I brought in my child's vintage souvenir jacket (worth around $300) for dry cleaning, and it came back visibly damaged. The satin fabric was clearly burned and shrunk, with obvious texture changes compared to the untouched inner lining. When I pointed it out, instead of apologizing or taking responsibility, the owner immediately blamed their cleaning company and said it wasn't their fault. As a customer, I did not hire their third-party cleaner...I hired this business, which makes them responsible for the handling and condition of my property. What made it worse was the complete lack of accountability, professionalism, and basic customer service. I had to insist on not paying for the cleaning, and while they refunded me, there was still no apology. Big sigh only. I understand that dry cleaning can sometimes damage clothing. I've had garments damaged by other cleaners before. However, what makes the difference is how the situation is handled afterward. In this case, the complete lack of responsibility and basic respect as a customer is what I find most upsetting. If you care about your clothing, especially delicate or vintage items, I would strongly recommend going elsewhere. You should be aware that if an item is damaged here, responsibility may be denied rather than properly addressed. read more

Dry cleaners damaged jacket (holes, rips) and refused to take accountability. They literally said "I would throw this jacket in the garbage" afterwards. Jacket came in with fine condition (no holes or tears) and came out with multiple holes as pictured below. Olya patched one of them (the largest) but not the rest and I didn't receive a refund. I think the dry cleaning facility they send things to uses harsh treatment and doesn't handle products gently. I lost weight and brought in 3 pairs of dress pants for alteration; Olga was honest with me about which ones might be worth the price of alteration and gave me the heads up that the alterations had to be more than just taking in the waist (haha, that's all I thought would be needed). I got them back and they were great - the fit was perfect. I then got a gift certificate to Alts and took some other dress pants there for the same kind of alteration. Comparing the two alterations, Olga did a MUCH better job than Alts - she did some additional work that alts did not, and this ensured the pants were not baggy in odd places. If you ask her, she will also be honest with you about fit/complexity - and will even tell you if something suits you or if it's just too big all around, etc, which I appreciate. read more

Brought in several suit separates, a shirt, and skirt. My skirt was brand new worn once and got stained. Well, they got the stains out, but returned it to me with at least 6 snags and runs in the fabric that definitely weren't there before (as I'd checked the skirt to point out all the stains to show the cleaners and hadn't seen any of the runs). They also decided to use sharp pins to pin it to the hanger on return, damaging the fabric further. One pair of black trousers came back with white marks down the entire length of the side of one pant leg. Maybe the cleaner they used left residue. Another blazer came back with white patches near a pocket. All of the clothes came back with fuzz and random threads on them. And the white button down didn't have any collar stains removed (basic sweat). Overall I'm super disappointed. And very sad about my skirt that I only got to wear once before it got completely snagged. read more

I am an African American native New Yorker. I must say I've never experienced anything like this in my life. This evening I walked into this establishment with my daughter. I felt unwelcome here. I asked her about dry cleaning services specifically stain treatment. Jenny was extremely rude and standoffish when I inquired about her services. I called her out once I realized she was being extremely rude with me for no reason. Once I begun to record the encounter I had with her she threatened to call the police on me for no apparent reason. I will not support this business and neither should you. A business like this shouldn't be supported if they have no respect for the customer or potential customers. My daughter & I are traumatized from the encounter we experienced. Update of the update : I took a second pair of those same pants to the cleaners two weeks later and Olga adjusted them for me. She took out the entire waistband and redid it with elastic. They're beyond great now. The other pants the other tailor did are still too big and I remember her refusing to do what Olga did. I love Olga now and have referred several of my coworkers and friends to her as well. I'd never go back. Updated review: I picked up my pants and love the adjustments made. The entire elastic inside was replaced to a thicker one and made smaller, so that the waist fits. When I first picked them up and tried them on, the drawstring came out on the right side. I was able to tell the tailor about it and she was able to fix it in 15mins. I'd use their alteration services again. read more

