We decided to have dinner at this local favorite in Tybee Island. It is a good amount of outside dining and very casual. You can choose your own seat here. The restaurant is right on the water in the middle of a marina, so fishing boats come in and they clean the fish not far from the restaurant's edge. We started off with a half pound shrimp that was hot and well seasoned. The cocktail sauce was very spicy with horseradish. I tried the special Herb Salad. It was tasty but a little pricey at 18.63. It would have been tasty with some pecans or walnuts. For entrees we tried the shrimp and grits. Very tasty with red eye gravy on top. Was missing the sausage, but still very good. Shrimp was well seasoned. The scallop dinner was delicious. Came with Alfredo sauce, hush puppies and a side salad. Prices are fair for all local seafood, which is what you expect on Tybee. And you can taste the difference in the local seafood. Very fresh and tasty. My one negative here was food came out too fast. We were still enjoying salads, then the shrimp appetizer came out. We were still eating our shrimp app, and the entrees came out. Felt a little rushed. The server was ready to bring the check, but we asked for dessert first. They already ran out of one dessert and just had the special, which was cheesecake. I normally don't complain about food coming out too fast, but when you are rushing through your courses, it feels like they need your table quickly. Food was really good, so it was just easy enough to ask for to go boxes with what we could not finish. Go early so there is no wait. People were waiting as we were leaving.

Food quantity: 9/10 Food quality: 8/10 Service: 9/10 Ambiance: 7/10 Overall rating: 8.5/10 The shrimp was tasty, but the sausage a bit dry. It was a relaxing spot but the inside seating smelled heavily of fish, so we chose to sit outside.

Back for our 2nd year. Added the Cream of Crab Soup and Blueberry Crunble Cheesecake, incredible! We even had a dolphin appearance after dinner.

I was looking for a dish that was fried for dinner. I wanted fresh fish and also just some me time. I am so glad I stumbled upon this place. I sat and the bar. The bartender was AWESOME! She greeted me right away and provided me with a menu. I didn't know what I wanted to drink, just something islandy :-)She made me the best Mai Tai. The grilled Mahi was so so delicious! The freshness of the fish as well as the seasoning made it one to write home about. The regulars were also kind to this visitor which is always appreciated.

We enjoyed eating here. Dinner was a blackened mahi sandwich and a grilled grouper fillet. The fish was excellent. The sides of hush puppies, slaw, & fries were ok. The margarita was very good. Our server, Olivia was delightful. The view of the water & marina can't be beat. I love the old school vibe.

Shrimp & Grits. Fried Flounder Crab Stew

Was pretty exited to try this place. I got Crab Stew and Shrimp and Grits. I expected the crab stew to blow me away. It didn't. It was ok. Not something I'd get again. The Shrimp and Grits was what I really wanted to try. Again, they were ok. Not something I'd rave about, but they were fine. Wife had fried Flounder. It was absolutely fantastic. Definitely the star of the show.

This place was so disappointing -- especially after it having been hyped up so much. The day we stopped by for lunch they were sorely understaffed. The servers and the kitchen were both overwhelmed and not handling well. Can't imagine how they'll operate as the season gets busier. We placed our order and it felt like it was taking forever. I checked and saw that we'd been waiting quite awhile. I was tired of sitting so I stood up. A gal who I assumed was the manager came over to tell me that our order had only (!!) been placed 36 minutes ago and that they were not a fast food restaurant. Another server got our food for us -- two bowls of their "famous" seafood gumbo -- that only needed to be dished up. The other problem was that the 3 small grilled shrimp on top of the soup were the only seafood in the entire dish. We had planned on ordering something else to eat after the soups, but decided to leave. The poor guys sitting next to us had to wait 20 minutes for a club soda. The server forgot to get their side salads entirely. They mentioned it when the server came by after 10 more minutes and they finally got them after they'd finished their sandwiches. There were a lot of folks waiting for a table. Several parties left in frustration. There were open tables, but they were not seating anyone for over a half hour. So unless you're not planning on doing much else the day you stop by, you might reconsider dining here.

