The place was small but it's not busy season yet so we were seated quickly and the food was served in a reasonable amount of time. I read another review that said the place smelled like smoke, and while it did smell a little like fry oil, I feel like the smell went away and the food and company far outweighed any odd smells. **POOR SERVICE BY THE OWNER: GROUP OF ARRIVING CRUISE CUSTOMERS** We arrived in Anchorage after a wonderful 9-day cruise and decided to stop by Basecamp Eatery with a group of 22 people around 1 p.m. The young lady serving us was very friendly and accommodating. Our group leader had previously tried to make a reservation, but the restaurant advised us simply to come in. To streamline the ordering process, we used the menu on their website to place our orders before arriving but that did not work out. Upon our arrival and after being seated, the initial service from the young lady was pleasant. However, I noticed a change when the owner arrived and began serving some of us. The first issue I encountered was a price discrepancy of about $5.00 between the website menu and the in-restaurant menu. This discrepancy made it seem as if there was one menu for tourists and another for locals. The owner was not friendly at all; he failed to inform us, as most waitstaff would, that there would be an upcharge for certain items offered as part of the meal. When he asked, "Do you want chowder or chips?" he neglected to mention that a tiny cup of chowder cost $5.00 more, which was not worth it. Instead, he acted as if it was included in our meal until you got your bill, which is deceptive. His demeanor was cold and uncaring, and it seemed he simply wanted us to leave based on how he treated us. After delivering the food, he never returned to check on us and simply handed us the bill in a detached manner. When I questioned him about the $5.00 upcharge, he pointed to the small print on the menu without saying a word. Others in our group experienced similar treatment from him. As a managing director for a major airline with over 36 years of travel experience, I have never encountered such poor and deceptive behavior as I did at Basecamp Eatery. It seemed like he truly had a problem with customers like us. I shared my experience with our bus driver and the travel company we booked with, expressing my dissatisfaction with the restaurant. I was disappointed with my experience at BaseCamp Eatery because it was so many red flags that it looked like a Theme Park. While choking at the bar from all the grill smoke, I could see directly into the kitchen area, and I noticed what appeared to be a pile of dirty towels with flies fighting in the air over them. Seeing that made the dining environment feel less clean than I expected and significantly reduced my appetite. After this first trigger, I started looking around and noticed food crumbs, a rotten lemon wedge, and just trash in various places across the floor. I also observed personal unsanitary behavior from the manager that I felt was unprofessional in a food-service setting. (Pulled a wedgie with such aggression that I thought he was in extreme pain and then went to go grab 2 pounds of crab legs without washing his hands.) I think his name is Michael? Because of what I saw, I left with extreme concerns about the restaurant's cleanliness standards and overall attention to presentation. We didn't experience a great first impression of customer service considering we're the only two dining in for about half an hour before the next patrons popped in. My uncle said three times, "Hello!" Male staff appeared to be more focused on laptop and finally responded, "I'll be there." When male staff arrived to our table, my uncle said, "We're ready to order." Customer service gradually improved with male staff and after a female employee arrived while we indulged in soup, appetizer and main entree. Restaurant was completely out of king crab and oysters when we clarified with the male staff, saw the sticker labeled out on menu and their morning shipment didn't arrive. Smoked Salmon + Clam Chowder in a bowl was a winner! Highly ideal for below zero degrees Fahrenheit weather. Able to taste both fresh Alaskan smoked salmon and clams. Toasted bread complemented this fabulous chowder. Smoked Salmon Spread with cream cheese, thinly sliced baguette, on a bed of leafy greens, capers, red onions, cucumbers, and red, orange and yellow bell peppers. Everything made fresh and tasty! 