A lunch review. In and out in under an hour worked great for us. Prime rib dip was what I enjoyed. Adult grilled cheese the other enjoyed. We both enjoyed the HUGE pile of fresh cut French fries and appreciated they kept our water glasses full. Beer: 5 stars Food: 3 stars Math = 4 stars Seriously, I was BLOWN AWAY by the beer selection here. Like, Home-Alone-slap-your-virgin-face-with-after-shave-and-scream-levels of blown away. Not only do they have a TON of taps. Pay no attention to some of the older reviews that specify the number of taps. The current number is now: 64. I'll say that again SIXTY-FOUR taps. If there is a place in the state of AK with more taps than that, I would like to know where it is. Currently, to my brain, this place is the current Sourdough Tap King. Anyway, not only do they have the MOST taps. They have some really unique stuff. There were beers on tap here that I've never even seen for sale at the larger Brown Jug warehouses! There are beers on tap I didn't even know were distributed in AK! Most impressive. The food, was just OK. I got some tacos and they were alright. They filled me up but weren't much to write home about. Given the Gambrinian fortitude on display here, I will definitely be back. Good average food, huge portions, slow service by American standards but I'm a slow eater and sometimes feel hustled out of restaurants- not here! The wait staff is incredibly friendly and on the water-situation. I like it here and have been here twice around lunch, on a weekday and a weekend. The lunch special is lovely and well-portioned without being so so much like the typical entrees, and the salads are excellent. The nacho app is enormous, even the small could probably feed 3 average people! My only complaint is the nachos need more jalapeños, salsa, and more beans... but that's just my personal love of spice speaking. They do have tabasco and siracha if you ask! read more

I don't know where to begin. I had the Midnight Sun Panty Peeler hefe and that was so yummy. For dinner I had the prime rib burrito, and hands down the best burrito I have ever had. I was hesitant about ordering until our waiter confirmed it was a good choice. My dad had the prime rib dip, and it was awesome as well. Wonderful seasoned fries too. All in all, I'm still thinking about the yummy burrito, unique and delicious. It was huge,but couldn't help myself and ate the whole thing! Went in a second for what my dad claimed is the best pizza he has ever had. So we ordered a large meat lovers pizza. And WOW the pizza was really delicious. I don't know if it was the sauce or the crust, but the flavor was great. Crust was not overly thick, or thin for that matter. Just really good. Great pizza, excellent service in a sports bar atmosphere. I will be looking at one more visit before I head back home tomorrow read more

First time here - love the ambience! Their beer in taps was impressive! 60! I say again 60 beers!!!! The hostess was accommodating and allowed to get our drinks and food order in at the bar while we waited for a table to open up. Plenty of TV screens and projector screen to watch your fav sports. And for a casual space, the leather cushioned seats were a nice touch! We ordered the meat lovers pizza - their one and only size was a good portion to feed two. The sauce to dough ratio was perfect and flavorful. I could actually hold up one slice one-handed without it wilting and topping sliding off. I usually never eat the last piece of crust...I ate the last piece of crust - NOM NOM NOM! The dough was that good! I'm hardly go to Eagle River for anything, but now I have a reason :D read more

The Eagle River Ale House has a rustic flare with Southern hospitality. All the staff were extremely accommodating even with my Vegan diet restrictions. The 23 yr old chef made me a custom pizza with Jalepeno infused oil. The chef mentioned he loves being creative and if you have diet restrictions just give him 1-2 weeks notice and he'll make dishes to accommodate your dietary restrictions. read more

