Whipped ricotta
Deanna D.

I've been dying to try this place for a really long time. It's a cozy spot with a really knowledgeable and fantastic staff. I appreciate the fact that because they locally source their ingredients, their menu changes a little more frequently than you would expect. The food itself tasted really nice. I especially enjoyed the whipped ricotta and it's toppings. You definitely get what you order in terms of the price. Would definitely love to go back again, especially in the summertime to see what their summer options are.

One of the better restaurants in Durham and it's fairly priced. The quality of the food is good and it's great service and they do change the menu often so it's worth going !!!

We came here for an anniversary date and had a really amazing time. The interior ambiance is classy and romantic, with a little candle sitting on our table. Although the menu isn't particularly large, it offers a wide variety so we had a difficult time deciding what to order. It also changes often so we would be interested to return in a few months and see the new menu items. We started with the Oysters which were great. With the mignonette and horseradish it offered a lot of interesting sensations while we ate it. My partner ordered the Ontario Veal T-Bone Steak. We were first impressed by the size of the steak, and then again by the taste and texture. It was cooked perfectly and we savoured every bite. We loved the green beans; they were fresh, crisp, and very flavourful. I ordered the Jumbo Tiger Shrimp, and I was shocked by just how jumbo they were. These were the biggest shrimp I have ever seen by a significant margin. I loved the rice, which offered a wide range of flavours with peppers, beans, and chickpeas. I had absolutely no complaints about the food here, I loved every bite. The service was a little bit slow, but I've got no issues with the chef taking their time when they make food this amazing. We'll be back here again for sure!

Truly my favourite restaurant in Whitby. Staff is great and the food is fantastic. Went for a few appetizers and cocktails tonight, and it was great.

My quest for discovering new places to eat in Durham brought me to KB. Their online menu looked interesting and their reviews were very good. We had a 9:30pm reservation for a late dinner and it was still busy when we arrived and waited about 10 minutes for our table. I got the impression that a lot of the diners were regular patrons. Our menu differed from the online version due to the ever-changing farm to table concept. We were looking forward to trying the Roasted Beef Marrow Bone and the Arancini but they weren't on the current menu. Our server recommended the Bruschetta, made with pear instead of tomatoes. It was a good start to our meal. For our entrees, we had a roasted pork loin and duck breast. Both dishes were absolutely full of flavour and delicious! The portions were good but I definitely would have eaten more. The presentation was also very attractive. Excellent food! For dessert, we chose the creme brulee but they were sold out. Darn. My companion ordered a cappuccino. Our server, who was very good throughout the evening, surprised us with two complimentary cappuccinos since some of the menu items that interested us were not available. That was a really nice gesture. That's service! We'll definitely be back to see what other farm fresh dishes are being served!

I had dinner here recently with my husband, a longtime friend (who now lives in Whitby) and her husband, and let me tell you, it was fantastic. KB uses local and sustainable ingredients. Their menu is very creative, and I was told it changes frequently. The food was phenomenal, the decor was cool and funky, and our server, Jo, was superb. After we were seated, Jo asked us if we had been there before. When we told her that my friend and her husband had been there many times before, but my husband and I had not, she started to tell us about the restaurant. When she discovered that we were from Ottawa, she told us a bit about Whitby and the history of the town. She was so friendly and a great server. I had the Wild Mushroom Tacos, which came with a side salad ($16). They were hands down the best vegetarian tacos I've ever had. The mushrooms were really meaty. They were very substantial and their flavour had a lot of depth. The tacos also had some sort of slaw in it with nuts, some pickled onions and topped with microgreens (sprouts). The flour tortilla was slightly crunchy on the outside but still somewhat soft on the inside. It held up well (I really don't like it when tacos get all soggy and fall apart). The side salad was mixed greens with cucumber and microgreens in a light vinaigrette dressing. It was simple, but delicious. My husband had the shrimp and grits ($14) with a side of fries ($4). He loved his meal. I got to try some of the grits and they were so smooth and creamy. The fries were also excellent. They had some Parmesan cheese on them which gave them a bit of a nippy kick. My friend had the Arancini Balls and a side of beets, while her husband had the Mixed Grill. I didn't try any of their food, but they really enjoyed their meal. If I lived in Whitby, I would go to KB all the time.

