Gym or Dunk Donuts? Gym or Dunk Donuts? Those were my two options to do after Max woke up from his nap...well...I think it's pretty obvious what won. Fatty. Anyways..I TOTALLY almost passed this place up while driving down Lake St.! The front and inside are both pretty dingy and old school, but don't let that deter you! The two Asian women behind the counter were SUPER friendly (almost looked like a mom and daughter) and kept talking to my kids which doesn't always happen. Awww... So I told her I would get a half dozen since it is cash only and I had a whopping $7 on me. I ordered a couple buttermilk, chocolate cake, vanilla long john, jelly and a french crueller. Well...she didn't stop there...she threw in two extra doughnuts and a muffin. All for the price of the doughnuts which was $5.15 with tax. So I just gave her all the $7 while she said goodbye to my sons for like 2 minutes...so.cute. AND so generous...I mean she didn't have to do that! Now to the doughnuts. I tried the chocolate, crueller and the buttermilk and ALL of them are delicious!!! The buttermilk and crueller are my favorites! The buttermilk is greasy-crunchy, in a good way, on the outside with a light glaze and soft on the inside with a sweet, salty and slightly almond-y flavor. Perfection! And the crueller was SO soft and egg-y, just how I like my cruellers. I will def be back and recommend that everyone get their fat ass over there and pick up a dozen...you're hips and ass will thank you! =] read more

I discovered these donuts 17 years ago, but it's been around much longer. I started going here with my husband when we started dating and haven't stopped. An important part of our marriage now, lol. CraY, but it still taste the same 17 years later. I've tried every donuts over the years and they all are great! Must have for historic and taste reasons when back in the area. When I was a 6, I was prescribed ocular therapy (aka eye exercises). I had to visit my eye doctor twice a week for what seemed like an eternity (being a child, I'm guessing it was more like 6 months). The one bright spot was that my mom, probably bored while waiting on me, discovered Dunk Donuts around the corner and would pick up doughnut holes and other goodies as a post-therapy treat. Many moons later, I still see the same eye doctor (he's since moved) and we still make the trip to enjoy Dunk. I'm not sure I enjoyed the fritters back in my formative years; I like to think if I had, I would have remembered them. When David R., a fellow fritter fiend, praised the them, I knew I had to make a visit to Dunk Donuts. Not wanting to waste a trip, I called ahead and asked them to hold one aside for me (I found out my mom has been doing this pro trip for quite some time). I also decided to get into the holiday spirit and get a dozen doughnuts for my coworkers. The manfriend and I split the fritter; they are quite large. I knew I could eat the whole thing on my own, but in the throes of the holiday season, I thought it might be good to practice a little restraint. (And that it might be nice to share with him instead of keep all of the appley goodness for myself.) Prior to Dunk, our favorite apple fritter was Glazed & Infused; now, I qualify G&I as my favorite city fritter. When you bite into the fritter, you can see the layer of apple and cinnamon woven throughout. The fritters keep well; we weren't able to enjoy ours until that evening and it was still quite excellent. I can only imagine what they're like fresh from the oven. The doughnuts I brought to work were pretty good too, my coworkers devoured them in minutes. Personally, they don't hold a candle to the fritter. I didn't order them this time, but I think the doughnut holes are still my second favorite menu item there. Dunk Doughnuts is a true gem and the prices are great too. I walked out with a dozen doughnuts and a fritter for under $15 (fritters will only run you $2 - such a steal). read more

Good apple fritter, great customer service. Melrose Park is pretty far out of my way, but as a fiend for apple fritters, I found the opportunity to swing by one Saturday morning to try Dunk's version. Heartbreakingly, they were out of apple fritters! At 9:30am. The clerk told me that sometimes a customer comes in and buys the whole stock. I want to track this guy down and stuff one of those doughnuts in his tailpipe. What an a-hole. She mentioned that next time I could call ahead and ask them to put one aside for me. So on my next suburban road trip morning, I did just that. At 6am, they had six fritters left, and without my prompting, the clerk offered to set one aside. I swung by the shop around 9, and there it was, waiting for me, like an date with whom I'd been chatting online but was meeting in person for the first time. There was so much expectancy, a pulse-quickening anticipation. Would our encounter live up to the halting dance that had preceded it? We already knew so much about each other, but would there be chemistry? Well, it wasn't a '10' but I think that with a few tweaks it could be. The fritter is very sugary; other customers might like this, but to hit my, um, sweet spot, they could reduce the glaze by about 20%. It is generously sized, about six inches in diameter. It is also somewhat thinner than most other versions, which makes the edges quite crispy (a-ok with me) while the center manages to remain very, very moist. That takes a lot of skill, so kudos for that. There are plenty of apple bits and the overall flavor is very nice. There isn't much cinnamon, but I detected something which seemed like amaretto. Is that possible? If so, it's a pretty genius idea, although in this case it was a little too much. I think that they could tone down the glaze and the amaretto just slightly, and they would have a perfect apple fritter--marriage material. Although I couldn't seriously date a fritter that lived so far out in the suburbs. I tried a couple of other doughnuts which were a-okay; in particular the chocolate cake with chocolate icing and coconut is really good, not as rich as it sounds but just right. All three of the girls that I dealt with on both occasions were sweet as can be, just like the fritters. Big thumbs up for the customer service here. They seem to have a steady stream of regulars, and I would certainly be one if this shop were in my neighborhood. read more

