My kind of dump! LOL... don't let the rundown appearance fool ya, the food is awesome! See below for review of bathrooms though. We stopped here for lunch on a Tuesday, place wasn't too busy and the service was attentive and both drink and food came out quick. We had hush puppies and peel & eat shrimp to start. The hush puppies weren't much on their own (as they tend to be) but dipped in honey butter they were damn good and kind of addictive. The peel and eat shrimp were cooked perfectly, sweet and succulent. After peeling don't forget to devein if needed... about half our order had some mud vein remaining (which is fine for peel and eat, just remove it!). Then my wife and I split the lunch special, a double fried flounder sandwich with cheese and tartar sauce... a take on McDs double fillet-o-fish. It was amazing! The fresh flounder was cooked perfectly and was soft and juicy inside its crispy fried crust. My wife especially appreciated the toasted bun! The coleslaw that was the lunch special side wasn't great... under seasoned imo. I put a little malt vinegar, salt & pepper on it and it was fine. To finish it off we split a piece of key lime pie. This is the first time either of us had key lime pie, so we don't have much context to compare this to, but our experience with this key lime pie was amazing. The crust was one of the best graham crusts I've had. It was buttery and cooked to the point it had a caramel taste to it. The filling had a cheesecake taste and texture to it with a distinct citrus lime tang. The whipped topping was creamy and cool, a perfect complement to the custard-like filling. A wonderful dessert! Now, the only bad part of this review is of the bathrooms. As much as I like a dive bar, back country vibe... the bathrooms are gross. My wife was visibly disgusted when she returned to the table. Later in our trip she used the restroom at a Savannah gas station and joked it was the Taj Mahal compared to the restroom at Bubba Gumbo's. So, be warned... just hold it if you can! We decided to have dinner at this local favorite in Tybee Island. It is a good amount of outside dining and very casual. You can choose your own seat here. The restaurant is right on the water in the middle of a marina, so fishing boats come in and they clean the fish not far from the restaurant's edge. We started off with a half pound shrimp that was hot and well seasoned. The cocktail sauce was very spicy with horseradish. I tried the special Herb Salad. It was tasty but a little pricey at 18.63. It would have been tasty with some pecans or walnuts. For entrees we tried the shrimp and grits. Very tasty with red eye gravy on top. Was missing the sausage, but still very good. Shrimp was well seasoned. The scallop dinner was delicious. Came with Alfredo sauce, hush puppies and a side salad. Prices are fair for all local seafood, which is what you expect on Tybee. And you can taste the difference in the local seafood. Very fresh and tasty. My one negative here was food came out too fast. We were still enjoying salads, then the shrimp appetizer came out. We were still eating our shrimp app, and the entrees came out. Felt a little rushed. The server was ready to bring the check, but we asked for dessert first. They already ran out of one dessert and just had the special, which was cheesecake. I normally don't complain about food coming out too fast, but when you are rushing through your courses, it feels like they need your table quickly. Food was really good, so it was just easy enough to ask for to go boxes with what we could not finish. Go early so there is no wait. People were waiting as we were leaving. read more

Had dinner Thursday evening. Rustic Shrimping community restaurant. Live music that night. I had the Jambalaya with about 8 Cajun Grilled Shrimp! Maybe # 1 or 2 on my Best meals ever. Good size portion, sausage, spices, rice, Outstanding to me. Left me wanting more (because it was So good), but No room for more. Hush puppies were good. Sweet like dessert. This place was so disappointing -- especially after it having been hyped up so much. The day we stopped by for lunch they were sorely understaffed. The servers and the kitchen were both overwhelmed and not handling well. Can't imagine how they'll operate as the season gets busier. We placed our order and it felt like it was taking forever. I checked and saw that we'd been waiting quite awhile. I was tired of sitting so I stood up. A gal who I assumed was the manager came over to tell me that our order had only (!!) been placed 36 minutes ago and that they were not a fast food restaurant. Another server got our food for us -- two bowls of their "famous" seafood gumbo -- that only needed to be dished up. The other problem was that the 3 small grilled shrimp on top of the soup were the only seafood in the entire dish. We had planned on ordering something else to eat after the soups, but decided to leave. The poor guys sitting next to us had to wait 20 minutes for a club soda. The server forgot to get their side salads entirely. They mentioned it when the server came by after 10 more minutes and they finally got them after they'd finished their sandwiches. There were a lot of folks waiting for a table. Several parties left in frustration. There were open tables, but they were not seating anyone for over a half hour. So unless you're not planning on doing much else the day you stop by, you might reconsider dining here. read more

