Don't go here unless you are a local. This is a place for folks that work the lifts/other restaurants in town. If that's not you, you have no business coming here unless it's really late at night...and if that's true...you can find better food back in Anchorage. The food is not bad, but it ain't good. You will be paying Girdwood prices for the type of food you could make at home when you were 24. The vibes are not bad, but they are pretty pedestrian. Service is slow as hell. Expect to open the door, obey the "wait to be seated" sign...and just be standing there for 5-10 minutes without so much as a "we'll be right with you!" read more

Burnt the pizza; the pizza felt and tasted like a burnt cracker, I told the server and he said it doesn't look burnt... Server was slow and unpleasant for the most part. The space was nice and cozy, but that all I got good to say bout this spot. read more

The food was good, but unfortunately, the service and seating arrangement were disappointing. We came as a family of three, but they were very strict about table seating. Since we were a smaller group, we were seated at a crowded table very close to other customers, which made the experience uncomfortable. What was frustrating was that we noticed the other half of the restaurant was not being used, yet customers were still being seated so closely together. They also have a pool table placed in the middle of the restaurant, which makes the space feel even more crowded and difficult to enjoy. It also seems like a potential safety hazard, especially with people walking around while others are playing. Overall, while the food was good, the service was almost nonexistent, and the seating arrangement and crowded layout made the experience far from enjoyable. There is definitely room for improvement when it comes to both customer service and how the space is being used. read more

We decided to give this place a try and really enjoyed the halibut tacos, they were delicious and definitely my favorite. We also tried the elk bison burger, which wasn't really my favorite, but it was my first time trying it. The restaurant itself is nice and in a cute location. The service, however, was pretty slow. We also weren't given utensils with our food and had to wait and ask another waitress for them since ours was not around! read more

We came here, four of us, after a day at the Aleyeska Spa. It's a bar that serves food. Nothing fancy. We were seated promptly. The waitress was pouring water into our glasses - kind of. She was pouring out of the side instead of the spout. There was no ice in the pitcher. She was dumping half of the water all over the table. Went in with a veteran and his service dog (with permission). Had a waitress who obviously did not like this decision. Waitress came to take order, stepped on said dog for which dog simply jumped out of her way without a sound. Manager(?) came over and quite rudely and in a derogatory manner demanded we leave immediately because the dog barked at server. The dog never barked and patrons at nearby table agreed. Manager (?) said 2 servers lied and said dog barked and we had to leave. This is a despicable way to treat a customer and regardless of any response from restaurant, we will never again visit this location and encourage anyone else to reconsider. read more

I would have given more, except for the very slow food coming out of the kitchen, and the poor halibut tacos. The Margherita Napolitano pizza was very good. The Alaskan Wild Game burger was good. However, the Halibut Tacos was definitely not worth the price we paid. Very little halibut, just crumbs basically. Too much jalapeño and cabbage. And the kitchen was very slow in getting food out. We had at least 15-20 minutes between each dish coming out, if not more. I don't know if the kitchen was just slammed that night or not. Short version - Worst food and service in Alaska. Go somewhere in Girdwood. Long version - I went to dinner with my family (6 of us). I ordered the game burger and added an additional patty. The waitress (I think her name was Zoey) acknowledged this request. My burger came out first but was missing the extra patty. Shortly thereafter, the meals for 4 people in my party were served. They had forgotten my son's cheeseburger. I let the woman who dropped off our food that I was missing a patty and my son didn't get his cheeseburger. "Well it wasn't written on the ticket,"she said. "OK. But we ordered it." I replied. "Alright. We'll get those out shortly," she stated. Shortly?!?! Everyone the table finished their entire meals before my son's cheeseburger was served and he finished his meal before my extra patty was served. My young children were getting impatient and my wife took them outside to play. At this point the first patty was cold and I was left to eat my overcooked burger by myself. My father-in-law came back inside as I was finishing up my uninspired meal and asked our server if he could get a separate bill for he and his wife. "We don't split bills for parties of 6 or more people AND there's an automatic 20% gratuity . What a racket. The food sucked, the service was worse, and our server was automatically over tipped. Worst Father's Day dinner I have ever had. PS - I looked at their website when writing this review. It states that parties of 6 or more will have an automatic 15% gratuity. Chair 5 a bar place in Girdwood. We walked in and no one greeted us for sometime. There were people dining but I guess not much employees at this place. It took several minutes until someone noticed us. We get seated and the hostess said they were so busy. She did kinda explained why maybe service was slow. We only ordered burgers. Food, bad quality and badly prepared. We had lunch here today at 2:30 pm. Burger is less than 8 oz (as advertised). Burger meat blend itself is dry. Burger overcooked. Waiter said all cooked to medium---not this one. It was not seasoned. Bacon strip was cold. French fries weren't enough, warm, looked like the leftover from the bottom of the pile. Each burger is $20!...c'mon!!! No hostess, appeared in 10 minutes. Seating took another 10 minutes. She and waiter were nice and apologetic. Came here on a Sunday afternoon for some lunch. Upon entry we could see a number of open tables, however none of them were cleared off from the previous patrons. Therefore, when we arrived we had to wait 15 minutes for the bartender to come out and clear off all of the tables for us to be seated. The atmosphere was loud and there were several kids running around the restaurant screaming. The server/bartender took 20 minutes to come take our order and we noticed him taking orders from other tables around us that had come after we had arrived. We had to wait an additional 25 minutes for the food to be served. The "chicken Alfredo" was horrendous, I have never seen that much oil at the bottom of a plate of chicken Alfredo. After waiting over an hour to get our food, which was a simple chicken quesadilla and 3 steak tacos, the best tasting thing was the stale store bought chips that came with the tacos. The tortillas were soggy. The tacos were dripping everywhere. I've made better quesadillas at home. The tortillas weren't toasted or anything. The steak on the tacos was bland and unseasoned. At one point the waitress told us 6 more minutes for our food to come out, and we waited over ten minutes more before seeing our food. The check came out to 50 bucks after all this. I want to start off positive saying that the server (a tall black gentleman) was great and the main reason for the only 2 stars. He had good energy and was obviously trying his best despite what seemed like poorly coordinated restaurant management. We drove 40+ minutes from Anchorage because of being back in town for the first time in a long time (used to live here). We remembered the calamari being great and wanted to come back for it. It shows on the menu on the website and online still. We arrived to find that it had been removed from the menu in person but not online. Trying to make the best out of it we ordered an app and two entrees. Big regret due to the amount of time it took (over 40 minutes for the app and almost an hour for the food) plus being subpar quality wise and also making both of us feel sick later after eating. We ate all of it despite not enjoying the taste much (because it was very overpriced and we paid for it) but then later regretted it when we both felt like it may not stay in our stomachs. We both had halibut, mine in the tacos and my husband's as fish/chips. Disappointed because we had great memories from years ago but it seems like the kitchen coordination and food quality are not what they used to be. I will not recommend it and actually want everyone to know they don't have calamari any longer, it would be great if they'd remove it from online so it's clear! read more

