Have stopped at Lilac Bakery one time in each of the last 4 months . Being from Winfield it's a little bit of a hike for this old man but well worth the trip. Everything I had from this bakery from the donuts, to sweet rolls to the cookies especially the decorated ones my grandkids love to the cinnamon bread, sweet breads, dinner rolls and speciality pastries have all been excellent, fresh, tasty and enjoyable. I have never really been here before this past year, so I wanted to take advantage to order a cake for my sons birthday. I ordered it August 31, told them I wanted a yellow cake, with buttercream filling and buttercream frosting in the shape of a dog bone because his party was Paw Patrol themed. They did the shape perfectly, but the cake was marbled when I hadn't asked for it to be. I was called at 11am, when I told them I wanted to pick it up to be told to not come until after 1130am. I wouldn't think that's an issue until I got there to see it wasn't even COMPLETELY finished. They asked what I wanted written on it when I got there and was told "you gotta specify what exactly you want". It was poorly iced, the edges of the cake were showing through and you can tell it was rushed. I'm not happy about it, and sadly will not be going back for my cakes in the future. read more

This is hands down my favorite bakery. I come here all the time for their danishes, but I end up leaving w so much more than that. Amazing cookies, maple bacon donuts, fruit pizza. Protips - if you can try to get there as soon as they open. This place is very popular and the coffee cakes do sell out fast. You can call in orders ahead of time. You can customize coffee cakes when you order ahead. If you dont see something, just ask. One of my graduating seniors gifted me a blueberry pound cake from The Lilac Bakery. Oh, holy heck: this thing is AMAZING! It's so soft (even the bottom isn't super sturdy while holding/transporting), moist, full of blueberries, and has a wonderful coating of sugar on top! I've eaten almost the entire thing, and it's only been two days. Aaaaand I live alone. So there's that. But I'm pregnant, sooo does the "eating for two" excuse hold up? Finally made it to Lilac Bakery after living in Lombard for 15 years. I too have tried other bakeries in the area, and I have to say that while I love the cannoli at Cuppies, and the donuts at Balkan, my favorite all around choice now must be the Lilac Bakery. I decided to do a personal taste test and stopped in EARLY morning to get 6 different items. My plan, to cut the items into smaller pieces and savor them SLOWLY. The six items cost me around $10 - which I think is OK since the quality and overall experience was exceptional. The tiny pecan roll - wow - perfect bites of carmel dosed bread with pecans on top - and a perfect hint of cinnamon - heaven! Custard filled chocolate eclair - yum - delicious chocolate and smooth delicious velvety vanilla custard. Powered sugar coated custard punchki - again, the custard is perfect. The dough is not too sweet and neither too dense - perfect amount of custard. Lemon bar - MMM mm - I do love lemon and these little bars have a wonderful crust as a base, sweet lemon and sugar coating on top. Old fashioned favorite of mine. Blueberry cheesecake bar - pretty and delicious. A bit of a cake with cheesecake and blueberry all mixed together is smooth, creamy and a delight. Apple or cherry squares (not sure of the true name) - I got the cherry. There is a little bit of a light crust bottom, filled with cherry and a white solid glaze on top. The white glazed top is of perfect sweetness. I don't do sweets often and I am glad I tried 6 things in small bits for my sampling. I get to do it again tomorrow and the next day. I suggest you stop in for a sample box too and share with a friend of a loved one. read more

I've been going to this bakery since I was a child, and it is absolutely amazing! The pastries are definitely the best in the county! And they did an incredible job making a multitiered wedding/ anniversary cake exactly as we wanted, with numerous special features! The staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating and all their many many food options are absolutely delicious!! And they are far more reasonable priced than any other local bakery. Paczki Day was an absolute disaster here. I felt so bad for the employees working while other workers stood there like deers in headlights watching the whole mess unfold. I preordered and prepaid and when I got there they didn't have preorders ready and then would come back and tell you they didn't have the flavors you ordered while boxing them then . WHAT, purposely preordered and prepaid so would be guaranteed what we wanted. Totally disorganized and like they didn't know this would be a busy day. Shame on them and I wasn't the only one so much complaining and disappointment. They have lost my business and probably many others. I was here late in the day, so most of the bread and all of the croissants were gone. I ignored the cookies (thoughtfully boxed up and labeled "without nuts" or "with nuts") and got a couple of different cake/pastry confections. They use a lot of chocolate mousse in those and it's nice; the cake roll slices are very rich; the lemon bars chewy; and the cake/mousse mice adorable. (Their cake base was perhaps a little dry.) The crescent almond cookies topped with chocolate mousse and chocolate frosting are decadent and recommended. read more

