The cannoli here was alright. There are better elsewhere. The tiramisu was really underwhelming. And while the espresso was decent and the staff friendly super friendly (hence the four stars, for service), I'm not sure this is the best pastry shop in the area. You might not be disappointed, unless you find yourself too stuffed to eat at a better one. read more

Not as good as they used to be. I've been coming here for a long time and it used to be my go-to on Arthur Ave. Went last night with my friend, almost $20 for a pignoli tart, sfiagtelle and rainbow cookie slice. I'm also pretty sure they forgot a pignoli tart and charged me for two because I had asked for two and only got one in the box. The rainbow cookie slice wasn't very flavorful. Overall mediocre. When I get rainbow cookies, I get them for that moist, sweet, cakey-cookie texture and flavor, and this didn't really have that, I mostly tasted the jam they used in between layers. The pignoli tart was dry and I didn't get much of that almondy flavor I usually get from other bakeries. The sfiagtelle wasn't bad, but nothing to write home about. Overall overpriced and quality didn't live up to the price, although unfortunately this is generally not out of the norm for Arthur Ave for a while now. read more

Very disappointing experience -- sharing this to help other customers and hopefully the bakery as well. I was really excited to visit this Italian bakery and bought a big box of cookies because everything looked so beautiful and appealing. Unfortunately, the quality of some of the items was very disappointing. The walnut sugar-covered ball was extremely hard -- like a rock -- and I couldn't bite into it at all. I've never had a cookie like that before. The raspberry cookie had a strange taste and texture that reminded me of plastic. The pine nut cookie also had a very unusual sweetness, almost like an artificial sweetener, that I didn't enjoy. The lobster tail was just okay, but nothing particularly special. After trying several of the cookies, we were hesitant to try other cookies and cannolis and ended up throwing most of the box away. It was disappointing, especially since we were so excited to try the bakery and purchased a large assortment. I'm sharing this review not to be harsh toward the business, but hopefully as helpful feedback. I would encourage the bakery to have better quality control and taste-check the products before putting them on the shelf, especially if something has become too hard or has an unusual taste. For other customers, my suggestion would be: try one or two items first before buying a large box. The pastries may look beautiful in the display, but it's worth making sure you like the taste and quality before purchasing a large assortment. I hope the bakery takes this feedback in the spirit it's intended, because I would love to see the quality improve. read more

For those of you who grew up in the boroughs of New York in the '50s and '60s, you will know exactly what I'm talking about when I mention the local bakery, especially if you are Jewish or Italian! Every ethnicity had their own neighborhood and their own local stores. There was an Irish neighborhood off of Kingsbridge Road, there were the Italians north of Boston Road and there was a Jewish enclave by Pelham Parkway and Allerton avenue. That's where I was! Every Friday at 5:00 p.m. my loving grandfather would pick me and my brothers up in his green plumbing truck and head over to Allerton Avenue and double park while he went into Saperstein's Bakery. We were so excited because we knew he would come out with a treasure trove of goodies. Onion rolls, rye bread, donuts, cinnamon rolls and challah. Off we would go to Grandma's house for a Friday night. Shabbat dinner with all of our favorites framed by all the goodies my grandfather got at the bakery. Every Sunday evening, my grandparent's would park by our apartment and we would all walk up Allerton Avenue to Gino's for an authentic Italian dinner. On the way back we would stop at Lanzetta's Italian bakery for Italian ices or biscotti or a delicious Italian cookie. Those were the days! Well, the Irish are gone, the Italians have mostly gone and the Jews have gone except for a little pocket of Italians in Arthur Avenue which is where I found the bakery with my friend Amy. It's about the only one left in the neighborhood where at a time you could find a bakery on every corner. I was visiting New York last weekend and promised my trainer a black and white cookie and was looking for a little nosh myself, so Amy and I headed over to Morrone's on Arthur Avenue which is just a few minutes from her house. Although it missed the excitement and flavor of the old days when the bakery was filled with old ladies behind the counter, kids and families picking out pastries and cookies and cakes and smatterings of Italian being shared amongst the customers, It still had all of my favorites. I drooled while I looked in Morrone's glass showcase filled with rainbow cookies, cannolis cinnamon rolls, Italian bread, and on and on and on. I got DeMarcus his black and white, I bought myself one of those big Chinese cookies. You know the big round ones with the almond taste with the big chocolate drop in the middle? Amy and I could not quite figure out why they are called Chinese cookies, nor could the lady working behind the counter, but we seem to have a recollection when we were kids that when you got your dessert at a Chinese restaurant, you had a choice of ice cream or one of these Chinese cookies in a smaller form. The sweet lady behind the counter put it all in a box. She tied it up with string like the old days and I was on my way. It's such a weird feeling when you go back to your old neighborhood. The store shells are the same and the outside looks familiar but as soon as you step inside you can feel the difference. I know life marches on but I sure do miss the smell and sounds of the old ethnic bakeries when I was a kid especially when I went in there with my mom or grandparents and knew they would buy me a Charlotte Russe or a cannoli! Before it's too late, head back to your birthplace or old neighborhood if you can. Walk the streets, check out where you lived, go into one of the old stores. It's emotional but affirming. It all goes so fast, my friend. Always stay connected to your past. It's who we are today and drives us for what we want tomorrow I'm glad Morrone still exists and I'll be back with Amy next year when I come up for my Broadway show, White Castle hamburgers and something from Morrone for dessert. Sounds good to me!! read more