If you don't want to spend your time sitting inside of a building while you're in Alaska, do not visit this place. We have four kids and it took an hour and 20 minutes to get our food. We ended up getting it to go. We had to grab our own seltzers from the fridge next to the bar because the waitress never brought them to us. After an hour of waiting, we requested our food in to go boxes and it still took another 20 minutes. I better not fail to mention they forgot my son's chowder in the to-go bags. I ordered a big game burger for $27. I was very underwhelmed but with friends and didn't really think about it until I was almost done. Burger was about as well done as any I ever had. Over cooked. Then I realized the server never asked how I want it cooked. I asked her about that and she said they don't ask customers how they want it done. For A $27 burger that's crazy. Casual spot with lots of menu options. We had a good pizza and Caesar salad. I think we got lucky and had prompt service and food prep. However we did try to go two other times and the hostess was unfriendly and painfully slow both times, regardless of the line out the door. Big downgrade from what this place used to be. Apparently the restaurant has changed ownership very recently. We have come twice this past week or so, and everything has been below average across the board. We got shrimp tacos and the shrimp isn't seasoned. Like, at all. Nor is it grilled... I think it may have been poached and chilled, then put the in the taco. The shells are raw tortillas, not homemade, not hot. The tacos are loaded with raw largely chunked pieces of red onion. Terribly sad dish. I do not recommend. On our last visit we got a pizza, The Italian I think. It was served to us stale and COLD. Like, maybe it had been sitting around for an hour. I would've sent it back but we were with a large group of people and I just didn't want to spoil the mood. The waitstaff have been humdrum. Not much etiquette, somewhat blasé. The last young man we got did not care enough or was simply inept in the task of splitting a 3-way bill. The final straw for us was when my husband got sick for 2 days likely from the dirty beer taps here. Worst dining experience in my life at Girdwood's Chair 5 tonight. Six of our party of 9 were served relatively promptly. Three others -- our guests from Mexico -- were not served at all. About the time the first 6 were finishing, waiter came over and told one of the three that they didn't have the ingredients to cook her coconut shrimp dinner and asked if she would like to order something else. Sadly, all this woman wanted when first ordering was a bowl of clam chowder, but we were told they were out when we got there. Also, no tortilla chips for nachos. She graciously changed order to a burger because it would be fast. Burger came out and the other two had STILL not been served. It was 45 minutes after the first six were served and 15 minutes after everyone had finished. The last 2 canceled their orders. Bill came out and they rightly didn't charge for the last 3, including the burger that had to be reordered. But they added a 20 percent gratuity for a large party! We visited Chair 5 for lunch, during the winter season. Their interior is woody and uniquely Alaskan. We felt comfortable with our additional needs son in tow. Music was bumpin', which further added to the great vibes. Our waitress was accommodating, while also allowing us space to breathe. We ordered hot buffalo wings well done and with zero complaints. We ordered halibut chunks that came with all the right dipping sauces and a few of their chicken strips meals. Highly recommend Chair 5 for a family friendly meal. Can't wait to return. read more