1 lb Dungeness crab was served heat hot with two containers of drawn butter. Loved how the shell was very easy to crack, peel, pulled out the fresh crab meat. Also got the ahi tuna bowl and that was amazing. The king crab apparently is phenomenal, but $415 for 3 pounds is a bit pricey. I travel quite a bit for work and fun, and Basecamp in Girdwood stands out as an absolute highlight. We stumbled onto it via Yelp looking for a quick dinner before driving back to Anchorage, but the moment we walked through the doors, we realized we were in for something special. I love the place. It's welcoming. It has delicious food. We arrived to Alaska and the very first evening. We decided to have dinner and this was the place we picked. Of course, in Alaska that you have to try all the seafood and everything that it's known for so we went for the oysters because we absolutely love oysters, and these were delicious. I supremely enjoyed them. We also had the garlic cheesy pasta- it was delicious. The kids cheeseburger was phenomenal. A good portion also. We also had the chowder, which was tasty. I've been coming here for a while now, service and food have always been exceptional. I particularly love the fettuccine in garlic cream sauce with chicken. We came in on Saturday 8/2 for lunch, and I elected not t have the heavy cream pasta for lunch, and went for a Jalapeno burger instead, husband ordered the chowder. I did not recognize any of the staff, except for one of the servers, who I've seen before. The other servers kept having to ask her for guidance. The boss was also notably absent - Salmonfest was happening, so maybe the staff were attending. (The bar across the road were closed due to Salmonfest, which is the only way I knew it was happening) A lone chowder was up on the pass, sitting there for a while, but no sign of my patty on the grill. A couple who came in after us were served before us, and still the chowder sat there. Eventually, I was handed my burger and he was given the chowder that had sat for a while on the pass. I removed the onion and pickles from my burger, I assembled it, took one bite, and a gush of red myoglobin shot out, the interior of the burger was rare, it looked raw to be honest - I always ask for well done, but my husband interrupted and requested medium. I eat medium rare steak all the time - I love it, but the cooking rules for steaks don't hold true for ground beef temperatures, this is because the germs that are present on the surface of a steak, stay on the surface and are killed during the cooking process, but for ground beef, there are multiple "surfaces" and the interior of the burger must be cooked to 160f to eliminate the germs within. I personally like my burgers well done because then I know I won't get salmonella or E.Coli. I do not believe it's safe to eat rare burgers. This was a disgusting burger, and I handed it back to the server, who asked me if it was not cooked to the temperature I liked? Excuse me? it's raw, and sitting in a pool of red, I was about to explode with anger. She gave it back to the cook, who just put it back on the griddle. It came back to me, well done, but in the same bun, which by this time was flattened and worse for wear. The recooked burger lacked seasoning. It was not good. I ate half. The server comped my burger, which under the circumstances was the least she could do. I seriously hope these were temporary staff, and that the regular staff were at Salmonfest. Upon stepping in, the place was filled with smoke as if from burnt fish. This should have been the first sign to leave. In our party of 4, my order was the dungeness crab and was served first, then my daughter's hummus and my wife's beet and goat cheese salad sub strawberries because they were out of beets with a side of halibut and then my son's poke bowl with green peppers rather than seaweed. Upon picking up the crab I realized that the shell was cold, truly cold and not warm, not a good first sign, but I opened up a leg hoping that it retained some heat internally, but no dice. My wife and son said that they noticed that it had been sitting up at the pass, having been put there along with another crab order, a while before our table was served. My wife's halibut was steaming. I sent it back because I'm not paying $39 for a cold dinner. My wife and son swear they saw the cook put the crab back in a pot (my back was to the kitchen so I didn't have a view). I was offered a new one but I passed. Shortly thereafter my son and wife were gasping, because they had left my plate with its side of vegetables at the pass and put "another" crab on it and served it to the table next to us. Was it the crab I was served and was put back in the pot? Who knows, but the fact they served my plate to another customer is a fact and it's outrageous. This area is a food desert. There were 2 or maybe three restaurants that had closed down on the same street. Consider a hard pass at staying in this area unless cooking on vacation is the norm for you anyway, or you are comfortable getting cajun away from New Orleans. read more

