My favorite grocery store bread! Here at the bakery, you'll find their restaurant "free range" fresh baked bread mostly for under $5 a loaf. There isn't any where to sit, so expect to pickup. There are cookies, cakes, pizza bread and coffee cake. The sweets were just okay for me. Hummingbird and carrot cake had a weird after tasting I did not like. Napoleon, my favorite custard, is good. Prices are fair for the size you get, cakes $2.75/slice $19.99/whole, cheesecake $3.75. There is no parking lot, but street parking is easy enough to find. read more

Desserts are great, coffee is good, most of the bakers are professional, but things has changed since more people has joined there team. So, my experience today on 5/21/26 was different, there were only 2 bakers in the shop today (usually there's about 3 or 4 and I usually get the nice bakers to communicate and checkout with), but this particular day I got a baker by the name of Yanet V. Usually when there are more bakers in the shop, Yanet tries to be professional, if she has to take care of my order, she will approach with her face frowned and try her best to be partially nice, I guess with the other bakers, the communication is great...they listen, make sure I'm satisfied with my order and make sure that the atmosphere is equally yolked. Let's get to the point with Ms. Yanet, I walked into the shop today and Yanet came to the counter to take my order, there were only 2 bakers in the shop today. Yanet asked me what did I want and I told her that I wanted the cookies next to the turtle cookies and I didn't know the name of the cookies, but the cookies was made with coconut and pistachios, the tray was completely full so I didn't know what she was putting in my bag, btw I don't think she was listening to me I think that she wanted me to leave. When she finished my order, I pressed the monitor on the screen to accept a receipt and usually I'm allowed to grab my own receipt from the receipt machine, but Yanet decided to get the receipt from the machine and when she did she just dropped the receipt on the counter, which was rude and walked away without saying anything. So, I just looked, shocked my head in disguise and walked away. When I went to my vehicle and looked in my bag, I noticed that Yanet had put the wrong cookies into the bag and like I said earlier Yanet was not listening to what I said and did not ask me to repeat my order. I went back inside to let Yanet know that she had given me the wrong cookies and she exhaled deeply asif I was getting on her nerves and looked over to the other lady who I believe is a manager, so the other lady walked over quickly as if I was causing confusion and I told the other lady, who I am assuming is a manger and I told her that I come into Turano on the regular and do not deserve to be treated the way that her baker was treating me. I also noticed that once I left the first time, there were two other older patriots who were older latino-white women and Yanet gave them big smiles and greeted them, so I just want to know why I was treated differently than those patriots when I come into the store. The manager felt that she resolved the issue by giving me the cookies I asked for, plus the wrong cookies that Yanet gave me in the bag, but I think Yanet needs to be given customer service skills. Yanet needs to treat every person patronizing Turano. read more

Exceptional creamy goodness. Two distinctively different flavors and both excellent. The pastry shell dipped in chocolate , with a cream filling topped with small chocolate chips. The taste is amazing - and so fresh. The canolli shell has a nice soft sweetness to it and the pistachio flavor adds another layer of deliciousness. Definitely recommend- definitely wish to return! I love to support local my only complaint is the price is getting a bit out of hand. It's a mass produced half of a loaf of rye bread for $6.00. If I still lived in Chicago I would find a local bakery that makes authentic polish or Jewish rye bread. I only bought it because we needed it for a dish we're making and it's the only one in the store that passed the YUKA App. It scored a 72/100 and received a good rating for not having any poison in it cheers to that , all the others scored a bad rating. My mother-in-law lives in the area and sends us their marzipan almond cookies -- Mezzaluna --as a holiday gift. They were sold out of the cheese danish, so I decided to treat myself to carrot cake....only if it had cream cheese frosting. The woman behind the counter assured me it was cream cheese frosting. This is my new favorite bakery in the West Suburbs. They have high quality pastries and superb fresh bread, as well as great customer service. The staff were patient enough to explain different pastries and what was inside them. I really enjoyed their sun-dried tomato focaccia and lobster tail (with french whipped cream inside). I heard that their cannolis are amazing too. There is also a decent selection of small cookies and cakes, with their bread lined up along the back wall. You can tell this place is a local favorite by the amount of people coming in and out. There are only 2 small standing tables inside, so clearly this is built to be more of a carryout bakery. However, it is still nice to enjoy a quick bite and coffee there either by yourself or with 1 other person. Just keep in mind there are no chairs. Will be coming back here whenever I'm craving some Italian pastries or good bread! read more

