We always enjoy El Centenario in Wolfeboro. We go over by boat and walk to the restaurant. The owners are from Puebla, MX and their food is authentic Mexican. Mom Beatrice, daughter Racquel, and son Izzy (chef) are wonderful. The margaritas are terrific, especially the jalapeño version. The mole is amazing. We have tried many of their entrees and they are all delicious. Highly recommend. read more

I thought I was going to enjoy this when I first walked in but this place is definitely an overpriced, touristy restaurant. We asked for one margarita de fraises (strawberry margarita) and we ended up getting two..but we didn't want to be difficult so we didn't say anything but woo, did that put a dent in our wallets. But they were BOMB though, so it was worth the mistake. you NEED to have their margaritas. it was frozen too, oh my goodness. probably my favorite part of the meal. As an appetizer, we got nachos and they were $7 but the portion was definitely worth the money! We expected them to be small but nah, and almost all the chips were covered, yum! Honestly, we were getting full off of them. We order the Tacos Al Pastor and Baja California Tacos with fish (you can choose between fish or shrimp) and they were okay. Great portions though! Usually you get three tacos but they give four here, love it. The pastor was a bit dry and the flavors did not mix well. The fish tacos weren't too bad but there was more batter than fish. and the fish did not fit in the tacos, lol. It was a bit pricey and I'd consider going back but I can't say it's a must-have place. This is a little place right outside Wolfeboro and a walk from town docks. The food is good, the people are nice, but the actual service is not fast. I've been here 3 times this summer and both times it took us over 2.5 hours to have dinner. There was a long wait of over 40 minutes for a party of 4. During our wait they sat a party of 8 that walked in, and a couple of parties of two. But I don't mind that. They have their system and I was willing to wait. When we sat down it was a while before our server came, then when we ordered apps and drinks, the apps came but no drinks. We did eventually get our drinks, and it was good. Here is the deal with the food. They might be short staffed (the excessive wait) and they have a beautiful outdoor seating section where they are using their entire parking lot set with potted flowers dividers. It looks beautiful and they do a good job dealing with the mask issue. It is very good. For the last two times I got the paella and it has been delicious, large and well stocked with seafood. My vegetarian daughter gets the veggie fajitas and they are amazing as well. My wife loves the Baja tacos and the cauliflower tacos. My youngest gets the chicken quesadilla that is thick with chicken and melted cheese. They have made to order guacamole and chips that are very very good. We also usually get the churros and they would be amazing if we got a fresh batch. I started at 3 stars for this but as I wrote it I decided to give it 4 considering the location and other options. I was annoyed by the wait as it happened twice, but these are different times, perhaps I have to change my perspective a little. read more

I came here the day after Thanksgiving and thoroughly enjoyed it. There was only one employee working in the front as a waitress/hostess/bartender, and she was great! Super friendly, attentive, accommodating, and knowledgable. I'd probably give the food a 3.5/5, but I live in Los Angeles so am pretty spoiled with good Mexican food there. I had the fajitas - I was able to do a 50/50 plate of shrimp and portobello mushrooms. However, there were only three shrimp and 4 small slices of portobello. It seemed more like a 25/25 order, haha! But, the taste was pretty good and there were a lot of vegetables included (carrots, peppers, onions, zucchini, etc). I'd definitely recommend the guac though - made table-side!! I want to share my experience at El Cents yesterday. First off they are open 7 days a week 11a to 9p. No other restaurant in Wolfeboro is. The staff has remained the same for years with the exception of the summer help. This is authentic Mexican food and like any other restaurant has is ups and down with staffing today. They have never been anything but kind, professional. Remember servers make 3.27 per hourly rate. Kindness and respect goes along way and you would expect the same for what you do. read more

