Indian food on main street unionville, feels a bit upscale, but also starting to look a little run down. The layout of the restaruant feels a bit weird making it hard to flag down waiters or for them to see us. Luckly we came late (830pm) on a week day so the waiters to patron ratio was better. Dhal curry - Enjoyed this curry very much. It was creamy and had a good mouthfeel to the curry. Would recommend to try. Garlic naan - The aroma of garlic was strong, but not much garlic flavour. The curry easily overpowered the garlic flavour. the Naan bread it self was delightful, light and fluffy but with some crispy edges and slight sweetness. Would just recommend getting the butter naan. Lamb Biryani - One of my go-to dishes in indian restos. Rice was nice and fluffy, flavour was well balanced. the lamb was cooked very well and was boneless. It was a bit spicy, but the yogurt help balance that out. Would defintely get again!

Ugh... such a frustrating review to write because this resto could've EASILY been a 4 or 5 star experience. Located on main street unionville, this resto has been around for awhile, outlasting many businesses along main st that have come and gone. You can find parking in the back or at the curling club nearby. I came w/ my gf for dinner on a sunday. The aromas are amazing as you hover around the outside patio, you get a good waft of the curries being cooked in the kitchen. We waited at the podium out front for about a good 5-7 min before being acknowledged (while servers kept glancing at us). We ordered the seasonal special which was a 3 course dinner for 2. It included the chef's daily appetizer, 2 mains, 2 rice or naan (we got 1 rice and 1 naan) and also a choice of dessert b/w gulab jamun and kulfi. Beef samosas: The chef's daily appetizer of the day was aloo tikki which was roasted potato cakes. The server told us we could pick a substitute from the menu which was around the same price as the aloo tikki so we settled on some beef samosas. The samosas were great. Perfectly crispy, packed w/ filling and not dry. They also came with 2 dips. A green, yogurty, minty chutney and some sort of brown, sweet and spicy chutney. My gf and I were wondering if these were baked and not deep fried. Because it had that baked texture going on. Basmati rice: The rice was moist, not dry and flavoured w/ saffron. Fluffy and well seasoned. Garlic naan: We had a choice of plain, butter or garlic naan. We chose garlic naan and it did not disappoint. The bread was so fluffy, incredible garlic flavour and so soft. Butter chicken: So we actually ordered chicken tikka masala but the funny story is, they gave us another table's butter chicken and gave that table our tikka masala later. The butter chicken itself was great. The curry was creamy, complex and had so many spices in it. They used breast meat cubes rather than dark meat but the chicken was tender. Chicken korma: It's similar to butter chicken in that it's a curry but made from cashew nut paste and cream. I REALLY, really liked this dish but it arrived 20 min later than the rest of our food. We ordered an extra serving of garlic naan to mop up all of that curry goodness. Kulfi: For dessert we had a choice of kulfi or gulab jamun. We had both never tried kulfi before so we ordered up some pistachio kulfi. It reminded us of a very rock solid indian ice cream lol. We really enjoyed it though. That nutty flavour to end off a heavily seasoned meal. So you're wondering, why am I awarding 3 stars (I would give 3.5 stars but yelp doesn't permit half stars ... and normally I'd round up but in this case I just couldn't) if the food was bomb? Well, that would be the service and the price. From the get go, after being seated inside the resto, it was very apparent to us that the resto was understaffed. The patio seating is larger than the indoor seating and most of the staff are being stretched out way further than they need to be. The bar was literally being manned by different servers like 5 min after each other (no designated bartender) and our server (he was a nice gentleman) was running around so much we rarely saw him. At certain points we had to ask other servers (and even a busboy/volunteer at one point) for things/follow-ups. I do understand that there's a labour shortage in the service industry right now. But when there's corners of the resto being untouched by service, that needs to be addressed. My other gripe is that this resto is on the expensive side for indian food. There are a lot of spots in markham or scarborough that might not have an upscale resto vibe but serve quality food at a fraction of the price. On top of that, the portions could've been slightly bigger for the price that was being charged. They came out on the small, round silver trays. I did give a good tip at the end of the meal because we were given 10% off but for the totality of this review I can't give the resto 4 or 5 stars, which is a shame really. The food was really excellent but the service was driving my gf and I impatient by the end of the night. It was hard to flag someone down to even get our bill and that's not an exaggeration lol. Would I return? I think I will, but I'll be apprehensive. The patio seemed well-serviced so maybe that's where I'll request to be seated next time. And maybe I'll bring a larger group of friends which might "improve" service as well.

