Every town has that one restaurant that's been around forever. In Abilene, it's the Dixie Pig! In Canton, it's the DownHome Cage! Just look at that building, older than me! But this is the secret all the locals know about. When we got there, most of the customers were senior citizens, just like me! Hmmm, is there homestyle cooking headed my way? The daily special always has 2 choices, today was catfish or chicken fried steak. Glenda and I both chose the chicken fry. As you can see in the picture, the small was plenty for me! And delicious! My wife and I love this place we live close but come as often as we can. it's a breakfast and lunch place only they close at 2 or 3:00 I can't remember. And they are close Sunday and Mondays. It's always busy the staff is wonderful good Christian staff. Just a small town cafe. Where the locals eat we hear the staff call several people by name. They have a good following. I usually eat breakfast which is always perfect my eggs are cooked how I ordered them coffee hot and they keep your cup full. Everyone helps each other out. Grits, pancakes, chicken fried steak, eggs. If they don't have it, you probably don't need it. I recommend building your own breakfast, dousing it with tobasco and drinking coffee til you're twitchin'. They will get you in-and-out quickly. The service is great. Staff is extremely friendly. We went to the DownHome Cafe to be greeted by I swear the whole staff! This place is such friendly old school. Our waitress, SuzyQ was a pistol! We were told we "had to" try a pancake to share amongst us - we did...it was delish! We had the chicken fried steak, which was the real deal - not some prebreaded patty. Had grits for the first time - they were great! I can't say enough good things about this place. My only sadness is that I can't take this place and people back to California. Not only is everything "down home" the food is delightful and affordable! Home cooked EVERYTHING, but their pancakes are like no other!! My mom said they are the best pancakes she's ever had. I'm a biscuit and gravy person and that is very good too! I love the waitstaff...have you ever heard of Mel's Diner (the sitcom)? Wifey got the thick hamburger steak smothered with grilled onions, mushrooms, and brown gravy. It was awesome! The fresh homemade mashed potatoes were covered with brown gravy and they were delicious. We always look to visit small family owned businesses, judging by the average age of the patrons that clearly visit this place regularly, the food was flavorless and dry. I was determined to try this restaurant out. I always drive by this place. It's was so packed today. I had to circle around cause no parking space. Finally found one and step inside. Sign posted stating you seat yourself. Only one table was available, sat and order my food. Decor is that of old diner meets grandma living room with all the decorative dishes hanging on walls. I went with the daily special Roasted pork with 2 sides (chose mashed potato & salad) and cornbeard. Came out quick was pretty tasty good. I got pecan cobbler for desert it was ok. Man I was like only person in here under age 60 other than employees. It was like senior cafeteria lol. Well old folks know something cause food was down right home cooking good. The meat was fresh, perfectly cooked and the batter was awesome and perfectly crispy! I am a fan! The interior/décor is exactly what you would expect. The wait staff was friendly and efficient.
