The best place to pig out is no more. They're destroying their own brand. Now it's cookie cutter decor, void of that burger joint, college feel. Sure, the place could have used a facelift--but now it looks like the Chipotle next door. Not good. Of course, I could probably get used to it. But then I find out I can't get my medium-rare burger cooked under medium. Why would I want to spend 10 bucks for a burger I think is overcooked? And forget about the big serving of fries, now you get a handful. Some sandwiches have also been taken off the menu. Fear not though, they added some "healthier" options to the menu. Seriously? Good luck with the increased foot traffic, but wave good bye to some loyal locals. Six people told me they hated the new place and they weren't going back. I thought they were being melodramatic. The Travel Channel touted this as the World's 2nd Best Place to Pig Out; but it missed out on how sticky and dirty it is in reality. I settled for the "bacon N ranch cheeseburger" which came with fries and a pickle spear. The patty was moist and juicy despite being "well-done", and much better than Bartley's with a terrific char-grilled taste. I was very pleased with the quality and taste of my burger. However, I took 1 star off for the boringly average fries and "attitude" from the staff. Surprisingly, the burger does not come with tomatoes or lettuce unless you specifically request for it at the time of ordering; if you didn't and ask about it later, they would dish out more attitude. They also forgot to include my "pickle spear" (which is really a cucumber wedge since it's not pickled) and plunked it down when I asked. It's advisable that you grab a knife and fork with your burger unless you're fond of the juices and dressing dribbling down your fingers; trust me. Recommended, but you'll have to stomach a good dose of attitude along with your delicious burger. Edit: July 5. 2007 The first and last time I visited Eagles, there was still plenty of snow on the ground, everything has since melted away in the warm July sunshine. I gave Eagle's another chance today and was pleased with the marked improvements they have made in terms of cleanliness and customer satisfaction. The previously sticky tables are now scrubbed clean and I felt safe to place my personal belongings on top of it. A dedicated staff member swept the floors at periodic intervals to minimize debris and litter. The burger griller was especially friendly and courteous. He remembered my pickle spear (properly brined) and was very accommodating with regards to special requests made (ex: extra dressing on the side, etc). The taste of my bacon n ranch cheeseburger remained excellent with its moist and juicy interior, and even the fries were crispier than last time. The portions are dauntingly gigantic so grab a knife and fork! I left feeling that they have definitely earned the extra 1 star from the previous 4 and will definitely return to try the other items on their menu. I've heard of eagles deli from MvF show. To be honest I'm not crazy about 10 pound beef challenges or anything like that. I happened to be in the neighborhood today to get my car inspection sticker and decided to swing by. A friendly girl at the counter recommended Texas burger. Typically I don't even like BBQ sauce as a lot of them are just sweet. I ordered my burger medium, and this was by far the best I've had! The beef, all 1/2 pound of it was grilled perfectly, tender and juicy and it just melts in your mouth. The BBQ sauce was smoky awesome, not over powering the beef flavor. For less 10 bucks, it's a great price too. Honestly to the owners of eagle's deli, if you're reading this, please open a 2nd location in the back bay. I've tried burgers from bbc, bb social club, b good, tasty, and many other places, I think you guys will have a lot of loyal followers here (me included of course) even if you bump up the price a bit too. read more

Yep, even as a former BU student, I give all the credit to Eagle's. It's worth the trip all the way down the Green Line, and that's difficult to say. Haven't had a bad burger yet. If you get the Godzilla for lunch (~$11 w/soda) it'll be a struggle trying to have dinner, but well worth it. Great fries too, fresh taste. By far the better (and more crowded) burger option in the greater Boston area, especially if you're tired of the pint-sized burgers at Shake Shack or the good, but greasy whoppers at Tasty Burger. I hate to knock Eagles because I like the idea of "Eagles." It used to be the classic blues brother pig out joint where cheap food and local flavor was the order of the day. Quick aside: remember when you used to joke around with your high school friends and be all like, dude, you've changed and then lol about it. Even if you don't remember doing that, I would still have that conversation with Eagles only I'd be serious. They wall papered or painted the walls recently and took down all the historical pictures of people slam dancing giants burgers into their mouths and now it's just crowded and weird. What can I say about the legendary Eagle's Deli. I first heard of it when I saw it on Man vs. Food on the Travel Channel and when I moved to Brookline I had to give it a try. The first time I went I got the mushroom burger with cheese and lettuce and fries. After my first bite I claimed it was the best burger I'd had in my life. I've had my fair share of burgers in my time and I've even created my own and won awards for it and this was simply fantastic. The fries were crispy and delicious as well. Just an absolutely satisfying meal and for a reasonable price at that. I've also gotten the mozzarella sticks which were definitely on the higher end of the spectrum. Got a meal delivered and they were still hot and cheese still melted. Delivery took probably an hour but delivery times are always different in the area. They have a huge selection and I've heard rave reviews about their wraps and sandwiches as well. Do not miss this place and save it to your list of regular spots in the Brookline/Cleveland Circle area. read more

