Family owned business who has my daughters' orders memorized. We particularly like the old fashioned plain, the donut holes, and the reliable quality. They take apple pay which is a plus. They often throw in an extra which I very much appreciate! read more

A Five Star Review Working in Berkeley for nearly six years Happy Donuts is the place to go to during my lunch break. I would get a donut here during my lunch break or after work. I will say that they do make a great sandwich that comes with a bag of chips and soda. The service at Happy Donuts has been fantastic! They know what I want to get before I say anything. They have given me the best service since I been working in Berkeley. It does tend to get busy during the morning. I have seen people ordering boxes of donuts or just getting coffee. I will say I use to order Hot Chocolate there but I now just drink Orange Juice. Keep up the good work serving people in Berkeley Happy Donuts read more

Service was 10/10 My boyfriend and I both left saying the guy that helped us was so nice. Quick & friendly conversation and he threw in some extra donuts for us (we came towards the end of the day). Donuts were great ofc. read more

I have lived in the area for 20+ years and have never tried this donut shop. I was driving by, late, 7pm-ish and they had just locked the door. But she let me. Yelp says they close 530pm but they are definitely open later. I got a buttermilk ($3.50), twist ($4.50) and fritter ($4.50). Sort of shocking how expensive donuts are nowadays, but I was here, it was time. I will pass on the buttermilk, too nondescript. However, the fritter. Yes, definitely their shining star. I will be going back for the fritter and likely the XL twist. She threw in a raised glaze donut and this too was strong! Very fresh, not too oily, super fluffy and the perfect amount of glaze. This shop has been here for decades and now I know why. read more

Nancy and her family have been baking her FRESH donuts and other classic goodies in our neighborhood for so long I cannot remember when (at least over 2 1/2 decades). Worth the stop as you come back and forth on Gilman or travel on nearby San Pablo. I cannot list the many delicious types my kids and now grandsons have been growing up on. Don't go to Whole Foods for classic sweets! Park across the street to walk directly into her doors , or take a short walk 10th Street!!! read more

Definitely a real place to get donuts. If you're in the area stop by. They sorta have a bunch of options for food and drink.

This place caught my eye when I went to a store near by and it hit my craving. They also had a HUGE doughnut!!! It was almost the size of my newborn. Doughnuts aren't too expensive compared to other places and the guy who helped me was very nice. If I'm in the area again I'll be cooking back for sure. read more

Look - it's another Happy Donuts! These places are all pretty much the same. Except this one had a friendly attendant, and that alone is worth one more star. It's local, so I'm sure I'll return for one of those late-night sweet-tooth attacks. BB read more

If you want the best darn apple fritter EVER then you need to go here!!! I am an apple fritter connoisseur and this place is #1

I'd stop here again probably. There wasn't anything that stood out as extra exceptional at this place but it was decent . Although they did have some gynormous twists . $9. for a gynormous twist &a choc. milk . read more

Excellent, fresh, tasty confections. Got a glazed donut and they included a couple of free donut holes. The glazed was huge, but light Ava airy. Staff was all smiles! This place looks divey on the outside, but it's worth the visit. Everything in the display case looked so good. I gained 10 lbs just looking. Yumm. read more

Coffee costs less than competition in the area. I'll take a no frills $2.50 medium sized coffee over Peet's small size $4.75 any day of the week. read more

Hands down the best donuts we've had! Daughter played up the road in a soccer game and we went to try a spot for lunch and walked past this shop. Bought a few donuts and literally went right back after lunch to get more! The large forearm sized twists were the family fave! Sooooo good! Coming from Brentwood we had to give local spots a try and so glad we stopped in here we will definitely make sure to stop here again when back in the area. read more

Don't mind the boxes on the floor... cuz the donuts are Yuu-u-Mo! Been to other Happy donuts in Sac, Palo Alto, etc. always good. I like original glaze donuts- they make me smile. read more

Very unassuming place. I went here after I saw the sign from the REI parking lot. I needed the energy after biking 6 miles to get my bike tuned. Maple bar was huge and delicious, I also got a few old fashioned donuts and found that they threw in a few extra. Small local business that won't cost you an arm and a leg, and if you're a donut fan, this is a great no frills donut shop. read more