3.5 stars. I get why Dunk Donuts is popular. Friendly service, good donuts. Let dive into the details, shall we? The cake donuts had a good crust on them. The moisture was good, and sweetness was on the higher side. Good flavor, though. The yeast donuts were light, airy, and fluffy. Sweetness about the same as the cake donuts. The frostings were fairly smooth and applied generously. They combined well with the sweetness of the donut. Flavors were about par for what you'd expect; nothing to create a sensation. The glazes were a little overpowering for the yeast donuts and made them a little soft (the krueler especially was a the mushy, sugary sensation you get at many places.) The service was friendly and helpful. The genuine smiles went a long way. =) Overall, decent, but not quite to my personal palette. read more

I wish I knew the lady's name that helped my son and I today. I had never visited this establishment before but I was craving donuts today. My youngest son and I went there on a whim. We ordered two long johns. I wasn't aware they only accepted cash, so I thanked them and was getting ready to leave. The lady was so kind and gave us the two donuts for free. Miniature donut shop, packed full of some over the counter convenience store items, like Tylenol, chewing gums, cold medicine, four fridges full of beverages and a small kitchen area for the creation of breakfast sandwiches and donut baking (?). There's a counter overlooking the griddle with bar stool seating for up to five, that can sit and enjoy their food. The donuts are better than average, but nothing to yell to the world about. Driving around with Oogie S., I was looking through Yelp reviews on my phone for anything close to the terms of "great food" which brought me to reviews for this donut shop. It's probably around 10ish pm, called over and a young lady replied they were open till midnight. Since it was the end of the night they only had a few trays of random goodies, sweet croissants and fruit stuffed tarts. The selection looked bleak. Mostly donuts with coconut toppings, fresh coconut and toasted. Some chocolate covered with peanuts or almond shavings. Think a circular donut but with almost no hole in the center. The batter is old fashioned, to me it tasted close to the recipe of Entenmann's classic donut or original donut holes from Dunkin Donuts. If you go, you may like to try it fresh from the oven, so an AM trip would be best. When we first entered Oogie says to the ladies, " I hear you guys have bangin' donuts here" The ladies looked at each other and then made a face of disbelief. Oogie loved that he could buy a pack of cigarettes, bangin coffee and donuts in the same place. Four donuts, a pack of cigs and a coffee cost just under $13 dollars, which isn't bad since smokes are around ten dollars. This place was spectacular! Super fresh. Very patient. And FAST! I tried a plethora of items including the cheese croissant, buttermilk, glaze, blueberry, pecan & cinnamon roll. OMG!! The cinnamon roll was hands down my favorite but the buttermilk was a close second. One thing to note is this establishment does not accept credit cards (at the moment of this review anyway). But it was totally worth the trip to the ATM at the nearest gas station. Do yourself a few favors: 1. Get here ASAP!! 2. Bring your appetite 3. Bring a stash of cash! An absolutely AWESOME place for some great donuts and some very underrated coffee!!! The donuts are fresh and they have some really interesting flavors of donuts!! I am a huge fan of the classics...either an old fashioned or a chocolate donut with a large black cup of coffee!!! The staff is always really pleasant and you can tell the donuts are baked fresh. I LOVE when I find independent donut shops - but they are as hard to find as a needle in a haystack - because I am sick of Dunkin Donuts, and the stale, tasteless donuts they serve. It has been many years (1995) since I have been in the Chicago area and I must say I missed the donuts at Dunk. I did not know how much I missed them. I now an staying in Portage Park have a friend who lives in Niles who also loves quality donuts so I drive from Portage Park to Niles then to Melrose Park to get the wonderful light and fluffy treats. You have to understand that I am truly a city girl - A Chicago City Girl. My car is the CTA. I can barely tell you where Evanston is. If you ask me where Oakbrook is - an educated guess would be somewhere in Indiana. When a friend offered to take me to one of the best donut places in the Chicagoland area, I figure we would be heading over to someplace just outside of Wrigleyville......so, 45 minutes on the freeway later, we end up at Dunk Donuts in Melrose Park (never knew there was a place called Melrose Park) I never judge a book by it's cover, so I was eager to go in and try....... How can these fluffy, soft, delicious spherical things be SO tasty? Too many great choices, so I decided to go nuts and had the nice lady behind the counter fill me up a box of glazed donuts, chocolate frosted donuts, French cruller, Boston cream filled thingy, Pina Colada muffin, cheese danishes, and more.......Truly some of the best tasting American pastries EVER! The flavors were distinctly different from the "commercialized" donuts we all are familiar with. I don't think that I can ever go back to the other guys. Dunk Donuts makes the others taste like drywall. ICK! Today broke, cold and gray. Rain only made everyone I passed huddle deeper into their coats. The few days of sun from last week are already long forgotten, and once again I entertain the possibility that somehow I moved to Cleveland without realizing it. I am living a Tom Waits song... ...and then I went to Dunk Donuts before getting to the office. It is *NOT* coincidence that it warmed up 10 degrees and the sun came out by lunchtime. The pure heavenlies I picked up had to be the culprits. I almost feel guilty trying to 'review' the 2 dozen donuts I picked up today: after all, I only ate three of them so I clearly need to go back and pound a few of the varieties that I hadn't previously sampled, right? The apple fritter here is among the best I've ever had, and I've had MANY. The old fashioned was soft as warm butter, and far tastier (and this comes from someone whose love of butter makes him half-french). The co-worker who attacked the Long John expounded to me on how surprised he was at the perfect texture. EVERYONE looked at the raised donuts with cherry or lemon filling and glanced around wondering who would pounce first. There were some bagels in the display case, and I got a blueberry muffin in case some truly insane individual didn't want a donut, but Lord knows I couldn't tell you how they were - I was too busy calculating how many extra miles equals a cruller. I will absolutely be returning to this tiny shop with no parking - it sells phenomenal donuts at super cheap prices: what more could you ask for? read more