Burbs Bruschetta

My first Farm-to-Table restaurant that was highly recommended by a friend. Sometimes 'highly recommended' means 'if you don't go, I will drag you.' Well, FINE then. I headed there after work. Traffic was fabulous, as usual, so I was starving when I arrived and my mom was super impressed how late I was. Needless to say, an appetizer was in order! Burbs Bruschetta was our selection. Little cubes of sweet pear on a crunchy crostini topped with basil and garlic. I could've eaten 10 plates of these. The flavours were perfectly balanced and, not to mention, a great way to wake up those tastebuds! Our main courses consisted of Willowbrook Farms Porchetta and the Breast of Chicken. The chicken was proscuitto wrapped and pan roasted. My mom said it was seasoned so that it didn't even taste like chicken; she wasn't sure she was given the right dish! It was served on a bed of beans and jus. Her plate was promptly cleaned! 've heard so much about pork belly, that I couldn't resist. If you haven't had it before, it was daunting at first; the word 'belly' was a bit off-putting. It was so tender, so tasty, so juicy. I expected to enjoy it, but I didn't realize I'd like it THAT much! The pork was slow cooked and rolled with a healthy layer of fat. I'm one of those people that cuts the fat off everything, but I had to try it as it was intended and I'm glad I did. It actually had a pleasant texture. The meal was served with mixed veggies in a tomato based jus. Desssssserts! Since, I'm a bit of a crème brulee fanatic, I chose the Avocado Crème Brulee. I know you're thinking the same thing as I was, but I HAD to. My mom picked the Homemade Pecan Tart. The tart was topped with merengue and whipped cream. After my mom's first bite, she definitely caught the homemade taste; the pastry was just like Nan's! As for my dessert.....it was the most unique crème brulee experience of my life. I cracked the hard, sugar coating and went right for the custard. This was followed by immediate confusion; I literally tilted my head. Trying to taste the avocado was difficult at first and then there it was. Subtle, it gave the custard a smooth texture. It was delightful(not warmed though!). Luckily, my mom tried it and was also confused, so I knew it wasn't just me. :D The servers were great. Quick and knowledgeable, they were not afraid to joke with us. I think my favourite moment was when we asked the gentleman for the dessert menu and he said no and walked away, completely straight-faced. Cracked us up! We had a great experience at Kb and recommend anyone to go there for either a family gathering, drinks or date night. As a bonus, the menu changes all the time! You'll never be bored! Made it worth getting in traffic for!

I don't visit Whitby often. Usually I am here because my camera has some issue and I need to bring it in for factory warranty work. For every time I am in the neighbourhood, I always try to go to a "new" restaurant I never been with recommendation from my Yelp App. So that's how I ended up at KB. For lunch you can either order from the Main menu or their limited lunch menu with a sandwich for $12 or an entree for $15. Fried Chicken with Side Salad($15) - Nappa Cabbage-Apple Slaw/Sweet Chili Glaze/Toasted Almond Crispy Chicken is definitely my weakness. The dinner menu is really promising and I guess I need to come back again. KB also serves coffee from local coffee roaster Treblicock which is my favourite coffee beans supplier. So next time, I need to have a cocktail and a coffee to end my meal!

Chicken tacos. Do yourself a favour and do not order these.

I ate here a year ago and loved it, I couldn't wait to return. Unfortunately my meal didn't live up to my high expectations. I started with the grilled romaine salad, which consisted of one romaine heart with 3 blistered cherry tomatoes. On this visit there was very little dressing, all I could taste was the char from the grill. The romaine salad I ate here last year was significantly better with more flavour, interest, and a larger portion. My sister and I shared the grilled chicken tacos and braised beef ravioli for our main. The chicken tacos were a major let down. They were incredibly spicy and the chicken was rock hard, some pieces even burnt. The braised beef ravioli were flavourful and the beef was very tender. However, I found the whole dish to be one note in terms of flavour. The KB I experienced this time around was very different from last year. Perhaps a change in management or kitchen staff has led to lower quality food. I'd give KB one more chance before I write them off completely.

House made pickles, bone marrow, lobster Mac and cheese, rack of lamb and sirloin and pasta!

