Non-vegan reviewer here. NON-VEGANS BEWARE. If you've read my review for Cinnaholic, you know how I feel about vegan sweets. Well, Yelp twisted my arm and I found myself here on a Saturday morning. I live fairly close to this place, so there was really no excuse. We picked out an assortment: Philz coffee, blueberry, lemon poppyseed, salted caramel, orange creamsicle, and vanilla. These six donuts cost us $15!!!! Geez. They are not cheap. The donuts were meant to be cake-like, but I found them overly dense and a bit on the dry side. Some of the icings were melting as soon as I opened up the bag outside of the donut shop, so if you're planning on buying some for transit or as a gift, avoid the lemon poppyseed because that stuff just got all over the other donuts. The salted caramel was SO salty to me. I wouldn't get it again. I think my favorite was the blueberry. The Philz was too dry. Okay, maybe two stars is a bit harsh, but I won't be back here. Not only are they too expensive for someone who isn't vegan, but the donuts weren't any better than the $1 ones I can get at most any donut places. Also, the older gentlemen that helped us out was kind of pushy, and after we had paid for our donuts, he used his bare hands to smash a fly into the counter and that just grossed me out. If you're looking for an awesome vegan breakfast pastry, I'd choose Cinnaholic. read more

This is my second time coming to this restaurant. The first time I came here was actually really good. I probably would have given it a 4 star, but oh how times have changed. This place looks more and more run down as the days/months go by. When we were seated, I felt like I wanted to clean the table up with a hot rag and mop the floor. This was 1 star, 2 at best written all over it. This wasn't even edible in my opinion. They need to learn Waffle making 101 from my baby because he makes the BEST EVER homemade waffles, I've ever tasted. Aside from the hot mess above, we also ordered Pesto Scramble ($9.00) and a side of House made Tempeh Bacon ($3.00). The scrambler was actually good. I would consider ordering this again. As for the Tempeh Bacon...once again it was burnt. What is up with the cook? I wonder when he put the food on our plate, did he once even think to himself..."would I eat this?" I tell you what, if it was me cooking and my food was burnt, I sure as hell would not serve it to anyone. With disappointment in my eyes, my baby decided to turn my angry face upside down and ordered us 2 donuts. The Fritter was awesome!! I give that bad boy 4 stars, I would give it 5 if it was served warm. As for the donut, we ordered the special chocolate donut...it was disgusting. Hard and dry!!! The icing just flaked off. Even coffee couldn't wash this bad boy down. I use to like this place but no longer...they have gone down hill. The quality of their donuts are mediocre, the facility is a red flag for health services, and seriously servers if you're going to wear "booty short" atleast make it clean. Dang what did you do, not wash it for a week and decide to wear it to work? On another note, if someone is rolling up a joint at a nearby table, you may want to tell them to put it away and not just look the other direction and pretend you didn't see anything. OMFG!!! vegan/organic...hoped it would be better. The cake donuts were okay, not otherworldly, as I had somehow hoped they might be.' The vegan reuben tasted fine...but the "locally made kraut" was SO sparse...literally maybe 8 strands of it...NOT your typical reuben at all. The sandwich was also pretty small as far as the amount of tempeh. It came on Dave's bread, so it was seedy and sweet, not a zingy rye. I liked it...just felt ripped off sanwhich fillers, ya know? Got a large fries to share...was quite small actually. And the fries were really chunks of potatoes....not strips, like normal french fries. They should call them fried potatoes, not french fries. quite a gritty hood, indeed............ I also felt somewhat annoyed by tthe man-boy using the WIFI while eating cruelty-free donuts while wearing the hoody which declared "my body is not a graveyard"...yet he went out front to smoke twice during my meal and it sucked right into my face on current of wind.....well, it may not be a tomb for turkeys or a sepulchre for salmon, but it's a chamber of many toxins from the smokin', dude....cough...cough...pew. read more

Hit or miss for me. Sometimes they're fresh, sometimes they're not. On my last visit, despite going within 30 mins of them opening, my donut was stale and crunchy. I've tried different flavors over the years and honestly I can't tell the difference. read more

