I swung by Cupcakes for Courage recently and was blown away by it. The business started as a bake sale to raise money for a family friend with cancer, eventually became a food truck (that still operates), and is now this bakery. The friend is now cancer-free (yay!) but a percentage of the profits goes to cancer research. Cool. After admiring the shop (loved the green walls and amount of seating) and chatting with the employee, I looked over some of the cupcake options and decided to try the Lemon Supreme Pie cupcake for $3.50. Not a bad price. I got the cupcake to go. The cupcake stayed with me in a box until I was finally able to devour it an hour later while standing outside in the rain. It. Was. Amazing. I melted inside. I can't believe I waited an hour to eat it! Yet, this was the kind of cupcake I'd wait an hour to eat!! Mmmmm. It's not too often a cupcake satisfies me. Orgasmic cupcakes at a good price that supports a cause? This place makes me more than happy. (NOTE: I wasn't sure which listing to write this review for so I wrote it for both of them.)

Actually a very different kind of cupcake. To think, a maple based bacon topped cupcake that really works. The maple balances it out to the point of deliciousness and the right balance. I have only seen unusual cupcakes in HGTV but I am so glad that my friend Lupe bought me one of these concoctions. I am amazed that a cupcake can be balanced enough to withstand the flavors. I mean, who would of thought of this? Cupcakes for courage is one of those new age raves but I kind of feel that it will be around for quite some time. I don't mind following them on face book and begin stalking, this is a good stalk, you know the kind that gets you a smile on your face. Can't wait to try their pistachio cupcake for sure. Unfortunately they do not accept credit cards, which of course is kind of why I can't give them a perfect score, due to myself as well as many others, never actually carrying cash, I totally understand that they do not want to pay $ to a credit card company because that falls into their profits. I can totally understand this but for some of us who never carry cash, it can be an inconvenience. But still, I can live with that.

Stopped in for a quick breakfast on our way out of town. We appreciated the fast counter service, good pricing, and good tasting food. I had the huevos rancheros and tried the pancakes. You are not going to get the meal of your life here but expect good value. Now, the chocolate ganache donut is another story.... Don't care what it cost because it was delicious!

Foreign matter in cupcake that appears to be a nut shell.

I have had many good cupcakes in the past from Cupcakes for Courage. They make a pretty decent gluten-free cupcake. On another day, they would be deserving of a 4 or 5-star rating. Unfortunately, my most recent experience was not so pleasant. I had a piece of what appears to be a pistachio shell that was in the cupcake. I don't know if it was in the frosting or baked into the cake since I eat all cupcakes as they were intended to be eaten - both the cake and frosting are consumed at the same time. And, unfortunately, the cupcake itself tasted nothing like the flavor that was advertised.

Cupcakes for Courage now has a store front at 108 W. Park in Elmhurst....woooo hooo! It is super cute with green/white decor and lighting enclosed in wire baskets. Cases filled with cupcakes, donuts, muffins and croissants! What's not to like?! Plenty of seating for dine in coffee and cupcake eaters. Fancy shmancy take out containers for cupcakes on the go! Tried the pink velvet today. The cream cheese frosting is delightful and the cupcake is super moist. Wanted to try the key lime pie cupcake too, but I can only eat so many cupcakes at a time...

I just came from the cupcakes for courage food truck. One word: DELICIOUS. I'm a huge fan of pistachio and luckily, they had a pistachio cupcake! The flavor its amazing. Very sweet. The lady was also VERY nice. She gave me their punch card and was very warm. I'm not a huge fan of cupcakes but this is just GOOD. They also give their proceeds to the cause: non-Hodgkins T-cell Lymphoma! The truck was located right outside of 35 W. Wacker on Wednesday at 2:30pm.

Sweet treats with a great mission for their business? What's not to like? Oh ya, they are semi-famous because they have been on reality TV. I recently signed up for their emails (dangerous move) and was emailed weekly with flavors and truck locations. When my husband wanted to go to lunch near one of their locations, I quickly checked the flavored and decided that cupcakes HAD to happen today. On top of that, they had a Yelp Deal ($5 for $10 of cupcakes). Not only were cupcakes going to happen, but $10 of cupcakes! The truck arrived right on schedule and they took the time to explain what was in each cupcake. Our choices: -Vanilla Bean- very good, specks of vanilla, moist cake -Pink Velvet- cake portion didn't have much of the "red velvet" taste, but the cream cheese frosting was pretty good. Sprinkles is the only red velvet I go gaga over, so I didn't expect to fall in love with this flavor. The "pink" supports breast cancer! -Turtle- chocolate with homemade caramel & chocolate buttercream with chopped pecans. I normally don't like chocolate cake, but this flavor combo surprised me. Delish! -Gluten Free Lime in the coconut- Hands down the best GF cupcakes I have ever had! This was my favorite of the four and I would go back especially for this flavor. I loved the tart-sweet flavor combo and it was filled with homemade lime curd. A great unique flavor that they pull off perfectly! Get the yelp deal...follow that truck...eat the cupcakes...or 4.

    Mint chocolate cupcake.

