A higher scale India restaurant in Markham. This spot has been here for a long time and I can't believe it took me so long to come try it! Upon arriving, the first thing I notice is how dark the restaurant is. Tbh, I think a little too dark for my liking. Food took a looong time to come out but redeemed itself with it's taste and quality! Here's what we got for a party of 4: Chat Papri 5/5 - I might be bias cause I love chat. These were little pockets of crispy wafers topped with chickpeas, diced potatoes and yogurt sauce. It came with 2 sauces to pour into the chat which were mint and tamarind sauce. Loved this! It was a flavour burst in your mouth! Butter Chicken 5/5 - Chicken breast marinated overnight with yogurt and spices. Loved the cream butter tomatoey sauce and paired perfectly with the garlic naan. Can't wait to have this again. Dum-Phukht Biryani 4/5 - This came beautifully presented and opened table side. Thought there was a lot of chicken in there which was nice! Rogan Josh 5/5 - This was hearty and delicious with the lamb. Slow simmered in a rich spiced gravy sauce. Definitely would get this again! Flavourful and spicy. Mixed grill 5/5 - Thought this was a nice mix of meats to share with the table. Came on a grilled platter. Overall, great dining experience and food was fantastic. I passed by this place for many years and never came! This time a friend brought me here and I had a great experience. The restaurant opens until 5:30am! It is fairly spacious with lots of tables and booths. I was told there was a banquet space you can book For special occasions too. The staff was very helpful and kind. We ordered some vegetarian and chicken appetizers , and variety of main courses like buttery chicken, paneer, goat, chicken Britannia and cool desserts. The staff explained the meaning of "Dum Pukht". Which is a way of cooking the Briyanni... slow cook in fire. The flavours were good. My kids loved the garlic naan, which was really garlicky! I was talking to the owners of ZeeV's Nutrition nearly two months ago. I asked them what their favourite Indian restaurant was. They said Dum Pukht in Markham. You know what's humourous? I knew where this eatery was. However, I never paid much attention to it because Tiny Tom Donuts is next door to it and tiny donuts have a special place in my heart. The name. They pronounce it properly and don't end up cursing the world. I can see making it a swearing event when you're tipsy. I decided to take their advice and ordered takeout for dinner here at the end of August. Geez, I am so behind with my reviews! I ordered through Skip the Dishes. There was a deal to get free creamy tomato soup when you spend $35 or more. Yes, please! I ordered the following items to get the free soup: - Chicken seekh kebab - Garlic naan - Chilli chicken with sauce It didn't take too long for my order to be completed. I was getting bubble tea, so I timed coming over to this restaurant nicely. There is plenty of parking around the eatery. I backed in to a spot and walked over. The restaurant is gorgeous inside. The bar looked nice with the blue lighting. A man at the eatery greeted me. I said that I was picking up a Skip the Dishes order. He asked for the order number. I provided it. My order was sitting on the bar table's counter. He fetched it and handed it over to me. I thanked him and happily left with my food. I got home and chowed down. I started with the creamy tomato soup. It was delicious. It had a touch of cream in it. It was creamy, bright, and bursting with tomato flavour. It had spices in it that I loved. I'd get this soup alone because it was that good. I am a sucker when it comes to seeing chilli chicken on the menu. I really shouldn't get it at a non-Hakka establishment. This version had bell peppers in it. I don't enjoy them in chilli chicken. I like onions, chilli, garlic, and chicken in this dish. That's it. Don't fancy it up by adding more produce. It also was an Indian-style version. It was okay, but not my cup of tea or bowl of spicy comfort food. The chicken seekh kebabs were outstanding. Each kebab was flavourful and juicy. I loved them. I got garlic naan, which paired perfectly with the kebabs. The garlic naan is a must. It's divine and heavenly. The garlic is the right amount for this garlic lover. I could eat this naan all day and not have any friends sit next to me due to my garlicky breath. It was excellent! The catch here is to order items that they specialize in and are authentic. This place has the best briyani I've ever had. Of course, it's also probably the most expensive briyani I've ever had, but you can't have everything. The dum-pukht chicken briyani was very good: very flavourful, with complex flavours. It was also very moist because of the dough sealing the pot. The dough was plain, but there were many big pieces of boneless chicken inside. We ordered lunch from here and it was great! We ordered the chicken biryani, butter chicken, chicken vandaloo, tandoori chicken, and curd. It was packed very nicely and clean so nothing would spill over. I found it really cool how the biryani was packed and secured. It is on the spicy end so I do want to caution people who can't handle spice to maybe communicate that when ordering. I will definitely try coming into the restaurant to eat next time! 3/5 is an aggregate score. I will split this review into 2 parts to be more accurate. 