Came for their lunch special and got the butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. Both tasted pretty good. Their naan was also not bad. Restaurants interior was a bit old school and service was okay.

Came here for dinner on Father's Day. We got the Lamb Kebab, Lamb Roganjosh and a side of naan to share. The naan was super soft and buttery, it was a great compliment to the roganjosh curry. The curry was flavourful and the kebab was juicy and tender. I really enjoyed all the dishes. The restaurant had lots of seating and the waiters are friendly. Great place to visit for Indian food!

Taking a stroll in unionville, we got hungry and opted to try this place since it's one of two restaurants in the area that I haven't tried. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't very busy and we got a table right away. The host/server took us to our table of choice and so far so good till we asked about what he would recommend to us. He didn't seem adept at answering these questions. In comes another older man, a server as well, and we tried to ask him for recommendations for ordering something we could eat with our baby. The man seemed very short tempered and impatient at the impertinent questions we were asking and basically said there is nothing in the menu kid friendly except French fries and that everything is spicy. He seemed visibly unhappy at all the questions we were asking so I asked him to give us a minute to discuss. A handful of times while waiting he came over to ask if we are ready or order yet, despite having a visual of our table and seeing that we were busy dealing with baby. I honestly got the impression that he was annoyed at having to deal with us probably because of the baby. I ended up ordering a channa masala, vegetarian somosas (which were not spicy! So there goes the whole "everything is spicy" claim) and two orders of the naan. This guy just seemed so annoyed by us that when I ordered he asked me "what about rice. Don't you want any rice?" I told him no and he looked annoyed again. Maybe he thought we were too cheap ordering so little but given the lack of guidance from him, I ordered what I knew we could eat with baby. I wasn't taking any chances. The food was tasty but the portions were very small and the price tag for only those items that we ordered was $50 plus tips. I think the lack of service influenced my score because upscale service is what commands upscale pricing. Although the food was very tasty, the price appears disproportionately high due to the lack of service. Perhaps if I had had a more customer service minded server, someone who took pride in showcasing the cuisine of the place and cater to the client I would have felt the value for money. Sadly, I didn't and that's why I am giving them a low score.

Ambiyan Equals Ambiance !! I have been to this Indian-style restaurant several times over the years for a drink and a meal. On this visit I decided to bring the kids along as they hadn't had good Indian food in a long time and finally it seems like we were at the time getting a little break from Uber-Eats, dining at home and always getting take-out food. This restaurant is located on the middle of the Main Street Unionville strip and has been a staple of Main Street Unionville for years. Did you know Ambiyan also doubles as a pub? One side of the restaurant is dedicated to the pub and it has its own pub menu. Since this was a family visit we ate the food from the main restaurant. We were seated just under the roof attached to Ambiyan and were under a see-through vinyl which allowed us to catch a good breeze and protected us from the elements. In the fall and winter, this section is heated. We were seated and our server came to greet us almost immediately. he took the time to explain the food to my kids and started them off with Mango Lassies and an order of Cheesy Naan. The kids ate the Naan so fast I wan't able to take a picture of it. Our food for that night, Cheese Naan - With mozzarella and cheddar cheese duo - Gone in seconds Chicken Kebab - Baked skewers of minced chicken seasoned with garlic and spices - A little spice but okay for kids when they eat it with the yogurt Lamb Kebab - Baked skewers of ground lamb meat seasoned with garlic and spices - A little spicer then the Chicken but no problem, I selfishly ordered them for me. Tandoori Prawns - Tiger Prawns Marinated in Tandoori Spices and slow baked. - An abolute delight Butter Chicken - Classic, plaentiful and flavourful Lamb Korma - Came in a rich and creamy cashew sauce Vegetable Biryani - Made with spices and basmati rice, and packed with flavour Sides - Raita which is made with a natural yogurt with coriander, tomato and onion. My only disappoitment was that they didn't offer Kingfisher, an Indian Beer which I can find at many Indian restaurants in the GTA. In all the food was amazing and the kids enjoyed as much as the adults did. Our server was great and very patient with kids and helped them enjoy their meal and also challenged them a little to try some of the more spicier dishes. Another great meal at one of Unionville's most popular restaurants. If you haven't been there, I do recommend you give it a shot.