After an hour we headed back and were told we had just a few more parties ahead of us. Another half hour passed and we checked in again, again being told our table would be ready soon. Another half hour passed, with our wait time now being TWO full hours, when we again checked in and they said we were next in line. After another 15 minutes, we just asked then to be honest since we were dining with 4 (now starving) kids, and they figured something out to be able to seat us (spoiler alert- they sat our party of 7 at a 4 person table). Now on to the positives... service was fantastic, food was fantastic, and the ambiance was lively and very family friendly. The different flavored mimosas were perfect, they had a great kids menu, including Mickey Mouse pancakes, and my whole group left stuffed and happy. Stray Hen would have been such an easy 5 stars had it not been for the more than double wait time with no explanation. Hopefully our next visit is better and I can update accordingly!

My latte was mediocre at best. It wasn't very flavorful, and it wasn't very coffee forward, so I wonder if they use less shots of espresso than is standard or less strong espresso. The thing that bothered me most though was that the barista swirled my drink in front of me, it splashed all over out of the top and sides of the lid, and instead of fixing it or apologizing (or even just acknowledging it!!!!), he proceeded to hand it to me and said "have a great day!" I walked over with my baby in tow and cleaned it up myself. It was SO odd to me. The space is bright, there are plenty of seats, and parking is easy. When I think of a quality small local business this place is the model! I will say some of the pastries are of questionable quality, I wouldnt buy a croissant from here. Doughnuts controversial at my house, but I think they're great. (def better than Dunkin and fair price) Cinnamon rolls, cookies, scones are all good. Drinks are decent enough but if you're a tea/coffee snob and just looking for a beverage you're probably better off going next door (Brewpoint), cos this place's main event is the food. It's also pretty quiet after the morning rush, so good place to snack and get some work done. Has only 3 power outlets by tables, but they're usually not in use anyway 9/10

Let me start by saying that we're a huge fans of small businesses and want to see them succeed…read more I've also worked in plenty of restaurants and coffee shops in my day. Definitely not trying to be a hater. My friend and I were on our way home from Chicago, looked up some bakeries along our route. We stopped here to get some goodies to take home to family, and to snack and have a coffee while we drove 6 hours. My friend ordered: white chocolate coconut latte, 2 donut holes, a strawberry, a salted caramel, and a pink velvet cupcake. I ordered: chocolate pretzel iced latte, a big chocolate chip cookie, tropical fruit (?) danish, coconut, pink velvet, and French silk cupcakes. I'd say between the two of us we probably spent $60+? Walking in the shop is adorable and colorful, an employee had a brightly colored tie dye shirt on and we said hello to them first, commented on how much we liked their shirt, and barely got a response back, let alone a greeting. The employee at the counter wasn't rude but definitely not overly eager to greet or offer up information. Questions were answered when we asked, that was it. When I received my iced latte I asked if they had any straws and just got a head shake in response. Totally fine with no straw, but my friend found a stir stick for me, which was honestly the main reason I wanted a straw so I could stir up what was clearly sitting on the bottom of the cup. Lattes were fine. We tried the chocolate chip cookie in the car and the texture was good, crispier on the edges and the middle was chewy enough. But it tasted very bland, so we didn't finish it. A little while later we decided to try the donut holes, they had good flavor but they were so dry and crumbly, presumably because they were sitting out in the open air, who knows for how long. Also didn't finish those. Even later we decided to try the salted caramel cupcake because I'd read on the case that they had Swiss meringue buttercream so I was really excited about that, and thought for sure this would be where they would excel. While the flavor of the cake was fine, I wouldn't say it tasted like salted caramel, there was some kind of cream in the middle that was good, again not salty or caramely. But that was the heaviest, most dense cupcake I've ever had, and not in a good way. The buttercream was good, and the caramel drizzle on top did taste salty. My husband was so excited that I was bringing home that tropical fruit danish and the coconut cupcake. We tried the coconut cupcake together and again, it had a lot of actual coconut in the batter, it was dense but also dry. We abandoned the cake and ate buttercream, which was good but not coconutty. So we moved onto the French silk cupcake. This cake had a great texture, light and soft, good flavor, some kind of chocolate mousse in the middle was good too. Again, good buttercream, but the top had a bunch of dry, flavorless pie crust chunks all over it. I understand that it was supposed to mimic a French silk pie, but it was such a good cake without the crust chunks. My husband had his pastry today (next day) and though dry he said the middle was good, other than the pineapple in the middle he couldn't taste any other flavor. We tried the pink velvet after dinner tonight and again with the super heavy and dense cake texture, no real flavor, but the cream cheese frosting was yummy. I cannot say how the other cupcakes were, as my friend was so disappointed in the one we shared and the report we gave her about the ones we tried, that she hasn't eaten them. Ultimately the French silk one was the only item that was eaten completely. Keep making that buttercream, it was the best part of everything we bought. I sincerely hope your employees weren't having a hard day, I try to be understanding that you never know what someone is going through, but that's the only reason I can think of for them to be so completely disinterested in helping or talking to paying/tipping/polite customers.
