The blackened fish added another layer of flavor, and the coleslaw was excellent--on the tacos or straight off the fork. The vibe was laid back, friendly, and easy. Local artwork on the walls gave the place a nice community feel, the staff was warm and welcoming, and the restrooms were clean--which always earns bonus points. You can sit inside and have a cute view at the booth ir your can sit outside in a little balcony type. Very surfer aesthetic! Pricing was okay too. Driftaway Cafe was just what I needed after days of not eating the best while traveling. They are pet friendly and have a small patio space. I walked in but didn't want to take my pup all the way inside the restaurant, I asked the bartender if I could sit outside, and was met with the semi snarky comment of that is why there are tables outside. The waitress came out and apologized for the barender's rudeness, which was nice. I got there about a half hour before 5p. I ordered an entree not realizing they didn't serve entrees until 5. Thankfully the kitchen put my order in. I got the mahi mahi and a slice of key lime pie. My entire meal was fantastic. The flavors were vibrant and citrusy on my tongue. I ate everything. I did wait awhile for my order to be taken. It was hot and the air didn't move much so waiting was a bit of downer but I am still giving 5 stars because the food was excellent and the kitchen made the exception for the early entree which I am grateful for. read more

While speaking to someone local, they recommend this spot for a light lunch and it did not disappoint. We arrived around 12:30pm on a Friday and it was busy but they had plenty of seating that we were able to get a table right away. For our appetizer we settled on the firecracker shrimp. When we got them they were nice and warm! The sauces drizzled over the top was a nice touch and added to the flavor. When deciding how we wanted our Baja fish tacos cooked we settled on blackened. We had never had it this way and our waitress recommended it. We loved how the blackened fish gave the tacos another set of flavor to an already flavorful meal. The coleslaw was very good! You could have added it to the top of your tacos or just eat it with a fork, you really couldn't go wrong. Overall our dining experience was really good! It was fun to look around and see the display of local artists' artwork hanging on the walls. Everyone was very warm and welcoming. We stopped by recently on a Friday evening. We were searching for a place with a good variety on the menu and Driftaway Cafe fit. We chose to seat our party of 6 on the patio since the weather was so nice. Unfortunately we regretted that decision once the live music started. Although the patio area is fairly small, the gentleman chose to use an amp. While the music was decent it was just entirely too loud to enjoy our meal. We couldn't speak to one another at all after that except for his break. We noticed another table relocate inside after a few minutes, which we should've done too...just a tad harder for a bigger group (with elderly) unfortunately. The young lady who served our table was decently fast but not the friendliest. The food was pretty average overall, but my French dip was quite good and seemed to be the most enjoyed. Came here on a Sunday for lunch and right upn entry, we got a friendly greeting and given directions to where we could sit on the back patio with our pup. They had a surprising number of beers on tap and the service was very quick but the real star was the food, both in taste and portion. I had the red fish which was the catch of the day and it comes with such a large (and delicious) filet that the bun can't even fully close! Also had some remoulade drizzled on and would 100% order again. My wife got fish tacos and they came with 2 pieces of fish per tac, had a great crunch and flavor. This was a cute little restaurant with super cool AC on a very hot day! The owners work the bar and are very hospitable, my wife's draft cider came with ice around the lip of the glass. Serving fresh local shrimp and fish, we opted for blackened fish Baja tacos and they were very good. The blackened fish was cooked perfectly and had the right amount of spice. The blackened seasoning was a bit on the salty side but didn't overwhelm the dish, and the Baja sauce tied everything together. The fries were hot and crispy. Overall, this place is really good for the location and price. There needs so be a deep clean in this place- it's one of those where you catch a word of something unpleasant when you walk in. It could be the carpet, or it could be the location (there's a creek in the back and you know how humidity impacts buildings here in SAV). There were also a lot of flies where we sat, that's just never a pleasant experience while you eat. The view if you sit towards the back is serene, we saw so many creatures and critters. Now that I got that out of the way, let's talk about food! I will say that the food options are a lot! There's something for almost everyone, I don't recall seeing many veggie or vegan options. The corned beef hash is probably the best I've had in the greater Savannah area. The menu except says "not your canned corned beef" and they are telling the truth! The chicken biscuit it also delicious. There's