were the beans. The only thing that was a little disappointing was the red sauce on the enchiladas. Service was friendly and quick. Worth a try if you're in the area. read more

While visiting Santa Fe I ate breakfast here every morning and never ate the same thing twice, except the sopapillas (we'll talk about that later). The food was always amazing and the portions generous. Their red chili was on point. Sopapillas were fluffy and crispy and edible either savory or sweet. The waitress was on top of her game always poured us water when our glasses were low. That's what I call service! Downtown restaurants too crowded? Take a drive out Cerrillos to El Comal. We had a delicious lunch in a relaxed atmosphere. The food was comparable to any around for authentic New Mexican food. Don't let the sign saying Spanish and American food fool you, it is NM. The plates are huge. We stopped here instead of waiting at least an hour for some of the more popular restaurants in town and I'm glad we did! The food came out quickly and everything was cooked well. Their specialty chile sauces definitely have a kick to them but they also have some good flavor. Margaritas was similar to what you get in Mexico, very good. It's not sour or too sweet, just the right balance. The price for food and drink was very reasonable compared to what you might pay in downtown area. It came with sopapilla. It was god but we were so full that we took some home. Next morning we had it for breakfast but it got so tough even after microwave. We suspect it might.... At least we enjoyed it yesterday. We are very happy to find this hole in a wall restaurant. While in Santa Fe, New Mexico, my wife and I had dinner at El Comal. It is located in an unassuming and easy to miss space along a strip of businesses. We were quickly seated with chips and salsa. I enjoy some heat in my salsa, but nothing prepared me for this. It burned the end of my tongue pretty good, but I continued to partake of this fiery sauce on corn chips! We ordered combo platters. The star of mine was an adovada chalupa, marinated pork in a corn tortilla cup covered with avacado. Very tasty. My plate also came with a cheese enchilada (greasy), a beef taco, rice, beans, posole and a sopailla (delicious with honey). We asked for the red sauce on the side. In Santa Fe, hungry, want to avoid peak traffic & love Mexican food. Sounds like a perfect reason to stop here. Buried in a non-descript strip mall we found the door and entered. Another bonus it's a hole in the wall. Grabbed a table and our server shows up with menus & chips and salsa. Lots to choose from on the menu. I zero in on the chimichanga, with the carne adovada plate. Our food came out in no time. The Chimi was huge - simple ingredients: meat & tortilla. Red on the side - nicely hot, but lacking that smoky flavor. In additions to the usual staples on the plate there was an excellent pico de gallo. Arguably the best I've had since leaving TX and better than some I've had there. The carne adovada plate had a generous amount of meat immersed in the red sauce. The pork was tender and shredded easily. Not a fan of the flour tortilla that came with it. It was the thick cakey type. The sopapilla that came with mine was huge - light & soft with flaky exterior. So while visiting NM we were looking for some authentic Mexican food and on our search this restaurant popped up on our search bar that was only a couple of minutes away from our stop at the local Walmart. And they did not disappoint. Small hole in the wall ,nothing fancy but the old school diner type feel. Pretty wide selection of options to choose from. Service was good and we felt welcome. Kinda seemed like alot if regulars were coming in and out and some gentleman seemed to be chatting it up amongst each other enjoying thier breakfast and coffee with no one rushing them out. Tortillas? Geez straight out of the kitchen and yes when I asked for more I had to wait a couple of minutes because they were in the process of making more, worth the wait!
