Whenever I hear about a new restaurant opening up, I immediately want to pull up. I may not have gone to Dumpling Time opening weekend, but when I did go, oh what I delightful treat was that meal. My boyfriend and I came and ordered a couple of items together. They were close to closing time, but our server was patient and gave us time to figure out all that we wanted. Come here and check out everything. Then, return a d try the rest of the menu. It appears like the average price per dish is $12. That is totally fine. Also, everyone who works here is fabulous. Around 30 minutes wait on a Saturday afternoon (opening week). Wanted to try especially since I don't need to cross the bridge - the SF location has 2,000+ reviews with 4 stars. I found most items to be just around the 3-3.5 star range. Service was friendly, food came out fast and was hot too! *Chili pork dumplings - 3/5, nothing stood out much *XLB - 3/5 *Lamb dumplings - 4/5, pretty good, I loved the lamb take on this but the garnishes weren't really necessary. Seemed to be just for presentation (they were just raw veggies) *String beans - 3/5, lacked depth and salt but liked that it was fresh (came out hot) *Seafood gyoza, 4/5, this was my favorite. The seafood with the creaminess of the aioli worked well together! On the pricier side and food seems to cater to a more western palette. Agree with another review that the chili oil didn't add much either. Not too sure if I'd come again, but it was good to try. One of the best siumai (pork) in the bay but pretty small. The wrapper on the fry dumplings were too thick. The texture seems more of a fry potstickers instead. The breaded shrimp roll is a ripped off. The shrimp/shrimp paste was almost non existent. My friend didn't even know there were shrimp in it. As for the stir fry rice noodle, there's a strong spice in it that I did not like. Also, it tasted like it was just mixed with dry spices so the noodle itself had no flavor. As for the Shanghai dumplings, like the other dumplings, the wrapper is thicker than it's supposed to be but not as thick like potsticker. I am not impressed of the soup inside the dumpling either. Doesn't have that Shanghai dumpling sweetness. I would of given this place another star if this place isn't so overpriced. This place is not any close to a dimsum place at all. I was here Sunday afternoon, and pit my name down for a party of two. I asked the lady up front on how long the wait was going to be, she said 30min. Great, we will just walk around for a little bit. Came back 15min later came back and our name wa crossed off. And so have many many groups names. I get it, there are tables ment for 2, so sometimes they are a little faster. I ironically read the reviews before coming and from what I saw it was a hit or miss. I ordered garlic green beans, the southwest fried rice noodles, xiao long bao and chili pork dumplings. I really liked the seasoning on the garlic greens beans and the xiao long bao, almost tasted like din tai fung. I wish they had ginger to add to the xiao long bao. The chili pork dumpling was okay. I agree with some of the reviews that it was missing salt possibly? It was bland and flavorless. And same with the southwest fried rice noodles. It was missing something, I even added soy sauce and didn't really sit well with me. The food was not that memorable experience besides the two out of four items I got. The service was great and the waitress checked in with my table frequently. The ambiance was nice, I thought it was a little cold in the restaurant and glad I brought a sweater. Shopping on Fourth St in Berkeley and decided to try this newly opened restaurant. I sat outside and was served quickly. I ordered the tofu and it was magnificent! Warm and crispy on the outside, melted in your mouth tender on the inside. I'd say it was the best tofu I'd ever had. I also ordered the garlic green beans. This must have been our fifth visit to Dumpling Time. One of our favorite menu items was the crispy tofu, which we ordered every time. And now it's gone, only to be replaced by a not-very-good mapo tofu. What a huge disappointment! It's hard to understand why they would replace such an outstanding dish with a completely mundane one. It's a version of healthier dimsum and not gonna lie it feels more pleasant coz usually dimsum is very fatty but Dumpling time made it more healthier and I'm buying it! My BF (who was hesitant in coming here) and I came here after visiting the Apple store. I tried to reassure him that it is the best dumplings in the Bay Area, but now I'm embarrassed because we had a horrible experience. Pork Xlb (photo below) There was barely to NO soup in the dumplings and it got stuck and broke when I tried to take it out of the ramekin. BF disappointed. First time writing a review for a restaurant. I stopped by for lunch here on a Friday. Ordered a seafood gyoza a some garlic broccolini. It took more than 30' for the foods to come out while all the tables was seated after me getting their food. I gave 3.5 for the food. But it was such an unpleasant experience when the kitchen staffs couldn't be able to keep up with the foods serving time and communicate with the waitresses. I have to asked twice for the servers to give me an update on how long it will take for my foods to be ready. At least one of the waitress told me that my meal will be on the house-and apologized for the long wait when it wasn't even busy. I may/may not give this another try. Hopefully they'll improve. read more

I was a big fan of Dumpling Time but their quality has gone down hill. Frequented original SF location dozens of times and Berkeley many times since it's opened. Last time our veggie gyoza were over cooked. We let the server know and despite not eating was charged. This last time both me and my partner got sick after our last meal and felt like the seafood gyoza smelled fishy. This makes me sad :( especially when paying top dollar for dim sum. read more

I've been obsessed with wood ear mushrooms and the salad here with wood ear mushrooms did not disappoint. One of the best salads I've ever had. I cannot really say much for ambiance as I ordered take out but the service was very friendly and welcoming when I picked up my order. read more

I went here on a first date because it was halfway between where I live in San Jose and where they live in Sonoma County. The food was delicious and service was quick. I would list everything that we ordered and give detail about each item, but honestly that would take too long because we ordered so much. Just trust that the food is delicious! Also, keep in mind that they have several locations in the Bay Area, so be sure there isn't one closer to you before driving all the way into Berkeley. The ONE issue I have is how they seat tables. You walk up, put your name on a paper list (by you I actually mean YOU, not the host), and they call you as a table becomes available. I know this doesn't sound so absurd; however, when it leads to nearly a two hour wait time without any estimate on how long it will be, it could lead to frustration. I wasn't too frustrated as I spent the two hours talking to my date, but at one point I started to get a bit hangry. Something to note though is that this location just opened, so they may just not have set up their reservations or waitlist services. Either way, next time I'm in Berkeley and got a hankering for dumplings, you will find me at Dumpling Time. read more

I've been here 2-3 times since they've opened and have always left satisfied! There is always a long line; put your name down on the wait list, and shop around the block for 15-20 minutes, the wait usually goes by pretty quick! The staff is friendly, accommodating, and attentive. The Tom Yum XLB and garlic green beans are my fave! Everything I've tried is packed with flavor!