I've only ever gone to Eagle's for breakfast, and as such I can't comment on any of their other offerings. I can say, however, that for under $10 I always leave satisfied and beyond full. The home fries - delicious. Just enough potato and just enough crisp, with just enough onions for perfect flavoring. The eggs - always scrambled very nicely, and not over seasoned. I tend to throw a little extra salt and pepper on them but that's a personal preference. The bacon - awesome. A little crispy for my taste but never burnt. Basically your average tasty bacon. Now, for the real star of the show: the banana pancakes. These things are heavenly and mouthwatering and just the right amount of sweet and tart banana in perfectly golden-brown pancakes. I would eat them for breakfast lunch AND dinner if I had room in my stomach. Altogether this place is a VERY solid bet for breakfast food. The combos are well-priced and big, and the quality of the food is great. Just be warned it gets super busy on Saturday mornings. read more

After all of the hype that I saw on the travel channel, Eagles Deli left my disappointed. Eagles is a little hole in the wall joint right off of the Boston College campus. Don't get me wrong, I love hole in the wall joints, but Eagles really didn't live up to all of the hype. Don't get me wrong, the Burger was pretty good, but it was pretty expensive. I guess this was a case of a place not living up to my raised expectations. Eagle's Deli has the appearance of an old fashioned fast food hamburger place. It's about medium size, but its almost always crowded with carnivores. This creates a bustling, teeming environment. Wooden booths and tables line up the left and right sides. The kitchen is in open view. It is the centerpiece of the restaurant, allowing anyone inside to watch as their food is prepared. Although, their kitchen's basic, it's very clean. The food at this joint is pretty extreme. Their burgers are very juicy and made to order. It's a customize order place, which means that you can order your burgers any way you want with any topping you want--and boy do they have a variety of add ons! I went here with my brother and we both got the Godzilla. (1 lb. burger and 1lb fries.) Yes, it was inspired by the Travel Channel. The burger itself was okay. It's not a destination burger place. You come here because of the contest. The walls are covered in Polaroids of previous winners. We wanted to be those winners. A neighborhood legend, this Cleveland Circle eatery boasts being the #2 place to pig out in America, and has the walls plastered with snapshots of such pigs, who have been able to consume the Godzilla burger. My buddy who went to BC and now lives downtown, will trek out to Cleveland Circle just to pig out properly here. It's got dudes making omelettes on the grill, you pick up your own food and take it to a table. It was perfect for me after beingup for 30 hours on call, and, apparently, perfect for the 20-30 hung over BC kids who filled the place. I do think that it's dirty inside, and kind of expensive. Omelette, sandwich and side of pancakes = $20. A little much considering you get your own food and bus your own table. Of note, a homeless guy walked in, and the line cook gave him a plate of rice and beans. I was impressed with such tzedakah. EDIT: ate a tuna melt here. Honestly a lackluster restaurant, the staff at the counter had no clue what they were doing and stood there for twenty minutes arguing with a customer. Another thing to add would be that there was no clear area where the line began and the staff at the counter were very rude. There were also two people working cash registers with five employees standing in the back by the stoves doing nothing and not helping. The food was nothing special too, I ordered chocolate chip pancakes, and they were good and all but nothing as much of a tourist attraction as other items like their burgers and sandwiches. Hmm... where to begin. I have been going to Eagle's Deli for two years since I started going to Boston College out of the necessity of it being the only decent deli food in the area. BUT, I have decided to stop going because: 1) The owner is extremely cheap. Has charged me for a water cup before. Will charge you if you ask for a side of a dressing 2) Stingy portions, want Bacon on something? Expect only a piece or two. Fries with your burger? You'll only get maybe 10-12 fries. 3) Food takes forever to come out. 4) Price too expensive for what it is. 5) The owner is also invasive. Once came up to my friends and me and told us "Want to know how to get girls? Eat at Eagle's Deli!". Like what? Just kind of weird. I could think of other stories friends have told me. 6) The owner does not treat employees with respect. Employees are visibly scarred of the boss, and I have seen him get mad at them anytime. Overall the owner is really just interested in your money, does not care for anything else... in this world. No one from BC goes there anymore. I commend him to make changes and most of all treat employees with more respect. I recommend the Circle instead, it is right near Eagle's deli. Or Pino's Pizza, right next to it. read more