1) Taste - The food was tasty. The masala spice mix was layered and complex. So in terms of taste, I will score the meal 4/5. Had the goat been more tender, and the biryani a bit less soggy, I would have scored 5/5. 2) Value for money - 2.5/5. The portions were small for the amount I paid - $63 & change for just TWO item: 1 biryani & 1 curry. I was tempted to try the naan, but it was $6 a piece, which was ridiculous by any standard. $6 can buy an entire loaf of artisanal bread! 3) Service - 3.5/5. I tipped 15%, even though I wanted to tip just 10. The waiter was courteous, but he spent the entire time looking at his phone. Sitting down in the naturally blue light and wood decorated restaurant the first thing you are greeted with is a big QR code printed on a piece of paper. There are paper menus but you have to ask them for it and it is assumed that everybody has a phone that can scan the QR code and knows that the QR code is the menu. The server was kind of nice and took our order quickly. Not much to complain about aside from the fact that we had to ask for water once. For appetizer we ordered the chicken pekora. It was delicious and served with a green salad dressing along with a sweet and sour sauce. Well fried hot tender topped with ground carom seeds. As for the entrees, I orderded the Dum Pukt Biryani as well as the mutton Dum Pukt. It was a served with a naan topping cover and baked hot. Once the shell was broken the aroma of the spices and lamb came through and made for a mouth watering experience. The biryani was nice. Had crispy rice on top as well as a nice meaty rice body with ample lamb. It's quite a lot of sharp tomato flavor in this dish but it also means that the umami(meaty flavour) is very prominent. People who order to this dish have to be aware that they have unpitted fruits contained within the biryani and if you bite into it without looking, you might bite into one of the seeds. As for the mutton, It was delicious with an onion gravy that was quite spicy and thick. The land was tender and it was well cooked. Unfortunately the naan had a few issues. The first naan we ate was slightly on the doughy side. Meaning that it was chewy when bit into. The second order of naan that we ordered was not as chewy but all the naan that we ordered had quite a large portion of it that was burnt black by the tandoor. The price of an individual naan was also quite high at $6 for a garlic naan and $5 for butter naan. The naans themselves aren't quite big one could feasibly eat two of them, which means that the total for starch would end up being around $10 on top of the entree Overall, I was a decent experience The price was quite higher than expected. Came here for dinner on a Saturday night without a reservation and was seated immediately. My go-to order is always the chicken tikka masala, which was cooked to perfection! The chicken was very tender mixed with some crisp veges which gave the dish some crunch. My bf ordered the lamb vindaloo which had a kick to it. Even though I normally can't handle too much spice, I couldn't stop eating it. The service here always exceeded my expectations. I ordered the sweet lassi, but the server accidentally gave me the mango lassi instead. I didn't really mind because I was ok with the mango anyways. The server later came by and gave me another sweet lassi on the house because he said he messed up my drink order. That's so considerate! This is my first visit to Dum Pukht. The greeter was very friendly and it is a restaurant that does both Hakka and Indian cuisine. The place is well adorned and looks quite modern. It is clean and the staff are knowledgeable. They offer foods from various parts of India, but today I decided to have the Lamb Roganjosh, and the Methi Mutter Malai. The server was able to show me what food I could eat safely as I have Celiac Disease and must eat gluten free. There were a lot of good options and I could choose freely from most of the main dishes. I was impressed with the facilities: it looked like there was plenty of room to have a small banquet, or to have big parties. I enjoyed the earthiness of the mutter, and the lamb was good with nice flavours and balance of fat and salt, but the lamb was a little dry. Don't judge this place from the exterior. Or by the name lol. I met a girlfriend here for dinner and was pleasantly surprised by the interior. It would be great for an anniversary or special night out. Even the bathrooms are gorgeous. The wait staff was attentive and friendly and I never found myself waiting to get their attention. As for the food, it was amazing. The Dum Pukht Biryani ( I chose lamb) was spiced perfectly, and the portion was enough to share with my gf. I also got the chicken methi. Also delicious. Each entree was approximately $20, but with the atmosphere and service and quality of food, felt worth. I forgot to mention the nan. Ordered yellow (lentil/ dhal soup (mulgatawny soup), half chicken tandoori, lamb dum biryani (cooked/covered with Chapati dough), garlic naan, and nice Tika masala curry for dipping. Everything was satisfying!! Tandoori chicken was moist, smoky, flavorful. Lentil soup was peppery, velvety, zesty, spicy and refreshing w/ the fresh cilantro. Lamb dum biryani was spectacular! It was buttery, spicy, sweet, robust, with delicate balance of the lamb