I don't care what your family thinks they know about driving, its all trash for the test. Had a great experience with Drive Rite. I took 10 lessons and passed my road test on the first try. Highly recommended for all new drivers!! Simon: extremely helpful, friendly, and reliable. Always available via email or phone to answer questions and schedule lessons. Steven: very professional and patient. I felt really safe during my 1st lesson when I was a huge nervous wreck on the road. Jim: really funny guy who talks a lot during lessons. I definitely became more relaxed on the road as I took more lessons with him. Alex: never took a lesson with him, but he drove me to my road test. Really kind guy. I could tell he would have been a good instructor. And now for the bad part. The 5 hour class was terrible. Everything about it was a complete nightmare. It was a full classroom and I had Silva. Maybe it was because majority of the room was under 21 years old, but the 5 hour lesson felt like it dragged on while everyone shared ridiculously dumb stories. So glad I went to this driving school, they are professional & really good at helping their clients. Just a couple of days before my road test Andre helped with me everything from building up my confidence to helping me learn to how to park the less complicated way. Ive been with this place around 11 months spent around $1300 in total with 27 lessons and failed the test three times. I take some responsibility but I could have been taught better. There was also a few times where I asked for one instructor and ended up with another. Sometimes instructors are changed without telling you so theres no consistency. Dont get me wrong the people are nice and Jim and Ed in particular are great guys and funny. They have a gift of keeping new drivers calm. However this place is over priced and I am ashamed I spent so much. There are places that you get more time for your money and include highway lessons. I will have to go elsewhere because Im not willing to waste anymore money here. read more

I don't even know where to officially start, so let's start with administration. Hiba the Front Desk Coordinator is amazing!!! Like hands down the sweetest person you'll ever meet. I had read all the reviews about drive rite and she was the first person almost every individual referenced and for good reason. She's phenomenal at making sure you get quality service. I love that you get exactly what you pay for. I went with the 10 class package, because I had never been on the road before and it was really perfect for me. I had a few teachers so I'll go into depth about my experience with them, but honestly my advice would be to stick with one or two who suite you best (the person/people you think will help you to learn everything you need to know in the shortest amount of time so that you make good use of each lesson. ) Remember, my review is from my personal experience, so it will be different for each person. Morgan- I believe she was a new teacher at the time. She's was my first teacher and really just cut straight to the chase with my driving. Ex. How to properly turn the wheel, how to make a good turn, staying in the middle of lane, slowing down in appropriate areas like bumps, school crossings, etc. She was great, I felt good about my first class. Kenny- He was really good. What I really enjoyed about my experience with him was that he could tell I was a visual person meaning, not everything can just be said to a new driver. Sometimes, you have to actually show them how to do certain things. I was having a lot of difficulty with parallel parking. He got out of the car and switched with me so that he could show me what my error was. Even when I didn't realize I was accelerating too much. He did the same thing, to show me what it felt like to be in the passenger seat Peter- He was nice, I don't think it was a great session. I'm petite and the whole lesson I really didn't do to great. We both realized at the end that my seat was not adjusted the entire time, and it was probably why I didn't do too well. He also told me I had a heavy foot. I kind of felt terrible about my driving skills after that experience. Lol Bebe- One of my top two favorites. She has such a fantastic personality. I felt so comfortable with her every time I drove with her. She immediately told me to negate the whole heavy foot notion, and she addressed every issue I was having. She also helped me to start paying a bit more attention to road signs and lanes. Overall, an excellent teacher. Andre- The other of my top two favorites. I actually really wanted him as a teacher cause the reviews said he was phenomenal. He knows the roads! He scared me a little at first, but I realized he was trying to make me learn to do things by myself. Cause on the road test they are not going to help you in any kind of way. He tackled every little error, especially where I was looking when turning. He caught me each time I wasn't paying attention to the road and tested me at each location to make sure I saw road lanes, signs, bikers, etc. But the most important was the parallel parking. He taughg me a shortcut that helped tremendously with this. My k-turns were also solid because of him. And this was all learned after one lesson. Excellent teacher, David- He was really great too. Very calm and cool. He helped me to figure out how to properly save myself if I had an issue with the parallel parking. Lol And to be honest on the road test, it really happened!! What a great experience! 1. My first class was with Stephen. After that first class I requested him for my subsequent classes. He was a fantastic instructor. He was patient and answered all my questions even the ones that might have seen ridiculous to an experienced driver. I learned so much. Where do I begin? If it wasn't for the unfortunate chain of events that took place Today I would have rated DriveRite 5 Stars! PROS- Hiba at the front desk is the absolute BEST! So sweet and extremely professional! You can always depend on her to take care of you! Kenny is the absolute BEST instructor. It's a shame that I've only had him for a few lessons and that's only because he is always being requested. He learns you as an individual and he will help you brush up on your weak areas! I've had lessons with multiple instructors and Kenny was by far the best! Drivers are always on time and give you the full lesson that you paid for. The company itself seemed to be very professional but then we get to the cons and it sort of changes my view on them. CONS- On the day of my road test. (Today) We had an instructor that did not know how to get to the test site. (Seaview) There was 4 of us in the car and myself and another gentleman googled the directions. Firstly nobody knew that this gentleman Michel, was the escort. Dave made multiple phone calls only to find out that the escort was right in front of him. He was very rude to Dave and said "well if nobody told you then you don't need me, I can just go about my business" The vehicle that we were given made a scraping noise every time u accelerated and had a malfunctioning right side view mirror. Needless to say I failed my road test at the very end while parallel parking. I won't blame the entirety of my failure on the mirror but you can not adjust it far down enough to be able to see the curb. Hence I got the curb. Automatic failure. In order to see the curb or the handle of the passenger side door you would need to raise your backside off of the seat (which is what I should have done.) There were other cars available so you would think that on the most important day (road test day) you would be given a car that is fully functional. 1 out 4 passed their road test today. What did I pay $600 for? To reschedule the exam and put a rush on it to retain everything you have learned is $200. Seriously? read more

