Stopped in here after a day at Canton. First they could use a deep cleaning in the restrooms. The food was good. The service is local and it was a busy weekend so the place was busy. Food was a good price for what they serve. Place has a good reputation but to keep it they will need to make some updates and cleaning. What a great restaurant. You get free beans and cornbread with most meals, along with a salad bar trip and ice cream for dessert. I got the chicken fried steak and so did my wife, we both got fried okra. However I got brown gravy and my wife got white gravy. The brown was better hands down. The steaks were about a quarter inch thick with the right amount of batter. The okra could have been crunchier but was still very good. I preferred the chili beans over the pinto beans but both were great. Salad bar was decent and came with quite a few options. It would have been nice to have had a sweet vinaigrette but I settled for Italian dressing. Everything was really good and so was all the help. Our waitress was so nice and helpful. For dessert we had the choice of blue bell vanilla, buttered pecan or cookies and cream. All for a great price. You have to try this place. You will not be disappointed!! read more

The food is always delicious, but what really sets them apart is the staff and owners--they go above and beyond to make you feel welcome and build real relationships with their customers. The food was great. I had a cheese burger with fries. The fries were like Mom cooked when I was a kid. My wife ordered a baked potato. It was huge and perfectly baked. The service was unbelievable. Great!!! Lots ot extras such as pinto beans and chili beans. If that wasn't enough, they provided Blue Bell ice cream to everyone who wanted dessert. Service is good. Our server availed herself throughout the meal & we wanted for nothing. My mother & I had the 4 pc shrimp dinner with fries & included salad bar & bean bar. We were with a group of 8 people. Service was excellent, especially on a Sunday after church. The salad bar was fresh and with plenty of options. Drove down to canton for a business stop with my boyfriend and ended up stopping here after multiple unsuccessful attempts at BBQ from seemingly non existing places we found on maps lol. Honestly the universe led us to the right place , amazing food, amazing service, and the environment is nice and comfortable. My favorite burger place ever! Me and my hubby drive over 40 minutes just to have one of their delicious burgers and sweet potato fries, plus they have complimentary corn bread and chili beans plus ice cream for dessert. We haven't been able to find any other place as good as Ole West. Definitely would recommend to anyone who loves old school burgers with great tasting meat. We were on the road and wanted a restful, moderately priced, straightforward place to have lunch. I took a look at our options over the next 60 miles and we settled on the Ole West Bean & Burger in Canton. The Salad, Bean, and Soup Bar figured prominently in our decision and we had no regrets! Delicious! You can choose to have the bar alone or add it to anything it doesn't already come with on the menu. Ranch style or pinto beans (great pinto) and cornbread, one soup choice that varies daily and a pretty nice salad bar with homemade dressings and relishes for your sandwiches and meals. They have the small and large order type menu here. I had the large order ($10.95) fried catfish which was perfectly cooked. There were four meaty fillets which I shared with my husband (he did the bar only). The catfish was accompanied by a small serving of coleslaw and for an additional 0.95 cents, I had a very large portion of fried okra instead of fries/onion rings/sweet potato fries. If you want dessert, there's free Blue Bell ice cream - 4 or 5 varieties - to scoop out of big tubs and enjoy. They have nailed home cooking and offer the ease and satisfaction of a well done salad, bean, and soup bar. The seating is simply table and chair with plenty of elbow room. "Bean & Burger" is the place that someone will mention to you at least once if you spend any amount of time in Canton and the locals decide to share any information at all with you. If you want a burger that isn't the typical fare, go big or go home. It is a local institution. I wish I could have had the full in-house experience, but as usual, I was relegated to carry out. This means that I have to take the word of others as to the bean bar, the salad bar, and the in-house dining experience. The decor is the typical barnyard style Texas West that one might expect. A local artist, or possibly several, have created many works for sale that adorn the walls in almost every area. It's the rural homey experience one is probably thinking when they hear the name. Service was provided quite happily by the three or four servers I saw during my visit, all seemed very pleasant and welcoming, in fact, I was greeted by all that passed me, all of them smiled, and all of them were busy at the time. From my observations waiting for my food, they were attentive to their tables and well liked by the crowd that was there. I used a card, and there were no issues with their POS system, which sometimes happens with my cards when I'm not in a big city. But you are here for the food, so let's get down to brass tacks. I purchased three items for my small crew: chicken strips, the "Sissy Burger", and the Bacon Cheeseburger. Chicken Strip Basket The chicken strips are of a decent length. If you are familiar with the chicken strip world, then think more Raising Cane's and less Chik-Fil-A. Or Zaxby's. I don't know what the flavour was like, but I do know all of them disappeared before I got my burger open. I saw them one moment, they were gone the next, and a hand was very briefly aiming for my fries. They serve white gravy with these, which is probably not the best composition for a kid's plate. The fries never made it, instead were four pieces of Texas Toast. Again, not the best idea for a kid's plate when you specifically ask for french fries, hence the aforementioned creeping hand. Sissy Burger This is what you get when you hate yourself. It might be their way of punishing you for not getting a real burger. You get a hockey puck the size of a prominent fast-food chain single kid's meal burger, and less flavour. You are literally paying about five bucks for a twenty-five cent burger. Just don't. Go big or go home. Bacon Cheeseburger I asked for double meat. This is a 1/2 pound burger, to begin with. It broke in half in my hands because the bun simply couldn't handle what was going on there. I don't know about you, but when bacon, meat, and cheese are in your hands in any condition, you just don't complain. Besides, as one prominent fast food chain says, "If it doesn't get all over the place, it doesn't belong in your face." And since that chain is not here, they must be filling in. This is probably the best burger you will get in this area. I will admit to that. Those fries, though. I hope it was just a bad day, but they were solid on the inside, and hot on the outside. Someone failed at their fry station. I hope it's not a habit, but there is fear that it might be. Final Thought Your experience will be good, but your food might be hit or miss. Might as well go for the ambience and just so you can say you did. read more

A group of nearly 20 of us used this as a meeting point halfway between Longview and Dallas, and our waitress, Miranda, did an excellent job of delivering the correct orders, refilling drinks, and answering questions. The chicken fry is very good. Small portion is a lot of food for a senior. The free beans are good and they had free vegetable beef soup that was good but the ground beef in it was a little tough. My sirloin with shrimp was really a cheap cut that had a lot of fat like a ribeye. After cutting off the fat the 8 oz steak was more like 4 oz. The shrimp was a little iodiney but that is the norm nowadays unless they buy the best quality shrimp. The salad bar for $2 is a really good deal and very fresh. The free ice cream was disappointing because two of the three flavors were down to what sticks to the sides of the container and lots of people have had their hands in there by that time.
