We live in the neighborhood and my boyfriend has been eyeing this place for weeks. We finally caught it during business hours, lucky us. We only tried two items, the Mushroom and Cheese bun and the Ham Cheese and Veggie bun , but they knocked our socks off. Both were so fresh and flavorful. We will definitley be going back for more. The last time I went to the store I had the same issue, the manager wanted to refund my money and assured me it was an isolated incident. The corn muffins STILL smell like FUNKY and have a layer around the edge that is gray. I understand baking, charring and over cooking, this is not that. It seems like it may be buildup from the muffin pan (which isn't being cleaned efficiently.) On a high note, the red bean buns are great. This bakery was so much better when it was Savoy. read more

I have gone here a few times as Cafe Savoy and twice as the renamed Cafe Aloaf. The quality of the pastries have not changed to me. I don't understand the negative reviews when this place is still very good. It may have been the change of management where they had some glitches during the transition, but when speaking to the cashier girls, they told me it's the same baker. The bakery was sold to the baker, but since it was sold, they had to rename the bakery, thus it's called Cafe Aloaf. I do agree the lameness of previous logo imitating the Aloft hotel in Harlem, but the establishment seemed to have listened and they changed it to a feminine cursive font, giving the feel of a french bakery. I have tried the chocolate/almond croissants, beef curry pastry to cheese pastry and all have been fresh and delightful. They have Chinese pastries such as hotdog buns and red bean buns. I finally got to try their strawberry shortcake and it was delicious and easy on the pocket book. They are reasonably priced, from $2.00 to about $3.00. I will continue to come here because it's been consistently good and you just can't beat the prices for the quality of the pastries. The girls that work here are very nice and know their pastries. I been living in the neighborhood for almost 10 years and OH BOY!!!! How have I never stepped foot into this cute little cafe until today? I was actually looking for fresh baguettes (they do not sell them), however I still purchased two buns. I just had the coconut bun when I got home, OOOOMMMGGG; it was so soft buttery, light and delicious. I wasn't expecting for it to have a coconut custardish like filling inside, I thought the bun itself was made with a hint of coconut extract or something, I was surprised. I used to come here when it was named 'Savoy' cafe and it was stellar while not outstanding. These days, it's called 'Aloaf' and the quality has gone from mediocre to well below average. You can tell immediately from the signage, whose logo is a clear rip off from the aloft hotel chain. But it's not only the logo and design, it's the inconsistency and use of it. The awning and in-store signs look different from their business and gift cards. And they call themselves different things from cafe aloaf, to aloaf bakery to aloaf cafe.It was a bad sign for what I was going to find inside... The cashier service was indifferent when I asked for a few recommendations. Just a point and a nudge to the glass shelf display. So I just went with a few items on the display: the croissants, fruit tarts and some coffee. Taste wise, they were all just meh. The coffee had a feeling cup that felt like it was going to fall apart. Everything just felt like a cheap knockoff of a better product. I live nearby and pass by each day on my commute, but I don't think I'll be returning. read more

Having been a long-time customer remembering previous ownership; I have to say that this place has gone downhill. Both Amateur Management and New Ownership have their priorities askew. They raised prices and took away the only limited customers incentive. If I were to reference this coffee house joke of a place to Seinfeld their "part time manager" Yivi would be the "Stamp Nazi". Mostly There only on weekends - GIVING OUT 3 FREE CHERRY DANISHES TO JEROME a "member of the community" BUT WONT ALLOW "EXTRA" STAMPS TO CUSTOMERS PAYING FULL PRICES FOR MULTIPLE COFFEES. Hmmmmm I smell shenanigans! Under previous ownership the original and only customer incentive was to buy 8 coffees and get one free. And that was not saying much. The amount of coffees you purchase each visit count as only 1 stamp. Buy 3 coffees GET 1 STAMP?! MAKES NO SENSE - Customers should not have to work that hard. Especially when UPTOWN ROASTERS is less than 450ft away, costs less money and HAS BETTER CUSTOMER INCENTIVES! I can buy 3 coffees at KHAVE in Hell's Kitchen pay the same price and get three stamps for the three coffees I purchased. Because these places are smart enough to know there's something about customer incentives that build customer loyalty relationships and eagerness to spend money. It may be understandable prices were raised in the transfer of ownership. Primarily because they had remained in place since the Bakery opened. However to raise prices AND revamp the only customer incentive by eliminating it is adding insult injury. Clearly this is the amateur thinking of "The Stamp Nazi" Who is most likely the reason for the decline in revenue and why they have expanded to accept EBT. Normally these are concerns I would express to ownership however they weren't allowed to speak for themselves as we attempted to have a conversation and the "Stamp Nazi" felt it was more important to interject into a conversation where she was not invited then to help her colleague with the line of customers that was created by her neglect and lack of managerial skills. read more

I want to praise this bakery for their puff pastries - goat cheese/spinach and mushroom. They are fresh and flaky, and are absolutely delicious when warm with aloaf's fine coffee. I have brought them to parties and they are always a big hit. In some cultures, they would be called bourekas or burek. This cafe is cute inside and well maintained, and gets a lot of foot traffic as it is near the subway. Their rolls are fresh and very good as well. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that these are the best chinese bakery buns I've ever tried in the city. Bit of backstory: I'm cantonese-american & was born & raised in queens so I've been eating chinese bakery buns for as long as I can remember. I moved out of the city for 12+ years, moved back, and started working in east harlem 4 years ago. i was pleasantly surprised to find a chinese style bakery on my way to work from the subway, and have come here at least once weekly ever since. these buns are the fluffiest and always fresh. they don't have that soggy, squished white bread effect that happens with others I've tried. service is always pleasant. It gets busy in the morning around 8 am but is totally clear around lunch time. at first glance, the prices seem high for chinese buns - they're $2 - as compared to bakeries in chinatown, but the price is commensurate with both the quality and size of the buns. My favorites are the pineapple buns (they are labeled as sweet danishes), ham and cheese, red bean swirl, cream bun (only wish they would sprinkle on the traditional coconut), and scallion twist. I also enjoy the curry and hot dog buns. They also used to make an egg and ham bun for breakfast, pre covid. I've never tried their american style baked goods or the cakes. anyway, grateful for this place for providing a bit of childhood nostalgia and my weekly treat for years now. read more

What happened to this place? I liked this little cafe when it was called "Savoy, " but since apparently changing ownership, it's gone downhill. Came in today for the first time in months and was greeted by two surly-faced cashiers, one of whom was shoving a sandwich in her face behind the counter. I asked if they had breakfast sandwiches and the girl shrugged dismissively like "naw". I asked if they thought they ever would and she rolled her eyes at me like I was imposing on her. Okay... I saw after that they actually did have ham and cheese croissants, but I had already paid so didn't bother ordering one. -_- I settled on a large cappuccino, which was served in the flimsiest coffee cup. Not great for drinking on a commute. Very poor service, I won't go out of my way to come back. read more

I walked by this café a few times before stopping in, because I couldn't tell from the outside that it sold classic Chinatown pastries like egg tarts (tender inside with buttery, crisp crust) and fluffy baked pork buns. The bubble tea is good, but I mostly go to indulge in savory baked goods like the aforementioned pork buns and hot dog buns. (Only $2.75 each!) Very poor customer service and the cashiers have major attitude. Patrons are required to wear masks, yet the servers don't. I witnessed a cashier/server with her mask on her chin while talking over someone's cake. Another employee was just eating. She also said that she can't give me a bigger cake but I never ask to give me the bigger cake!