As someone who is short and petit but with curves I constantly need my clothes tailored. I've also had lots of bad tailoring experiences and lots of mediocre ones. But Olga at Downtown Cleaners has been a godsend for me. Since finding her I've had numerous tops, dresses, pants done and they're always done to perfection. I cannot recommend her work enough. She is an expert and she does it right! She is, however, super busy and what should be a quick job can often take 2 weeks, and they do charge a ton more than other local spots. The last time, they took them back and did a half assed job fixing them, free of charge. Came back today to see a gentleman at the front desk. Usually, there is a lady present when I arrive in the morning. It was a pretty quick exchange. I handed in my pink prepaid receipt to get back my apparel. Luckily, I had no issues and also all of my four items, freshly pressed and individually hung on separate hangers. Before I walked on in, there was a sign that say cheapest dry cleaning in town and also that they have same day dry cleaning. This tidbit I did not know, so if I am ever in a time crunch, I will be sure to mention that I would love to have a particular item by the next day. Other signs on the window's facade state that they also dry clean and wash. They are able to clean carpets, rugs, wedding gowns, table cloths. The sign also reads that it can take care of suede and leather. Moreover, there is free winter and summer storage. There is also an option to wash and iron as well. My favorite is the 10% prepaid discount. Hmmm...I'm glad to have stopped to acknowledge the sign's content. read more

The level of personal service, reminds me of the New York I grew up in- unlike other places, who don't give a fig about the clothes, Downtown will call, if a piece needs to be dry cleaned instead of washed... or vice versa. At first I was worried that even though it was convenient it might not be good, but after 5 years I am happy with everything I've had done here - I've had multiple clothing items and household (fur throws, drapes, bedspreads). I've been happy with all of the results - and as many other reviewers have noted, Olya who does alterations is spectacular--there doesn't seem to be anything she doesn't have a solution for! I was a little bit concerned as the assistant I spoke with before Olya got there did not speak English and asked if I wanted her to cut off the train (which I definitely did not), but after Olya got there, I felt as though I was in very capable hands. I had paid a whopping amount to get my dress altered by a fancy Manhattan shop, and the gown had some issues when I got it back. I frantically brought the gown to Olga three days before my wedding to see if anything could be done, and Olga was extremely kind and offered a creative solution that completely fixed the issue. Was not mentioned to me; I brought it back when I discovered the damage. They replaced both front buttons, but with lesser quality buttons. Worst tailor experience of my life, and I've used many in NYC for decades. The owner Jenny made warm promises up front when she charged my card and agreed to a reasonable pickup time (right before I was leaving town). Then: failure, lies, rudeness and theft. They blew the deadline, hadn't started any of the 7 alterations when I showed up, and when I withdrew one untouched piece from the job to enable them to rush the rest before the end of the day, they kept my $50 for the work they didn't do. At first, I was promised a refund on that piece, but then Jenny refused to honor it, and made up some warm nonsense about how deadlines are optional for tailors (a deadline in her own handwriting on the receipt). Then she snatched back my receipt when I asked for the refund (but I still have a copy :) and made up more nonsense about how I was only allowed store credit for the work they never did -- even though the reason they never did it is because they were late. Zero integrity, and rude in the process. Of the work they did, one of the simple alterations was done wrong and I asked for that to be fixed. Jenny agreed that the fix was part of the initial price, but then threatened not to do it if I didn't give her a 5-star review! What a sleazy shakedown. Stole $50 by refusing to refund my $$ and fix the botched job. She can steal my $$ but she just bought herself an honest 1-star review. On my word: save yourself the trouble, Jenny's not to be trusted. read more

They lost two pairs of my socks the first time when I did drop-off there (they both came back with only one foot). I wasn't angry at all when I first found that because I thought it was just a mistake, however the woman there was very rude to me when I went back to look for my socks, and she never apologized. Meh more of a 2.5 but I'll round up today. They are so convenient for me that I have become a regular. The good: very timely and work with you on special requests. Allow you to provide your own detergent and softener for wash & fold. The not so good: very pricey, I don't think they do any of the dry cleaning in-house (adds 1-2 days on dropoffs) The annoying: their scale for W&F is usually off up to .5 a lb. they NEVER zero it out but they always make sure every once of clothes is on the dead center of said scale. And they recently changed staff (and raised prices). I was very comfortable with the girl who used to work there and I trusted her with my laundry. They offer 10% off for prepaying your order, but in reality you don't save much as they are very high priced. read more
