Disappointed because I really wanted to support a local bakery. I was excited to try the donuts and baked goods from Sylvia's Bakery seeing the positive reviews on here, but everything I got was very dry. I got a cinnamon twist and slice of carrot cake, not sure if it was because they're not fresh but both were SO dry and hard in texture. Donut was not fluffy at all, cake tasted like it was stored in the fridge for a day or two already. Didn't finish either of them.... Honestly there are better baked goods from Jewel-Osco or other grocers. Sylvia seems like a very sweet lady though, great service but would not be back. read more

Our initial visit was back in 2020 and the cupcake that we had didn't leave a very strong impression. However, fast forward to 2023, we revisited and both times we were content with our selections. We tried the cannolis, eclair, vanilla glazed yeast donut, chocolate glazed yeast donut, cruller, and zepoles. I am a huge sucker for yeast donuts and I could easily down one anytime and whenever. So that is a no-brainer for me. The other two items that we particularly enjoyed are the eclair and zepole. The custard was smooth and finger-licking good! We ordered over $50 worth of pastries over the span of two weeks. With this bakery being so close to home, it's going to be detrimental my healthy diet plans. Not sure if I can successfully fight my temptations...but I am really looking forward to trying their paczkis when they are back in season. read more

Stopped by once to try out their doughnuts. Pretty basic looking mom and pop bakery. Their yeast doughnuts are big and fluffy. Their chocolate glazed is very light and not too rich, I prefer darker chocolate. I thought the cake doughnut was ok. And their danish is super sweet and overfilled, if that's your thing. The women helping me also through in a few extras which was an unexpected and appreciated surprise. I would definitely choose their doughnuts over DD, but they aren't the best I've had. read more

My wife and I were looking for a local bakery to go to for a once a week treats for ourselves. We decided to try out Sylvia's. We were glad we did. We tried a variety of treats. Starting with a chocolate Long John doughnut, it was fresh, light, and tasty. Then tried the Apple pastry, that was equally as good. Next was the fudge brownie. Very rich, chocolatey, and decadent. And lastly, the blueberry muffin. Light, fluffy, and loaded with tasty blueberries. All the stuff we tried, not a bad one in the bunch. And the prices were reasonable, worth every penny. One of the best bakeries we have been to since Jarosch's Bakery in Elk Grove Village. A bold statement? Yes indeed. And here's another one: I daresay Sylvia's can give Jarosch's a run for his money! Sylvia's is now our go-to for tasty treats. And we will be back again soon. read more

Good chocolate frosted donuts that's why one star but other than that this place sucks. Their customer service is either non existent or awful. The lady who answers the phone always has some kind of emergency that she can't take an order over the phone and then gives an attitude when you get into the store. Great coffee cakes. The chocolate one looks way too sweet but was not and was a filo dough layered with whispy chocolate inside. Though I was the only one in there and I saw 3 people behind the counter less than 10 feet away I waited at least 5 minutes to be recognized. Allright then! Came here TWICE this last week for paczki. That's right, twice. Bought some paczki on Sunday for Lundi Gras. They were huge. And HEAVY. Always a good sign with paczki. Gave most away to family & neighbors. Saved only 2 for me & my man. We dove in straightaway and they were delicious - yellow, yeasty, sweet dough, heavy as a rock & loaded with filling. Best. Paczki. I've. Ever. Eaten. Kudos to the team at Sylvia's. I have had other pastries from there over the years & was not impressed. But this, THIS was fabulous! I will be back. Told all my friends. After looking through the reviews decided to give this place a go for a specialty cake. First off not sure what reviewers idea of "friendly" is...but this wasn't friendly! Of course they can do whatever you want for decoration..however...for quadruple the price of other bakeries I found!!!! Not worth the time or effort to ever set foot in this place again...ever!!!!! We got cupcakes at lunchtime...even if they were made in the morning, it would still be okay. However, the cake was hard, there's some kind of gelatinous syrup on top of the strawberries (is it meant to hide the fact that the strawberries are sad?), the strawberries are older and mushy...and the frosting has a plastic taste like it was bought in a tub. Maybe they make other treats that are tasty, but I definitely don't recommend the cupcakes. Such a disappointment. read more

It was really difficult communicating with the people at this bakery. The cake was okay, but not what I wanted. I would not use Sylvia's again. I called asking about a birthday cake for my son. The gentleman I spoke to said to text some pictures of what I wanted to their phone number, and that within 30 minutes someone would get back to me with some options and prices. I attempted to text the pictures later that night, only to find out that it was a landline. So the next day I sent a message to the bakery through the website. After several hours with no response, I finally called and spoke to Diane. She had no idea who I was, that I had spoken to an employee the previous day, or that I had messaged the bakery via their website. I texted the pictures directly to her and told her what I wanted (an ocean-themed cake). She immediately discouraged me from a fondant cake, even though that's what I wanted. Didn't even offer me pricing, just said that it was very expensive. So I said buttercream would be fine too, as long as it looked nice. Then she asked me if I wanted hand-piped decorations or a printable image on the cake. I asked for hand-piped decorations, and she asked me "Like Finding Nemo?" I tried to explain to her that the cake can have a clownfish on it, but it's NOT a Finding Nemo cake. It's just a generic ocean cake. And she was like "Okay, so we'll do hand-piped Finding Nemo decorations." I couldn't seem to get my idea across to her, so finally I just told her that the printable image was fine. In the end the cake was very tasty and looked nice, but it's not what I wanted. My son's party was getting closer, and out of desperation and frustration at lack of communication I agreed to let them do what they wanted. But I didn't want buttercream; I wanted fondant (I don't know why she nipped that idea in the bud so quickly). I wanted hand-piped decorations, not a printable image. To me that was the worst part, because I could have gone to Target and had them do an edible image for a lot less. I went to a *real* bakery because I wanted something better than I could get at Target. Communication at this place is just weird. Half the time I didn't know whether Diane was talking to me or something else in the store because I didn't know what she was saying. She speaks very quickly and it always seemed really hectic when we spoke. Would not use this bakery again. read more

Wow! That is all I can say. After Busy Bee Bakery in DG closed down, my father began going there for atomic bomb cakes. The cakes were ok, dad liked them and was paying, so I did not argue. Went to order a cake for my son's 18th birthday and could not find anything on their website. I called and was told to look on pinterest and pick out a cake and call them back. I called back at 4:30 pm Tuesday evening and was told the bakery is closed, call back tomorrow. I called again 7 x later and was hung up on every single time. I called back the next morning and decided not to mention being hung up on 7 x and began to order a simple cake the number 1 and the number 8 - yellow cake no filling, with white buttercream frosting with blue sprinkles. Enough to feed 25 people. $189 was the cost. I was told there was a lot of work involved. Ordered same cake elsewhere for $45.00 wow!!!! I give it no stars read more

About three years ago I developed an extreme love for donuts. Whenever possible I seek out new places to try, always searching for fried dough perfection. Mmm....fried dough. I uncovered Sylvia's on my last visit to Darien and I'm hooked. Great quality, low prices and friendly staff. I'm not sure that Sylvia's has the perfect donut...however they do produce a solid product that brings happiness to many donut loving suburbanites. I've tried quite a few donut joints in the burbs and Sylvia's is the CLEAR winner. read more