aroma. As the server opened/cut the chapati and uncovered the rice underneath, the smoky aroma and steam was making your tastebud jitters. I could taste the cardamom, ginger, fried onions, cinnamon, black pepper and many other spices just tantalizing the tastebud. The only critique was that I expect the biryani to be a little spicier and a bit more salt. For my taste, everything was a bit sweet. I Dum Pukht up indeed (Pun credit to Kris U.) For some reason, I forgot that 1) Indian food is primarily spicy 2) My tolerance level of spice can be categorized as "really sad". It's like a slow burn that catches up to you and suddenly you realize you're sweaty and can't stop sniffling. Even then, I kept eating so the food must be pretty good. Between two people, we got the chicken sampler platter, the shrimp biryani, and a cheese naan. We also got a taste of the chicken pakora from our generous Yelp friends that shared their food. The standout to me was definitely the shrimp biryani, which is a bowl of fried rice and shrimp with a piece of naan baked on top. The flavours were very unique and something about the spice mix made it incredibly aromatic, it was almost flowery. The chicken sampler platter was tender and tasty as well and the chicken pakora is something I would definitely get again if I were to go to an Indian restaurant. The absolutely perfect way to cool down the spice was a mango lassi, which I thought was too sweet at first but it worked its magic when taken alongside the food. Two things were a bit of a miss for me, however. One, the service was quite slow. Though the servers were friendly, it was a good 45 minutes between ordering and eating. We also had to ask multiple times for certain things (e.g. plates, water, naan). Second, the naan on top of our biryani was very undercooked. It was pretty much a piece of soft dough with burnt edges. Other people that got the biryani didn't have this problem, so maybe it was just a one-time thing. I think that this is definitely one of the nicer options for Indian food in the GTA. Came here again a year later cause I was craving for their biryani. However this time around sort of disappointed me! I find the food quality has been downgraded from my previous visit. And not only that, they've increased the price as well. It was definitely not worth the $20 for the biryani. Furthermore, food took almost 30 mins to come which was unexpectedly slow considering that only 15% of the dining room was filled. Not degrading their customer service as it's still top notch and attentive. But taking 30+ mins to cook something that came out not too hot makes me question what took them that long... Dum Pukht is a gem in the middle of Markham. I stayed nearby for a work trip and thought I would be eating room service for the whole week. Thankfully Dum Pukht was nearby and saved me. This is an Indo - Chinese restaurant which is exactly as it sounds, most dishes are North Indian or an Indian Chinese fusion. I was basic and got the chicken tikka masala with garlic naan and jeera rice. It was wonderful! The naan was plentiful and they make it from scratch on site. The chicken tikka masala was full of flavor and not too spicy (you can ask to make it spicier) and the rice was large enough to feed a small family. Service was very attentive and the restaurant's interior is beautiful. They end the meal with a heated towel. Only taking one star off because most of the entrees come without naan or rice so you have to order it on the side. That being said my one meal lasted for two additional meals which was great. I am so glad to find such an extraordinary place near home to get Indian food. One of my favourite cuisines is Indian... and this place makes delish food! My family and I ordered: mutton biryani, shrimp briyani, butter chicken, rogan josh (lamb), chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, and the mint chicken (I can't remember the exact name). But everything was delicious. We devoured Everything in 15 mins. The only reason I give this place 4 instead of 5 stars is because the papadom they gave at the start to eat (complimentary) was cold, dry and salty. Also they place their glasses and two chutney sauces outside before you're seated. And the glasses were dusty (we had to request them to change it) and one of the sauces they had outside had a fly in it -- I asked the waiter to change this to a new one. And the manager came out an apologized and added us complimentary glubjman as desert. Service was really good in that aspect. All in all I will be back to satisfy my Indian cravings! My friends and I came here to celebrate the birthday of a dear friend. We were hoping for good food, good service, and a clean, friendly environment. We were not disappointed. Everything was better than we had hoped for! The decor and lighting provided a sophisticated environment. We had a booth that made it a little more intimate for our celebration. The food was excellent! In addition to our favourite Indian dishes, we trusted our server's recommendations and enjoyed every bite! The Tandoori Mixed Grill and Mix Chicken Sampler arrived on hot sizzling plates and provided a good variety of chicken, lamb, and paneer. The Chicken Biryani was presented in a hot pot with a layer of dough covering it. The dough was cut open at the table by our server - a very unique presentation. The