If you're looking for a more upscale Japanese restaurant, Douzo fits the bill. Prices are definitely higher than the average sushi restaurant, but you're really paying for the decor and ambience. I came with a friend for dinner on Saturday night (they take reservations through OpenTable!) We shared the shrimp tempura, chef select sashimi, Douzo special roll, and tempura ice cream for dessert. The shrimp tempura ($23) was unexpectedly good, coming from someone who isn't the biggest fan of tempura. It came with assorted vegetables (pepper, broccoli, mushroom, sweet potato), as well as five pieces of shrimp. Unlike most tempura, it wasn't too heavy or oily - instead I found it to be light and crispy. The chef select sashimi ($32) was fresh and high quality. The Douzo roll ($18) was nothing special and I probably wouldn't get it again, especially given the price. We finished the meal with tempura ice cream ($7.50). It was my first time having fried ice cream so I didn't know quite what to expect, but the green tea ice cream and red bean topping really complemented each other. The batter, however, could've been crispier. Service was great here, and we were constantly attended to. I am super picky about my sushi places and this one did not disappoint. Was it my favorite ever? Maybe not but it was close! The atmosphere is sort of club-like with techno/house style music which threw me off a little bit (and the tvs at the bar were hilarious because they were about the size of a sheet of paper - just don't have them). I've definitely had better sushi for cheaper in the past. We gots bowl of edamame and fried gyoza as appetizers. Edamame was well cooked, but the gyoza was too soggy. I'd have gotten the same kind of quality from those from the grocery store. I didn't order the miso soup, but how is it $7 per bowl? You know those old trusted pair of jeans you can't seem to part with? This is the same kind of relationship I have with Douzo. I've been visiting Boston more often and always crave for sushi since I'm on the east coast. For a couple years, my usual order consisted of the Chirashi Bowl ($26). The variety of sashimi on a bed of sushi rice fills me up with approximately 13 pieces chosen by the chef. Another must is the "Ohitashi" ($6). For spinach lovers, try this if you haven't already. It's boiled spinach, drained and squeezed into bite sized stocks with a house made sesame dressing. This is definitely one of my favorites. I also ordered the Shiitake Mushroom Soup ($6.25) which had a decent amount of shiitake in a light broth. Good but probably won't order it again for that price. During dinner, I'll call and place my take out order and is ready within 20-30 minutes. You pick up your order on the side of the restaurant where they also offer pre-made items as well. I can see this restaurant getting busy for lunch because they offer great deals for bentos, sets, sushi and other Japanese favorites. The price seems reasonable for this part of the city. The interior is gorgeous with modern lightening and décor. I've had a drink at the bar which was hip, fun and lively. Overall, I'm rounding this from 3.5 to a 4 star experience because the sashimi was fresh and the cuts were ample. If you're in the mood for sushi in Boston, please (Douzo) try it out! read more

Duozo was really great. A little bit more of an upscale trendy type of sushi restaurant with great food. We started with the house salad with ginger dressing, which came topped with crispy onions. This was larger than most sushi restaurant house salads, which made it perfect for sharing. The only thing that was not amazing was the uni sushi, as the uni did not taste quite as fresh as some other restaurants. However, we ordered the sashimi chef's selection, which was very fresh, delicious, and beautifully plated. Along with these, we ordered the sweet miso yellowtail roll, which was very good even though crabstick / imitation crab is not my favorite. We also had the pan fried gyoza and the steamed shrimp shumai, both of which were very good. My brother had the wagyu beef bun, which he enjoyed very much, but noted that it did not taste very Japanese. Finally, we finished with the rack of lamb, which had a pesto sauce (chimichurri-like) and broccolini and the shiitake mushroom yaki. Both of these were incredible - the meat was so tender and perfectly cooked. The mushrooms definitely impressed us all, as it was delicious, complex, and tender. Maybe I just had high expectations or just made the wrong choices--it is a large menu--but this was a letdown. Agedashi tofu and crispy rice were at least standard. The rest, not so much. Octopus ceviche was not ceviche. It was overcooked octopus with julienned peppers and jalapenos sliced larger than quarters, with no acidity. Mushroom soup was really boring. The omakase...man, it was $38 and all the individual sushi items were +$7 for two pieces, with O-toro at $30, so that was a total red flag and I ignored it. Totally should've ordered a la carte. But then if it's going to be so dry and pedestrian and mostly flavorless (a few pieces actually had some seasoning), why would you call it Chef's selection? It's embarrassing to the chef! Seafood kaiyaki said it came on a half shell. It came in a ramekin, but whatever. What hurt was that it came blanketed in melted cheese. Kaiyaki is supposed to be shellfish with miso, eggs and stock, with mayo as an option. The cheese was just overkill. We didn't stay for dessert. Waiter said we shouldn't park on the street and instead park in the garage by the Equinox gym and they'd validate the ticket. Still had to pay $5 to get out. read more

Nabeyaki Udon was done perfectly and I loved the broth which wasn't too salty at all and you could taste good amount of vegetable in the broth.