I recently passed my road test on the very first try thanks to Drive Rite Academy! I grew up in NYC and never had a chance to learn to drive until recently, and wanted to take lessons at a driving school outside of Manhattan- learned about Drive Rite through its high Yelp reviews and I'm so glad I went with them! They are organized and have good cars to practice in. A few people deserve shoutouts: Monique- my main driving instructor, she was amazing. Strict but really teaches you and makes sure you learn all the techniques to make you an alert and safe driver. She isn't just a body who supervises you while you drive around and practice. She was so dedicated and truly wanted me to learn. Anyone who signs up at drive rite, I highly recommend requesting Monique to be your instructor. Hiba- what would I have done without Hiba?? She is the office coordinator/manager and was always so helpful and patient with me when scheduling my lessons. Since I took most of my lessons in the bulk of January and February, I was constantly checking the weather and worrying about potential snow storms - Hiba always helped me schedule and reschedule as needed. She was also so calming and really acted as a mentor and friend when I was freaking out during the process! Jim- I took the 5 hour class with Jim, that man is so funny and great. Only he could make a 5 hour class engaging and fun. Informative but also full of jokes and laughter and a good time. I was all set to start my driving lessons today. After church, I jumped in an Uber which cost me $30 to be on time for my first lesson. I didn't get my first lesson today. Why? Because my instructor Yoevelyn decided to take another instructor's student. This left me standing outside the entire time I should have had my lesson. After she finished with the other student and remained in the car (obviously not looking for me), I walked up to the car and asked if she was my instructor. She asked me what my name was, what time my lesson was scheduled for and to see my email (because apparently I'm standing out there waiting by the student driver cars for no reason). She then told me to go to the office to reschedule my lesson. No apology for my inconvenience and wasted Uber money. Nothing. So now I'm delayed in beginning my lessons by another week. I will advise everyone to stay clear of Yoevelyn when booking your lessons. She has no consideration for your time and does not conduct business accordingly. read more

