I pass Rainbow Donuts quite regularly, located on San Pablo Ave in Berkeley. It's a pretty pink building from the outside and for a recent order, I actually chose a food delivery service instead of making it over in-person for my kiddos recent birthday breakfast surprise . We ordered two decorated donuts (we left a note that it was a birthday, and to choose something fun), hash browns, an egg and cheese croissant, and coffee. They were having a special if you spent x amount, your coffee was complimentary or in all reality, I think it came to about .25 cents! They chose the cutest panda bear donuts as the decorated donuts, and it was such a fun breakfast vibe full of all the whimsy. They included a bag with napkins and coffee creamer which was a nice touch. And omg, the egg/cheese croissant...so good! There is truly something special about the discovery of breakfast croissants at spots that don't typically market them. (See pic) but the croissant was hearty and layered high with gooey cheese and warm egg. The croissant was warm, buttery, and it seemed like potentially put in a press. Chefs kiss, no notes. I noticed you could add meat and/or avocado, but it was perfect paired down. All in all, a food delivery gone right! Last time I visited was 2019 and the cake donuts are still as amazing as I remembered. Only came in for donut holes and 2 donuts and the lady generously gave us extras to go! Made my day. Maybe she could tell I was having a hard time choosing amongst their variety of flavors. Cake donuts are a must. Tried blueberry, ube and red velvet ones. Texture is soft, not too dense nor dry, with great flavor. Very chill store, friendly staff, good vibes. read more

Solid donut selection! The chocolate with sprinkles was delicious. Simple but a classic. As was the case with their basic glaze too. My husband and I got the blueberry fritter and creme brulee donuts to try but we weren't impressed. Might just be due to personal preference of crunch for fritter and idk if we are creme brulee donut people lol. We def will come again for the classics and to try other fun flavors. read more

Our favorite donut place! I'm always hesitant to write reviews of my faves because I don't want too many people in there. But here it goes. The variety of donuts you can get here is unbelievable. The fancy it up by adding cereal on some. Or making little unicorns. When we order we usually get a good half a dozen cause you are already here why are you gonna just get one!? Go for it! The service is quick too and usually if they don't have the one you want they will give you a suggestion on what could be similar. Love it! read more

Saw the inviting pink sign from across the street as we ate dinner. We got in right before closing and were greeted by the wonderful a lady behind the counter. Got an apple fritter and a couple donuts. She gave us a couple others to try too. So hospitable. She packed up our box and bag and noticed we ended up with about a dozen extras on the house. Such a nice surprise! Their donuts are light and fluffy with tons of flavor. If you haven't been here, this should be your go-to donut spot. They also sell lotto tickets too! read more

Such cute donuts here! Happened to walk by with a friend so we stopped in. I loved the unicorn donuts -- those would have totally been my go-to as a kid! All of them were so beautifully decorated. We got Ube Crumb Donuts, and they were so good! A gorgeous purple color with crumb coating. They were so soft yet still had that cake donut texture, and the ube flavor actually came through! Deeply impressed. There's some tables and seating inside, though I struggled to find any napkins. There was no line when we were there at 12:30 PM on a Thursday, but I figure the mornings must be busier because not all of the different donut varieties were there. The lady serving us was efficient yet patient, allowing my friend time to decide what she wanted. Would definitely like to try their raised donuts next time! read more

Honestly, I'm not a fan of cake style donuts, I'm more of a raised donut kinda person. Unfortunately, it seems cake donuts are the . Regular or vegan, I just haven't liked them. They're heavy, oily and not good. I have no idea what Rainbow does, but their vegan donuts are surprisingly good!! My brother got me 3 for my birthday and I wasn't sure what to expect. First off the service here is immaculate. Everyone is SO nice and helpful. It feels like they hook me up everyday, but I think that's actually just their incredibly adorable prices. And I'm talking about fire deals for every incentive donuts. The ambiance is soo cute and honestly comforting since pink is my fav color. Donut wise- the cake ones are my fav. Stocked up at Rainbow Donuts before a long drive. I enjoyed my toasted cheese bagel with cream cheese. Then I got three donuts, all of which were good. 1. Creme Brulee donut - A couple of bites before you get to the custard center, but when you did, the combo of custard and brulee top was exceptional! This was my fav. Very sweet, as to be expected. 2. Smores donut - a chocolate donut with graham cracker crumbs on top plus a big marshmallow in the middle. 3. Fruity Pebbles donut - some sort of a glaze with Fruity Pebbles on top. Maybe dip the donut further in that sticky glaze and allow the fruity pebbles go down the side or even all around? The donut a bit was too big and fluffy for the toppings. read more