Heard about about the Gumbo and decided to stop. We were seated inside on the dock side and received our beverage orders right away as we looked over the menus, to see if any other dishes might appeal. We both decided to go with their famous seafood Gumbo. Forty (40) minutes later we asked about our Gumbo orders and we're told they had to grill the shrimp that goes on top. ( I would never eat shrimp that had to be grilled for 40 minutes). A few minutes later our Seafood Gumbo bowls arrived. The Gumbo was dark and tasty, however, the Seafood part was lacking, being outnumbered by Sausage pieces and very little seafood. The 3 small grilled shrimp on top was apparently the sole qualifier to make this a seafood dish.

If you don't like the smell of fish, this is NOT the place for you! They are cutting up the fish right outside but you know its fresh! The service was great! The drink was good (no one wants a weak drink). My husband got the gumbo and said it wasn't seasoned properly and was missing a tad of cajun spice but was still good overall. My buffalo shrimp were a little too hot (prefer mild) but the shrimp were HUGE and fresh! This place is much better than other places we have had around Tybee!

Ask the Community - Bubba Gumbo's

    Do they take reservations?

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty much they will. When we went, we called ahead and asked if we'd be able to get a table for a relatively large group of seven, and they reserved a spot. But that was during a slow season.

    Is it Dog Friendly?

Yes! Dogs are welcome on our outside deck as long as they are on a leash

Because this was their first time in Savannah, we couldn't let them leave without a visit to the beach. Although the day was a bit overcast and windy, it was still a nice afternoon and we decided to grab some local fare before heading back to Pooler. Salt Island is a small restaurant located right on the main strip as you turn into the seafront area. There is limited parking in and around the restaurant, but we were lucky because Sunday afternoon was fairly deserted. However, I would imagine that on a busy weekend you would likely need to find creative parking because a lot of the nearby parking seemed to be reserved for home and condominium owners. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating with a sizable bar and plenty of room to entertain larger groups. The menu is fairly simple but packed with a couple of really interesting items that you wouldn't technically expect to find in a beachfront fish house. And while we didn't order any of the more offbeat items, I have to say, seeing Chicken Tinga on the menu was a pleasant surprise. Especially since my in-laws are Mexican. Lol, I actually ordered the whole fried snapper tacos, which was essentially a whole fish fried to perfection but then accompanied with a bounty of authentic Mexican taco fixings including fresh tortillas, Cajita cheese, and fresh salsa and guacamole. The waiter promised I would be the envy of the table, and I was! This thing was so big. I ended up taking some of it home and eating it as a late night fish taco snack. The rest of the table ordered a combination of the fresh fish served any way you like it and the shell on shrimp boil. Both options were also fantastic. They also offer a variety of beers and have a fairly full bar so there's fun to be had here for everyone. Service was also really tight with our waiter making multiple trips to the table to make sure everybody was good. This is definitely a spot I would recommend if you are hanging out at the beach.

The chowder was decent not great and to be honest the chili dog was good for what it is but that's not why you go. The mashed taters were horrible. The wife got the shrimp and sausage boil with corn and potatoes. Not a lick of seasoning. The potatoes were cooked well but 0 and I mean 0 flavor. Shrimp seemed fresh but again 0 flavor. I guess they are afraid of old bay or any seasoning for that matter. The sausage was also not good at all. Not sure what kind they use but it is not good. "Imagine Folgers... but worse," he said. I grew up on Eight O'Clock coffee--the only brand worse than Folgers-- so opted to brave the drip from Sea Wolf Tybee. How bad could it really be? Really bad. The Sea Wolf Tybee coffee was really, really, bad. The owners have made a deal with the barrier island devil where their successful establishment came at the expense of serving the worst coffee on earth. The coffee wasn't just bland, it was reeking with flavor, as if a tybee island horseshoe crab has been decaying in the coffee pot since the eatery was established in 2020. The server tried his hardest to prevent this 4-star review by warning me about the coffee, and in his defense the taste is not why I deducted Sea Wolf Tybee one star. I deducted one star because the vile 12oz cup of black drip coffee was $5 dollars. Like any diner at a lunch spot, I did not check the coffee's price before ordering it, assuming it'd be the standard $2-3 dollars. Even specialty coffee shops max their drip coffee prices at $4.50. Instead, Sea Wolf Tybee has opted to charge $5, rake-in a 95% profit margin, and exploit the trust of patrons who assume a cup of joe won't cost as much as Georgia's hourly minimum wage. I'm a former barista and coffee-lover, and $5 is the most expensive drip coffee I have ever encountered. Sea Wolf Tybee had outdone itself--the bill was more nauseating than the coffee.