Very convenient : if you want just a single class- try it(Andre will tell you your approx level, it helps a lot), if you want a few- you can get a really good package (there are many of them and I'm sure one of them would be just perfect for you), if you need 5 hours course only- it's all there( ask for Jim).. I had more than 10 lessons in Drive rite academy, all of the instructors i had were great, in the beginning the first time when i took the road test i used to have different instructors and not the same instructor, so i really didn't know their names but i would suggest if you're comfortable with the way a instructor teaches then pick him/her for all your road lessons. Hiba was awesome and really sweet. After i failed my first road test, i called and made another appointment to schedule the road test, done. I scheduled 7 lessons and they were with Kenny and there was one with Jason. Kenny and Jason are awesome instructors! i would suggest them and Kenny makes you feel at ease when driving and makes you feel like a confident driver as well. The only reason why i'm giving this school 3 stars because i had to pay almost 1,000 and didn't pass two times, the road exams were in Brooklyn, and i usually didn't have that much luck when it came down to the examiners. The instructors gave excellent lessons, and showed you some tricks when it came to parallel parking and it felt really easy to parallel park! Good luck! read more

This is probably the easiest, most deserving 5-star review I'll ever give in my life. As a person who's driven before, but never in the States, I was dreading having to go through the whole process all over again. I thought I'd check Yelp and, lo and behold, Drive Rite Academy was at the top of the list. Seeing all the excellent reviews made me curious, but once I stepped into their office, I immediately understood what previous reviewers meant. First off, Hiba, at the front desk, is an absolute ray of sunshine. Not only is she kind and sweet, but she's super helpful, supportive, and makes you feel right at home. You get the feeling the place would crumble without her. My work schedule is pretty hectic and she completely understood the fact that I couldn't book any lessons during the week. She made sure I was all set up as soon as I was done with the 5-hour pre-licensing course, and when I had to reschedule a few lessons, she was so patient and just worked her magic. You're the best, Hiba! For the lessons, I bought the Silver package (for $375 and consists of 6 driving lessons, the 5-hour course, a car for the road test, and a road test appointment). Sure, it's on the pricey side, but it's sooo worth it. I felt like 6 lessons would be enough for me to learn the rules of driving here in NY (lights, signs, etc.) and I got just that all thanks to none other than... Jason! I owe all my gratitude to him and then some. If you consider yourself a nervous driver like I do, ask for Jason. The man is the master of calm, cool, collected. During my first lesson, he asked me what I knew/didn't know, what I thought my weaknesses were, and even told me what to expect on the road test. I've always avoided parallel parking, but Jason taught me how to during my very first lesson and I was so surprised at how easy it was I almost cried! He's very observant and easily picked up on the things I had trouble with (i.e. wide turns, staying within the required speed limit...) and had me constantly practice, practice, practice. The constructive criticism he provided during each lesson definitely helped build my confidence, too. His patience is limitless and even took the time to actually write down some driving maneuvers. The lessons are 45 minutes long, but the time just FLEW by with Jason. He genuinely cares about his students and because of him, I don't think I've ever felt more comfortable behind the wheel. So thank you, thank you, thank you, Jason!!! Because I booked most of my lessons on the weekends, I didn't get to experience as many different teaching styles as I would've liked to, but I have to give a shout-out to Kenny. I had one lesson with him towards the end and it was one of the most enjoyable driving experiences ever. He is fun personified and has the best, most positive attitude ever. I would hire him as my life coach if I could. He helped me polish up a few things on my parking and 3-point turns and it was nice to get different feedback than what I was used to from Jason. Because I work in the area, I still see Kenny around and he never fails to put a smile on my face! Also, the 5-hour course is exactly that - 5 hours. An unavoidable band-aid you have to rip off, but thanks to Jim, it flew by fast. He kept it light and enjoyable with his jokes, and the videos were informative and pretty intense, but I liked that they didn't shy away from the dangers of irresponsible driving. Jim was also the one who drove me to the road test site and having him crack jokes along the way definitely helped ease my fraying nerves. The end result: I passed on my first try!!! Just like Jason said I would. I'll definitely be back for some highway lessons once I have the time. I can't sing any more praises of Drive Rite Academy if I tried. I just passed my road test this week after only first applying for the theory test a few weeks ago, this turnaround is in no small part due to Drive Rite quickly getting me booked in for the 5 hour course, lessons and the road test. My only constructive feedback here is that I had to elicit an overview of the process from Drive Rite, emailing and asking in person a number of times, so I could understand how the process of booking lessons and the road test would work - a clear overview up front would be useful for people such as me, coming from overseas and not being familiar with the steps to get a license. As for the lessons, they were great, Kelly and then Jason provided clear and tailored feedback to me, adjusting the lessons to my driving experience. I wish the 5 hour course would have been made better use of though, Drive Rite could substitute one of the many YouTube videos or life stories from Jim with useful information about the road test, for example, what all the auto fails are. Not a fair piece of feedback for Drive Rite, but the road test conditions are laughable - you wait in line by the side of the road with zero facilities and the examiners come and go and you just have to wait for when they get to you - I feel sorry for the new drivers that have to do the test after this. read more