Went and got the Bianco Burger (1/2lb + grilled onions/peppers/shrooms + some kinda cheese) w/ Onion rings and shared some Chili cheese fries w/ a friend. And I gotta say... it was good! Not blow-your-mind amazing, but how many places really achieve that anyway? It was simply good, exactly what i wanted. PHEW, this place is a trip! Stopped in after work with a couple of people and very much appreciated the curtain between the door and the dining area. I especially liked it 45 minutes later when all the blood in my body was busy waging war on the food baby in my stomach, a deliciously well-cooked medium rare slab of ground beast. I like a burger that can stand up without condiments and toppings, and that's what Eagle's delivers, and in portions that would make the American Heart Association weep. I got a Cowboy with the toppings on the side, so in other words, a plain burger with a side of onions and bacon. The meat is tasty, if not a little on the salty side, but I like getting a true medium rare when I order it that way, and that's what I got on my plate. I would definitely recommend their burgers over the dogs, based on what one of my companions said - just not a satisfying meal, a hot dog. I also got a chocolate milkshake, and it was pretty satisfying. I wouldn't get it with a burger in the future, since it winds up as this massive heavy knot in your gutt. Definitely good in the summer, whenever THAT comes back, but it's a good drink on its own. I definitely want to come back and try breakfast. Oh Eagle's Deli, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways: 1) The burgers. I love burgers, and Eagles serves some of the best in Boston. This place gets a lot of press because of the size of the burgers. That misses the point, though, because the burgers have a great taste to them. Whether it's a standard cheeseburger, one with bacon and blue cheese, or any of the other options, they're all delicious. 2) The onion rings. They're fried perfectly. 3) The breakfasts. If you want a greasy, tasty breakfast, this is the place. They make classic diner offerings, and the home fries in particular are really good. 4) The deli sandwiches, particularly the chicken salad, are also great. The only drawback is that if you're getting a sandwich, you're missing out on the burgers. Look, if you are on a diet, this is not the place. But, if you want a delicious and cheap breakfast or lunch, this is the place. Parking is metered on the street. It's right on Beacon, so if you're in the area it is fairly easy to get to it. read more

I first learned about Eagles from The Fat Project on spark.com. They paid two lean people to gain 20 pounds in a month and took detailed and hilarious notes. People started sending loads of food in to fatten these two up, and someone sent a huge 20 pound burger from Eagles. I went to Eagles a while back with an American friend and her British boyfriend. We had all lived in Scotland together, and I once remember going to Tesco's and Andrew buying milk that marketed itself as "The Champagne of Milk." It had all of these chunks of cream in it and made this low-fat eating American shudder. So, Eagles was right up Andrew's alley and he wanted to eat a burger and get his picture on the wall, to immortalize his coronary inducing meal and lifestyle. I was a vegetarian at the time so I got some green beans and picked at my friend Sarah's french fries, which were tasty. Why four stars then? Because if memory serves me right, I know when I finally eat one of these burgers my life will be complete. I watched Andrew eat that greasy one pound burger with a pound of fries with wonderment, awe, and probably a little lust. For the burger, not for Andrew. My dad watches the Food Network, far too much. Apparently, this place was featured, so, upon his most recent visit from Reno, NV... he requested that we go to Eagles Deli. I kind of just stared at him weird, and requested Legal Seafood instead. Seems like the only time I get to go to that tourist attraction, is when my dad is in town. But no, he insisted on Eagles. So, we went. The menu was littered with amazing descriptions of their plentiful sandwiches, so I kind of got excited. I ordered some Thanksgiving turkey concoction, excited to have the meal in July. It came. I saw. And I just stared at its limp, lifeless body, before finally pushing it away. WTF? The description was EPIC, and mouth-watering. The plate was gross, and the fries were limp. Amazing!!! I ordered the "Border Burger": lettuce, jalapeños, avocado and cheddar cheese topped with an onion ring. Absolutely delicious. The 1/2 pound burger was cooked perfectly, nice and pink in the middle and deliciously juicy. As I bit into it, the juices began rolling down my chin and down my hands... It was definitely worth having to use all of the extra napkins. Their selection is there, but doesn't really do it justice. All in all, I would only go here if you are looking for a quick burger before heading out somewhere else, or if you are in foodler range and want a burger. After a second visit to Eagles this past weekend, I have to update their rating. Since it wasn't opening week the food came out much faster, than last time and the staff was much friendlier than before. They also informed me about the extra substitute charges and were very well informed about the menu. I still dislike the new look! Old review: While I know you don't come to Eagles Deli for the "look" I have to say I was very disappointed in their renovation. First off, it's 2010 and it looks like that place was last updated in the 80's- what were they thinking?? I stood in line one of the first days it opened to try one of their burgers. From when I walked in the door to when I got my food it was well over 30 - 40 minutes later. The burger was alright, nothing special. I subbed a salad for fries which they charged me an extra dollar for and wasn't told about. When the food was delivered there was no silverware, and when I asked about it the person just pointed to where it's located. Also, while my friend and I sat down at the table a long line backed up so as we ate we had hungry people standing right over our table waiting to place their order. Again, I don't know what they were thinking when they redid this place. The good thing is that for a local place, it has ok food- just bad design taste! read more