FYI don't waste your money. The most disgusting pastry I have ever had. Dried out, tasteless. I wish I could get my $35 back. Horrible. Cannoli horrible I didn't even know what it was filled with. Suppose to be cannoli ??? Rum baba that they added some sweet (I don't know what) to it. It was so wet and soggy I tossed the outer part and the cream was suppose to be canoli. No clue.. pinoli cookie that was so dry I took a bite and threw it out. Don't waste your time or money. Disgusting not to mention 3 of the girls there were so rude to my friend and I we should have walked out. read more

The good: My brother sent 2 boxes of these pastries home with my mom when she flew back to California from New York. I was delighted to get some authentic Italian pastries! When I think of NY, I definitely think of Italian food. I like that the pastries I got were made with natural ingredients and no artificial colors. I tried a cheesecake-like little muffin-bite, an almond mini muffin, a crunchy layered pastry (sfogliatelle) that I once had in France, and one other tan pastry that I don't know the name of. All weren't too sweet, were nice textures, and were something I'd order again. The bad: I wish I was able to try their cakes. The interesting: They sell gift cards and apparel online. They also do wedding cakes and custom designed cakes. The sfogliatelle I had here tasted better than the one I got in Paris because it wasn't as hard/stale. read more

Large selection of cookies and pastries including gluten free almond and pignotti (pine nut) cookies. Got them for a friend who has celiac. Lady at the counter was pretty stern and I feel like she may have overcharged me. Price per pound isn't labeled on the cookies, and she told me the cookies (ea 3in in diameter?) were $45 a pound. When she entered it in and weighed them, I saw it was ~$5 for 4 cookies but she told me the total is $7.25. Ended up paying the $7.25...even if it wasn't an overcharge and I saw the weight wrong, the small cookies were pretty pricey. read more

Such a disappointment. We ordered a black & white cookie and a tiramisu with 2 coffees to sit and eat one afternoon. The cookie was inedibly dry and dark brown on the bottom. A black and white should not be crispy like a damn shortbread. It was way overbaked and just awful. I returned it and the woman took one look at the bottom and shock came across her face. I exchanged it for a cookie and she promptly took the tray of the other black & whites out of the display case after apologizing to me three times. I could tell she was really embarrassed. She was really nice and I appreciate her response. It was the right thing to do. Every business can make a mistake. A few minute later, a guy walked in, presumably the owner, and I happened to be facing them the way I was sitting, when she told him about the black and whites. She showed him the tray, lifting the cookies to show him the bottoms and how awful they were baked. He picked up the tray and put it back in the case and walked away. Nice move to turn additional customers off of Morrone Pastry Shop by serving them shit. My friend told me his tiramisu was not great. We left and thanked the nice woman. I won't be back. read more

