On a work trip to NYC I had to visit Egidio Pastry Shop on Arthur Avenue. The moment you walk in, you're surrounded by the smell of fresh espresso and classic Italian pastries that have been delighting customers for generations. I ordered a cappuccino and, for the first time, decided to try the Rum Baba. I'm glad I did. The pastry was incredibly soft, perfectly soaked with just the right amount of rum, and had a light sweetness that wasn't overpowering. The service was friendly and welcoming, making the experience even better. The staff was happy to answer questions and made me feel like a regular, even though it was my first visit. I'm driving home and I need to pick up dinner for Friday night. First stop Borgatti's. (C'Mon, it's the best) and now I need dessert. I've always walked by Egidio Pastry Shop but now I'm on a mission. I need dessert to carry through out the weekend. Walking inside, it's nostalgic feels from my childhood. Freshly baked Sicilian treats that are proudly on display. I ask: Do you sell Italian bread? I'm told no so I'll gladly take a pound of biscotti. I zero on my favorite, almond biscotti. I ask for a few fruit and nut biscotti as well. Somehow a filler was added, it wasn't even biscotti?? It was a flat, flavorless cookie. I would have enjoyed sesame cookies but I wasn't asked. It was just jammed into the box unbeknownst to me. I don't have these problems in Brooklyn, uncool. There was a cute nonna in front of me ordering Italian pastries. She's directing the counterperson who's preparing her box: I'll have one of those, two of these, while eating a mini cannoli. First time here, I'd like to try the pastries on my next visit. Egidio Pastry Shop is an Italian pastry bakery that opened in the Bronx's "Little Italy" in 1912. It was founded by Italian immigrant Pasquale Egidio. Raised in the Southern Italian city of Salerno (where his parents owned a café), Egidio came to New York City in 1909 at the age of 22. He was accompanied by his wife Carmela and their two young children. After persuading a wealthy uncle to stake him, Egidio secured a small storefront on East 187th Street in the Bronx and his family moved into the apartment upstairs. At first he only served coffee and simple pastries like his parents had in Salerno. When the business took off, Egidio installed an oven so he could produce fancier pastries such as struffoli, quaresimali, and sfogliatelle. The Egidios ultimately had eight children and they all worked in the shop. None of them loved it the way their daughter Antonetta did; she would later go by "Annie". She worked in the shop for over 50 years and would have worked there longer had her brother not sold it to David Palazzo (one of the bakers) in 1982. He in turn sold it to local professor Paolo Palombo and his wife Carmela Lucciola in 1987. The couple later divorced, but Carmela still owns the shop to this day. She remodeled the shop in 2003 and continues to use Mr. Egidio's original recipes. My family and I recently stopped at Egidio's for some dessert. We went to the Bronx Zoo for the day and afterwards we had dinner on Arthur Avenue. We decided to head to Egidio's for dessert when we heard that they were the oldest pastry shop in Little Italy. The shop smelled great, was very clean, and had a huge selection of pastries and coffee. The staff were very friendly and helpful. My wife and I ordered and shared some cannoli (both plain and chocolate-dipped) while our son ordered a mini éclair. We were all happy with our choices. Family-run Italian bakery- Egidio in the Belmont section of Little Italy in The BX, made the cut when my non-Yelp husband tried his luck at getting dessert. Major win. It smells wonderful inside. It's cozy. It's warm. There are rows of Sfoglietelle, Biscottis, Napoleons, cakes, etc- but came with a mission to get 3 cake slices. Noticed a Chocolate Mousse but I always have this fear of disappointment of buying a stale, brown stuff people call Mousse. Not here. Service is nice and price is too. My Mom enjoyed her pumpkin-glazed Cheesecake, hubs enjoyed his Berry/ crumbly-topped/custardy slice and I wished I had a second Chocolate Mousse slice. Their Chocolate Mousse is a Bronx masterpiece: devil's chocolate cake base is moist- like you could really tell it's made the day of and not the day before or worse- 2 days before then sits on the shelf. The Mousse isn't a terrine-type but held its own perfectly as a 'regular sliced' piece and the dark chocolate came through very nice. Little Italy in The BX has a lot of nice Italian bakeries, but never has there been a bakery that's made me want to dive head first into a few Chocolate Mousse slices (or a whole Mousse cake) like the one here. read more

