The best part of our experience was sitting outside looking at the mountains, and parking lot, as we ate our pancakes. 2.75 stars... this place has been around for what seems like eternity. It's one of very few dine-in breakfasts spots open in Girdwood. Very small interior, you immediately get the competitive instinct to race for an empty table, should one become available. There were a couple small seats outside, but if it's snowing or raining, they wouldn't work. Pros: I love the unlimited soup option, you can keep getting your soup refilled as many times as you want till you're full, for about $10. I also love their sourdough pancakes, it really gives you a taste of Alaska. I also love their freshly baked items like the thick hearty toast and gigantic cinnamon buns. Cons: all the condiments (maple syrup, Tabasco, etc) are on the tables already, and are not being wiped down for bacteria, between customers. Also, food does not come out together, even if it was ordered at the same time. Atmosphere is quite loud, and as I said before, securing a place to sit can be a challenge. Staff was friendly enough to us on our recent visit, no complaints there. Conclusion: basic bakery-cafeteria vibes, fresh soup is a bonus, as well as fresh baked items, however it is no frills, and hard to find seating. I prefer Jack Sprat, a near-by restaurant, over this one. read more

I had a fan-freaking-tasting Reuben sando here not long ago. It came out HOT and smothered in Thousand Island, and tasted so good on a cold, snowy day. The meat was juicy, fresh and very flavorful. I also ordered a side salad which was generously dressed. It paired excellently with the Reuben. I couldn't walk out without trying their famous Sweet Roll. Nothing short of phenomenal. This bad boy is the perfect combo of buttery goodness, flakiness and sweet. The caramel is light, but a little went a long way. Definitely could taste the anise. Topped with a soft, lemony glaze (not very tangy) and sliced almonds, it's no wonder this treat is so well known. 10/10 would drop in again. read more

You ever been to a place that feels like people who are growing up in the town work there? It's hard to describe the energy but it's pleasantly relaxing, even when crowded. I'd suggest getting there early-is as we entered into a line and walked past a line on the way out. It's THAT popular. There's a reason for that: the food is consistent. Everyone's toast came out perfectly, the bacon was cooked fresh, the eggs were fluffy, and the drinks were good.  Recommendation: Cinnamon bun. Oh. My. Gosh. Not too sweet, crunchy on the top and so delicately light and soft inside. That was the highlight of breakfast, aside from peripherally observing the kitchen staff jamming out to 90s/2000s punk/skater rock and curse at a few fringe toasts.  Sure, if you're a person of color you may get some side glances but it won't be from staff. My husband likes to come here more than I do. It's a small cafe, with an expensive menu. $15 for a BLT that does not come with a side? It's very busy here, and there's ALWAYS a line. However the interior is interesting enough to look at, with local art on the walls, that it makes the wait seem less dreary. So you order at the front, and go find a table, if you can. Today, a friend of mine was in there, and just getting ready to leave so he told me to grab his table, otherwise we'd have to wait till someone else's cleared. I ordered the BLT, husband ordered the bowl of chili and buttered roll. His chili came out very quickly, and i told him to go ahead and eat, because it takes them forever to make a sandwich, and i didn't want his to go cold, whilst he waited for me. I find it ludicrous that they don't serve both parties at the same time. If my sandwich is not ready yet, then hold his chili, till you can bring both meals at once. I am feeling extremely hostile about that, because that's not how it's supposed to work. He had almost finished his chili by the time my sandwich arrived. Now, the bacon was not warm, the toasted bread was also cold. And i don't actually like a BLT made with toast, i prefer it with untoasted bread. This toast had sat around, because it had gone very tough, and the inside of my mouth and inner gums in multiple places is scraped from the sharpness of this toast. I never thought i would say such a thing, did not realise you could cut your mouth on tough toast, but there it is. Like seriously, the length of time i waited, and when it comes, it's cold and tough. I'm actually not very happy to pay fifteen bucks for a disappointing sandwich, and to have my mouth cut, and i told my husband that i won't be coming back here for lunch again. Additionally, he couldn't hear me when we were trying to chat, it is SUPER loud in here. I left the last quarter of my weaponized sandwich, and couldn't wait to be out of there. On the plus side, the sweet roll with butter for $7 is enormous, delicious, and enough for 3 people to share, and goes lovely with a hot drink. read more

One of the few real breakfast spots in Girdwood, which makes it hard to beat. It has a cozy cafe feeling with a deli style order-at-the-counter-and-grab-your-own-table. The little bit of service that you encounter when ordering was pleasant. The ham and cheese omelette was cheesy, gooey, goodness. The sourdough pancakes were the perfect combination of chewy yet tender. The blueberry jam was delicious on the toast and pancakes. OJ wasn't watery and hit the spot. Overall feels like you can't go wrong here although after multiple days you kind of run out of options. They only have one high chair, I think two would be better, but it's nice that the family is pretty family friendly. Would recommend and would come again. read more

Soup Natzis! We ordered 2 sandwiches, a soup, (they advertise it to be unlimited) and a coffee drink. I wasn't hungry initially but then my husband offered me some soup, so I took some. I went and asked for a spoon and was never told there is no sharing. When my husband went up to ask for his 2nd bowl of "unlimited" soup, the manager refused bc I had some bites. He said "no sharing"- this means they are spying on the bites you take! There are no signs stating this and when I asked for a spoon, they didn't say anything. I suggested he give us soup to go so my husband could finish his lunch and the manager refused. HORRIBLE service. If they are going to police people's bodies and eating, state it up front on signs and have the cashier tell people this. Btw/ the soup and sandwiches I tried were mediocre. read more