I purchased the Gold Package which included 10 x 45 minute, 5-hour class, road test + car. This cost around $500. Because my instructor was so good, I paid another $300 in lessons to be more comfortable. I invested $800 in this school. The Good -I passed on my first try at Starret City, Brooklyn while it was raining cats and dogs -I only passed because of my amazing instructor Monique. I have had other instructors in the school, but Monique was definitely the best. I had her from start to finish. She tells you what is wrong and how to fix it, the other instructors were very passive. I need someone to be critical of my driving, it is important especially being a new first time driver. -during the 5 hour class I had Jim, he was entertaining and the class went by fast. The Bad -The business could have been run much better, I have had a lot of aggravation throughout the whole process. -Strike 1: I booked all my appointments in advance, specifically requesting Monique, but at least 5 times it has been a surprise random instructor. I am generally non-confrontational, but the school keeps messing up the appointments -Strike 2-5: Same thing over and over again. Because they scheduled me with a random instructor, which I got nothing out of, it was a waste of time and money. It is such a simple thing, reception tells me one thing, when I show up it is a surprise. Very unprofessional. -Strike 6: On the day of my road test, I show up at the school to the test site. It is my turn to go first, the examiner comes in punches my numbers in and says I am "not scheduled." How does that happen? Apparently someone from the school was fiddling with the program and cancelled me the day before. Of course, another surprised and a waste of a whole day. The worst thing was being squished with 4 other kids coming back to the school, not even able to take the exam. I speak to the owner Simon, he has no idea what happens. Only After confronting him, he offered 3 extra lessons and reschedule the exam on the day I was off. What I did not like was that I had to really confront him about it, he would not have offered if I did not fight him about it. Also, it was the school's mistake, and he personally did not work on it he had his wife work on the scheduling. -Strike 7: Haven't heard from him in a few days, I was just about to call my credit card company to dispute everything and leave the school. Then after constantly calling, I spoke to him and had it rescheduled, but apparently his wife was supposed to call me and let me know? Very unprofessional. -Strike 8: So I scheduled 2 hours with monique right before the rescheduled test. I had a lesson with her the day before but on the day of, I was not on her schedule. Apparently, they put me with someone else again? (Honestly, if someone is spending all this money at your school, get it right, it is the same problem over and over again). Also, I don't think they scheduled an instructor to drop me off at the test site. After much avail, I finally got that corrected after I requested for a refund, extra aggravation over nothing. Simon wanted to convince me to use the other instructor, I have no Idea WHY? Overall: 1. went to this school because of the amazing reviews on yelp, I am surprised no one gave a bad review. Maybe since everyone is a college kid. 2. I would have left a long time ago and disputed the charges with my credit card company if it wasn't for Monique, she kept me at the school and helped me pass. 10 STARS FOR MONIQUE. 3. If you want an instructor, a specific one that you know is good and works for your learning style, you should be able to get it, especially if you are PAYING for it. You should not have a different instructor every time. 4. Simon has "tried" to correct all the mistakes, but he was not sincere about it, and the same mistake kept happening over and over again. He basically said its not his fault that everyone wants a specific instructor. 5. Based on my experience, I WOULD NOT recommend this school. I am all about supporting small business, but I do not want anyone to go thru what I went thru. They need to fix their scheduling issues. I have been there since June. read more

This company is completely disorganized. I paid for a package for my nanny and they were terrible. They said she had a road test appoint twice and made up an excuse both times. She has been trying to get her license since May! (August test and October test they turned her away) buyer beware ok so the driving school called me now that I posted this review. after a very frustrating conversation, I had to hang up. they guy wanted to debate with me and called my review a lie. (if it's my opinion how can it be a lie, my friend was turned away 2x). they said they will help me but only if I take this review down. the guy did admit the confusion could be they only communicate by email and they need a new system. I tried to tell him I would revise the review once we got some help. he still wanted to debate. I would look for a more professional and customer service oriented organization. read more