Was hungry for something healthy and light. Ordered the pesto scramble with avocado and honestly didnt find anything special about it. $13 for something I could make at home, but I guess I paid for the convenience. Parking was easy, theres some on the street, and the interior is really casual and nothing fancy. They sell day old donuts for $3 a box. The place could be a little cleaner. Pepple's Donuts - Donut Farm - Oakland Some of my first vegan donuts were Pepple's donuts before they even had a store-front. I was always impressed, so when I heard that they finally had a store-front, I was very excited. Unfortunately, it did not leave up to the hype. Not only did they not have any of the raised donuts that they advertised, they did not have much of anything else either. The store itself was very depressing and run down. It was dark, small, dingy and unappetizing. I was told that the reason they did not make any raised-donuts, or apple fritters was because the building's electricity could not generate enough power for the machine that was needed to make raised donuts. WTF?!? In reviewing Pepple's donuts, I am torn because the actual donuts I did get were good, but when you compare them to the vegan donuts at Psycho Donuts in Campbell, or the cinnamon rolls at Cinnaholic, they just don't hold up. I really like the idea of Pepples Donut Farm and while my vegan burrito was decent, it wasn't anything amazing...especially for almost 10$. I like the casual atmosphere and the relaxed vibe it brings but I feel the prices are a little steep. I understand vegan food requires fresh, cooked to order ingredients but the little things like charging 3$ for a tea bag is just too much. The burrito came with vegan sausage which had some spice to it. I enjoyed it but without the avocado that I added, it would have been a little dry. On the way out we grabbed a salted caramel, blueberry, lavender earl grey and pumpkin donut. The pumpkin was our favorite and while the blueberry was pretty it tasted nothing like blueberry. The lavender and earl grey only tastes faintly like earl grey and leaves the lavender to be desired. This place gets a lot of business and is worth a try if you don't mind spending a few dollars more on each item. I commend them having an all vegan restaurant and any donut lover who has gone vegan should come and experience this place. read more

So in love that I'm actually updating my review to tell you not only about weekend brunch but also about the freaking amazing chikn ranch sandwich that at under 9 dollars and freaking delicious is amazing for lunch. Being insanely close to work, I've introduced and converted a number of people to the vegan donut way of life but I now want to make a PSA that the vegan food that is not a donut here is still quite amazing. On weekends, go for the chikn and waffles. Oh man, that is some good chikn. I should actually postscript this all by saying it is very rare that I crave a dish with fake meat. However it is also very rare of a day that I don't crave that flipping chikn ranch sandwich. Any store with the "farm" or "factory" in its name makes me feel excitement as if they have some assembly line or food-making process for you to observe. My vegan friend informed me the vibe was more like the Nabolom Bakery in Oakland. Sure enough, as soon as I entered and saw the colors on the walls and the chairs, I felt like I was back at the Berkeley co-op I once lived in. It was no shock to me that it used to be called Peoples instead of Pebbles. Donuts to the People, y'all! I ordered half a dozen donuts because they were smaller than your average cake donuts. I know some people can't stomach oily foods, and as a warning, these reek of fried greasiness like a funnel cake. The good part about them was that the outside had a nice crunch while the inside stayed moist. The ones I had were all like cake donuts in texture and the flavors were pretty subtle. The blueberry donut was the only one which tasted like its name. Considering the price of around $3.25 apiece, the spacey workers, and the size and quality of the donuts, I would go to another vegan bakery such as Timeless Coffee in Piedmont, which has better hours and does not run out of items before it closes. read more

5 stars for yummy organic CAKE donuts! This is a modest-looking shop on San Pablo Avenue. Don't judge the donuts by the appearance of the shop...it looks run down, with a hodge-podge of mismatched furniture. In the little display case, you will find the many flavors available. There are staples like lemon poppy, blueberry, coconut, cinnamon sugar, etc. There are also some that are on rotation, such as strawberry, salted caramel, Meyer lemon, Philz coffee, matcha green tea, etc. I really appreciate that they only sell cake donuts, since raised donuts are abundant everywhere. We had the coconut and caramel donuts. The caramel donut was soft. The coconut one was a little drier and closer to the texture of bread than cake. You can tell there was hardly any sugar in the dough itself, but all the flavor comes from the glaze. I really liked the consistency of the caramel, and my friend liked the coconut one. They were about $2.75 each (some people may find the price preposterous, but it's organic and cake with many great flavors) or you can get half a dozen for $13. We also brought back a matcha green tea donut for a coworker, which she loved. read more

I wanted to like brunch here so badly, but it was pretty disappointing. The pesto scramble was decent, but nothing amazing. The breakfast burrito was less breakfast-y and more like a typical burrito (very bean-y) without the tastiness that can come with eating a burrito. I would consider giving this place one more try, but we weren't impressed. With that being said, if I were rating just the donuts I'd be giving full stars. read more