Apparently this place changed its name to Matanuska Brewery in the last few months and they failed to retain any of the previous staff that had a slight clue at what they were doing. Expect at least 45 minutes from order to food even when it's not busy. Since we never got our food I can't comment on the quality of said food. It's been a few years since I've actually ate here, usually I just stop in for a beer or two. I stopped in for lunch and was actually shocked to see the prices on the menu and, by the amount of empty seats which should've told me something right away. I ordered the spicy burger which I'll admit was good but, it was not $18 bucks good. If your going to charge $18 bucks for a burger it better damn well be on point, including the fries which were unbelievably soggy. What's funny is that I paid $7.95 for a burger from the Arctic Roadrunner and was just as pleased. Bottom line, the food is overpriced for the quality of it. You know this place is popular when half the cars are parked illegally, and by that I mean every which way and no organization, just where ever you can fit. That and the lines are blurred even before you get here. My lunch visit was filled with local craft IPA's, pizza, sandwiches, fries and great conversations. I was turned onto ERAH, or as some recent Marine buddies call it Oorah because that's their thing. You walk in and it's a classic beer place, tons of signs, both neon and non of what seemed to be hundred's of different beers. They don't have quite that many, but their selection is excellent and that's coming from a San Diegan. Pizza is big up here in Alaska, so I was hoping that both supply and demand would raise the bar. 3rd best pizza I had that week. My bar buddies spoke highly of their chicken ranch bake which is a pulled chicken sandwich with bbq and ranch dressing. It's a little sloppy, but pretty darn good. Fries are nice and crispy and yes the portions were large. I also went with the lunch special slice of the day, with a salad, soup and drink. BBQ chicken pizza was only ok. The crust was bland, the toppings were good alone, but the just BBQ didn't blend it all together. My salad was good, nice and thick on the ranch, skip the olives. My soup was way too thick from crème and lost it's tomato-ness, almost chunky. Soda's are the large 20oz old school plastic style which I like because they have Mr. Pibb. My pepperoni pizza was much better with a nice cheese melt and crispy pepperoni's, but again that dough does nothing to enhance things. They also really like adding fresh tomato's to top their pizza's which makes it feel like bruschetta. A bit more of a sports bar feel the staff is nice. Food comes fast and service is great once seated, but it's jamming during lunch. Prices are good and the locals love this place. Décor is a bit of a snow lodge feel with a wood heavy vibe and large windows facing the street, tall roof for 2nd floor which I didn't check out. I expected to see pies being tossed, but don't recall them at all, see what I mean about blurred lines. Beer, I had a few local IPA's. For more on that you can find my untapped profile. I did like how they offered a variety of styles like a few gose's, sours, lambic's, and saison's. Very heavy on the IPA selection and they haven't been overly inundated with labelling or carrying unnecessarily labelled "sessionable" beers. It's actually a term that hasn't hipsterfied Alaska yet. You session your Coors lite and I'll session my Ruination. All in all it was a great place to come for a big meal, some good beers and a very local vibe. read more

We've consistently had good food here and the staff has gone out of their way at times to better the experience. My wife and I have shared a large salad as one of our dishes and they picked up on it and actually split it into 2 dishes. That makes it nice because then I don't have to worry about her cooties. The reviews on Yelp made me nervous about going here, as well as my friends' experience where four times they got the Thai pizza and each time it was different. And the difference wasn't it getting better each time. With that info in my head, i went with a burger since it seemed a safe bet. I asked the waitress if I could get my burger medium rare. Not sure why that's so tough to do around here, but it is. She said that she could get one of the cooks to do it but not the other. She'd check and come back. Excellent. I'd much rather hear that than a quick, 'sure' and then it doesn't happen (which has happened to me elsewhere). I went with the black and bleu burger and fries and my friend had a burger as well. I also had the double mocha porter. I didn't notice all that much of a chocolate flavor to it, but it was a good porter all the same. We got our food in a reasonable amount of time (we went at 5pm or so on a Sunday) and my waitress assured me that she got them to cook it medium rare for me. Yeah, not so much. It was medium well- not a lick of pink in it, just like my friend's when she didn't request anything special. Still, it was a good burger- the blacking spices were done correctly and it was dripping bleu cheese. The waitress was around to see us several times, and I gave her a good tip for at least trying to get me what I wanted. The prices on the apps are ridiculously high, that I agree with. I usually get one, but not for that amount. Apps should never be the same prices as the meal (or more). If they are, you are doing it wrong. Cut down the size, make it possible to get half orders- do something because I'll never order them when they are that high. For the price of the nachos, I could get steamer clams at Bear Tooth. Clams are quite a bit pricier than chips and cheese. Come on. My friend also ordered dessert which was quite small for the amount paid. I'd go back again if someone wanted to go there, but not until I tried to convince them to go to Jalapeno's instead. read more

This place's problem is its management. Examples: Don't claim to have lots of beers, then not have the beers you claim. My buddy and I had to settle for our third and second choices, respectively. My overpriced food ($13 for 10 wings) came quickly, 7 mins or so. My buddy's overpriced pizza (18", $25) came a half hour later. They have a big sign claiming free wifi, but to use it you need to ask for a code. We had to wait 45 mins because they didn't have the correct paper for the code to be written on. And the code is only good for 30 minutes. Meaning you have to ask for a new code every 30 minutes you're there. The codes should be good for 2 hours minimum. Want red peppers for your pizza? Ask and you'll get a teaspoon in a small cup. Same for the ketchup. They need to loosen up with the condiments. This place has potential. To realize it, it needs new management. read more