So we have been back since this my original review and the service team and culinary team just nailed it!! My cocktail still came in a wine glass with ice and was watered down but other than that, it was a fab evening. We will 100% be back!! ORIGINAL REVIEW: This was our first time to the restaurant and we went on Valentine's Day. Upon arrival (on the exact time of our 7:30pm reservation) we were told that our table would be a few minutes and to go to the bar to order a cocktail. Yes, this is an old technique by servers to drive up the bill but if I could suggest that they don't do this when there are clearly 5 tables of two set and ready on the floor and no line up at the door. I ordered a "Glamour Girl" cocktail at the bar "while we wait for our table" and it was just ok. Served in a wine glass with ice and a straw (one of my pet peeves) it was watered down and maybe better suited for a summer beverage on a patio. For starters we ordered the lobster Mac and cheese which was very tasty but came as an entree size (I recommend sharing this). The bone marrow which was good but under seasoned - a little salt on this dish would have elevated it to the next level. The toast points that accompanied it were done perfectly. We also shared the house pickles which consisted of beets, onions, pickle and carrots. The pickling flavours on this plate seemed to be quite basic. I probably wouldn't order this again. Entrees were sirloin and pasta (apologies, I can't remember the exact name of the dish) and it was quite good. The pasta was cooked to absolute perfection! If the culinary team is reading this may I suggest pairing these noodles with a braised meat and rich sauce on a future menu as it would be amazing!! The second entree was the rack of lamb which I ordered a glass of red wine with. Although there wasn't a lot of meat on the rack, the squash ravioli it came with was quite filling. There are a lot of flavours on this plate which I liked but might be too much for others (depending on your taste). Earlier in the evening while waiting at the bar, we heard a server talk to another guest about the delicious Butterscotch Torte so we knew that is what we wanted for dessert. However, when we tried to order it, we were told they had ran out. Again, it WAS Valentine's Day but it seemed a little early to run out of a dessert offering. So instead of each of us getting a dessert, my partner ordered a cafe late and we shared a creme brûlée. I do not like coffee, mocha or espresso flavours AT ALL so you can imagine my disappointment when I tried the creme brûlée and it was pure coffee flavour (although there was no indication of this on the menu or description from the server when we ordered it). Sadly, this was how my meal ended. Overall the meal and experience was "ok - good" and I will go back and try it again. I think there is room for some finessing within a few areas of the restaurant but like I said, I would go back and try a few more dishes and cocktails. Let me know what YOU think and if I should try something specific next time.

Too expensive for what you get. Also, the potatoes were served raw. Poor quality, too much boasting.

My friend -- a Christian, not even Jewish -- was meeting with a pastor for coffee. He was wearing an IDF jacket and a Star of David necklace while discussing a recent trip to Israel. No shouting. No confrontation. No disruption. Just coffee and conversation. An employee called Durham Regional Police. Officers showed up and told him his conversation was "offensive." When asked what was said that violated policy, no one could answer. No rule cited. No clear complaint identified. Just vague discomfort -- and removal. So what exactly triggered this escalation? Not behavior. Not threats. Not harassment. Symbols. And Israel. Calling the police on someone because others don't like what he's wearing or the country he's discussing is cowardly and discriminatory. Businesses don't get to selectively silence viewpoints they don't agree with. And weaponizing law enforcement to remove someone over perceived "offense" is an outrageous abuse of discretion. If Cork & Bean believes visible support for Israel warrants police involvement, they should say that publicly. If they don't, then they owe an immediate explanation and apology. Until management addresses this directly and transparently, this establishment does not deserve community support. Do better.

We decided to find a cafe and casually open our presents there. We both yanked out Google Maps on our phones. She had mentioned that she had been to a Cork & Bean in Peterborough and and liked it. I trusted her judgment and said yes. I indicated that we needed to go up and hang a left. She felt that it was the other way around -- down and hang a right. When it comes to directions, she has the better track record since we've known each other. However, she realized that she had read the map wrong and I was correct. It felt like a small triumph, but I'm not the type to rub it in. I'm not horrible at directions. She is better at it. We walked over to this cafe. It may have taken three minutes. We had to wait for the light to change, so we could have done it in two minutes. This cafe had all the windows and doors wide open. We walked in and found a table to plop our stuff down. We then headed over to the counter to check out what we'd like to drink. My friend ordered an iced coffee with oat beverage. We both liked that there were dairy alternatives. She's vegan. I'd prefer to go lactose-free. I saw a sign that said that there were seasonal flavours. I asked the helpful man at the counter if it applied to iced coffee. Yes, it did. He could make any drink seasonal. Nice! I got a large iced peppermint latte with oat beverage. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and tipped. All was great. My friend got her drink first. Moments later, mine was ready. I thanked the man and headed back to our table to join my friend. There was live music at this cafe. We were here on a Saturday evening. Jordins ID (no apostrophe to indicate possession, which seemed odd) was playing. She was great. It was nice to have her in the background as we chatted. My drink was awesome. It was cold. I liked the peppermint with the coffee. It worked out nicely. A customer had brought his dog in. This cafe is obviously pet-friendly. It was nice seeing other customers ask if they could pet the dog. The owner was nice and said yes. The dog seemed to enjoy the affection and attention. We had a nice time chatting a bunch more and opening our presents. It was the perfect place for what we wanted to do. The menu also has beer, cocktails, and more. I saw a bunch of desserts in the display case. Since we had already had dessert with our dinner, we skipped getting any food. This cafe is in downtown Oshawa. It's free street parking on weekends. I enjoyed hanging out at this cafe. It's a nice place to grab a drink and chat, while taking in some local, live music. It was perfect. (341)