My boyfriend and I were visiting San Francisco and we were staying in Oakland. We are both vegan and I was afraid we wouldn't be able to find a place serving vegan breakfast on a Monday but Pepples had us covered! I had their fried chicken plate with collard greens and mac and cheese and my boyfriend had their breakfast burrito. He liked the burrito but wished they would have pureed the beans in the burrito. I wish I would have seen their Denver Omelette special before we ordered because I think he would have loved that! I personally, loved my meal, and the donuts and coffee too! Got the Oregon donut. Tasted like your average cake donut! I usually love yeast risen donuts, but this has a delicious crunchy outside. It's such a delightful bite into the sweet fluffy interior. The blueberries add a sufficiently tart sweetness to it. Just a little not worth the price when I could get a regular Risen glazed for a dollar. read more

Also, unlimited refills. $3 Biscuits & Gravy: Good. The gravy reminded me of a stroganoff. It was not the runny kind of gravy; it was thick and had mushrooms slices which was a nice touch. The biscuits made for a hardy breakfast and felt very much like comfort food. $9.50 Chick'n & Waffles: Should be called Chick'n & Waffle as there was only one waffle. It was pricy for the portion size and wasn't as tasty as other vegan Chick'n & Waffle dishes I have had (really not too many). The Chick'n was a patty that seemed like it was bought and cooked without any other prep, so it just tasted like any other soy meat. The waffle was bland. $12.50 Donuts: I have had their donuts at Philz before, and they're great! I love the variety of flavors and combos available. BEST VEGAN DONUTS EVER! Unfortunately he customer service needs serious work. No one we engaged with was friendly. I almost felt as though we were bothering them by being there. They didn't give us all of the donuts we asked for, even after confirming, and they opened 10 minutes late ( the kitchen still wasn't open, just the donuts were ready). I have tried (and loved) Pebbles donuts bought from their vendors, but have never been where the magic happens. Today was that day for me, and it was magical. We went to the place where donuts are made... Donut Farm. My cousin and I had one of the cutest and most kind servers ever. She was patient while we poured over the single page menu and asked silly questions. She brought us a donut to keep busy with while we waited for our brunch. My cousin demolished a breakfast burrito of the perfect brunch size, and I savored every bite of the seasonal scramble. And this place gets how hash browns are supposed to be, I didn't have to ask for them to be crunchy! There was donut artwork for sale on the wall and a super chill vibe in the shop. The employees all seemed genuinely happy to be there and didn't appear stressed when a line formed for takeout donuts. Unlike some places who appear to be trying to lure a hipster crowd, this place feels authentic and non judgmental. A note on the menu made me want to visit them everyday, "This is a non-GMO restaurant, and we provide healthcare to our employees. Thank you for supporting our desire to create more sustainable foods." Needless to say, I will return soon. read more

Here's what you need to know: SALTED CARAMEL DONUT. The best $3 I ever spent in my life. They didn't have any in the case when I arrived, so they specially made me one! What's better than an organic, vegan donut? A FRESHLY MADE just for you organic vegan donut. Mmmm. There is no shame in my game -- I licked every last bit of caramel off the wax paper. They also have several other kinds of donuts (lemon poppyseed, chocolate-covered, coconut), and Fat Bottom Bakery provides them with cupcakes if you're in the mood for a more dessert-y treat. Picked up a dozen donuts from here on a weekday morning for the office. Everyone was pleasantly surprised that they tasted pretty good! The different glazes added a nice variety too. The donuts taste and have a texture more like a dense cake (think old-fashioned but heavier) but still managed to keep some moisture so they weren't too-dried out. The staff was helpful with selecting a variety and even getting some "fresh ones" from the kitchen, but at $29/dozen they're a tad pricey for donuts Summary - if for whatever reason vegan is your only option, by all means enjoy these tasty sugar glazed cake bites. Anyone who incorporates candy cap mushrooms into donuts is good in my book. Candy caps are mysterious mushrooms, tasting similar to maple syrup. The cake donut with candy cap mushroom glaze was a maple, mushroom treat. Although we went specifically to try the donuts, the very edited breakfast menu of only two items - one savory and the other a sweet option - was tempting. I am a HUGE donut guy and have eaten many, many donuts in my lifetime, and I think I can safely say that these are the best I've ever had. The five stars are for donuts only because I didn't get a chance to try their other brunch offerings. The two things that make these donuts so great are: (1) a variety of interesting flavors and (2) they are dense and filling. When I went, I was able to try earl grey, orange creamsicle, and green tea matcha - all were flavorful and delicious. You might experience a bit of sticker shock when seeing the prices, but rest assured, they are well worth it. I can easily put away a half dozen bargain bin donuts, but just two from Pepples were enough to fully satiate me. Pepples is an excellent example of quality over quantity. read more