If you're looking for a place to dine in Main Street Unionville, you should give Ambiyan a try! We had just finished a morning stroll in TooGood Pond park nearby and we were extremely hungry. We tried going to Next Door restaurant which is usually our go to place in this area but they were full and noticed this Indian restaurant with a very nice patio so we decided to give it a try. We don't usually pick Indian food because my husband can't handle spicy food but I figured there must be something non spicy. We asked the server which chicken dish was least spicy and she recommended chicken korma which is tender chicken meats braised in a thick sauce that wasn't spicy but very flavourful. My husband really liked it. It's so good with naan bread which is extra for $4. We will definitely be ordering this again. We also got the chicken Briyani which was also very good. The portions were quite big so the two dishes plus shrimp pakora appetizer were enough for the 3 of us to share. The lunch menu had a good selection that I think is similar to the dinner menu and the only difference for lunch was some discounted items like Briyani and mains. This is a great area to spend the day with a walk in the park, follow by lunch, then shopping, and relax at a coffee/tea shop or dessert/ice cream shop. There was even live music on the recent Sunday we visited. Highly recommended!

Enjoyed a delicious meal tonight with great, friendly service and a good ambiance! Will definitely come back when we're in Toronto. Enjoyed Baigan Bhartha, Chicken Tikka Masala, Saag Paneer and my husband's special request for spicy vindaloo aloo curry. Naan was soft and flavorful. Great dining experience!

I've been to Ambiyan a couple of times in the last few months, and I've had an overall good experience both times. The first time I went, we ordered the chicken chettinad, which is not a chicken dish I normally order, however it was tasty and I enjoyed it. We also ordered the vegetable biryani which was very good and the portion was very generous. But I have to say my absolute favourite part of the meal was the garlic naan, it was so soft, doughy and buttery, definitely one of the best I've had! The second time around, we ordered chana masala, saag paneer, baigan bharta, and daal malkani. The chana was delicious and cooked very well, and I also loved the baigan bharta; those were probably my favourites. I enjoyed the other vegetarian dishes as well. The biggest disappointment for me was their butter chicken. WAY TOO sweet and sugary for my liking. If you don't like sweet Indian dishes, I highly recommend you do not order this butter chicken. I also ordered the rice with peas, which I was a little bit disappointed with as well because the peas were very undercooked. To end on a high note however, the garlic naan was just as delicious and fluffy as the last time. Overall not the best Indian food I've ever had, but still pretty good!

Service 4.5 Food 3.5 Ambiance 4.0 Between 2 people our meal consisted of veggie paneer biriyani, butter naan, a chicken vindaloo, and 2 beers on tap. The meals don't come with rice, so we decided on a biriyani, and it was probably my best decision of the day, we even walked away with a small take away container. For the price we paid for the food, I think it was either too hard (naan) or too sweet (vindaloo) for my liking, comparing it with many other Indian restaurants I've tried at Etobicoke and Mississauga. If you'd like ambience and celebration, this could be your spot. But if you're looking for authentic quality food, I'd save my trip for another Indian restaurant.