We eventually found it. Upon arrival, the door swung open and struck a seated guest -- a sign of just how small the space is. The restaurant was full except for one four-top (clearly ours), and we stood awkwardly in the entrance -- which is essentially inside the dining room -- waiting to be acknowledged. When greeted, we were asked if we had a reservation. We said yes. "Table for eight?" we were asked, which felt impossible given the size of the room. We clarified four, and were pointed to the only open table. No name was requested; we realistically could have just walked in and taken it. The space is starkly lit with aggressive bright white lighting that feels more clinical than cozy. The artwork is interesting and gives a gallery-like feel -- it seems the restaurant is aiming for a downtown Toronto wine bar aesthetic, but it doesn't quite land. Our table was missing water glasses, and the stemware was mismatched -- not in an intentional, charming way, but more in a "we ran out" way. Once seated, we weren't acknowledged or offered water for nearly 20 minutes. Not rushing guests is one thing; leaving them feeling forgotten is another. When our server finally arrived, the service set the tone for the evening. One glass of water was poured before he realized another was missing. He disappeared, returned with a glass, inspected it mid-pour, then walked away again (dirty glass). After several more trips and long gaps, everyone eventually received water -- about 15 minutes later. He was polite and friendly, just clearly untrained. He shared that the owner is also the sommelier, cook, and server, and that he liked working there because he wasn't expected to know much about wine -- an interesting admission for a wine bar. The owner greeted us warmly but asked only one guest about wine preferences -- ironically the only non-wine drinker at the table. The concept appeared to be sommelier-led, though this was never explained. If that is the intention, engaging the entire table is essential. That said, the wines themselves were enjoyable; the service surrounding them was not. The Taste of Oakville menu promised three curated 3-oz pours paired with a charcuterie board for two. The pours arrived unevenly and slowly, with little explanation of the pairings. The charcuterie boards were plain and inconsistent between tables despite containing similar items -- basic fruit, crostini, simple cured meats, small portions of brie, and two slices of truffle cheese. No crackers, spreads, or thoughtful touches elevated the experience, and presentation varied noticeably. Our second wine pour didn't arrive until our mains, and service moved so slowly we requested a wine list to order a bottle. We were told there is no wine list -- "we're not that kind of restaurant." Instead, all reds are $80 and all whites $70, and the owner selects the bottle for you after asking only red or white. The concept might work if explained upfront; without context, it was confusing. At one point, noticing my empty glass, our server poured me a random red -- which turned out to be the same wine as our first pour -- and then left without serving anyone else. We had to remind staff we were still waiting for our second curated pour. Nothing about the experience felt curated. The most surprising moment of the night came when our mains arrived. As we lifted our appetizer plates -- still holding olive pits, fruit rinds, and crumbs -- the servers told us not to worry about clearing them and proceeded to place our main dishes directly on top of the used plates. I'm still shocked. I wouldn't do that at home, let alone expect it at a Lakeshore, or quite frankly, any restaurant. Two of us ordered the tagliatelle, which was tasty but contained only two small pieces of short rib -- and was difficult to enjoy while staring at discarded rinds beneath the plate. The other two ordered brisket sliders: two sliders, no sides. They tasted good but left diners hungry. One guest joked they kept thinking the fruit rinds were fries -- unfortunately accurate. We tried to make the best of the evening, but it never delivered the cozy wine-and-charcuterie experience we had anticipated -- dim lighting, thoughtful pairings, something special. After finishing our meal, we requested our bills and reminded staff we were still waiting for the third curated pour. We were told "five minutes." Those five minutes never came. Eventually, wanting simply to leave, we paid a single combined bill and sorted it out ourselves. Dinner for four totaled $460. This was not the boutique Lakeshore dining experience we expected, and ultimately, it was deeply disappointing.

Captain's Boil, the formulaic chain would be the floor and the one I really enjoyed, Lobster Boil Seafood House, in North York would be the ceiling. What I'm about to say about Sea Salt would definitely leave their management a bit "salty". Unequivocally, Sea Salt sits in the deep basement of the pecking order. Sea Salt's standing was easily determined after my first spoonful of the seafood broil. The sauce was their downfall as they went overboard with the of garlic and not to mention they burnt the garlic. As the Cajun sauce is the soul of a seafood boil, their sauce literally ruined the entire dish and experience. The combo we ordered came with fried calamari and shrimp and fries. The fried calamari and shrimp lacked a bit of "salt", which is rather ironic considering the restaurant's name and neither of the sauce complimented (sweet chilli and ranch) the calamari well. The fries were what you expected it to be. But a little bit too much sauce. The one thing that I liked was you could choose to have the Turkish Salaam Cola as part of your combo drink choice. I didn't think it was all that different from regular cola, but it was nice to try. Service is quite slow here and not super attentive. We had to flag them down various times to get things that should have been provided. We weren't given enough plates to start and we had to request for bibs and disposable gloves. These are pretty standard things at other boil places. In general, the appetizers were better than the seafood boil. The portion of the combo was pretty good so we packed some of it to go. But to put things into perspective, the following day I reheated the food for lunch, and my two kids didn't even touch it (with one of them who had experienced Lobster Boil Seafood house). That tells you something!
