After a visit to Canton super swap meet, stopped in Native Son for lunch. I had half a muffuletta (a bit salty for me)... wife had the turkey sandwich .. love the waffle fries.. the pork skin was well done (too much salt for me).. The appetizer - humus was delicious. Love the server, very courteous and attentive. Nice little place with window seeing out was nice.

The world's smallest 'organic' oyster.

The Great, The Good, & The one Ugly While searching for a new restaurant in our area, I stumbled across Native Son on Open Table. With the great reviews, I immediately booked us a table for last night, Friday June 20th. We arrived at 5:30 & were promplty greeted by a very friendly man (who we later realized was the owner). The restaurant is small, cozy seating, lively, fun, ecletic, and soon filled to capacity by 6:30. We were seated & our waitress quickly greeted us & took our drink order. The Great: The roasted broccoli hummus served with grilled sourerdough bread!!! I could eat this every day & never grow tired of it!!! The Good: The Gardenzolia Steak. Cooked to a perfect medium rare over a wood fired grill. It was a fresh, unique spin on steak. But, for me, the fried German potatos! Oh, and the tease of three slices of pickled celery...greatness, just needed more of it (which the table next to us agreed!) Now.....The Ugly. We ordered the char-grilled oysters. They arrived at our table pipinghot! I honestly think we might have needed a magnifying glass to find the oyster & pieces of aundoui sausage. Seriously, the smallest, toughest oysters I've ever eaten in my life. I had to spit one out because it was like chewing rubber. But, the sauce had great flavor, so at least there's that. When the owner stopped by our table to ask how things were, I let him know about the oysters & stated that if I owned the establishment, I would never serve these. He replied,'Well, they are organic'. WTH??!! Call me crazy....but aren't all oysters "organic'????? Don't recall ever eating a synthetic or GMO oysters. He proceeded to say we are in the summer months & they are getting smaller. Ro his credit, he did take them off our tab. Yes, we will definitely return, just not for the oysters!

muffaletta sandwich and house made pork rinds

My husband and I went on Saturday night ( July 19) and had a great time. We were greeted and shown to our table quickly. It was busy but the staff was excellent at making you feel like you were the only table they were working on. They had live music which we very much enjoyed. Our meal was great from start to finish, and do yourself a favor and get the warm banana pudding it was amazing. I also really loved the house made pork rinds, they came out still warm and were very good. Definitely give this place a try if you are in Canton.

Gumbo and waffle fries

Awesome food in downtown Canton. Check this place out next time you are rolling through.

Gumbo

On the spur of the moment, we decided to go to Canton for the day. The times we have been before it could be a bit of a struggle to find a good place to eat. That will no longer be the case!! Found Native Son online. The menu intrigued me. Made reservations online for bar seating. Ordered the blistered shishitos with manchego cheese. Yum! Perfectly charred and the salt from the cheese made the sweet come out in the peppers. The muffuletta is not like any I have ever had!! In the best way. The house made olive salad is salty, as it should be but has a spice that elevates. The meat is cooked to a prefect char that I never knew this sandwich needed. To make it perfect, the Gambino bun was crunchy. My husband got THE GUMBO. Yes all caps are needed for this!!! O M G. I cannot begin to describe this dish!! Let's just say it's the best damn gumbo I've had in YEARS!! And I have had a lot of gumbo. It's better than mine. Dark, savory, sausage browned just right, tender chicken and just enough okra iykyk. But kicker, a fried duck leg on top!!! Mmmmm, sugar brined overnight and fried to perfection!!! Sha-baby!!!! Then for kicks, got the fried pork skins. They were literally popping when we got them. We will be going back just to visit Native Son!! Go try them out!!! You will thank me later.
