We went with friends here on Canada day. We were looking for a place to sit and chat with our old friends over food. This place was a last minute choice and we were pleasantly surprised. The food was tasty (especially the butter naan and Rara mutton), the wait staff were very attentive and nice ambience. A big shout out to Ritish for taking good care of us. The naan was fresh and delicious but aside from that, this place is nothing to write home about. Service was sub par - quick enough but not personable (uur waiter barely said more than 5 words to us). We ordered the lamb biriyani - enough for two people but I've definitely had way better biriyani. The chicken vindaloo was horrible - did not taste like vindaloo at all. Both these dishes get one star at max. The food is decent-good. The service is very bad and the restaurant desperately needs to upgrade it's decor. We ordered chicken biryani and we got the lamb instead. The waiter insisted it was chicken until the manager came out and confirmed it was lamb. As a result, the manager offered us a free biryani. The lamb chops are excellent and the biryani was decent, but the samosas were very dry. My family and I dropped by this place yesterday. I was able to book a reservation for the same day, which I appreciated. When we arrived, we were immediately seated. Our chairs were not clean and had to dust off some crumbs (possibly from previous guest's food) and the furniture had old stains. Our waiter was very polite, and regularly checked in on us. So the service was great. However, the food is a different story. The portions and the taste of the food could have been much better. I've been to Dum pukht twice, once in 2016 and once in 2017. On both those occasions I had no complaints about their food and rather loved it. Perhaps the owner has changed, because I found the food tastes different. This time the food was overpowered with cream and masala and was lacking normal levels of salt. The portion sizes have decreased as well. I ordered the hiryali chicken tikka and black pepper chicken tikka as starters. The hiralyi chicken tikka was hard on the inside (not tender) and seemed to be coated with green color rather than having any mint flavors. Also, the paneer Tikka masala and khadi chicken were disportionately full of gravy and green peppers. Most of the time, I had to fish for paneeer/ chicken pieces. We went there last night. There was a large group (20+) being served there. Our server mentioned straight away that he will come back to serve us after 10 to 15 minutes as they were busy serving this big group. This ticked me off a bit as you don't expect the server to tell you of a delayed start as the first thing when you step foot in the restaurant. After being ignored for almost 30 minutes I was about to loose my patience. The owner of the restaurant realized and came to apologize for all this. We were served very well hereafter. As soon as the food came, all the tension dissipated. The food is really really good. It made all the wait worth it. To make up for things, the owner then served us an amazing desert on the house, which we really appreciated. In the end, we realized that we were extremely hungry going in and with two hungry kids we were a little cranky. Places can get busy and it can be difficult to take care of all patrons evenly. We booked a table for 4 at the beginning of the week. We arrived at the restaurant a little early. After waiting at the entrance for some time, we went to find a host. There were several open tables, but we were told that they were for a party of 20. We were seated at the bar to wait. After 40 minutes we decided to leave. The tables were still empty. We came here after a rave review from a family friend, and he was right: Dum Pukht has great food. The ambiance and decor are pretty cool and the service was good. Visited this Restaurant on 23rd Jan in the evening around 9 pm. Positives: Very good food, and one of the better Fine Indian Cuisine restaurants in Markham/Richmond Hill area. Improvements needed: The Server and Hostess seemed to be overwhelmed as the restaurant was very busy, and made some errors with our orders. I was really excited to try Dum Pukht after reading all the reviews about the food. I had a monster craving for Indian food, so I called up a buddy and headed there for lunch. When we got there, we were promptly ushered to a small table for two. Being a big guy I preferred a larger table and asked to be seated by the window. The waiter reluctantly sat us at the table and went on his way. We sat there for 10 mins trying to get the attention of the waiter for some menus, so that order. Still being ignored by our waiter, my friend helped himself to some menus. After some time, the waiter realized that we helped ourselves and came over to take our order. He was not helpful at all. We asked what was on the buffet (there were no hot tables on around or buffet menu) and was met with a short blurb of salad, pakoras and other inaudible items. We opted out of the buffet and browsed the menu quickly. At that time, the waiter said he would give us a minute and come back. Another 15 min time passed (almost 30 min accumulative minutes without any decent service) our