We were referred to Egidios by family whom have been visiting this spot for their Cartoccis (fried dough filled with cannoli cream), supposedly the only pastry shop on Arthur Ave to sell them. Egidios claims to be the oldest pastry shop on Arthur Ave... the service was exceptional, the staff was extremely patient while I overwhelmingly placed my in-store and to-go orders. We sat down for a cappuccino and some cookies while we debated what to bring home; the cappuccino was warm and delicious. The cookies and pastries we brought home were enjoyed by all. They delicately pack the boxes and top them off with red and white twine. My daughter brought home about 1 1/2 pounds of almond biscotti from Egidio. It was rock hard with almonds that were near rancid. Completely inedible. I left a message for the owner and never heard back. Really disappointing, especially for what is a very simple Italian bakery staple. Egidio Pastry Shop was a lovely little stop where I sampled their rainbow cookies. Rainbow cookies were originally an Italian confection but became a staple of New York City. It can be difficult to find them elsewhere. If you don't know rainbow cookies or tricolore cookies they are 3 layers of brightly colored, almond flavored sponge cake, layered with raspberry or apricot jam and an outer coating of chocolate. They are all over the place but only some of them are great. The ones at Egidio Pastry Shop were good but not great. Nice and sweet and slightly firm which is good. I felt the almond flavor was slightly lacking and I didn't get a lot of chocolate flavor either. A lot of the pastries in the shop looked nice. The owner is rude! They have workers that say one price and then they charge you another price... They overcharged me by $6 and the owner lied and wouldn't correct the error. Two employees stated the pastry was 5.95... actually first they said 5.25 then 5.95.. They didn't provide a receipt and when I got home they charged me 6.95 per pastry I called the shop and asked the price of the pastry and she stated 5.95... When I told her I was charged 6.95 she got the owner on the phone and she was very nasty and hung up on me... I called back and told her she is rude and unprofessional. She didn't like it when I answered her back, well honey overcharging a customer is dishonest ... It's the principle of the matter -- 6 dollars is not the end of the world but it's how I was treated... Especially a customer for over 30 years.. It's a shame especially since she's Italian !!! An old style Italian bakery/café in the Belmont "Little Italy" section of the Bronx. Places like this are getting scarce as businesses are squeezed by high rents and rising food costs. It's important to keep mom & pop stores like Egidio going because they are the soul of the neighborhood. I grew up next to Manhattan's Little Italy and it was painful to see all the family owned stores disappear as the older generations retire and their children refuse to take on the burden of hard work that their parents put into the business. Seeing such a quaint establishment, we couldn't help but stop in on an early Saturday morning. A sign in the window offered a croissant and coffee for $2.50, so how can you say no? We pulled up to one of the 7 tables inside and ordered 2 specials. The croissant was light & flaky with a perfectly sweet glaze without being too buttery and the coffee served piping hot in a huge mug. While sipping our java, we checked out the display cases and decided to get a pound of cookies to go. A little pricey at $18-$20 per pound, but it was worth a try. After completing our occasional foodie journey of Arther Ave, we decided to have an espresso. On 187th we found Egidio's. The sign says "since 1912", and if they've survived this long I just knew theses guys must be good. I had a double espresso which was definitely a no nonsense expresso, as an espresso drinker for over 35 years I kind of know what a good espresso is and this spot came through like a bolt of lightening. It was fresh, piping hot and served in an espresso cup and saucer. While I didn't try the pastries, I was seated across from the counter and I could see everything was fresh ... and I even saw the bakers continue to bring fresh cookies out. All in all this is a clean and relaxing spot and if you're into having a good espresso you definitely need to try this place. read more

I wouldn't know what a 3 stars bakery review means. It's a bakery, pastries look amazing. I ordered double shot of espresso and decaf. I absolutely when my coffee is hot( very rare in most American restaurants) and here's the bonus, my creamer was hot too. I'm sold right there. Decor looks like the traditional bakeries back in the day. Of course, you don't come here for the decor. Funny enough, I didn't see any bread but who cares when you can devour a cannoli or my favorite Italian cookies with the chocolate on the top. I'm in heaven. read more
