My husband wanted to get a cake for my bday and asked for there's most popular wad told kinder is the one, Went to get it among with other shopping which I'm not giving review right now about, Only THE cake! I will attach a picture of the cake and want to hear if someone will think this is ok looking cake for a bday??!! Anyway was hoping at least the taste is good, nooooo, it's like eating layers of Play dough, some cookies..... super sweeet.... I stopped by Balkan Bakery on a whim and as soon as I opened the door, the smell hit me, warm, sweet, buttery. Immediate win. It's not just a bakery either. They've got groceries, meats, even liquor. All in one spot. Super convenient, honestly. I ordered a hot chocolate and a pastry. No name on the pastry, which somehow made it more tempting. It didn't look like anything i had before, so I went for it. Sat outside on their little patio and enjoyed the weather. The hot chocolate was creamy, sweet, with just a slight bitterness at the end and top of that some marshmallows, Really good. The pastry was flaky, light, and dipping it into the hot chocolate made it even better. Staff was friendly and helpful while I stood there deciding. Felt easy, not rushed. I'll be back for sure. Probably to try another unnamed pastry. Or two. read more

Having a Balkan Bakery is so unique. It's also a grocery store, so super cool to have unique products to choose from. You can eat outside as they have tables and a tiny garden (even though it's located in a strip mall). Thr menu is vast! Lots of great things to choose from. I tasted the Nutella croissant , hot dog croissant, and the raisin crossaint. I've also tried the beef pie (this was not my fav as the beef tasted low quality, and was exceedingly greasy). However, I loved the rest. I can't wait to of back to try more things!!! read more

What a perfect find in the 'burbs! I was in search for Easter bread and red eggs for an Easter basket for a loved one. Before heading over I called to confirm that they carried tsoureki. I learned that the bakery is Serbian and calls calls it something different However, when it was described as the sweet yeast bread with a red egg in the middle, I knew that found it without having to travel to Greek Town. The person who answered the phone was also nice enough to tell me that they were closing at noon so I made a beeline there to ensure that I had what I needed ahead of Easter brunch. read more

Got a mushroom onion burek and a slice of poppyseed cake. The burek was crispy, and extremely tasty but the poppyseed cake stole the show. I grew up hating this cake but decided to try a bite of this version. OMG! Just perfect with a tasty vanilla poppyseed filling and not too sweet. Coming back next for the crepes. read more

We have been here a few times, their freshly made warm savory pastries are so so good. I had no idea what Balkan food was but man am I sold! We have tried their bureks, potato stuffed, feta stuffed, spinach & feta stuffed, ground beef. I recommend to wrap these in foil in the toaster oven on low 160-200f to reheat them without drying them out. Definitely don't hesitate if you're feeling a warm savory pastry, but beware, these things can feed a whole family, they're huge! read more

The team is always inviting, friendly and informative on what you are getting and fill you in on the other items they have. Very clean space with tons of imported good. Organization is key with as much product they have packed here and I'm sure there is something for everyone to enjoy. Hot tip for those curious living around the area - use Too Good To Go (Warning: pick up times are typically 30 min before close and you gotta cancel your order two hours prior to get a refund from Too Good To Go). read more

I went there about 2 weeks ago and it was the first time in the store. Very disappointed with the quality of the pastry in the store. Everything was grease and the donuts were old and hard. My wife was so upset she almost made to go back and ask for a refund. They advertise all over Facebook and all social media but I would not go back and buy anything from the store. read more

What a neat place! Everything Balkan and their this place is known for their Burek. They have meat, cheese & spinach. The store is full of neat wonders...we came for the burek and left $45 later. I am just getting started with this bakery, but things are looking up. We dropped in the other day - for the first time - and had to try a delight or two. I had a mini-cream puff (mini-eclair) and it was very nice. We did not stay for long but we will be back to try some other items. This bakery is at the far end of a little strip mall just off La Grange Road, and it is hard to find or see from the street - you have to be looking for it. It is basically a Serbian bakery with a few tables inside for seating. They have mostly bakery items, but also a few other ethnic grocery items (like vegeta) for customers. Now this is a smallish kind of bakery and, as such, they can't make every item every day for sale. So sometimes the item you buy will be a day old and not quite as tender a crumb as fresh out of the oven - but that should not hold you back. All the food items are kept in display coolers, and kept ready for sale. This is worth the try. They make a whole array of small cookies and small cakes for delights. The cakes look especially appealing. They also make a meat and/or cheese pastry/cake (if you will) called a burek ... and it is one of the few places you can find that ethnic item. Now that we know where they are and what the layout is, we will be back. read more

