Volunteered outside this restaurant at the marathon, and after a long day, the food here really really hit the spot: a short rib sandwich that was to die for. I also grabbed a chocolate cookie, which was delicious (immediately regretted offering to split it with my husband as I could have eaten the whole thing). I'm running the marathon next year but I'm going to station my husband outside this spot on 1st and tell him to grab food there. If this was my neighborhood, I'd definitely be a regular. read more

I was a diehard regular of Evelyn's Kitchen for years, loved everything top to bottom! A couple of years ago I stopped ordering, as I kept getting undercooked salmon. I don't think that messed with the quality of the food, but I just don't have time to recook food if I'm ordering out. Tonight I decided to just order some cake - their desserts are delicious! One piece of cake is $8 so I'm imagining I'll get nice lush slices, but unfortunately only got about 3/4 of a small slice of one of the cakes. Either someone is a very bad slicer, or a chunk fell off and it became a snack for someone else. Pic included. I still do highly recommend Evelyn's if you can go in to the shop, it's super cute! Let me first say I'm a huge fan of Evelyn's pudgies. When I use to live in Harlem I would order from them all the time just for the banana pudgies. Unfortunately I moved to Brooklyn so I had to travel twice to Harlem and both times they were not open even though google says they are. 1) they always never pick up their phone so I can never confirm if they are operating that day or not. 2) nowhere on their social do they mention they're not open or closing early that day. Evelyn's is awesome food, when they are open, this establishment is near me, and i think they have more than what it takes to become a staple of any community it is in. They just are very hard to catch being open. There doesn't seem to be a specific formula i can figure out when they are open. I have made the trip in person several times to be only left with disappointment and a long hungry belly. I hope they figure out a time schedule that works for them that doesn't sacrifice the quality of their menu, and will be rooting for Evelyn to excel. From time to time I like to pick random spots to try via Grubhub and today it happened to be Evelyn's Kitchen. Idk who Evelyn is or where she's from but I'd like to thank her for the quality food I just ate! I ordered the skirt steak meal with mashed potatoes and hot sauce and honey brussel sprouts. When I ordered via grubhub i forgot to mentioned how I wanted the steak but it didn't matter, it was near perfectly cooked and very very well seasoned. The mashed potatoes were nice and dense like I like em, once again perfectly seasoned. My one and only complaint is the brussel sprouts, I love me some brussel sprouts but Jesus Christo these things were so spicy! I like spicy food but my mouth is on literal fire! Other than that, delivery time was quick and my food was still piping hot when I received it! They will have a repeat customer with me! Has Evelyn lost it? I have not paid a visit to this spot since I lived in the neighborhood over 7 years ago. I loved the Lemon Pepper wings and the banana pudding pudgies are a must-have! Prices on the pudgies haven't changed in all this time! But the Lemon Pepper wings were overcooked, dry and flavorless. Nothing about the lemon pepper wings were lemon pepper. I definitely saw specks of pepper but didn't taste it (do I have covid?!) The coconut rice was okay, but the winner was the spinach... the only thing I ate on my $20 plate. There are simply no words to describe the amazing feast presented to us last night at the Chef's Table at Evelyn's Kitchen. Starting with the drink.. the "Secret" Punch was delicious. I ordered the glazed salmon and coconut rice with string beans, which has been my favorite meal since being introduced to the restaurant. Also had baked chicken with Mac and cheese and spinach . I can't stay thank you enough for helping me accommodate 30 ppl and having such an amazing staff. I couldn't believe I was on 1st and 118th and ordering dessert instead of an East Harlem specialty. My eyes darted over to the savory menu - because lets be honest I dont really eat sweets except these - and after hearing "steak sandwich" my stomach grumbled. Walked out with a bag of stuff to disseminate to all of my friends and a steak salad (thanks for saving me the calories). Originally, I had the crumble at an Edible Manhattan event and through all the savory food this was the one bite I could recall. It wasn't too sweet and it wasn't dry - literally perfection. I feel personally obligated to not only tell all of my friends about it, but to be a cheerleader for EK and rave about their desserts. This is definitely the spot for really good food in East Harlem. Blondies are moist and delightful, as are the carrot cake sliders. So much has changed since my last review... First off they now have regular and comprehensive hours. They offer