Well, what can I say? We just finished our third night of dining at the wonderful Bubba Gumbo's. If the atmosphere of a wonderful dive bar nestled amongst the Marina, seafood market, kayak rentals and charter boat excursions and jet ski rentals doesn't get you then the food most certainly will. Over the 3 nights and oh, by the way, one takeout lunch, we had the crabcake dinner,the low country boil, steamed local shrimp, grilled local Snapper, fried local flounder fried oysters, hush puppies with honey butter and for that lunch, I mentioned, I had the hamburger and their seafood gumbo. With all that great food, you also have to mention all the great people. There was Sam and Todd behind the bar and of course the owners Caitlin (Kaitlyn...not sure of spelling) and Anna. All of these people.And so many more work very hard to make this an outstanding destination. I can't finish this review without once again saying, how important local flavor is to this restaurant. That includes the people that frequent the restaurant like Shane, who runs the kayak business Tara, who runs the charter boat business and Dan, who runs a Airbnb with a houseboat. All of these amazing people and amazing food will guarantee that I will continue to go back there to experience everything and everyone. read more

Was pretty exited to try this place. I got Crab Stew and Shrimp and Grits. I expected the crab stew to blow me away. It didn't. It was ok. Not something I'd get again. We had eaten here years ago on another road trip from Vermont. Great place. Staff treated us and our English Setter Sonny like old friends. We had Grouper and Redfish dinners, grilled and blackened. FRESHest of seafood with excellent sides.. We particularly love the funky ambiance and again can't say enough about how friendly the staff is. Food was fresh I had a fresh fillet fish on a brioche roll and my husband had to catch of the day order off the fresh menu board of what they caught during the day we had some of the gumbo it came out slightly under hot. Heard about about the Gumbo and decided to stop. We were seated inside on the dock side and received our beverage orders right away as we looked over the menus, to see if any other dishes might appeal. We both decided to go with their famous seafood Gumbo. Forty (40) minutes later we asked about our Gumbo orders and we're told they had to grill the shrimp that goes on top. ( I would never eat shrimp that had to be grilled for 40 minutes). A few minutes later our Seafood Gumbo bowls arrived. The Gumbo was dark and tasty, however, the Seafood part was lacking, being outnumbered by Sausage pieces and very little seafood. Unfortunately, we were told the wait would be a half an hour but was an hour. Then, when we got inside it took them a half an hour to bring us our drinks. (we were only 4 people) Then, when we finally ordered our food, we waited at least and hour and a half for our food. We had ordered peel and eat shrimp, jambalaya, and a burger. The shrimp and the burger was pretty good. There was supposed to be sausage, shrimp, crab, and rice. There was no crab and shrimp, two pieces of sausage, and no more than a half a cup of rice. The whole plate was pretty much just chunky diced tomatoes. There was no seafood at all. Overall, the peel and eats and the burger was the only good part of the whole 3 hour waiting time. Our waiter was wasn't very charming. We told her what we thought of the food and she didn't care one bit. I don't recommend the restauran. read more

If you don't like the smell of fish, this is NOT the place for you! They are cutting up the fish right outside but you know its fresh! The service was great! The drink was good (no one wants a weak drink). My husband got the gumbo and said it wasn't seasoned properly and was missing a tad of cajun spice but was still good overall. My buffalo shrimp were a little too hot (prefer mild) but the shrimp were HUGE and fresh! This place is much better than other places we have had around Tybee! read more

We waited for an hour the first time we tried to eat here (was told a half Hour wait) then to be told close to 845 that were actually looking at at least another half hour for food. Just in time for every other place to be closing as well. We left because it was looking like an absolute shit show there. The next day we tried to stop for lunch and the place is pretty dead and told 15 minute wait for 2 people. Several other groups walked in and were seated so I went back To ask if we were up next and she for sure forgot us and was like "ohhh yeah I'm about to seat you now." And then never came back?? The waitresses were very welcoming and recommended great dishes. They even offered us a sample of the gumbo before fully committing to the order. Apparently their gumbo is what they're known for and honestly after the sample, we decided not to order it as it was a little too salty for our liking. Came down to Tybee Island for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Was looking for a place to have dinner. Decided to go to Bubba Gumbo's. This place is for sure a local dive. It's hidden off the main road and when you get to it, you may ask if you're in the right place. Trust me, you are. Everything on the menu sounded good. We ended up getting the Scallop dinner, crab cake dinner, and shrimp dinner. For dessert not showed, we got key lime pie. It melts in your mouth. The service was really good. The staff was friendly and polite. It is a typical seafood/bar located on along the water. Will for sure be coming back next time I'm in town. read more

The 5 stars is RELATIVE-- to this being the best place we ate it in our stay on Tybee. Loved the place, loved the menu, the service and food were all great, and I had one of the best old-fashions I've ever had (although I admit my biggest appreciation came from the size of the pour!!!). We had a great variety of the dishes. Gumbo was ok, not outstanding but solid. Jambalaya, grilled and blackened fish, etc. Hush puppies were really tasty. Even the veggie of the day was great (brocolini). Everything about the place was top notch.
