Donut Gallery is a small diner serving the classics. I ordered their fresh Orange Juice and the Key Biscayner. The Key Biscayner comes with 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, bacon, ham, or sausage, with grits or hash browns. The service was nice, but a bit rushed, I was glad I looked at the menu before walking in. Wow, this place is a gem! Laurie waited on me at the counter and she was so happy and pleasant. Ricky was cooking and made me an awesome breakfast. Over easy eggs and crispy bacon and grits....oh man were they good. Not too soft and not too lumpy. Just right. This place has a throw back feel with the decor. But above all, Donut Gallery Diner has been around a long time (established in 1972) and is a popular neighborhood institution; the most popular place for breakfast. And though breakfast is their basic thing and served all day long, they have a good menu of burgers, sandwiches, melts, etc. I had their Ted's Special which was really good with a sunny-side-up egg atop melted American cheese, ham, bacon, and tomato. Hmmmm. Where to start? The diner looks pretty interesting and when you arrive, it's a cool, cozy diner ala Happy Days. It's got a cool vibe! The lady behind the counter is a little "rough" and in a hurry to take your order. She'll quickly hand you paper menus that look like they've been wet and air dryer a few times. IF you ask for the corn beef hash, she'll tell you it's not homemade, but if you ask her what her favorite is, she says everything is delicious! Hmmmm. We went with cheese grits and a cheesesteak sandwich. The grits actually tasted really good and the cheesesteak was good too. The place has a lot of potential, I just don't know that we will be back. The chef who is making the food is a really nice guy. He came by and told me he eats his Philly the same way I ordered mine. Stopped in after seeing this place was a local "gem". I'm sorry but this is nothing short of a Walmart trip for great value food and a fryer. It's small but that's ok with us as long as the food is good we don't mind the set up. Party of 6 and it was just us in there. Two people ordered chicken strips. After two bites in realized the chicken was completely raw. Not a little pink. Pink like it was fresh off the butcher block. We let them know. They took the same chicken we had bit off and threw it back in the fryer... came out looking like crispy old grease. They didn't want the chicken anymore. The chicken was served with a plate of great value potatoe chips. To which the lady reaches her hand in the bag and hand dishes up the chips. (Pandemic alert) I ordered a Breakfast plate with French toast, egg, hash brown etc. the hash brown had clearly been cooked once or twice before. And from the cook time it confirmed that. Just a soggy, oily cake. The French toast about the same. One great value piece of bread dipped in egg. Very possibly the most depressing piece of French toast I've ever seen. The bacon is already cooked and sitting on a plate above the grill. Just chillin, waiting to be ordered and reheated. Overall this place was not it. I'm sorry but after times have changed since the early 70's and if they ever plan on attracting anyone more then the folks who grew up eating this crap they need to add a little more effort. It's ran by one person. Who during our whole time here didn't wash her hands one time. Took cash payment and went back to the grill to throw some more prepare bacon on the grill with her hands. Whoever wrote this is the best diner in south Florida... I have to largely disagree. Portions are small but the food was ok. They have hashbrowns but they are like the type you get at McDonalds - preformed and probably frozen. 2 eggs means to small eggs... and so forth. The people were very nice. Food was good. I really have no complaints but for the price there is no comparing against a place like Metro Diner or Lesters. read more

This little diner has been around since 1972 & is family owned. If you come here it must be for the food & the quaint dive diner experience. It is not for the amazing service, because the service is really just ok. & if you aren't in the mood for servers who are a little too comfortable & maybe rough around the edges, do not go here. The food is good, fresh but not the typical diner price (on the cheaper side) because it is not, -- I suppose the prices are reasonable for KB prices. You can choose to sit inside or outside, which we usually choose the later as inside is just a little too tight for my liking & I do not prefer to sit elbow to elbow at the counters. Do not come here if you are in a rush, it just won't work out for you. Lol - come with ample time, the experience will be much better. Making our way to Key West for Smart Ride festivities we stopped here as it's not downtown Miami! Now we've been here before on a yearly basis but I never rated them. It's not the food that brings us back it's the owners wife who serves us. I would say the food is typical diner style and maybe a tad bland but one of the few places you can go to get freshly squeezed orange juice! The place has been family owned since 1972 sitting in a strip mall with ample free parking! The establishment is not huge and really not good for large groups. Old fashioned counter and seating. It's so sml that really not much room between you and other guests so if you don't like tight quarters maybe you might not want to come in. We also looked in at Golden Hog but were overwhelmed by the size of that and lack of posted information, and staff being busy doing things. So the diner lady greeted us in that very friendly way of places that really want customers and we stayed. The island was very quiet this week due to weather, and there was only one other customer. We had corned beef hash and eggs, and a french toast. Both were ok, the hash good and crisp in fact, the french toast was two slices of ordinary bread like I make it at home, with some blueberries, a big sliced strawberry, and couple squirts of whipped cream, seem a bit overpriced for that, though it was enough to fill me up. Probably shouldn't criticize that pricing in an area such as this. Coffee was good and generously refilled. Staff was friendly. Husband enjoyed more than I did, I guess. Nothing really bad. Seating can be rather limited due to the size of the diner so don't plan on bringing any large parties. The staff was extraordinarily friendly and prompt. It seems this is a restaurant that gets many regulars. There were several customers who walked in and were greeted like long-lost friends - very cool. I ordered the Key Slammer and a double cheeseburger; and my girlfriend had the Key Biscayner. The food came out extraordinarily quick - maybe under 5 minutes. Both plates had the breakfast essentials - pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, and hash browns. The main rationale for the 3 stars is the mediocrity of the food. I didn't think anything was particularly great, nor terrible. The burger was more of same, just your average double cheeseburger. I've been to many breakfast diners all over Florida, and it's hard to justify a 50 dollar price tag (after tax and tip) for two coffees, two breakfast plates, a cheeseburger. The witch that greeted us at the front was very rushed and did not tell us what was going on the menu she didn't give us any water, and definitely didn't want to serve us we ordered our food and she gave it to another customer. She was blaming him for the orders being messed up but it was just her lack of enthusiasm that of the day. I really like the classic diner vibe but the service is chaotic. It took a while for the waitress to come and take our order and give us the check. She was a sweet woman and maybe overwhelmed because the service was all over the place. The iced coffee was horrible, 3/4 milk. When I asked for black iced coffee they seemed confused and when I finally received the coffee it was extremely watered down and I can tell they put it in the same cup as my old iced milk coffee. The only thing I would recommend for breakfast here are the pancakes. They were absolutely delicious even though they taste they were made from krustez pancake mix but I like krustez so it's cool.