I got the peach pesca and small Sfogliatella for $5.25 (there aren't any signs for prices). There's a credit card charge that I wish I knew about but it's small (mine was only 20 cents or so but still I had cash). There's a huge variety here so I'd come back and try other things. The peach pesca was a surprise delight - it's like the Italian cookie version of a peace ring. It's cold and soft soaked in peach flavorings and espresso with a small custard filling. The small Sfogliatella was very fresh and crispy, although the middle was too orange chemical tasting, but I often have this issue with fruit flavorings. read more

Located in the heart of Arthur Avenue this is one of those old school bakeries. You can tell there is a lot of history here which adds to its character. It has everything you can think of so it was tough to choose what to get. I went with the Sfiogatelle which is an all time favorite. This one was good and the filling wasn't too sweet. It did taste a little stale like it was sitting out a little. Still good though and had a flaky exterior. They also have mini sfiogatelle if you want smaller bites. We also have italian napoleons which as old school as you can get. Looked awesome! They also have any cake/cookie/canoli you can think so come by hungry! You will pay a premium for these baked goods since they are homemade. This is a family owned spot and I love supporting businesses like this. It is a perfect gift idea or snack on them yourself. This is what Arthur Ave is all about! Check it out! read more

I should have heeded the other reviews as a warning. VERY disappointing. Forget about the cold atmosphere and rude wait staff, let me tell you about the more important aspect - the baked goods. I paid $5 for 4 cookies (ok fine, inflation whatever although this was the MOST I'd ever paid for Italian cookies). The biggest disappointment was that they were so old and stale! They crumbled into sand and the jelly was one solid hard piece. I mean.... How old are your cookies if they crumble literally in the bag and the jelly is rock hard. VERY DISAPPOINTING AND WONT EVER COME BACK. read more

Morrone was our last stop before leaving Arthur Ave. We picked up an assortment of pastries to eat on New Year's Eve. I thought the best thing was the cannoli. It was the second best cannoli I tasted on Arthur Ave though. My friends absolutely loved the pignoli cookies. We had a 5 year old who gave her stamp of approval to the vanilla cupcake. I did not care for the rainbow cookies or the carrot cake. The rainbow cookies didn't have a lot of flavor. The carrot cake was not enjoyable because it had too much nutmeg & allspice. Love when it has a cinnamon flavor but do not care at all for the allspice. That's it. I'd definitely go back but I'd also like to compare against some of the other nearby pastry shops! Just OK. We ordered some napoleons (solid), cannoli (solid), and rainbow cookies (sadly, mediocre and possibly a little stale). My fiancé and I always wanted to visit Little Italy. Of course we couldn't leave without getting some pastries. We walked into this shop which had all their offerings in the glass display. From various, cookies, cakes and pastries there is a lot to choose from. We already had picked up cannolis from another near by bakery, but I really wanted some rainbow cookies. The rainbow cookies and many of the other desserts were currently selling at $14.99 per pound. I got about a half a pound of the cookies and the girl helping us was nice enough to tie string around the box to keep it secure. The rainbow cookies were amazing. The cakey layers were nice and moist with thin layers of raspberry jelly. The chocolate on the cookie was so fresh. It is probably one of the best rainbow cookies I've had. I'm a total fan of these rainbow cookies and will be back to get some more when I return. read more

Stopped in Morrone's with a friend while exploring Bronx Little Italy. We had just had lunch but the desserts in Morrone looked too good to pass by, so we decided on coffee and a cannoli. My favourite bakery in the neighbourhood for so many reasons. The best reason is how welcoming and caring the staff is. They are so knowledgeable about the products, you don't need to feel like you have to rush. They really take the time to help you if you are overwhelmed, because there are SO MANY OPTIONS. The new owner is the type of person to stay open later so you can pick up your cake on time. How do I know this? Because I was that customer.