I had a good time grabbing the Thai chicken pizza here. The waitress was very quiet and honored our request for a side of extra peanut sauce. The pizza itself was very good, but my one point of improvement is that the texture of the chicken was a little dry, almost as if it had been formerly frozen. Overall, it seems like people in Girdwood have a lot of fun hanging out here, grabbing a bite, watching sports, and playing pool. It almost gives off the energy of a third space. read more

I'm extremely disappointed to have to take a full 2 stars off my review, but after our visit today, my opinion of Chair 5 is notably diminished. First thing we noticed - the menus. Different items on the slimmed down menu. No fun little amusing paragraph at the beginning. What's going on here? We ordered, i asked for orange juice with no ice, and mussels from the appetizer menu, with a side of fries, husband got the all meat pizza with added olives. I am given - of course I am given - orange juice with ice. I fished it out with my fork, and threw it in my water glass. Even so, it already tasted watery and not proper orange juice tangy. When the server came with the food, my husband asked if the owner had sold the place. The server said yes, and that it was now owned by the same person that owns The Inn at Whittier, and BaseCamp. Having had a dreadful dinner in the Inn At Whittier, when i visited as a tourist in 2010, it made my heart sink a little. That's awful because the Inn At Whittier is beautifully located, but the dinner we had was - and i would rarely use this word in conjunction with any restaurant - tasteless and bland. So it was with trepidation that i began to eat my dinner. I was embarrassed for the server having to take away our plates, with food that we had barely touched. However, these were big, juicy, plump delicious mussels, in a fairly tasty, well seasoned broth, but i feel it necessary to criticize on a couple of issues. I was not given a bowl in which to put my empty shells. I wasn't given the correct silverware to eat the mussels. I wasn't given either a spoon to eat the broth, or bread to dip into it, and the bowl was so wide, that to have tipped it up to drink it, would have been hideously messy. But that's what i did, in order to give the broth a fair review. In addition 4 or 5 mussels were unopened, and 2 were broken - everyone knows not to eat those, so i feel that they should have been removed from the plate prior to serving, and replaced with fully open mussels. Fully opened mussels, a few pieces of French bread, a spoon and an empty bowl for spent shells would have increased my rating. The fries seem different. I think they're a different type than the previous owner used. I don't have an issue with them, they tasted fine. Not amazing, just fine. Elevated by the Jalapeno House sauce i always get on the side. My husband had nothing good to say about his pizza, and was quite grumpy about it, he only ate half, and didn't even bother taking the rest home which he usually did in the past. One of the meats was a type of beef, he said it tasted like taco beef, and he objected to the crust, he said it was not quite as cooked as he liked. I asked him to show me underneath, and it didn't look raw, but neither did it look golden and toasty either. When i probed him what was wrong with it, he couldn't put his finger on it, and just said "It's different, not as good as it was" What can i say? He's picky about his pizza. Dang I am going to miss my Coconut Shrimp Salad, Cheesy Fries, Spinach and Artichoke Dip - these were all solid core menu items that you could rely on being of consistent quality. The new menu seems quite seafood-centric, and there's calamari, crab, halibut all featured. I hope i find a new dish to love, when we go back. read more

This restaurant is always busy and packed! And for good reason. Expect a possible long wait for a table. The staff were great and did the best they possibly could do, but they are doing a LOT. So be patient. Once we got sat at our table, our server was quick to assist us and get our orders started. The food even came out much faster than I expected. So, this has been a stop for us when coming or going to Anchorage for a quarter century now. And we stopped there once again a few weeks ago,. The food has always been good. On this last visit we got some wings and a deep-dish pizza. Both were cooked well, although the wings were a little small. I realize they sell them by weight, not by the number of wings, but a larger grade makes a better wing. Still, they were cooked and sauced well and we enjoyed them and our pizza. What we did not enjoy was having to listen to the staff's loud conversation for literally our entire visit. I don't care when your vacation is, who is covering for you while you are gone, what music festival you are going to, how much you had to drink last night, etc. Put some music on or go talk in the back, or .... just anything but a full-volume conversation at the bar about how great you are. If you are so very important to the business, why were you able to stand around talking about yourself for a full forty-five minutes, nonstop, at top volume? It just feels disrespectful to your guests. I was there to have lunch with my wife, not to listen to some twenty-something bartender rambling on and on and on about his life and the schedule at the restaurant. Do better, Chair 5. read more