Back in early February this year, Rosa J. was a professional thrifter, of course on her days off. She made it to the Salvation Army in Oak Park on foot while fighting with that nasty snow, but she noticed "an image of man with a mustache" across the road. At that time she didn't pay much attention to Turano Bakery because she thought that might just be a distribution center. Can someone tell Rosa J. that she was wrong? I found the Yelp business page for Turano Bakery. There's a retail shop open to the public on Roosevelt. I believe the hours on Yelp are slightly off: they are open from 0700 to 1800 (M to F); 0800 to 1700 (Sat.); 0800 to 1400 (Sun.)! I was worried that hubby and I couldn't make it since we came all the way from Albany Park, Chicago to Oak Park by the CTA Blue Line. After we got off at Oak Park station, we proceeded to the exit located on East Ave., and we stayed on East Ave and walked north until we hit Roosevelt. The entire retail shop was rather small; there were two (2) high tables with no chairs if you want to consume your treats onsite. I've visited many bakeries around town, yet I found items I don't normally see at Turano: cranberry pistachio biscotti and baffo (a singular form of "mustache" in Italian, with "baffi" being plural). I picked up these two (2) rare finds, a connoli, and a brownie (hubby spotted it). The tastes were really top-notch. My favorite was the cranberry pistachio biscotti. They were the best companion with a cup of red eye, which was made immediately after I got home via my trusty Keurig. Hubby, on the other hand, enjoyed his brownie. The brownie appeared to be much flatter and "tile-like," instead of being made like a usual "spongy" cubic. Their brownies were "nutty," with a plenty of peanuts in every bite. However, if you don't like nuts or are allergic to them, this kind of brownies might not be your cup of tea. I would have rendered five (5) stars with no doubt for the qualities of bakery items, but I wish there was a cafe dining room so that I could enjoy them while they were fresh. There weren't many benches along Roosevelt in Oak Park. Otherwise, "having a picnic" on the street would be a fun thing to do during the summer time here. read more

I've been here a few times over the years and it is always sooooo hard not to buy too much. My kids love the donuts and sweet rolls. I get kolasky and Italian breads for my husband. There are also fresh cookies, cakes and croissants! The staff members are perhaps the NICEST and most enthusiastic bakery shop workers on the planet. So sweet and attentive!! The shop is spotless. An entire apple strudel, a half pound of cookies, two lobster tails, and a loaf of pumpernickel raisin walnut bread. All for $26. That alone is enough for me to make a regular. Though I can't speak to the quality or taste of the cookies or strudel as they were gifts, the pumpernickel bread has grown to be a family favorite for it's full flavor. Their lobster tails are crunchy and flakey, with a subtley sweet cream filling. I don't enjoy a cloyinging sweet dessert so it was right up my alley. Along with pies and strudels, they also offer a variety of breads, from French to focaccia, and dessert like cannoli, eclairs, and many different cookies. I once saw a slice of cheesecake with the most picturesque strawberry placed delicately at the top of it, I still regret not buying myself a piece. Maybe next time. read more

While the Turano Mamma Susi Bakeshop doesn't have a huge selection, what they do have is high quality and reasonably priced. I find the best times are before the Valentines, St Patricks, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas holidays. The unique cookies and cakes are fantastic. Just be sure you order the Easter Lamb or Thanksgiving Turkey a week or more in advance as they have cutoff dates. A recent taste of the turkey cake was great. Rich cake with a nice filling and covered by marzipan and sugar sheets and molded or colored. If I had to choose just one pastry I'd get the rich fudge frosted eclair. Some people need to eat 1/2 at a sitting but I go for the entire thing. So good. And the eclairs will surely last a few days in the refrigerator so get a few of them. The bread case is always full of the freshest breads. Most just different shapes of the traditional bread but there are a few unique breads available. I've seldom bought a loaf of bread as my focus is on the cakes and pastries. There is also a "day old" rack and the cheap stuff there has always been great. There was a fire in the truck repair building across the street recently (November 2014 - see photos below) but the bakery was undamaged and opened the next day on time. read more

This place has gotten sloppy since the pandemic. The staff always looks like they're pissed you came in and now they have to work. Always a bad attitude. Turano is a great place to work if you want to make money it is very important you don't get supervisors mad at you because in my opinion the company runs on internal conflicts and vendettas if you are white expect prejudice I lived it for 2 years over there but if you want to make money just be quiet don't talk to anyone and do your job read more

I ended up going here because Oak Park bakery wasn't open. I'm so glad I did because this little shop is so charming. They have such an enormous variety of bakery items in addition to their delicious bread. Everyone at my office always loves it when I bring in treats from Turano. They have unique items that you don't find everywhere and they are unbelievably reasonably priced. I highly recommend it if you haven't stopped by. I can always find street parking out front. Whether it's seasonal time, party time, or Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Wednesday, Turano's always comes through with great bread. As fresh as fresh can be and at reasonable prices. My mother has been making the trip there for years, I'm surprised her car doesn't just drive there on its own. She insists on their sliced white Pane when she makes 'eggs in purgatory' but I garlic up their breaksticks when company calls. I also like the fact that they have risen with the times with some nice multigrain options too. And it's not just worth the ride for their bread: you gotta see Mama Susi. Yep, hit the bakery! It is authentic Italian, make no mistake; their cannoli is awesome. And free coffee is always standing by with a low cost purchase. So, if you are the designated someone responsible for bread and rolls for one of the big Holiday meals, you sure don't want to drop the ball. While the Turano Co. is mostly known for it's bread, the bakery here offered much more than just bread. The wife and I came here recently, and the service and quality were excellent. We picked up a beyond delicious cherry and apple coffee cake among the bread and rolls we also purchased. There is only street parking, but that really is the only negative. One cool thing they do is offer free coffee to anyone that makes a purchase of $20 or more. I'll definitely come back. read more
