I found this wonderful bakery earlier this year and was thrilled. Finally a bakery that had mini pecan rolls that were not dry! Delicious. Brownies that were tall, almost cake-like but just enough chew to be perfect. Donuts were ok, a bit dry. Coffeecake, fruit Danish and Kolachkies that everyone loves. The past two visits the pecan rolls were so dry it was a huge disappointment. Will not be getting them anymore. The brownies were short and wet. I guess they're trying to go chewy type but it doesn't work. The bottom of the box they came in was so wet after one day. There also is less icing. I'm so sad. I am local. I want to like and frequent this bakery but I am consistently disappointed. Now I am done. I bought two bakery items to take to a local friend's house where we were having coffee together. My friend had the cinnamon roll that had raw tidbits in the middle in more than one location. Kirschbaums has been doing this a long time. I didn't expect raw in the middle. If I thought the possibility of raw existed I would have purchased a few back ups! I had the Bismarck. I asked what the filling was and was told jelly. I expected jelly. (Red raspberry jelly or strawberry jelly)....(this is Kirschbaums). It had a fluorescent goo that you would get in jewel bakery I actually think that red dye is illegal. If it is not illegal it is definitely not "real". read more

Second chance and done, was told this place had Swedish Flop so drove the half hour to check it out, we got there and was told buy the man behind the counter the only serve it on Friday and Saturday so decided to grab a couple dozen doughnuts that were average at best. Today I was gonna grab some pastries and thought it's Friday Swedish Flop day so checked to see the hours it said 7am. So I drive the half hour got there a 6:30 the lights were on as I waited out front when another guy pulls up walks in and gets served at 6:40, oaky sign says Open at 7am but they will serve at 6:30 good to know. I go in and ask for 2 orders of Swedish Flop and was told they don't have it. Very disappointing to Make 2 trips when it's a half hour drive one way, when you were told buy an employee that Friday and Saturday is the day the product is available, and they Don't Have It read more

Love visiting bakeries and this one, which has been here for decades, was well worth the visit. We were out at the LaGrange Farmer's Market and didn't want to go back south on LaGrange because of construction, so we headed west and decided to look for bakeries on the way to I-294. That's how we found this little gem. They had a nice selection of cookies, doughnuts, pastries, and cakes. Mostly the usuals you would expect from a front line bakery, and they carried them off very nicely. The chocolate frosted doughnut was especially good. I thought the almond Danish tasted almond but didn't seem to have much in the way of filling, but sometimes that happens. Nice clean facility, and happy and helpful staff inside. All in all, we will return to sample more of what they have. We had a good first visit, good enough to get us back. read more

Updating a previous review of mine. I thought I'd give Kirchbaum's another try. As mentioned previously, the ONLY thing worth getting are their chocolate frosted donuts. Well, now that is even a strike against Kirchbaum's. Rather than simply adjusting the price of the donuts to reflect inflationary pressure, they have kept the donuts price the same, but made them about half the size. Customers now get a 3 inch donut for the same price of the previous larger donut. This smaller size has also affected the quality... The donut is crisp beer, and significantly drier than the larger donuts that Kirchbaum's used to make. In fact, this drier and sandier texture makes it taste like a two day old doughnut rather than something that was supposedly baked fresh today. read more

Great old school bakery in downtown Western Springs. The place was busy and I walked in a customer advised me to take a number. In a few minutes, I placed my order and was out the door. I had purchased donuts, coffee cakes, cinnamon buns and a cake for a work event. Everyone really enjoyed the sweets and they eat everything leaving no leftovers to take home. Kirschbaum's products are outstandingly delicious. Their petit fours are such visual beauties and a hit with my group of friends. Because I enjoy the mini whipped cream puffs and mini eclairs, so much, I order a half dozen of each for my private stash. I like to try new items, so I always pick up something different and unique, such as cinnamon bread, pies, or coffee cakes. I've been to Kirschbaum's when there has been a line out the door literally, and other times I was able to walk right in. Kirschbaum's associates have always been pleasant, helpful, and accommodating no matter the volume. That says something about management and the owners. They keep their employees happy. Went in on Saturday and picked up 8 cupcakes, a few filled danish and a pound of tea cookies, also a loaf of bread. Such a waste of $30 The apple Danish was the best sample out of everything. Plenty of fruit and nice dough. The bread was fine but nothing special just bread for sandwiches. The cookies and cupcakes were the absolute worst. All the cupcakes were dry and hard and the frosting was dry, hard and sickly sweet with no taste. The cookies were dry, crumbly, tasteless and super sweet with no real flavor not even vanilla. Threw everything in the trash except the rest of the bread. Complete waste of money. The quality that used to be there has completely disappeared. Try Lilac bakery in Lombard or Kirsten's in Burr Ridge for a better experience. read more