The beer selection is wide, but, I'm not a big fan of most Alaskan beers, so for me, just meh on that count. I got Buffalo Wings to split with the wife and asked for them Extra Spicy, and got the goofy warning from the bartender that I might not be able to handle it. When the wings arrived, they smelled fairly normal. I took one bite and asked for a bottle of hot sauce. My brother, 6-year old niece and I waited over an hour for our mediocre food. I got the burger wrap, my brother got the fettuccine and my niece wanted a simple grilled cheese. We waited due to a large party sitting next to us. I understand food takes a while when parties are taking place but we were never given a heads up that they just sat down and our orders would be a while. Even our simple drink orders took a while to be brought out. Second time in since the change and not impressed. Just trash. Took more than an hour for the food to get to us, forgivable when its busy, but busy it wasn't. Food was cold, both burgers were dry and over cooked (wasn't asked how 'done' we'd like the meat) and not seasoned, the blue cheese burger is said to have the patty 'rolled in cajun seasoning.' The other burger didn't come with any condiments. Wait staff never came by to check on us and had to be found to ask for silverware and condiments. When we were seated they asked if upstairs was ok, but failed to mention that there would be live music or if that would be ok with us. It was not. Thankfully we were able to leave before the first song was over. Will not be coming back, which is super disappointing because this was a favorite place with really good food. Fun atmosphere and a large selection of local beers. The prime rib tacos were excellent and I will go back to get them again, no doubt! My wife loves the southwest grilled chicken salad and orders it regularly. The portions are large so be prepared to take home lunch for the next day. read more

I love finding local places like this Ale House! Great drinks, amazing food and fantastic staff! Our appetizer of Nachos was one of the tastiest that I've ever had! That's saying a lot considering I've had a lot of Nachos! These nachos were piled high with salsa, cheese, beans and so many delicious toppings! My main concern was making sure we had fresh chips and they were on point. These nachos didn't disappoint. For my main course I had a chicken Cesar salad with the blackened chicken. It was so tasty. I honestly can't wait to come back with its great location and food, this is going to be one of my go to spots! read more

The pizza was great. The burger was pretty good. The service was abysmal- and we were one of two tables between lunch and dinner. Took a while to get our drinks (no other tables to be waited on), then we waited 10 minutes for appetizers, followed immediately (we had just started the wings) by my son's pizza. Then, I watched him eat long enough that I had actually decided she forgot my burger, was just about to say something, when she brought it out. My son had nearly FINISHED his pizza. We then waited about 10 more minutes, got up and got our own takeout pizza box, put on our coats, and stood at the table at least another 5 minutes before our server peeks it from the back and noticed us wanting to leave. I've been here multiple times since I live so close and was only impressed once. The food is very hit or miss and not consistent at all. The fries are soggy most times (except that once) and the sandwiches are greasy. If you order a burger, expect it to come out well done no matter how you order it. The pizza is sub-par but the beer selection is great! Whoever the chef was that one night I was actually impressed needs to work more often and maybe train the others! On another note; I've only been here 2 times for breakfast and have no complaints. I believe I got the breakfast burrito both times and it was good. read more

This is a great bar, the beers on tap are extensive and if you can't find your favorite, there's something else you'll like.The food is better than when they first opened. I think the pizza crust was frozen then, but now tastes fresher. Upstairs is now open and that seems to help get seated downstairs sooner. If you're looking for a place with good bar food, burgers, steaks, pizza, this is it. My husband & I had burgers, our daughters had pizza & steaks. We weren't disappointed. Ambience helped by the HUGE TV showing Eagles preseason football. The beer is small batch from Glacier Brewhouse, but we need to save that for another visit. Industrial brew pub interior with exposed ceiling beams, HVAC vents and surface conduit. Total engineer geek-out. Decent breakfast selection. Mamosa... Orange juice and PBR... passed on that one... Pitstop. Always nice to have a decent selection of draft beers... ordered Ahi taco and Primerib taco. To my surprise the portion passed as a taco salad IMO. I have to admit The Eagle River Ale House is the type of place I really, really want to like. So many different beers on tap. Megasteins for around 9 bucks. Big screens TVs everywhere. It's just an atmosphere that really appeals to me. Food: I dig most everything I've had at the ER Ale House. The salads are HUGE, the pizza is very good and the prime burger is awesome (albeit a little pricey for a burger but the inclusion of shaved prime beef makes it worthwhile). Food prices: are about on par with what you'll pay in other pub style establishments in Anchorage. I wouldn't call it the most affordable sit down place to eat in Eagle River but overall most entrees are under 20 bucks with a few exceptions. Atmosphere: It's a fairly loud place lots of echoing especially on very busy nights or during football on Sunday (they show ll the NFL games via NFL Sunday Ticket!!). Sometimes it's hard to have a conversation with someone sitting right next to you which is why ER Ale House is probably not my first choice for a quiet sit down dinner with my wife. Plus with the large military population of ER there are lots of young families in the area so don't be surprised to see them patronizing the Ale House. Probably not my first choice for a place to take young ones but to each their own. For the most part it stays pretty tame but it can get a little ruckus later in the evening, especially on weekends, and when NFL games are on. Beer: beer, beer, beer!! What more can I say. They have something like 75 different taps with lots of really great local craft brews. You can also get a megastein (32 oz) of many of the brews for only 9 bucks which makes for a pretty economical outing. read more