Such a gem hidden in a little corner! Went in and tried many different cakes and such. Now, when I say I have high standards for bakery items, I mean it. I want my choux to be fresh and not soggy. I want my cake to be moist and flavorful. Not too much cream. No dry pastries. Just the right amount of crunch when necessary. These guys blew me away! The selection is a bit limited, but they have a number of smoked meats in the fridge, pretty much the bare minimum of your Balkan basic cooking and confection supplies (Vegeta, pasteta, Podravka spices and soups, Napolitanke wafers) and a small rack stocked with newspapers and magazines. The bakery part is where they really shine. Their European-style layer cakes, well, take the cake. I was super impressed with the Baklava and I still have dreams about the rich Jafa Cakes cake. Also, they serve hot Burek in the mornings. I came in the evening and I don't know when I'd have reason to be in La Grange in the AM, but you better believe I'm looking for an excuse. read more

We visited here today, we didn't even realize this was a bakery before today. What a pleasant surpise, it was like walking into a european village market. Wonderful bakery, clean, well organized, fair prices. The selection is awesome. I had the Baklava, and it melts in your mouth. The Kolackys were divine. I'm not Balkan nor could I name all the countries in the region, but I like this place. Mostly a bakery with some dry goods to the side. The kid there was helpful with showing me the lay of the land. Baklava was $1.95, weren't small, and was offered in the classic Greek and Balkan variety where the only difference was that the Greek was in multiple layers and the Balkan had less layers. Also got a crepe for $.98 but don't remember too much regarding the taste since it was consumed when I got home after a night of heavy drinking. I'm not part of the Eastern/Central European target audience for this place, so take that into account when I say I didn't recognize a few items on display. In addition to being a bakery, they have some European pantry items, so it's actually a mini-mart/bakery. The RUM BALLS were terrific. Cupcakes were dry, frosting typical supersweet buttercream, but priced less than half what a cupcake place would charge. Many baked goods from this region are less sweet than I prefer, so I didn't really seek a good sampling. (Not a lot of chocolate on display other than the above, maybe that's why not much spoke to me.) The young man at the counter was very friendly. If you're driving north on La Grange Road, you could blink and miss this place on your right. It's tucked in a strip which does not face the road a couple miles north of the Countryside car dealerships and south of downtown La Grange. I'd go back for those chocolate balls, the rest I'd be trying out of curiosity. In short, a cute little place worth checking out--if only for the chocolate balls. read more

I had a chance to visit this store and found it to be a very nice place for Serbian food items. The cookies and cakes homemade all looked good. We bought several items both bakery and food stuff. The lady owner was very pleasant and answered all of our questions. My in-laws are Serbian and they go here as well. We will definitely return for another visit. read more

So glad that I found this place!! You would never even know it was there unless someone told you about it! It is small and very clean. I've tried many items in the bakery but our favorites are the Baklava (the Balkan variety) and the Burek (I LOVE the meat one and we also love the spinach and feta). It's kind of hard to describe Burek but it is kind of like a buttery pizza made from puff pastry like dough with different fillings (there is a top and a bottom). It is delicious and they sell them by the huge slice. You can eat inside (there are a couple of tables) or take it to go. I would recommend stopping if you are in the area. read more

There are not a lot of Balkan food places around here, so I'm glad that they are so close to my house. They have the best Burek. It's a savory pastry with layers of phyllo dough stuffed with feta cheese. They have a ground beef version. Recently they had a mushroom burek- that was really good too, but I like the meat one the best. They also have different sweets like baklava, rum balls, different cakes and tulumbes (a deep fried dough soaked in syrup, similar to a churro). They sell different packaged goods from the Balkans that you can't find in regular stores around here. The staff are friendly and helpful. read more