Love this place, we come back once a year when we need our fix on indian food since it's the only decent indian restaurant within a 10-minute drive from us. Service is great, but everything feels very fast-paced in here. The plates and cutlery were on our table as soon as we ordered our first drink. And after ordering the food it came out straight away. Which perhaps is what some people like! As for the food, the lamb roganjosh is our favourite as well as the eggplant bharta. Aloo gobi was a dissapointment - it was literally 3 giant pieces of cauliflower and 2 giant pieces of potatoes. We had to cut up everything ourselves so everyone could get some of each. Nothing came very hot, it was all lukewarm. I assume every curry they make is ready in a pot to be served into dishes, but they could do with trying to keep it all nice and hot. It's a very average but reliable Indian restaurant if you're really craving Indian. Just a heads up, they won't accept the 10% off coupon on yelp - it's invalid

Before East Asia decided to invade Main Street Unionville, a small part of South Asia had quietly moved in and taken up residence. Years later, as the restaurant landscape ebbed and flowed on the street, Ambiyan still confidently stood its ground, luring passerbys with spicy aromas. Oh yeah, it's expensive. There's no doubt about that. $19 for entrees that come out as little silver bowls filled with saucy meats. But if you don't think those saucy meats will fill you up, you're wrong. I've tried the butter chicken, chicken tikka masala (curry yogurt sauce) and lamb saag (boiled seasoned spinach). All were fantastic. I alternated between shoving more in my mouth because it was so delicious and taking a long break because my tongue was on fire. Extra $5 for rice or naan, which might be a rip off but damn it, you will absolutely need those overpriced carbs. Seriously, you can't just eat the entrees by themselves, they're practically spicy sauces. No wonder lassi drinks were invented. Nothing kills the burn better. On top of the fiery main dishes, they serve a range of appetizers. I personally think the spinach pakoras are delightful. Yes, there may be better, cheaper, more authentic Indian food out there. I wouldn't know, I'm a noob. But there sure is something special about walking into this beautiful restaurant, looking out onto scenic Main Street, and enjoying some delicious curry. Walk by Ambiyan and take a whiff. That's the smell of amazing food...and the American dream (Okay, Canadian). (13/100) - 2018

I stepped in here just to have a light snack on a beautiful sunny weekend day. The patio was open and I had a nice taste of one of their appetizers! (Food:) VEGETARIAN SAMOSAS: Oooo I've really come to love samosas ever since one of my colleagues brought them to work! And these ones were great! WIth potatoes and peas on the inside, they were arranged artistically, but having each half split open and having a green/brown sauce on the side. (Price:) VEGETARIAN SAMOSAS: $7 I think my Tamil friend would say that that's too much for a samosa, but I don't eat a lot of Indian food anyways haha. (Ambience:) I didn't even step inside, but the patio was nice. (Service:) Fine. (Overall:) I liked it! Vege samosas are the best!

The sides, which included choices such as chickpea salad, kale ceasar, spicy eggplant, and broccoli pakora, looked fresh and were replenished often. The entrees included spicy beef vindaloo, butter chicken, and railway goat curry. Some vegetarian options were also available. The food was packaged into cardboard boxes (yay for less plastic in landfills!). My husband complained that his portion size for the beef vindaloo was on the smaller side, whereas I found portions for butter chicken to be fairly reasonable. There was certainly plenty of food. I was very happy to have come across this place in the food court, and it is a welcome addition. I thought $8 was a very good deal for the amount of food but I'm not sure how much my meal would cost outside of the special pricing for the grand opening. Nonetheless I would definitely consider adding Good Karma this to my rotation for go-to restaurants at the mall.

I won't lie, I was overwhelmed at first on what to pick, so I highly recommend going with a group so you can try a bit of everything. The portion sizes are great, we had so much leftover! The variety is so nice. Taste wise, every dish had my heart. It was all packed with flavour and tasted authentic. The stars for me were the Paneer Chettinad and Parotta with Kurma. Atmosphere -5/5 The interior of this place is insane! It feels like walking into an emperor's house! All the walls have paintings of hindu gods, and the restaurant is decorated so well. It's pretty big so perfect for smaller or larger groups. I'd try to get a reservation on busier nights. Service - 5/5 The staff is super helpful ! We asked a lot of question on what to order and they were so helpful. They would check in on us to, when it's super busy it happened less frequently but totally understandable. Will I go again? Of Course! I think it's going to be my go to Indian veggie place! Lash's Recommendations -Paneer Chettinad -Paper Masala Dosa -Parottta with Kurma