We visited El Centenario at 5:15 on Saturday Evening. We ate there last year and enjoyed our food and drinks. We walked in and were told by a young man that we would not be served. "It's too crowded and the kitchen is overwhelmed." We look and see two vacant 4 top tables. We the ask, "Can we sit down at one of these empty tables and have a drink and wait? The young man replies "No." We spot a waitress and ask the same question. She said, "the owner does not want anyone to be seated because the kitchen is overwhelmed and we don't want to disappoint anyone." I ask can we speak to the owner? The Waitress replies " No He's in the back and busy." We look over at the bar. There are 3 empty seats there. We ask a third employee, the bartender, "Can we sit down and have a drink? We don't have to eat we'll just have a beer and a margarita". The bartender's answer is "No". I say, "so you won't serve me a drink ?" The bartender further states, "the owner does not want anymore people in the restaurant." I ask to speak with the owner. The bartender says, "He's not on the premises". So one of the employees is lying. I feel I'm in an episode of the Twilight Zone. There's empty tables and empty spots at the bar but we don't want your business. We won't return. Last time we were at El Centenario, there were Mexican employees. None of the 3 we interacted with were Mexican. Perhaps it is under new ownership. My wife and I tried this authentic Mexican restaurant for lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the dishes. I got the beef tacos and my wife got the pork tacos - both were excellent. Our server was attentive, and the food came out quickly. We ate outside which was great as it was a beautiful day, but the inside looked nice as well. We were able to get a seat outside on a fair weather Friday evening and were pleased to be greeted by such friendly staff. We were delighted to see vegetarian nachos on the menu so we started with those and ordered the Cadillac margarita and jalapeño margarita. Interestingly, the restaurant does not have a drink menu-but fear not! The server will rattle of a a long list of margaritas you can order and the bar will make whatever your heart desires. The jalapeño margarita was very flavorful and the Cadillac was STRONG and oh, so good. With all of the mouth watering options on the menu, we finally went with the California tacos with Buffalo cauliflower for my vegetarian and chicken mole. Oh my yum. Even the rice that came with my dish was so delicious. We asked for hot sauce, for which we did see we got charged $2, but, wow, it is the most different hot sauce I have ever seen or tasted. First, it is cream colored, not red, as I was expecting. Second, taste at your own peril, because this hot sauce is . I absolutely loved it. First off I will say the three stars is because the food was very good and the waitstaff was friendly and efficient. It was not super busy like I read that it can be so we had no issues with wait. The minus two stars is for cleanliness. The table was sticky and had the smell of a rotten towel. The waitstaff probably uses the same towel over and over again without washing it and it starts to mold and that smell comes off on everything they wipe. I know this from working in a restaurant. It becomes a mung rag. Our table smelled gross. The walls next to our table were covered with stains. It looked like a mixture of beans, margaritas, and salsa was dripping / splashed on the walls next to our table. Again, very gross. It was hard not to notice these distractions when your forearm is sticking to the table and the scent of rotten towel is hanging in the air. That was unfortunate. I loved the food but the fact that it was so dirty means I won't be going back. read more