We found this place on Yelp after visiting a nearby animal conservation center, and it's nestled in Girdwood just a few miles off Seward Highway. This place is tiny inside. There are around eight tables and seats at a bar for roughly a dozen. There were a few empty tables from we arrived, but they had been reserved, so we waited a few minutes for another party to leave. Three of us ordered the chowder ($8 cup, $12 bowl) plus a steak quesadilla ($18) to split. Our fourth had a cheeseburger ($19) that came with chips (option for a side salad). The chowder was delicious and came with two slices of baguette each. Lots of flavor, whole clams, and plenty of salmon and potatoes - highly recommend. If it is your main course, definitely go for the bowl. The cheeseburger was a freshly made patty, very juicy with toppings of lettuce, tomato, and onion. Service was good, a bit slow in that it took around 30 minutes for our food to arrive. That was frustrating because three of the items were soup that was literally being served out of a huge vat. There seemed to be only one line cook and two tour groups in the restaurant were served before us even though we had ordered first. Basecamp has been on my list for sometime and I've seen their deals in the local Val-Pak. Basecamp's attentive solo server, is really efficient. She'll take care of you...and everyone else. Unfortunately, she works with a cook who, to put it plainly, doesn't want to be there, and he isn't shy about letting the entire restaurant know. We visited on a Saturday evening. We were seated in the last avail back booth. The restaurant is bright and cozy. With decent local tap options, we were able to enjoy a local stout and blonde. We ordered a salmon dip appetizer, (as they had just ran out of chowder), 1lb crab legs with steamed veggies ($40), cajun pasta and a white cream pasta. The cook came out to tell the server that our order was "a lot of food for 2 people,"......he said he "wanted to see this!" It was rude. Soon after, the solo server gets off the phone with "Chair 5 Restaurant," who lets her know "they're unable to accommodate a family with babies." Solo server, being the considerate gem she is, gave the cook a heads up. Said "family with babies," walks in and the cook huffed and puffed and said "shit,".........Sir.........did you not JUST get the heads up from your server, about this?! The Cajun pasta was "better later," but definitely on the noticeably sweeter side. The crab legs were dungeonness. Incredible dinner and experience at Basecamp. Service and options were great. Kids menu for the 10 year old, she chose the butter noodles and ate every bite. We splurged and split a pound of crab, small shrimp Caesar, and the jalapeño burger with side ranch salad. 16 yo had a regular cheeseburger with chips. The crab meat was perfect even though the shell wasn't crispy so it made it a little tough to "crack" open, but a couple pairs of shears did the job. The crab was served with drawn butter and boiled, seasoned potatoes and vegetables that were incredible! The shrimp were perfectly cooked on the Caesar, the dressing tasted like it was made in house 10/10. The restraint had a vintage homie vibe representative of the area with vintage fixtures, unique seating, and local artwork. I ordered the smoked salmon clam chowder and after taking my first bite I turned to my uncle and said "you are going to love this" and I was right. The soup was hearty, creamy, smooth, and filled with flavor. The smoked salmon was prevalent but not overpowering. I enjoyed it so much I considered licking the bowl. We sat at the bar at Basecamp, which turned out to be a huge mistake. Right away, we were greeted by a sweaty crew. Not exactly pleasant, but we figured we'd give the place a chance. From the bar, you can see the grill and food being plated. What we saw was downright disgusting. We ordered two cheeseburgers. A few minutes later, we watched the cook throw the patties on the grill -- and that's when things went off the rails. The guy was drenched in sweat and wearing a single blue glove that he used for absolutely everything. He handled raw meat, touched plated food under the heat lamp, wiped the glove on his shirt, and never changed it once. I was already queasy watching it, but then came the deal-breaker. He touched raw salmon with the same glove, then went right back to handling cooked food and grabbing spatulas. No glove change, no handwashing, nothing. Just total cross-contamination happening in plain sight. My wife and I looked at each other, stood up, and left. There was no way we were going to risk getting sick, especially while on vacation. Watching it happen live, knowing your food is up next, makes you lose all confidence in the kitchen. Sure, things like this might happen behind closed doors, but when you see it with your own eyes, it's a whole different level of gross. We dodged a $50 bullet, and possibly a ruined trip. First night we got salads and a shared trough of steamed mussels. Everything tasted great. Second visit we shared some seared ahi and 2 cups of their seafood chowder. There's an array of beers and wine, and at least a couple boozy choices like bottled fruit margaritas. I don't recall if I noticed a full bar or cocktails. The waiter we interacted with was a very nice man, on point in all ways. While the vibe and decor is nice in here, there's a noticeable difference inside, best I can describe it is a lack of feminine touch. It's clean, but very.... Masculine? Not necessarily a bad thing.
