The Durham Arts Council is much more then just a building located around the corner from Pizzeria Toro [one of the most well-known spots in recent years to locals and tourists like]. They do manage the Durham Arts Council Building, but it is actually a city owned, multi-purpose community arts center in downtown Durham. The DAC itself is a non-profit that's aim is to promote excellence and access to the creation, experience and active support of the arts for the community. They provides services, programs and support for tons of arts organizations as well as individual artists. They also operate The Clay Studio, a studio facility located at Northgate Mall, produce CenterFest (a LARGE annual street arts festival every September in Durham), and the Edible Arts Festival of Food & Art each June. The galleries in the Durham Arts Council change every month and they've had some beautiful exhibits pass through. The building itself is lovely, a two story, large windows, glass walls interior, which houses special events [including Durham's Third Friday] and even weddings. Four FREE galleries comprise the space: the Allenton Gallery and the SunTrust Bank Galleries occupied by the Durham Art Guild (both on the first floor) and the Semans Gallery and the Ella Fountain Pratt Legacy Gallery (both on the second floor). Put this on your Third Friday list, I recommend STARTING here [they are only open 5-7pm for the festivities] and with the Durham Art Guild hosting a reception during Third Friday each month, it's a great time of art + wine/finger foods.

Located in the Golden Belt warehouse district, Liberty Arts has a small gallery inside their warehouse, in addition to the large co-working area. This gallery is open to the public on the last Thursday of every month as well as more recently for Durham's Third Friday. During this time, visitors have the chance to view a vastly varied set of media [incredible woodwork, bronze casting, blown glass and even handcrafted pipes!] but also chat with artists and explore the studio. The co-working space also offers community classes, and although pricey, they have the ability to offer some very unique opportunities. Everything from jack-o-lantern casting and carving, welding education, plasma cutting and metalworking, clay-metal fusion and bronze casting. I highly recommend checking out their website for current events! You can tell that the artists truly look forward to chatting with interested visitors. So, stop by, ask questions or just soak up the creative atmosphere!

So when I am in a new area of a town, I google "art supplies" and pray for some relief from the tyranny of plastic and cake decorating, scrapbook paper and seasonal driftwood. If you are an artist or craftsperson, I don't believe you will be able to leave without something. p.s. they have some of the coolest japanese brush tip pens.

I also observed a class with younger children and the teacher was patient and also encouraging of creativity with the kids. They also host some really great outdoor markets on the weekend where you can find lots of great local art and music!

I like to just think of them as the same thing and am still a little unsure of what the main differences are between the two. Both reside at the same physical location, although they have separate websites and galleries within the building. If anyone can spread light on this conundrum I will take it gladly, but simply put I THINK the DAC is the building at 120 Morris St and the DAG is an organization residing there; but let me tell you what I DO know about the DAG [Durham Art Guild]. The DAG is a nonprofit member-driven visual arts organization that was established back in 1948 (making it one of the oldest community visual arts organizations in NC, and one of the five oldest in the nation). Their mission is to enrich and connect communities by creating opportunities for and providing leadership and future visual artists and art enthusiasts. Membership levels range from $30 (full-time student) to $1,000 (director's circle). The DAG operates two public galleries: the SunTrust Gallery (in the Durham Arts Council Building and open 5-7pm during the Third Friday art walk) and Room 100 at The Golden Belt (open 6-9pm on Durham's Third Friday art walk). Both galleries are free and open to the public as well as hosts a public reception for the artists exhibiting in this space on Third Friday's with a lovely reception with wine and finger snacks.
