I had giving up trying cup cakes because of the high prices on each of them and to be disappointed how dry and horrible they taste. Fear no more Courage cupcakes are so delicious moist and reasonably priced. Plus some profits go to the cure for cancer. I was so happy I found the place open. They changed the hours so we barely made it today so it was well worth my trip, I tried four different flavors and I truly was happy with all of them. This is the very first time I had a red velvet that was so moist and the cream so soft and smooth is just melted in my mouth Yum. I had the maple bacon I removed the bacon but the maple flavor was so delicious. I also tried the chocolate banana cup cake it had a very delicious banana filling and the light chocolate cram top with dark drizzle of dark chocolate was like I was in heaven. I swung by Cupcakes for Courage recently and was blown away by it. The business started as a bake sale to raise money for a family friend with cancer, eventually became a food truck (that still operates), and is now this bakery. The friend is now cancer-free (yay!) but a percentage of the profits goes to cancer research. Cool. After admiring the shop (loved the green walls and amount of seating) and chatting with the employee, I looked over some of the cupcake options and decided to try the Lemon Supreme Pie cupcake for $3.50. Not a bad price. I got the cupcake to go. The cupcake stayed with me in a box until I was finally able to devour it an hour later while standing outside in the rain. It. Was. Amazing. I melted inside. I can't believe I waited an hour to eat it! Yet, this was the kind of cupcake I'd wait an hour to eat!! Mmmmm. It's not too often a cupcake satisfies me. Actually a very different kind of cupcake. To think, a maple based bacon topped cupcake that really works. The maple balances it out to the point of deliciousness and the right balance. I have only seen unusual cupcakes in HGTV but I am so glad that my friend Lupe bought me one of these concoctions. I am amazed that a cupcake can be balanced enough to withstand the flavors. I mean, who would of thought of this? Cupcakes for courage is one of those new age raves but I kind of feel that it will be around for quite some time. Then they moved to Elmhurst- 10 minute walk from the college and I was in heaven. Their cupcakes are amazing! Sweet treats with a great mission for their business? What's not to like? Oh ya, they are semi-famous because they have been on reality TV. I recently signed up for their emails (dangerous move) and was emailed weekly with flavors and truck locations. When my husband wanted to go to lunch near one of their locations, I quickly checked the flavored and decided that cupcakes HAD to happen today. On top of that, they had a Yelp Deal ($5 for $10 of cupcakes). Not only were cupcakes going to happen, but $10 of cupcakes! The truck arrived right on schedule and they took the time to explain what was in each cupcake. Our choices: -Vanilla Bean- very good, specks of vanilla, moist cake -Pink Velvet- cake portion didn't have much of the "red velvet" taste, but the cream cheese frosting was pretty good. Sprinkles is the only red velvet I go gaga over, so I didn't expect to fall in love with this flavor. The "pink" supports breast cancer! -Turtle- chocolate with homemade caramel & chocolate buttercream with chopped pecans. I normally don't like chocolate cake, but this flavor combo surprised me. Delish! -Gluten Free Lime in the coconut- Hands down the best GF cupcakes I have ever had! This was my favorite of the four and I would go back especially for this flavor. Sometimes I go into places that have really amazing reviews and I just end up slightly disappointed. I read all 49 reviews before, so I was fully anticipating to be let down. I can proudly say that Cupcakes 4 Courage lived up to all 'da hype and now I feel like I'm singing just another love song that's already been done before. Le sigh. I'm happy to report that there was nothing disappointing about this experience. The sheer awesomeness of this cupcakery deserves at least a thousand more praises. I have a feeling now that I've discovered this place, it'll be hard to keep me away. I went in with full intent on buying 2 for a little mid-day treat for my husband and I, but everything in my body wanted to scream "I'LL HAVE ONE OF EACH!!!" I did finally narrow it down and settled on: Mint Chocolate Chip and Lime in the Coconut. Mint Chocolate Chip: this was my husband's. I sorta hate chocolate (yeah, pretty ungirly of me) but I licked the frosting off the container. I don't even know how to describe what I felt, but it was slightly euphoric. The frosting was so light and airy, it reminded me of a thin mint Girl Scout cookie but better. I sat there creepily watching him eat the cupcake willing him to offer me a bite. He finally did after the darn thing was near gone and I had to happily oblige. So out-of-this-world yummy. Lime in the Coconut: mine and I ate the whoooole thing solo without even a drop of remorse. Only complaint is that I would like a little more lime in it, but that's just a personal preference cause I love me some lime! So, we invited them back for another event at the end of the month. After requesting availability through their website, our date was confirmed and I was told an agreement would follow. It never did. I love cupcakes and I love the business model for this food truck turned bricks and mortar cute store. Nice location and a friendly clerk! I just wish I had loved all the cupcakes I bought. I had the Yelp deal so I picked up a half a dozen to share with my husband, daughter and son in law. My husband adored the key lime pie and gave me a moist and delicious bite so I could savor its deliciousness as well. My daughter adored the Sweet Potato Pie, telling me that it was also very moist and perfect in every way. Those two were six stars! The other four were dry and that was such a disappointment. I think there are two ways that you end up with a dried up cupcake - either it's over baked or it's sold past its prime. I am not sure which was the culprit here but the dark chocolate was dry with too much frosting that was fairly dry as well. The Spicy Turtle was fun on the top with the kick on the walnuts but the rest was too dry to finish. The pink Velvet was disappointingly non moist as well. That being said, this little store filled with the most decadent, luscious, fabulous cupcakes has a ton of momentum behind it for an exceptionally worthy cause. And though I get a kick out of their lime green cupcake-mobile, I get an even bigger kick that they have a little place just a stones throw away; which is exceptionally useful when some sort of craving arises. Or when you need to "bring something" and it needs to be "really something". This month the lime green ribbon stands proudly beside the pink, and their pink velvet cupcake is a lighter, softer version of the red velvet; gluten free too! We also took two Salted Caramel for my niece and two fabled Reese's Pieces for my nephew; that should keep them going all evening. And while you indulge; have coffee; they do coffee right too! I participated in the Foodie 5K this past weekend in Wheaton and they gave us a $2 voucher to use at any food truck after the race. I tried both the peanut butter and French Silk. The cake was moist with the surprise filling and the frosting was to die for. Originally they offered one gluten free flavor only on Fridays, but now I see in their Facebook/Twitter updates that they are carrying them more throughout the week. I'm also a Cupcakeaholic and this place is my spot. I've had 10 cupcakes from here and they were all good even days later. My biggest problem with cupcake shops are the inconsistencies. These had none. All of the cakes were moist and they don't skimp on the frosting. So far my favorites are the Taffy Apple, Carrot, Peanut Butter Banana, and the Elvis. The driver is very friendly and even met me in the burbs for a special order of 20 cupcakes for our customers. Looking forward to trying more of the exotic flavors. read more