5/18/22 I wouldn't say that the doughnuts, or the dude behind the counter, were particularly HAPPY to see me..... but hey I'm fine with that. For better or worse, nothing really to report here. Just a super average, straight down the middle, doughnut shop. All the usual styles are represented, and everything looked clean. My glazed yeast doughnut tasted good, but same as any Winchester's. The not-so-happy-dude did toss 2 extra doughnut holes in my bag that I didn't order, which was great cause I was heading to an art supply store down the block and got to pop them and chomp before entering. Guess I'm feeling nice today... 3.5 rounded to 4/5 #doughnuts #donuts #donuthole #doughnuthole #berkeley read more

You ever want just an iced coffee and a donut or 2? Then stay away from the Happy Donuts on Gilman, who simply refuse to serve iced coffee. Extremely disappointing. read more

These guys make great donuts and they also have been providing dozens and dozens of donuts to the Berkely Homeless Shelter for years. They are a true blessing to the community. read more

Good donuts. Price is fair. The workers are kind and nice. I'd say overall good. Nothing that shines or stands out.

Better than Krispy Kreme and it's a local business. My strawberry donut tasted great and trust me, I'm definitely not a donut person. Not too sweet, fresh, and great mouthfeel (not too mushy or bread-y). Good stuff! read more

This is my go to donut shop when I have a craving for an apple fritter. I guess it is the location, as it is an easy drive to get to from my place. Or before going to work, or after work. The apple fritter is large and heavy. It is a meal in its own right. The fritter is filled with small apple pieces throughout the fritter. It is glazed all over, so I also get my sugar rush too. I should try the other donuts, but my eyes always head toward the apple fritter. From there, my stomach says "apple fritter" for the final decision. read more

Great service and staff and the donuts are really good and affordable. The ham and cheese croissants are a must try as well.

I have fond memories with this joint! I love how they are a no nonsense, classic donut shop. Some small tables for eating indoors, and a small variety of drinks as well. A major perk is that they open later than most breakfast places, so you can get your donut fill anytime during the day read more

Came by here on my way to work, donuts are decent. I'd say their worth coming back for.

Giant cinnamon buns and giant cinnamon twists, cakey donuts and all fresh. Love the donut holes added to my order whenever I or hubby stop in. read more

I got 3 free donut holes after ordering a bacon egg muffin sandwich and 4 donuts (2 glazed, 2 plain). Total was $7.15. Unfortunately I dropped the bag and 2 donut holes rolled out. I suppose the universe is trying to tell me to watch my weight. I appreciated that the sandwich wasn't overly salted, and the bacon was crunchy even though it was reheated from the tray I chose it from. I'd come back try other things, such as the ham and egg croissant. read more

Best donut shop near the University. Fair prices and always fresh donuts. Staff is also nice & friendly!

Very good donuts, even though it's a bit expensive for struggling college students like me. But it is a family owned shop, so I understand completely. Very nice people! Would recommend, plus they are open very late. read more

Happy Donut is an unassuming, no-frills donut shop offering all of your classic, standard donut treats. I've been to many other donut places in Berkeley and I keep returning to this establishment because of the low prices, consistent quality and excellent customer service. To the latter point: the person behind the counter almost always tosses in a few extra donut holes, or a free donut for me and my partner to try. It's such a small but kind gesture as well as a smart business move because I end up getting exposed to new flavors or products that I am more likely to purchase in the future - a win-win for everyone! My personal favorites are the classic glazed donut or the maple bar filled with custard. Pro tip: come in the morning as early as possible when they are fresh! read more

I just came here, and the selection was good, and the lady behind the counter was very nice!

They greeted us, super friendly. The donuts were soft and sponge. Honestly loved them and they threw in another free donut for us. which was yummy! Definitely will be coming back. read more

(See pic) Before the drive up to Tahoe, we all needed more than a quick sandwich, we needed a bathroom break, some gas, a good cup of coffee, some really sugary fatty rich donuts. Happy Donuts made us very happy and floating! We had the cream filled chocolate donut, regular donut, brownies... yes all of them with the big coffee. The "China man" owner was super nice while we're waiting for the fresh brewed coffee. This place is simple with a few tables and chairs. It's clean and just enough to cater all the customers. It's hole in the wall kinda donut place! The owner was so nice that he stuffed a few small donut balls in the bag and I only found out after we left! Now I call that a big sugar bonus!! read more

This ain't no Tim Horton's. And compared to Happy Donut in Albany and Alhambra Donuts in Martinez, this place is a little more expensive. However, the extra donut holes that you get when you buy is a nice touch. And it's a convenient stop on the way from home to I-80 and the coffee is actually pretty good. My usual favourites (chocolate buttermilk, unfilled maple or chocolate bar or cinnamon role) are also tasty and worth the stop. read more