plenty of indoor seating, and the the bar looks like a cool place to sit and hang. When we left, live music was getting started. What a great spot. My husband and I both ordered the the Parmesan Fish and Shrimp and my mother in law ordered Fish and Chips. The food came out piping hot just like I love my food. It had been cooked upon order. That was a healthy piece of nice fresh fish. The shrimp was nice size and was also delicious! It had red potatoes and asparagus. The dish was cooked to perfection. My mother in law loved her fish and chips. She is a local and had been there many times. Our service was fantastic also. This was our favorite meal of the weekend. Once we sat it took almost 10 minutes for our server to come to the table. I understand being a little slow if it was busy, but it was about 25% full. The water tasted like they got it straight from a creek, so bad I couldn't drink it. I got the Cuban sandwich, bread was soggy like it sat in the kitchen for a while, very bland, all I could taste was pickle. My significant other had the salmon BLT, the salmon was not seasoned (or so lightly that you couldn't taste it,) the bacon was under cooked, and the chips, that were supposed to be freshly cooked, were cold and stale. I had higher expectations based on the reviews. We came for brunch, I ordered for the crab cake Benedict. The English muffin was overly chewy, the crab cake had shredded crab, not lump and was only ok in flavor. The poached eggs were a little overcooked and did not have the runny yoke and there was very little hollandaise. The potatoes were different, they had black beans intermingled in them and did not add anything to the side. My first visit, my husband's second. We arrived as early bird was finishing up. Friday night at 6:30pm. We chose to sit outside. Our server was so friendly and helpful. She was very busy though and did her best to be timely, however we still had to wait quite a bit at times. We ordered firecracker shrimp and beer on tap. It was pretty good. Seasoning was minimal- so overall it was a little bland. I took the server's suggestion about ordering the fish and chips instead of the salmon BLT. My fish and chips were average. There was a lot there. It was kind of basic fish and chips, but I still felt like it could use more flavor. The coleslaw was a huge disappointment- creamy with zero flavor and was served room temp- very tepid. Do not recommend that at all. We then had a margarita- that was great! Finished up with key lime pie, which was a small slice, but was perfect- very tart! Overall it was just okay. I think it's best for drinks, dessert and maybe appetizers. Not sure if we will go back. We were lucky to get the last round table under an awning. It was a beautiful 80 degree day in early February. Some nice Georgia weather after that bitter cold spell 2 weeks ago. I had a shrimp quesadilla that was loaded with shrimp and cheese. Our other order was a creamy crab dip, We decided to go with 2 appetizers for lunch. Both were excellent. We spent eight days on Tybee Island, and ventured into Savannah a few times. We pretty much ate out for every meal (vacation time!). The Driftaway Cafe is one of those surprise gems that you run across every once in a while, if you are lucky! We were just looking for a place to grab a quick bite on the way to the airport and happened across it. The restaurant is cute, quaint and clean. The service is friendly and fast. That's not even the best part! Everyone ordered sandwiches from a Reuben to French dips and I ordered a salmon bacon BLT. Everyone said the food was great, including the delicious potato salad. I couldn't believe the slab of salmon on my sandwich. I don't know that I've ever had a larger or better serving, even on very expensive dinner orders. It was cooked perfectly and was excellent. That is something I will definitely be making at home. They also have a full bar that won't break the bank like the insane prices at most of the tourist traps we have experienced on this trip. Even though we were staying on Tybee, I would have driven over to eat at the Driftaway. The menu prices were great too! I didn't see anything not to love about this restaurant. On a Saturday for lunch, the place was busy, but for the three of us, we were able to be seated immediately. This place was popular and lively. For an appetizer, we ordered the Blue Chips, which were housemade potato chips with crumbles of bleu cheese on top, sour cream and scallions. They were crunchy and delicious. For my lunch, I ordered the Skidaway Oyster Sandwich, which was comprised of fried oysters, buttered Texas toast. lettuce, tomato, onion and a remoulade for the sauce. It came with a side of fries, which were double dipped. My sandwich was good, but on the heavier side. The batter on the oysters was crispy with tender oyster underneath and was the best part of the sandwich. Texas toast had a soft texture from the butter, but was firm enough to hold up the sandwich. Not a bad sandwich, but with a large menu, I'd likely order something else. Staff was friendly and our server checked in with us multiple times during service. Prices here are great and affordable, especially the drinks, which was a nice surprise, compared to Savannah's historic district.
