WOW! This place knows how to do food. My wife and I had lunch here today and if we were staying in the area for another day or two I'd drive back to Summerville just to have lunch here again. I opted for their version of a Cuban Panini with a side of Potato Salad. One bite of my sandwich and I knew I made the right choice in picking this restaurant. It was salty, acidic, sweet, tender, juicy, crisp and made my taste buds sing. The potato salad was perfect. The potatoes were tender but not overcooked with just the right amount of mayo and seasonings. My wife had Chicken Salad on a crossiant with a side salad and a cup of Tomato Basil Soup. She raved about it all, right down to the croutons on her salad. If you find yourself in Summerville and don't stop here for a bite to eat you'll be missing out on something very special. read more

Why haven't I been here before? That's what all of you should be asking yourself if you haven't been here yet. This place is amazing!! Fresh. Made In House. Pick Two Combo. All words that are music to my ears. Their pick two combo was calling out my name. I love to mix and match and try as much as I can and for only $9.99, I just had one of the best sandwich and salad combo lunches that I've ever had. Their combos include the whole sandwich then either a cup of soup or 1/2 salad. I went Grilled Brisket & Cheese with 1/2 Fall Harvest Salad. The sandwich is made in-house braised brisket, roasted red peppers, red onion, horseradish sauce, monterey jack, and cheddar. And the salad is mixed greens, red onion, grapes, honeycrisp apples, roasted red peppers, bleu cheese & candied pecans. MINUS red onions on both please and I'm all set. The house made balsamic vinaigrette with the fresh salad was delicious and the brisket was amazing. I opened the sandwich up and couldn't see much cheese or any of the horseradish sauce, but I didn't mind not tasting it. The braised brisket has that much flavor on it's own, I didn't miss it! Wanted to like this place. But they made it hard. Started with cashier handing us cups after grabbing the rims. Then the music was extremely loud and tuned to a local radio station instead of a no commercial source. We had to try 3 tables until we found one that was sturdy. The food came arrived about 15 minutes after we ordered it. We only ordered a salad and a quiche. And the flys. There were more than you would find in an outside restaurant. This review is based on two visits to the Eclectic Chef: Let me begin by saying I like everything about this cute little eatery, the concept, menu and location. EC is nestled between a few other quaint shops and restaurants, away from any cars whizzing by, or sidewalk traffic, which makes the outdoor seating experience quite enjoyable. The powerhouse daily record Post and Courier's rated the EC ''Lunch Counter of the Year 2005''. As a rule of thumb--I don't put much stock in that paper's opinions, and somehow they manage to keep serving up the reasons keep giving me more. No wonder paper media is dying. Living in NYC I have many food memories of great lunch foods being served at counters. EC shares in the category of wonderful lunch offerings, each menu items seems well thought out, balanced flavors and textures with a little occasional risk thrown into a panini (IE: sun-dried tomato mayo) or in a sandwich (warm goat cheese and pesto mayo) are a few simple examples. Thus far I have had the Pork Cuban and the Chicken Parm panini's both were a little light on the meats, and just didn't have that flavor intensity I felt they would upon reading the menu. I would not say the items were bland, but they seemed to be missing an X factor, something to turn a B- sandwich/panini into an A+ sandwich. I had the tomato soup (possibly with basil), I do not see it on the internet menu anymore, which was a bit clumpy and not hot. I realize the climate here in S.C. is more hot than cool-but that should not change the fact that soup is served hot barring gazpacho and a few others I imagine I am unaware of. The Tomato soup's flavor was just OK as well, so all three menu items are getting the same grade. Inside EC it is a wonderfully decorated, unpretentious atmosphere-the flavored H2o is a nice touch. The website is clean, well laid out and smart with interesting services, such as the Personal Chef and a nice bio on the EC himself, clearly a intelligent, hardworking man with vision. I will keep going to EC, as I feel I may have just not chosen well off the menu, I have little concern my re review (update) will express the true greatness that is the Eclectic Chef. read more

I have ordered from here multiple times throughout the Covid Era. And every time it's been spot on. What a magical little find! I took my Mother-In-Law here for lunch yesterday, and we were so pleased that we ate at The Eclectic Chef. They have a very good selection of soups, salads, sandwiches, and wraps. The menu caters to omnivores and vegetarians alike, so finding something delicious is not going to be a problem for anyone who eats here. The dining area is small, but there is a lot of seating outdoors in the courtyard, and fortunately for Summerville, the weather is lovely enough that sitting outside most of the year is comfortable. We arrived about 11:30 and grabbed a pair of menus, seated ourselves and looked over our choices. My mother-in-law decided on the house salad with chicken, and I the portabello, chicken, and goat cheese wrap with a side salad. You have to go to the counter to order and pay, but then they do bring the food out to you, so its not terribly inconvenient. How was the food? It was, without a doubt, one of the best lunches I have eaten in a very long time. My mother-in-law's salad was a perfect portion with tons of chopped chicken on the top. I was stunned when I bit into my wrap! The flavors and textures were to perfectly balanced. There was not too much mushroom, or too much goat cheese, the chicken was marinated PERFECTLY, and the arugula back note was like someone singing 4 part harmony to my taste buds! I cannot wait for my next trip to The Eclectic Chef to try something new! As a veteran Charleston chef myself, I can say that this little gem in Summerville, makes me happy to know that great food is alive and well, not just on the peninsula, but around the entire Low Country!!! read more