waiter managed to serve food(5 return trips) to the table next to use without an acknowledgment he would take his order. Finally after our waiter cut thru my personal space to drop an order to the table next to us, I casually mentioned to my friend, "seems like no one was interested in serving us" (3 people on the floor with less then 10 tables dining). The waiter and i locked eyes and he turned around smirked and left. At that point I felt well disrespected and left. Both my Friend and I both came from the restaurant industry and understand that lunch service can be hectic. People are typically in a rush to get back to the office and don't have much time. The restaurant was at 1/4 capacity with 3 staff on the floor, with not more then 10 tables occupied. That's 3.33 tables per person. Not a difficult task to provide service. It wouldn't be so bad if we were treated with a shed of respect. We are pretty rational, understanding people and like to pay it forward to hard working individuals in the food service industry. Its a shame we did get to try the food. The photos looks good. On the positive we ended up going to Tastee's and enjoying Ox Tail. Please be aware there are better options in the area if you can't wait for sub standard service. read more

I wish I could give zero or negative .. I am currently sitting having spent a very poor Valentine's day at Dum Pukht. We always expected slow service but today was just atrocious all throughout. First inkling of food came 1 hour after and we had 3 servers asking if we had ordered before that. No plates when main course came. A family behind us was making most of the poor service by mocking them and then they got the wrong order after 90 mins to replace with another wrong one. Mutton biryani was replaced with chicken curry and upon correction we got chicken biryani. No one bothered to come and ask us and to boot we had a 2.5 year old toddler who they gave a damn about. A friend and I went for dinner. He ordered the Dum Biryani and I had the Lamb dish. Both of them were delicious. The place was empty. But, it was Monday. The service needs improvement. We have seen the reviews and pictures on yelp and decided to go and eat food here. Food has good quality and taste. We liked the ambiance but service is not good. No server assigned to table and every time you need something then you have to look for different person. Overall I liked the food but it takes forever to get food to your table. At least give 40-50 minutes after your order to get the food. Also, when you need to pay still need to wait for 10 minutes for some different person to come to your table. When we asked to pack our food then server told us to give him a minute but he came back after 10 min. I really like dum pukh mutton and dum pukh chicken biryani. We went for a dinner on Sep 9th - having been there 6 times before, we had great expectations from this place. This time around, we were extremely disappointed. Half empty restaurant on a Saturday night should have been our first hint. The service was really slow and at times food was served but no plates or utensils. The owner said 2 of his chefs did not show up that day. If an institution cannot manage this type of issues, I don't think it deserves to be in this business. I would give this place a 6.5/10. The food was actually good, however, the service could use some improvement. We wanted to order take out for the office, and right off the bat we knew service was definitely compromised, but we had already made plans for the entire office. We called in 8 times however nobody picked up our calls, we had to drive to place our order and go back for pickup as it took some time to prepare. Upon arrival nobody greeted us, and we struggled to find the desk/help. Mind you, one of the guys was serving the table beside us, saw us looking for help yet said nothing. We helped ourselves by looking around and finally placed our order, I asked why nobody answers the calls, the guy pointed to the guests and said "we're busy", I guess they don't care for customers unless they are dining in. Anyways, we noticed only 2 waiters in a place full of people, clearly they need more help and customer service skills, not once did they smile or say thank you/please. We picked up our food, the guy didn't even give us the change, I guess he assumed he deserved the tip, though not much. Luckily the food was good, otherwise I'd never recommend it. If you don't care for good service, I would def recommend this place, otherwise save yourself the disappointment and go elsewhere. read more