Channa Masala was a bit spicy for some of us but also very delicious. All the dishes, from appetizers to desserts, were very tasty! We met the friendly owner on our way out and he proudly showed us his new banquet hall next door, opening tomorrow for Mothers Day. The decor and lighting were very modern and sophisticated. Just Pukht it and come here for your meal. Located in Markham you know you have found a good spot when you hop out of your car and can smell the delicious curry from the parking lot. My mouth was watering even before I stepped in the restaurant. It's a pretty big restaurant and decor is tasteful (not cheesy at all like how some Indian restaurants can be). You can also see the chefs cooking in the kitchen b/c it's a glass wall separating the kitchen and the dining room. You can watch them make skewers and see how the tandoor works. Also, everything is made to order - fresh. They don't make the food before hand and just heat up - this is evident by watching the chef's make your meal before your eyes. Of course this means that the time from when you order to when you get your food takes awhile...but I don't mind if things are made fresh. We ordered a bunch of different items for our group - mango salad; aloo gobi; garlic naan; lamb skewers; the dum phukt chicken special and rice pulao. Yum, yum and YUM! The mango salad offered a sweet cool flavour to some of the hotter dishes. The aloo gobi was a nice side and the chicken special was spicy but not burn out your mouth spicy. Tender pieces of chicken in curry....eatne with the rice or naan, it was just delicious. It comes looking like chicken pot pie (the best way I can explain it) - the chicken was inside a naan bowl almost. Everything was delicious. I am not a big fan of Indian food. The only places I've been to are the AYCE ones and I only ever have the Naan Bread and Butter Chicken. I was apprehensive about going to Dum Pukht at first, but after my visit, I am very glad I went. Food was exceptional. Staff were super friendly and answered all our questions. The servings looked pretty small at first but it was extremely filling. If this is how Indian food tastes, I have clearly been missing out all these years. Slightly crispy and very fresh. Shahi Paneer/Fish Masala: Flavour was excellent. A little bit on the spicy side, which we both like. Both items were missing a little bit of salt. The other complaint (which I do not really blame the chef as we showed up late) is that I wish he would have cooked the dishes just a slightly longer as you can still feel the rawness of the spice. This is almost like my go to restaurant when I crave for Indian food in Markham. I keep coming back for the fish masala and introduced it to my brother. He agreed that it was tasty too. The level of spice is just right and the sauce was nicely done. We ordered the curry lobster, I find that a little too dry. The Papadum were so fresh and they have different flavoured naan such as garlic, butter, they were all tasty. The restaurant was pretty empty but my friend said people usually came a bit later for dinner, and she wasn't lying. By the time we left, there were several tables just getting set up/receiving their foods. We ordered biryani and tandoori chicken. Our server opened our biryani once it arrived to the table. The chicken was juicy and hearing it "sizzle" on the plate made my mouth water! We also had crispy papadum on the side. I have been here a couple of times after we were turned away, but they have made up for it. If youre looking for biryani this is the place to be! The food has been consistently good, the biryani here is the best and most unique biryani in gta. Their naans (specially garlic) are amazing and their butter chicken is quite good too. The service, while a little on the slow side, has been very friendly and geniunely caring. We came as a big family group to break our fast and have dinner, we needed a room to pray and they literally gave us access to their whole banquet hall, also gave us some mats and stuff to use. When we came back to eating, the owner sent us some extra garlic naan on the house, we didn't even ask him for more naans! It was a busy Saturday night but the waiter got us a seat under 10 mins which was great as we were a small party of 3. We ordered lamb seekh kebab, lamb biryani which comes un a pot wrapped in naan that when peeled away was simply aromatic heaven. Chicken tikka masala was a little thick not saucey that would allow for great naan dipping but still tasted great. Tandoori mushrooms were amazing! We ordered my favorite saag paneer, butter chicken, chicken biriyani, and some naan (regular and garlic). The saag paneer was super bland. Definitely would not reorder again. Butter chicken was really good I thought. It had some spices in it that I'm not used to tasting in butter chicken. I have some friends that have tried the butter chicken from here before, but they're not a fan. To each their own I guess. The chicken biriyani was good, had nice spices, but it was literally just rice. I think there were 5 really small cubes of chicken, that was it. The naan was nothing special. I think though if I had it fresh, and not steaming in tin foil for the drive home, it would have been better. I wonder if they have buffet lunch, I would definitely be interested in giving their other dishes a try. read more