My husband and I planned on getting the whole breakfast shebang here due to the rave reviews. When entered the cafe, it was empty. The skinny young lady in the front was incredibly rude and tapped her fingers on the counter letting us know to hurry up and order. Mind you, this is our first time here. I immediately looked at my husband and said, "No thanks!" Young lady, you may treat tourists badly but know that they help pay your bills. We ate here after visiting the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. It's about 20 minutes away from there, in the town of Girdwood. I was pleasantly surprised to find a little ski town with a cute bake shop in the middle. We ordered the grilled cheese w vegetarian soup (northern bean), grilled turkey and cheese w clam chowder, and a chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was fresh but just okay tasting. It wasn't too special. The soups were delicious. The grilled turkey and cheese was delicious but a bit dry. Perhaps would have done better with Mayo. I liked that they served pickles on the side though. Overall, the food was decent, prices were good for Alaska (we paid less than $30), and the place was cute. I've lived in Alaska for 15 years now, and I don't understand the lower reviews on here. The Bake Shop remains my favorite breakfast place in the Anchorage area--even though it's actually about 45 minutes south, it's sometimes worth the drive just for breakfast! It's unique: not IHOP or Dennys. The bread, rolls, coffee are all amazing, but then, so are the pancakes, potatoes, bacon, and other breakfast items. It is certainly sometimes crowded, and there's sometimes a bit of a line or a challenge finding a place to sit, but with scenery like Girdwood's, sitting outside is a blessing, not a curse! read more

I give the Bake Shop a 3.5. For Girdwood it is pretty unassuming, and there are better places to dine. If you are going in for a quick bite, or a specific baked good this is the place to go. Their menu is fairly limited. Everything is pretty standard fare--there is nothing really special about the menu. It is a good place if you want a quick, no frills, simple breakfast or lunch. They bake their breads in house, which are really tasty. They serve bottomless soup, which is a plus. I enjoyed their sandwiches for lunch though I thought they were a bit pricey. They were a good sized portion! What they're famous for is their sweet roll, which is like a cinnamon roll, but definitely not as sweet. The sweet roll is tasty, and served with a big heap of butter. The only thing that bothers me about this item is that they don't warm it up. This is a type of place where you order at the counter, and they call you up to get your food. They do accept credit cards now; they were previously a cash only establishment. There is indoor and outdoor seating, but it is limited. Overall, if you are looking for a basic breakfast or lunch place in Girdwood--The Bake Shop is worth a stop! read more

BEST BREAKFAST IN GIRDWOOD! We are staying at the Alyeska Resort and hate that it took us a few days to find The Bake Shop. Baked goods, omelette, sourdough pancakes and more. We both got a 2 eggs-2 slices of bacon-2 pieces of toast breakfast with coffees and split a side of potatoes and onions. What a gem in a small town. You walk in to The Bake Shop to the aroma of fresh baking bread, and sweetness from the sweet rolls. The staff welcomes you you with a cheerful hello and a great big smile. This place is what a small town bakery/cafe is all about. We had the 76 which was great, sour dough pancakes, 1 piece of bacon and 2 eggs. The pancakes were tasty, the bacon was salty. The eggs were cooked perfect to being ordered. We also got a sweet roll, did I mention I took more than half back to the hotel with me?? It's as big as your face. Warn, moist and flaky. They serve it when enough butter to kill you. I have no photos. Because when my plate came out I was so hungry I ate everything before even thinking about it. The food was very good the ambience was very nice. To update some older reviews they do except and receive all cards and even Apple Pay. Which made me very happy. We bought a loaf of sourdough to go and enjoy it for the week to follow. At five dollars you cannot beat that price for good sourdough. And it was amazing sourdough. I have only had breakfast here but would imagine everything else is delicious. It's hard to mess up breakfast but trust me people do. This place didn't they delivered on exactly what they said they were going to with their menu items. Typically when I order pancakes I always want to add an extra egg or side I am happy that I didn't with my order today. As the pancakes were very filling after I slapped a nice portion of the jellies on the table on them. Whether you're getting ready to ski the mountain or climb a mountain. When I was a kid we would stop here on our way to the family cabin for dinner. I'd get the BLT every time. Today I got a cup of chili with a grilled cheese. Both were awesome. Chili was just like my mom makes it. The grilled cheese wasn't too greasy and had tons of stringy cheddar 3(cheese choices) on sourdough. THEY TAKE CARD NOW btw, even Apple Pay. I've been here twice. The sourdough pancakes and cinnamon rolls are great. The coffee is good, but to be fair I'm a bit biased coming from Seattle. Not much in regard to service but everyone is kind. The place is a cafeteria setting with limited seating compared to the quantity of customers. At times, your food may be ready while you have no place to sit. Overall, I would keep coming here for the food when passing through, but the seating situation could use help. read more

We've been here 3 times in the past 4 days, and we haven't even been staying in Girdwood most of that time. The sourdough pancakes are so deliciously sour and sweet and perfect. Then we came back for lunch and confirmed that this place is legit. Got a Reuben and a veggie and cheese sandwich and both were very flavorful and delicious.