The kids absolutely adore their Smiley Face cookies, and you can count on Lilac Bakery to deliver lots of traditional treats like eclairs, apple slices, and buttery cookies, including nut-free ones. They need to step up their mask policy. On our last venture, there were two patrons allowed inside, and served, without masks. We are only patronizing stores that adhere more stringently to their mask policy. See you again, but maybe not until next spring. read more

FAT TUESDAY REVIEW This was an ab-so-lute disaster! Since we just moved to Lombard and I pass the bakery on my way to work, I thought it would be fun to place an order for the office. I placed a pre-order a week before over the phone for 31 paczki. The woman who took my order did not tell me I could PREPAY! Completely different from the PREORDER! So I arrive this morning at 7:30 - the time I requested on my order - and I had to stand in line with everyone else who was just there to order from the counter. Well, remember, I got there at 7:30 and I finally left with my order at 9:10. While the lady at the counter was friendly, she was moving at a snails pace for the line out the door. There were so many things they could have done to have this line move faster but they just didn't seem to care. The paczki's were delicious and we are all very happy but man, that was a rude awakening this morning when I thought I was prepared. read more

Made the mistake on "Paczki Day" thinking I could pick up a few paczkis like I have in the past. I got in line early before they opened and when they opened the doors at 7:00 AM I moved up to right outside their entrance. Here's where the confusion started as several people who were not in line walked right up to the door asking where the pre-paid line was. Other customers in line informed them there was one line and when you got inside the line split into two lines pre-paid & non-prepaid. Being told that multiple times was not good enough for one woman, who asked to be let inside to ask the bakery staff a question. After having her question answered, she got in the back of the pre-paid line inside the store therefore cutting in front of the entire line that was lined up outside & down walkway of the other storefronts. I make it inside the store after a couple of minutes & the bakery has one woman picking orders & ringing up the order in the non-prepaid line. Totally inefficient process as the non-prepaid line is moving at a snail's pace as people are placing large orders which are taking a long time to fulfill. I felt bad for this woman filling these orders as she has no help on one of their busiest days of the year. Meanwhile, a woman who has waited in the pre-paid line returns to the non-prepaid line because though she had pre-ordered prior to Paczki Day she had not paid for them so she was in the wrong line. I guess she was confused by the word "pre-paid." She asks to get back her original place in line back and the person who was originally behind her allows it. Not that one extra person in line will matter as this line is moving extremely slow. Eventually, I had to abandon the Paczki quest as I couldn't afford to wait in line all morning like the rest of Lombard. It's just disappointing to see such a poorly run operation to accommodate customers in a efficient manner. Apparently if your product is in such high demand you don't have to care about customer service. Next "Paczki Day" I'll have to place my order ahead of time & probably try a bakery with better customer service. read more

Everything I've tried has been better than expected. This review is NOT for made to order cakes. Due to the other reviews, I don't know that I would go to this bakery for a birthday cake. The older woman behind the counter is downright rude and does not care if you do business there are not. I wanted to shop local for my child's first birthday and was completely disappointed. Told them I was doing an Elmo themed birthday, but they don't really do that. Ordered a smash cake but they don't really do that either. I wanted a red smash cake and they called to confirm and I said Yes. Come the day BEFORE the party I pick up the cake and it's WHITE!!! Then they tried to blame it on me. And the cake was COMPLETELY over frosted, very little cake and horribly decorated. On the up side they spelled my sons name correctly. AVOID, if you are looking for a special cake. read more

I've been going to this bakery and their previous location in Glen Ellyn for years. Everything is so tasty and fresh. They are willing to decorate cakes to your request and have gone above and beyond for a couple of my ideas for my son's birthdays. Just ask, they can probably do it! I look forward to Paczki Day every year and know to order the prior week. This place is old school. That means it's real bakery goods, not the preservative filled, lard frosted junk you get at grocery stores and Costco. Recently, I made a run in one morning and hit Seven area bakeries in 40 minutes ( aka Life: I know how to live it), selecting a variety of confections for my workplace. The list, in row of visiting: Lilac Bakery, Kuppie's, Aracely's, Azteca Bakery (in the Villa Park Fruit Market), Sweet Connections Bakery, La Luz de Marelas, and the Dominick's bakery on York and Grand (sorta counts as a bakery). Lilac was the median between the mexican bakeries (not very sweet on most of their items) and Kuppies (sugar/sweetness like there's no tomorrow). They're very good, but more expensive than either Aracely's or Azteca (5 minutes away), and excepting excellent Packzi's on Fat Tuesday, not as good as Kuppie's (also 5 minutes away). Good, but on a regular basis not my first choice in local area bakeries. read more
