    Italian sub
    David M.

Small family owned Italian bakery. They were very welcoming and friendly when I came it. They have a small but perfect menu to meet your needs there prices are very reasonable. I had an Italian sub for $5 and it was made fresh. The bread was fresh and had that perfect crunch. The meat was perfect, but I wish there was more flavor. They have a lot of different breads and homemade dishes for available also. Im looking forward to going back to my new found favorite spot in the neighborhood.

Best cannoli I've ever had! Filled when you order them.. the absolute smoothest filling! Kolaches are supremely delicious!! highly recommend!

I drive by this bakery on my way to work sometimes and decided to stop by to try some of their offerings. I got a chicken foccacini(?), meatball foccacini, frozen eggplant parm, loaf of italian bread, chocolate cannoli, kolache and rainbow cookies. So the frozen eggplant parmesan was very good. It reheated nicely, was very flavorful and a nice sized portion. The bread was light and airy with a thin crisp crust. The freshly filled cannoli was good. The rainbow cookie was also good, but I could tell it was getting a little stale/dry. The foccacini was not great. There was a large piece of chicken breast in the chicken foccacini, not a bad thing. It was a good price and very filling. However, the meatball foccacini seemed too soft or underdone. Maybe I'm not used to their meatballs, but it was so soft that I thought it wasn't cooked thoroughly. I microwaved it to nuke it, but it still stayed that undercooked-like texture. Maybe too much filler? It was off putting. Also the kolache dough was also undercooked. The dough at the bottom was very thick and puddy-like. I will stay away from those in the future. I read so many good things about this bakery, so I'm willing to give other items a try. And the bakery owner was sooo friendly and sweet, I have to go back!

This was a great stop off my usual beating path. As I zipped by on Cermak the awning caught my eye. CANNOLIS.... Bread ect. But my attention was already won. You don't put Cannoli on the awning if you cant throw down in that arena. Instantly I risked my life on a U-ey to get back to the parking lot. Although they are off a bit from a neighborhood, that didn't diminish the feel Pina gave me that this place is about family and friends. I perused the shop while she finished up with what surly sounded like a regular. She filled my box with an assortment that suited the moment. They were all excellent and deserve praise. But this was a Cannoli run! The tap test: taking a fork and tapping the lightly bubbled shell. She sounded solid and full without an echo. The pistachio tap caused no failure of the nut positions. A++ The push: because the shell was fresh with perfect conformation I pressed into the mid area with the fork saddle..SNAP..CRACK. What a glorious sound. As i rested the fork I couldn't help the excitement I was feeling as that sweet smell of the crust and a puff of powdered sugar transcended to my sniffers. The smooth operator: you know that rhythmic cadence you get while riding the "L" du-dun du-dun; du-dun du-dun" over and over. That filling must have endured rhythms of a dozen Howard to 95 legs. I have not had smoother, the ratios were spot on and the opposition of crunch and sweet was endearing. Satisfaction: restaurants to me are about the people and the palate. Pina assured me that for my Italy trip I could not go wrong with the Amalfi Coast this summer. I can't wait to compare the Toscano/Ritacca masterpiece to the motherlands As an out of towner I will return! Enjoy LK

I'm really happy that places like this still exist because I believe it's it's still important to have small businesses, and I also think this is a way to have true authenticity in regards to how traditional Italian food should be made. Located in the western suburbs of Chicago, this is like stepping back in time when you walk through the doors. You are surrounded by so many delicious choices, it's hard just to pick one thing! Lots of traditional desserts, good deli options, and sandwiches don't go in here hungry! The owners which I suspect are husband and wife, are very helpful, and are willing to answer any questions you might have. On top of food, you can also pick out t-shirts, stickers or expresso sets. I recommend this place to anyone who grew up with old-school Italian food, or just want to try something new authentic and delicious

It was ok. Liked the old shop charm, yet did not care for the baked goods selection. We tried an assortment of cookies and a few cannoli.

I tried an onion, everything, and jalapeño cheddar and I loved all three. I highly recommend any of the breakfast bagel sandwiches. My boyfriend got the Avocado Turkey breakfast sandwich (not shown) and I got the Lox breakfast sandwich. The sandwiches are actually filled with food rather than just a few thin slices. My boyfriend and I split the liver plate and it was amazing. I find it hard to find great liver and this place has some! If you like liverwurst you will like this plate. We got it with an onion bagel. We got bagel chips while we waited and sipped on coffee and looking back I wish I grabbed a few extra bagels to go to try more of the variety they had since the assorted chips were so good. The staff was amazing; being warm and welcoming like we had been going there for years. The interior was beautiful and made you feel at home. This is one of those hidden gems anyone around the Chicago area should try, whether you live here or you're just stopping by.

I came in about 30 minutes before they closed so I had the restaurant almost to myself. I had their patty melt which is something I don't normally order. The patty melt was not overly greasy and passable. Their meat patty was surprisingly thinner than expected. Their fries were flavorless and needed seasoning or some special sauce alternative to ketchup. I thought prices were a bit on the high side for what was served. Overall, I am guessing that their breakfast and deli counter may be more popular than their lunches. My experience at Onion Roll, though, was nothing extraordinary or special but considered a local convenience.

I got the Italian sub, it came with mortadella, hot capicola, Genoa salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil, and vinegar on Italian bread. First bite, I was like yes... this is it. The flavor just hits right, salty, tangy, and a little spicy from the capicola. Bread had that perfect chew, not too soft, not rock hard. Maybe could've been a little toastier but that's just me, but honestly, it was solid. We also got the Turkey Cobb. Roasted turkey, blue cheese, and applewood smoked bacon on thick sourdough with avocado. That one was so good. The blue cheese really stood out, packed a flavorful punch that tied it all together. Portions were generous too, I didn't even finish it all in one go. I'd definitely come back and try the other sandwiches.

The guy running the place looked young but was super friendly and seemed genuinely passionate about the deli. He told me they make their meats and soups in store. It was a cold day so I opted for a small size of each of their soils that day- chicken noodle, cream of chicken, and roasted stuffed peppers. Everyone in the family had a taste of each and we all had different favorites so I will conclude that regardless of what you get, you will enjoy it! My husband also had their chicken pesto panini while I split a ham and swim with my son. Good flavors and fresh ingredients. Also excellent proportions. We will definitely be back!

3.5 stars, but rounded up because I didn't feel they deserved any deduction…read more I was REALLY looking forward to their #20 Old New Yorker, which I got in their Navel Cut pastrami. It was a solid 7, which is why I place it at 3.5 stars. I may be being picky here but it just wasn't to the level of "melt-in-your-mouth" pastrami standards for me. Not to say it wasn't good, because it was perfectly fine. In fact, it's better than most of the pastrami sandwiches I tried in Chicagoland. Maybe it's the fact that I had to bring it back to the office to eat it, and half hour had gone by and pastrami weren't as warm and the Jewish rye had become soggy by the time I took the first bite. I mean, it goes without saying that the sandwich would have been 3 times better had I sat down immediately and had it. Again, all things considered, it was a perfectly good sandwich. One interesting thing was that I had never been to an establishment that included a half sour pickle instead of a normal one and gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised. Pickles can be a hit or a miss for me. I like my pickles to be crunch, but some places offer overripened ones that become borderline mushy. Schmaltz's half sour pickle was not overly salty or sour, making it very attractive for me. The more I'm thinking about it, I'm convinced that I'll have to go back and try their #14 Sloppy Paul, which is the corned beef with sauerkraut, which is another favorite of mine. And this time, I'll be sure to dine in and give another review of it to see how much I like them better.