This is the best bakery. The coffee cakes are delicious. Get your doughnuts early, they sell out fast. They make a variety of breads, they too sell out fast. If you need something for a special occasion, suggest you order at least two weeks in advance. I like that they have both regular size and mini size desserts. I will often get a variety of mini desserts and put them on a platter for guests to select. This bakery has so many wonderful items it is hard to put in one review. ONe of my favorite cakes is their yellow cake with buttercream and a dark chocolate ganache poured on top. This cake melts in your mouth. If you have not gone to Kirschbaum's, give yourself a treat and visit. But one warning, you go once ...you will be returning over and over again. read more

A friend and I walked into Kirschbaum's for some treats and stood there for a few minutes awkwardly. The people behind the counter also stood their awkwardly. They didn't greet us nor ask us what we wanted. The strange thing was when some guy walked in after us, they did greet him & ask how they could help. Errrrr, okay. I looked through the cases and asked a few questions. They weren't sure what some of the goodies were or what was in them. I took my chances and ordered 3 different cool looking treats. I had their brownie and a couple of little tarts and found them to be a bit expensive. They were all okay and I can't hate on the treats too much but nothing that I had was fantastic. I think the lackadaisical & simply not caring service left a sour taste in my mouth but I will not be back. read more

Smiley cookies are something to dream about. Once tried never forgotten. It's a sugar cookie with a perfect frosting and real chocolate eyes and smile. They can be ordered in specific colors for parties & weddings. Pink & yellow are always available in the bakery. The Dainties are SUPURB. Perfect for so many occasions. Everything from Kirschbaum's is delicious. I always feel like I am at the end of the movie Beetlejuice when I enter. It is crowded and I have number 9,999 and they are now serving number 10 ( well MAYBE that is a bit of an exaggeration) but you get my drift. If this review was just for Penny Kirschbaum, I'd give 5 stars. She has great customer service! Alas, there are other factors in play here. I was recommended to Kirschbaum's for wedding cake by a friend. They have low prices because they only do white cake, no fillings, and a sugary white buttercream frosting. A little too sugary for my taste, but that's me, and doesn't affect the rating. First, it was hard to get a call back from my cake inquiry. I left a message through their website with multiple questions. They only answered one question, ignored my others, and when I tried to call, couldn't get a hold of anyone. I guess they don't have call waiting? Because I'd get busy signals for over an hour. When I could get someone to answer the phone, they didn't sound very happy, and would shout to the others in the store asking if there was anyone who could answer wedding cake questions. They weren't much better in person. The website also says big and bold that if you're picking up a cake order, you still have to wait in line - not sure how I feel about that so big on the site - I guess if your customers didn't learn to wait in line in kindegarten like most people, that's necessary? Anyways, we were still going to go with Kirschbaum's for wedding cake because of the price. And Penny really is nice. But our wedding is on a Sunday, and this bakery is closed Sundays and Mondays - and they don't do deliveries on days the store is closed. So if your wedding is on a Sunday or Monday, you'll have to find someone to pick up your cake on Saturday, find someone's house to store it that doesn't have pets or children (or just pray that it doesn't get accidentally destroyed), and then find someone to take it to your wedding for you. That's way too much risk for me to take on when we're paying so much for a cake. But if your wedding's any other day, they can deliver for a small charge. Also - they don't take credit cards. They take cash or checks. Checks are much more risky for a business to accept. And I don't know many people who carry cash, let alone a checkbook. There's also a big sign on the front door that says they don't take credit cards. If I was just in the area and saw that sign walking by, it would look like a Don't Come In sign to me. Regardless, if they could deliver on a Sunday, they'd have my business. As it is, one star gone for not delivering Sun/Mon, and one star for the lack of customer service from the other girls in the shop. read more

I'm new to the world of crazy busy bakeries... Went early on a Saturday and there was barely standing room. I heard a lady comment "as long as there isn't a line out the door, I'm ok to wait." Wowsers! So, *don't forget to grab a number as you come in*-- that's how they will call you to take your order. That's nice because then you can walk around and see what they have without loosing your spot, or people glaring that you are cutting. Like so many places in the suburbs, the place was run by teenage girls. However, they are super helpful, energetic, pretty quick, knowledgeable, etc. They have quite a large selection of breads, but if you want it sliced, there is only 1 size. (i wanted to make cucumber sandwiches, so i wanted it very thin). They had a ton of different tea cookies, and are clearly the place to go if you want to order a party cake. But I being that I wanted some sweet stuff, I was a little bummed by the not overly huge selection of sweet goey stuff. (Ok, but there were still pecan rolls, donuts, cinnamon rolls, strudel things, etc) Can't wait to go back and try the coffee cake! read more

I never met a chocolate long john that didn't have a thick layer of delicious chocolate and a creamy center. My first trip to this bakery, my expectations were high and they definitely did not deliver. I got the last chocolate long John at 11:20a on a Thursday morning and it had NO BAVARIAN CREAM in the middle. The chocolate frosting was disappointing too. The staff was very patient and helpful and helped us decide on a design that would fit well with our wedding theme. The tasting sample we received was very generous! The price of the cake was very fair, especially compared with other wedding cake vendors. The frosting pattern was simple but beautiful, and the cake looked and tasted perfect on our wedding day!