The Ambience & food is pretty good; however, at no point in time did we have 1 dedicated server attending to us. We were celebrating my Mom in laws Birthday and the same was mentioned while making the reservation- however, there was not only no acknowledgement made but also, the service wasnt done in a manner to be making her feel special. We had to keep looking for someones attention as we didnt know who was the 1 person attending to us to help us guide on the menu & portion sizes. At the end of the meal, we had to request for our remaining food (Biryani, Lamd Rarra & Naan) to be packed up (as take out) which was conveniently forgotten. This was still ok as we didnt want to create any issues so I went back to enquire about the food & pick up. The worst experience I've had at any establishment. Not only did we have to wait to be seating without being acknowledged for 10 minutes. We were told we wouldn't get service for another 15 to 20 minutes. Looking past that we stayed. After finally order 30 minutes later, we waiting to be served food for over an our. We had to ask for papad as we were literally sitting there twiddling our thumbs. After asking staff members a status of our food we were told 5 minutes multiple times. The food here is OK. I think it's worth it to go once for the house speciality, Dum Pukht, which is a bowl of curry with a lid made of bread that is finished in the tandoor oven. We also tried the butter chicken which was a disappointment. The tandoori mushrooms and lamb rogan josh were both good, the biryani was passable. If I was just reviewing the food, I probably would have given this place 3 or 4 stars, but the service on our second visit was disappointing. They mixed up a number of things in our order. I think the worst thing is that they forgot to put in the entrée order for one of our party. She waited about twenty minutes after everyone else received their food before asking where her meal was. They brought her something she hadn't ordered and tried to pretend that it was what she had ordered. When she pointed this out to them, they said that the dish she had ordered would take an additional fifteen minutes to make and she should just accept the alternative dish. She did insist that she wanted the dish she ordered and they eventually brought it out after everyone else was done and she had waited more than half an hour. When the bills came, the price of one of the dishes was higher than it had been on the menu. We were told that this was because the menu had been misprinted. After arguing with them, they agreed to honour the menu price. The service on our first visit was OK so it's possible that the second visit was a bit of an anomaly. A lot of effort has been put into the interior design of the restaurant. I thought it was a bit too flashy but some of my friends liked it. read more

Terrible experience as the owner kept falsifying the wait time for us...it started with a 20 minute wait. He likes to sweet talk you into staying dating just a few more minutes. Our 20 minute wait ended up being over an hour as ke INSISTED there would be table free very soon. Keeps you in an uncomfortable position of should you Stay or leave? If there isn't space don't lie to to the customers to make more money, tell them you are sorry but there just isn't space so we don't waste our time waiting around. When another waiter who was trying to help us said there is table clearing in 5 mins, the owner said something to him and he came back and told us sorry the table is gone. He must have given it to someone else knowing we have been waiting an hour. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. He still insisted we wait..what a ridiculous restaurant. There were alot of other people he was letting in knowing quite well there isn't seating and these groups of people were just waiting in every corner of the restaurant basically. Came for my sister's birthday and didn't know that it would be busy, so when we got to the restaurant the owner told us it would be a wait of 25 minutes. We decided we were going to go somewhere else as no one had ate and were starving. The owner then told us don't worry it would be 25 mins and by the time we went somewhere else it would have taken just as long, so we decided to wait. No one gave us updates except for a nice waiter who told us he had seen us waiting and to move to the bar so he would be able to see us and seat us right away. We decided to move and wait there. By this time it had already been 30 minutes. During that time we asked the woman who was working at the front (his daughter) how much longer and they said give them 10 more minutes. The owner said we're not going to let you go without eating, we nicely noded. The same waiter who talked to us earlier told us he was trying to get a table cleared. Finally we were at 1hr 5 minutes and we decided we wanted to leave. The waiter said a table may be clearing if we wanted to wait, he could seat us in 10 more minutes. We decided to stay as we had already waited. I had seen the owner at that table with our server and the server has pointed to us implying we had been waiting and he was going to seat us. The man then came to us and instead of taking us to the table he apologized and said I'm sorry the table has been given away. We immediately left. I can't believe how greedy the owner was lying to us (and many others) about the wait and then giving away the table to someone else (perhaps someone he knew). His behaviour was extremely unprofessional and honestly rude. I understand there can be a wait but to grossly misrepresent how long it would be to get more business and then to give our table away to someone else is wrong. Basically our whole night was ruined and no one was in the mood to go out after that. We will not be returning and will let others know about our experience here. read more