I ordered myself a chicken gyro and the Greek salad. I was very impressed with the size of the meal, based on the fact that I took advantage of their pick two and assumed I would get a half of each. If this was the case, I could not tell. As for the flavor, let's just say I was delightfully surprised. The food quality was great and the flavors were that of a gyro from a Mediterranean restaurant. Great lunch spot! The food is always fresh and tasty. The restaurant is fairly small but there is plenty of outdoor seating. I usually go with the pick two combo because it's a great deal and it is always hard for me to pick just one thing to order from their menu. Today I chose the Turkey Brie Sandwich and the half Summer Blues Salad. The combo comes with a full sandwich and their "half salad" is quite large. I couldn't even finish it. Since the weather has warmed up, I have started frequenting this little eatery. They have a few tables inside, but to sit outside at one of their covered wrought iron tables is heavenly. Not a fancy place, but don't be fooled the food is fresh and fantastic! Most recently I have tried the special which is a blackened salmon wrap, stuffed with perfectly seasoned but not over salted salmon and fresh mixed greens. Although I never really like pasta salad, I make an exception to their unique recipe of penne pasta salad. The Eclectic Chef is a nice little spot on Short Central street in the heart of historic downtown Summerville. They closed off the street, placing some tables out in the middle and are trying to do more with the area to recapture the vibrancy and "community feel" that Summerville used to have back in the good 'ol days my wife's octogenarian patients wax poetically about. - The desserts are outstanding. We're talking village bakery-level (Old Village). Sure, there is better in the entire metro area but this gets you to the 95% level in terms of pure and unadulterated awesome. Roaming about town for that extra 5% of awesome can sometimes be more trouble than it's worth and other times outright painful. - ladies or even men that don't mind me calling them a sissy will love the salads. Heck, I think the salads are great - cool combinations of ingredients. - Sandwiches... almost earned them a 3 star but I've only had one kind. I do not recommend the cuban pork panini - looked great but the marinade tasted like bottled vinaigrette salad dressing and the meat had no flavor whatsoever on it's own. Potato salad was pretty good. The rest of the sandwiches on the menu look great though and they take risks with their specials. The chicken boursin sandwich had watermelon on it and got good reviews from my friends. - owner is super-nice. He used to trade us desserts for foods back when I worked at a competing restaurant. That restaurant went out of business and so did the next one or two after it, but the Eclectic chef is still going strong. Good for them - that is the trick of restaurants. Find a niche and completely own it. - If you like coffee, they have "Seattle's Best". Coffee turns me into a spaz so I don't know if that brand is good or bad - gourmet meals to go. I love to cook so it will probably be awhile before I try this but rock on - many people don't like to cook so that's a good service. - they handle catering and even will be your personal chef. When I look at all that entails, all I can think is "Wow! How much does that cost?" - free wi-fi. Looks like I found a new place to get some work done. - seem to recall the hours being a bit quirky so call ahead to make sure they're open. I always seem to pass by on a Saturday 10 minutes after they closed but forgot to lock the door. If you go for lunch get there early or late because it looks like Summerville has finally caught on. That is good because nobody can keep a business live over on Short Central unless they're pouring booze. That is a shame (not the booze part), because it is such a cool spot with a few fun activities and big shady trees in close proximity. read more

My sister just moved to Summerville, and the 2 experiences I've had with lunch venues (here and The Mustard Seed) have told me that just being 30 minutes close to Charleston = excellent food. This was another terrific lunch choice. Frito pie! They had frito pie! Chili and corn chips and cheese and sour cream--a mix of tasty goodness. My dad got that, and it was wonderful! I'm sorry I missed it. I misread the menu and thought I could get a half sandwich and a half salad, so I got the french dip and the black and blue salad. But instead it was a WHOLE sandwich + the salad, which was a lot of food. The French dip was quite tasty, as was the salad. My mom and sis both got the chicken salad in a wrap, but i was hoping someone would get the potato salad--i love potato salad. They both got the pasta salad, but it was a little odd (i rarely have good pasta salad, and this didn't really change that fact)--brown (I think they used balsamic vinegar?) and kind of heavy. Again, I'm not a big pasta salad fan, so I'm not the best judge. But they loved the chicken salad. I loved their sweet tea, and they had sweet cold chai, too. Very tasty.