lunch, dinner, coffee and a pretty cool selection of desserts. Everything looks and tastes amazing. Evelyn's is good at what they do and you can tell they are passionate about doing it correctly. Not really big enough to comfortably dine in but if you insist, there is a table that has 3 chairs and there's also some window seating. So while Ev's might not be as cheap as some ppl would (stereotypically) expect a place in East Harlem to be, please keep in mind that uptown is still part of Manhattan and the overhead to run a business is still pretty high. Also the care and investment made in every detail is so worth the prices. So why only 4 stars instead of 5? Because I was there during an employee review and it was so harsh that I was embarrassed for the guy being reviewed. Phenomenal food! Amazing owners! Evelyn's Kitchen is divine! I'm not really sure what else to say. The food is well-seasoned, fresh, and made to order, so expect a 10-15 minute wait that's completely worth it. I had the lemon pepper wings with broccoli and Spanish rice. The wings were among the most delicious I've had in a long time and I could taste both lemon and pepper in each bite. The Spanish rice has a hint of spice and the broccoli is delicious. Each meal comes with either a brownie or blondie. I had the toffee blondie, which was extremely moist and flavorful. I also had a s'mores pudgie, which was divine and reminded me of my Girl Scout days. Finally, I had a cup of the rosemary lemonade, which was unlike anything I've drank before, but in a good way. Though I had a lot of food, I ate and savored every bite. The owners were there when I ordered my food and are so hospitable and gracious. They even remember the orders of their regulars, which I noticed from their interaction with another customer. I decided to stick with the basics for my first order chose the baked ziti with a side of brussel sprouts. The ziti was great; the sauce delicious and hearty. I cannot say enough good things about the catering Evelyn's Kitchen provided for our huge cast and crew at MTV's Wild N' Out tapings. We had them provide catered meals multiple times over a 2 week period for groups ranging from 30-200 people, including crew, cast and talent. Everyone was impressed. From the moment they arrived on set and walked in with the food (in warmers, toasty and ready to serve) and accessories to set-up, we knew we would be well cared for. They thought of everything, even bringing their own water to fill the trays! Some of our favorites were the chicken wings, sausage and peppers, broccoli and ALL of the desserts. They were also very flexible and made sure to provide options for those that were vegetarian, vegan and gluten free. They were super flexible and willing to work with us in any way to make the whole catering process a joy. Catering for a cast and crew of nearly 200 people is always a challenge. Usually someone has something to complain about. But with Evelyn's all I heard was praise for a wonderful meal, and that is worth every penny. We will definitely be using them on future productions, and I'm already looking forward to next time when we get to have more of the amazing banana cookies they make! read more

As our thanksgiving plans were canceled on Tuesday due to one of my family member getting covid, we lucked out and ordered dinner from Evelyns. We just had our delicious thanksgiving dinner for 4 from Evelyns. It was the perfect amount of food for us and great sides; sweet potato, Mac and cheese, string beans and cornbread stuffing. Turkey was delicious and when we heated everything up it was so easy and not dry. We can't forget the banana cream pudgie and I also ordered the cinnamon muffins. I was so thrilled just moments ago when I realized it's Tuesday that means I can order from Evelyn's Kitchen. I was devastated on Sunday to find I had to wait two days. I've only placed one order with EK it consisted of the roasted chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, green beans, the spinach, the steak salad and German chocolate cake. I will be getting all of those items again today and I'm praying that I also can taste the brownies. This is simply the best take out, item for item, that I've had ever. I had the salmon and it was cooked to perfection (side note...I did order the seared salmon and it was sent blackened). That really doesn't bother me because I love salmon in any form that it's cooked in! The mash is also very stellar...I must agree with all the other reviews as far as that goes. I really wanted to like this food because the descriptions and photos seemed so appetizing. The wings are actually wingettes and much smaller than the photos. The lemon pepper seasoning was too acidic and tasted artificial. The skin was soggy and the chicken was barely done. I like my wings a little more well done with a crispy skin. The Spanish yellow rice looked and tasted like Goya boxed rice. Although Goya is more flavorful. And the honey and hot sauce Brussels sprouts were meh. Overall not a good experience.
