We came for happy hour and WOW were we impressed. Knowing they get crowded we came for 4:30 which was perfect. We were sat at a table near the bar which was great as it was inside and had a nice breeze with the fans and AC. Damien was our server and was wonderful at explaining the menu and the concept of their scratch kitchen. For our drinks we tried the classic and guava-habanero margaritas. We ended up liking the classic more just because the fresh ingredients were reminiscent of those we had in Mexico. It was a little too warm out to be doubling down on spice in our drinks too. We ordered a brisket quesadilla and for our tacos: carnitas, chorizo, and crispy fish. For our second round (not pictured), my husband tried the spicy chicken. He was warned the spicy chicken is exceptionally spicy but he didn't think that warning was warranted so maybe don't be afraid to try it if you're not big on spice. We had tap water that they left a large bottle on the table for. Even though we didn't drink too much of it, they still replaced it with a fresh bottle after a while since it probably got warm. One staff member even came to wipe up the water that had sweat off our drinks. Overall, El Camino exceeded our expectations. All of the staff was kind and courteous and the food was off the chart. Great time at this El Camino in Delray Beach. Always like the fun Mexican cantina "Day of the Dead" ambiance with the industrial open ceilings and the tubular air condition vents. Rustic farm house decor hanging from the ceiling providing your eyes to happily wander while eating. Met family at the bar and immediately ordered the roasted tortilla chips with their patented red and green dipping salsa. These are so dang tasty and highly addicting. The bartender was a semi-social beast and mixed up a few cocktails with vigor and a qwirky smile. The gender neutal bathroom provided some little details that did not go unnoticed. The strong farm house theme was commendable. The corroded metal sink situated on a reclaimed wood counter was a nice addition. The glossy lime green tiled walls matched the couches throughout the dining room. Finally made it to this location after many visits to their much larger spot in Boca... and I get the appeal immediately. Great vibe here. Love the light and openness... right to the street... which gives the place great energy. It was around 5pm and I just barely grabbed a seat at the bar. I was heading elsewhere for dinner, so only had a couple of their excellent Margaritas during happy hour. Watching them fill the small glass completely with ice, there's really a lot of space for the Marg... but they're really good... and at $6 during happy hour, hard to complain. I enjoyed my Guava habanero margarita it had the right amount of kick to it. My mom got a mosquito which she was not a fan of and later switched to a classic margarita. She got the Ceviche and felt it was too salty, chips and quac and Chicharrón(pork rinds). Was ok. Stopped in at El Camino for a quick bite and a drink. I ordered the red snapper ceviche and my friend ordered the gringo toccos (I forgot to take a picture of it). This is my favorite happy hour spot in Delray Beach! It can be difficult to get a seat since they get so busy during happy hour, but it's worth the wait! Everything I have tried food and beverage wise has been great and something I would not hesitate to order again. I really enjoyed their espresso martini made with tequila instead of vodka. I think it's better this way. I always order the chips and salsa. Their salsa and hot sauce are delicious- the chips have always been hot and fresh as well! With how high the cost of eating out has gotten, it was very refreshing to come to El Camino for happy hour- where all food and drink options are between $2-$6 so you can try multiple items without spending a ton. Everyone that works here is first rate and I have only had great service. I will definitely be back the next time I am in Delray during their happy hour! El Camino used to be a great choice for Mexican food in Delray or Boca Raton. Sadly, those days are behind us. The Good - They still have a great happy hour with $3 (mini) tacos. The Bad - The hostess was rude; period. Once seated the server was attentive and friendly. We ordered chips and salsa, guacamole, brisket nachos, a few cocktails, and a beer while looking over the menu. The drinks were pretty much what you would expect. I'll note the $7 chips were fresh and hot; not $7 fresh and hot, but certainly better than most. They had very little brisket (older patrons in our party joked, "Where's the beef?" Anyway, what once was an amazing appetizer loaded with brisket for about $12 (Delray), is now $19 with only a fond memory of brisket that didn't make it to the plate. For dinner we ordered typical Mexican fare; tacos, quesadillas, and enchiladas. They were all good, but like much of our meal, not great. The Take Away - I've visited El Camino in Delray, and now Boca Raton, too many times to count. What was once an amazing dining experience is now just another Mexican Restaurant. The portions are smaller, the prices are higher, and the hostess seemed bothered to take time away from here conversation to engage with us. Honestly, the experience reminded me of Carlos and Peppi's or Chi Chi's. They were both great until they weren't...and now they're both just distant memories. El Camino - Get your act together and return to what made you famous, or not. The choice is all yours. My choice is trying some of the other offerings that are still hitting it out of the park. The bar is advertised as staying open until 2 AM, but staff started pushing everyone out around 1:30 like they were trying to close early, which completely killed the vibe and felt rushed and unprofessional. On top of that, the service was very careless. We received our food without our drinks, and our server barely checked in on us at all. It felt like we were forgotten about for most of the time we were there. Overall, between the poor service and being rushed out early, it wasn't a great experience. If closing time is actually earlier, it should be communicated honestly, and service should be more attentive throughout the night. read more