Our complaint to the server was ignored, no replacement or credit offered. Only forks were provided, no knives until we asked. Everything was à la carte including the table salsa. We waited nearly 30 minutes for our entrees, with no check in by the server to acknowledge the long wait. When seated, no silverware/plates at table. They ran out of a staple guacamole and other dinners. Waitress was inundated as well as the staff. Food was ok but not anything great. We were sat for dinner around 7pm. We got frozen drinks which were extremely weak and didn't taste like alcohol at all. Their patio was infested with flying beetles that landed on people's food, hair, etc. - not necessarily the restaurant's fault but it made it pretty miserable to be there. The wait for our food was at least an hour and a half and they finally served everyone at the table except one person. Other members of our party were done eating before they brought the final meal. Best Mexican dinner that we have had in a long time. We had the Chili Rellenos (one of few veg options), Burrito Combo with chicken, and the Nachos to start. found that the Nachos were oddly short of tortilla chips (thought there were none actually), but there literally 6 or so chips under a blanket of cheese lol. Best Mexican around. Everything is fresh made. No pans of pre-made blandness slopped into a tortilla. Because of this it's a little slower than one might expect from a Mexican establishment. I've been here a few dozen times and never disappointed. The flautas/taquitos (I do chicken) are awesome. Poblano chicken is wonderful. Mole is delicious. Pibil is great. Chile nogada is such a unique dish, you have to be OK with a bit of sweetness in your entree, but it's a whole different experience. Small restaurant off the Main Street--parking is very limited in front. I was told to be nice when writing my review, as my dining companion likes this place. Again, very small, but intimate. The restaurant was pretty full when we arrived, so we were seated right by the front and bathrooms--two strikes!!! Anytime someone either came in or out the front door, the cold air followed. Same with the bathroom, so I don't know know how many times I got bumped in my chair when someone used the rest room. I think there was only one server waiting on tables and also working the bar. Took a very long time to get drinks, never mind food. The drinks, I had a house margarita, and it was very good. I actually had two!!! The food, also very good, and the portions decent. I ordered the chicken enchiladas, and each with a different sauce - roja, salsa verde, and finally the Molé. All were very good. Th Molé was rich and had some good heat. I would definitely order again. We then received the desert menu, and they had many choices. I wanted the Tres Leche, only to find out, they only offer on the weekends so I went with the flan. It was just OK. I know I wouldn't order the flan again. Maybe I'll try them in a less busy night, get an earlier start- get a better table away from the front door and bathrooms. read more

Absolutely fabulous experience at El Centenario on a Wednesday afternoon. It is right up the street from downtown, definitely walkable, and well worth the walk! We were greeted by the friendly server/host and he sat us immediately and gave us menus, warm crispy tortilla chips and a perfectly spicy salsa. The decor is wonderful and very authentic. Lots of bright colors and decorations, it was fun to look around! We ordered steak fajitas and it was brought out in less than 10 minutes. The sizzling hot fajitas came with warm soft tortillas, rice, beans, guac and pico de gallo. The flavor of the steak was FANTASTIC, perfectly salty and full of citrus from the lime. Very tender and flavorful. The rice and beans were also delicious. The guac and pico de gallo were incredibly fresh and wonderful. It all paired so well! And it was also a very large serving size. As a table of two we split this, and still had leftovers! The waiter was incredibly friendly and attentive to our needs. I previously hadn't found any REALLY good restaurants in the Wolfeboro area, but this place blows the rest out of the water. I can't recommend enough- we will most definitely be back and have already recommended this restaurant to our local friends! read more

We checked in at 7:45 for a table and left at 10:15 without having one bite of food. We sat down at 8:15, waitress took our order, and it took about 20 minutes for drinks. We ordered an appetizer and two entrees. About 45 minutes go by (9 pm) without an appetizer, so I check in with the waitress and she assures me that it's coming. Then, she comes back to tell me she put the appetizer in to come out at the same time as the entrees. Not ideal, but not a problem; I'm patient and I'll give the waitress a break. Then, it's 9:45 and she comes to my table to say she never put our orders in at all. We had sat there for an hour and a half until she realized something wasn't right. I asked for some sort of discount and she had to call a manager as no manager was on site. We were offered free churros and declined as I really didn't want to stay longer than I needed to at that point. She then put our food orders in, but it was at the back of the list in the kitchen and we had to wait another 20-25 minutes to get our food. Orders identical to ours we're going out left and right, but not to our table, even after noticing we had been there for 1 hr+. People who came far after us had time to order, eat, and then leave while we were still sitting there. At that point, I just had our order made to go and took it home because I just wanted to leave and no other restaurants were open at 10pm. Each time I go, it's unorganized, but this last trip was by far the worst. There is no management or organization at this restaurant. I'm used to having to wait 20+ minutes to put a drink order in, but this was by far the worst experience I've had at a restaurant. Not to mention the food is overpriced ($20 for tacos, $15 margarita). The drinks and food are pretty decent for Mexican food in the northeast, but not worth the hassle. read more