There are a couple of things this driving school could improve on... 1, the fact that you don't get the same instructor everyday is confusing as some of them have different driving styles and tell you to do things differently. I would've liked the same person everyday I honestly think I would've done better 2. There was an instructor at the end who basically broke my confidence and said he's not sure if I'll pass the road test which was different from what everyone else was saying. That being said, I DID pass the road test and this school DID teach me how to drive. For the most part, everyone was pretty professional and reception was always super nice. Okay so I am so overjoyed that I found and chose to go with a driving school that wasn't close to home based on their reviews. I searched for the best fit for my son. Jim the instructor and my son was a great fit, my son was very comfortable and pleased with how patient and relaxed he made him feel even when he was making obvious mistakes. I can't praise Drive-Rite enough for getting me through one of the most challenging fears I had as a 26 year old. I've always been embarrassed by the fact that I didn't have my license or the slightest clue of how to drive at my age. A year ago, my boyfriend and I decided we would be moving Upstate in Spring of 2016, I knew I had to push my fears aside and learn how to drive before the "big move". In the beginning of 2016, I signed up for the 10-class package with Drive-Rite. I wanted as much assistance as possibly through this. My first few lessons were nerve-wrecking and every time I would finish a lesson I was still in shock that I was actually driving. David and Jim were my first teachers, funny and laid-back, good teachers to ease into the process of learning with. I would highly recommend Andre for as many of your lessons as possible. He's very articulate, focused, well-versed in the world of driving, and helped me become confident behind the wheel. He's passionate about you learning, understanding, and demonstrating all concepts of driving. Stephen is also a great teacher and is similar to Andre in terms of teaching style. The front desk manager, Rebecca is the sweetest most proficient thing ever, and the owner Simon is funny and caring to all students. Within two weeks of signing up for my classes, I already had my 5-hour course completed, and my road test scheduled a week or two after that. Drive-Rite keeps the ball rolling when it comes to scheduling everything. I passed my road test on the first time at the Jamaica testing site, I couldn't have been more thrilled. Prior to taking the test, I did sign-up for 3 more classes, just to feel more comfortable. I recommend doing a 'double' class if you can, more time in the car, more confident. The one thing that surprised me is that you don't go on any highway until after you pass your road test. I was a bit surprised to learn that I could get my Driver's License having never been on a highway or freeway, but now that I have the mechanics of driving the winding and crazy streets of various Brooklyn neighborhoods, I can't imagine the highway to be that much more challenging. I enrolled in a lesson with Andre on how to drive on the highway. He went beyond expectations with the information handed out and different types of scenarios encountered. Merging onto the highway alone, he had me experience long types, short and super short, stop, yield, and the hidden kind that needs a quick entry. Changing lanes was nerve-wracking and jerky, but we worked on it and Andre's prime and calming advice is to "stay in the right lane and that's fine, let others pass you." No sense of stress or flustering, very fluid throughout. Last but not least, the visual advice of seeing the highway as a series of rubber duckies in a flowing stream, just find and take that gap to seamlessly fit right into the flow. Boy, Andre kept the entire car environment so calm, cool, and suave. Phenomenal lesson and his advice continue to stick with me as I flow through traffic with my fellow driving rubber duckies. read more

I took 15 lessons with Jim. Not cheap but definitely worth it as I passed the test on my first try! Even more importantly, I feel like Jim has prepared me to be a confident driver. After passing I took a highway lesson with Jim, which was a huge help. Took my road test in sea view and Drive Rite helped me pass the very first time . Jason And Valerie Are no nonsense but they kept me relaxed during my lessons and taught me a lot ! If you can request them do so . Only downside to this school was that they don't pick you up or drop you off but everything else was great , and the online scheduling is super convenient ! read more

Took my 5-hour pre-licensing course with Slyvia tonight. While times were very graphic, it was a very educational course. Slyvia is clearly a very experienced driver and knows what she's talking about. You can tell she takes her job very seriously. She's also very generous in providing as much useful information as she can. She even went above and beyond by texting us additional parallel parking tips.
