Food is good!!! Had the fried catfish!!!! The crust on the fish is well seasoned. Not overly seasoned, you really don't need hot sauce and the fish is fresh!!!!! The tartar sauce is all you need. The staff is friendly. That have an original dessert pecan cobbler... can't wait to try it.... I a getting the chicken fried stake to go!!!

The small lunch special! Let's eat!

Every town has that one restaurant that's been around forever. In Abilene, it's the Dixie Pig! In Canton, it's the DownHome Cage! Just look at that building, older than me! But this is the secret all the locals know about. When we got there, most of the customers were senior citizens, just like me! Hmmm, is there homestyle cooking headed my way? The daily special always has 2 choices, today was catfish or chicken fried steak. Glenda and I both chose the chicken fry. As you can see in the picture, the small was plenty for me! And delicious! Man, I love finding THAT restaurant in each town we visit. SO, next time you visit First Monday Trade Days, be sure and find the DownHome Cafe. You'll love it!

Hand breaded chicken fried steak with over medium eggs grits and toast. Yum!

Food was a good price for what they serve. Place has a good reputation but to keep it they will need to make some updates and cleaning. I am writing this survey to help the business and not destroy what they stand for. It is still a great place to go just needs some cleaning detail.

What a great restaurant. You get free beans and cornbread with most meals, along with a salad bar…read moretrip and ice cream for dessert. I got the chicken fried steak and so did my wife, we both got fried okra. However I got brown gravy and my wife got white gravy. The brown was better hands down. The steaks were about a quarter inch thick with the right amount of batter. The okra could have been crunchier but was still very good. I preferred the chili beans over the pinto beans but both were great. Salad bar was decent and came with quite a few options. It would have been nice to have had a sweet vinaigrette but I settled for Italian dressing. Everything was really good and so was all the help. Our waitress was so nice and helpful. For dessert we had the choice of blue bell vanilla, buttered pecan or cookies and cream. All for a great price. You have to try this place. You will not be disappointed!!

When we pulled up I was pleased to find a rustic building with both indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating is covered which is nice because it was actually raining that day. There was a large somewhat rowdy group sitting outside as we walked in, so we opted to sit indoors in the AC. It wasn't very crowded and there were plenty of open tables. You order at a counter, and a very polite young man took our orders and said it would be brought out to the table. While we were waiting a very friendly gentleman stopped by the table to welcome us in and see if we needed anything while waiting for our drinks. I was struck by how friendly the staff was and it definitely made a great first impression. I've been pleasantly surprised to find that BBQ places usually have options for vegetarians because of all the delicious sides (which is my favorite part anyway). I was very happy to enjoy a baked potato, mac and cheese, cole slaw etc as my family enjoyed the typical bbq fare. We were given I think one cup of bbq sauce with our plate but were able to get more when we asked the staff. As we were eating, Moma T herself came out and introduced herself, and just like everyone else we met she is one of the nicest people I've met. So super welcoming and even offered us a slice of complimentary cheesecake. It was super generous but we ended up going up to order and pay for two slices of cheesecake. It was very decadent, maybe a little too sweet for me but they had a ton of different flavors that all looked delicious. The customer service definitely earned the 5 stars for me on this one, I would visit again if I was ever back in town.