What a cute bakery! Finally got to try this shop for national donut day and I was so pleasantly surprised. There was such a large amount of variety, it was almost too hard to make a choice. I went around 6:30 am, so I got to see the full menu. Everything was so fresh and it smelled so good in there. The donuts were just being made, you could see the icing still needing to firm up! I ended up going with a lemon blueberry donut and a creme brûlée (one of my favorite desserts!) Both were so delicious! The woman helping me also threw in a free chocolate cake donut for national donut day, which was really nice of her :) I will definitely be coming back to try more of their extensive menu!! read more

Very cute little donut shop. Stopped by around 11am on Sunday and we picked a couple donuts and they gave my 3.5 year old a free donut hole. The workers were very nice. I'm not the biggest donut person and I love an egg bagel so I tried the sausage egg and cheese on a jalapeño bagel and it was delicious. Some friends had brought a box of donuts to an event last weekend. I am uncertain as to the flavor of the donut I had, as it featured green-colored icing with black seeds. All I can attest to is that it was exceptionally delicious. I regret not having the opportunity to try some of the other donuts in the box, but unfortunately, one donut was more than sufficient. The sign outside caught my eye instantly ! Donuts are bae and I had to indulge. The price point on these were not that bad, I got an old fashioned donut and 1/2 dozen donut holes for $4. My review is solely based on a Door Dash delivery. We got a Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Croissant and half a dozen donuts. SO. GOOD. The croissant was flaky and chewy. I usually have to add some seasonings to my breakfast sandwiches and this sandwich did not need anything! Perfect amount of flavor and portion size. The donuts were great too! I've never had a bad donut here...do bad donuts exist? Yes! But not here. Is it a foodie spot? Not really. Anything over the top amazing? Not quite there BUT I can honestly say that when it comes to Donut shops they offer variety, customer service, hygiene and a smile. Flavors are consistent. Rainbow has your ordinary variety but also speciality flavors occasionally like Ube or cereal topped donuts. My son's go to sport for decorative donuts that resemble unicorns and pandas. This is the second year he has made me custom order donuts here depending on his ever changing obsession. Last year was Pokemon, this year it was Roblox. Rainbow is a cute shop right on San Pablo off of University. Shop is clean, a few tables, a self serve fridge with beverage offerings. The actual donuts are house in clear glass, well lit, really clean and well labeled. Overall black and white Decorative with Pink, few cute sayings on walls. Staff has always been friendly, often gives my son an extra treat. Answers questions and when I had questions they could not answer they were kind enough to place owner on the phone. A Berkeley staple. Solid shop and people. Definitely a recommendation for custom donuts. We will continue to gladly go back time after time. read more

I've been working in the area recently and heard great things about this place especially because they have vegan donuts. I'm not big on sweets but when i do indulge, vegan is the way to go for me! Decided to pop in this morning for a breakfast option -in addition to a WIDE VARIETY of donuts, they also make breakfast sandwiches. Your choice of breakfast meat along with egg & cheese or for the non-meat eaters egg & cheese which was my choice. You can get your sammie on a bagel, croissant or gasp- even a glazed donut! BE STILL MY HEART! I opted for the flaky croissant- did not disappoint. They cook it to order and it wasn't too long of a wait considering there was a huge line forming right at 9 am. I also had a bite of their strawberry-rhubarb breton which was also delicious, kinda like a shortbread cookie with cream and strawberry. They are on the pricey side but that's expected in the Bay Area. The reason for the two stars: of the last three times I've been there, they have gotten my order wrong TWICE. Once in a while is totally an acceptable accident but two thirds wrong is really poor service. The workers are nice but not exactly approachably friendly. They take the order in front of the register, receive payment, and then step over to the counter to collect the items. The issue is when you (I) order a lot of stuff, they get collected behind the counter and placed into a large shopping bag so you can't see what you are getting (or not getting). They walk around behind the counter grabbing stuff and those that have paid stand in a small corner away from the purchasing line so it's difficult to see what they do (or don't) pick up. The first time I came home to find my order of half loaf (they sell the large ones by halves, if you want) missing. I brushed it off as an accident. I don't live close enough to go back before they close and I wouldn't have proof anyways. This last time I went, they didn't put in a pastry! At this point, I'm down about $16 and beginning to wonder if it's deliberate. *sigh* So now I have to decide whether I boycott them altogether or only buy one or two items so I can see what I am getting or be the weirdo that takes out every item in a large shopping bag to double check their work. *sigh again*

The bakery itself seems to mainly be a takeout spot, with minimal indoor seating which felt pretty inconvenient given the limited space for customers, however it did seem to serve more of a purpose as a waiting area anyways. The structure of the bakery leaves a bit to be desired as well, as we found the glass display cases as the only form of menu, so being in the front of the line while still deciding what to order caused some unnecessary anxiety. Regardless of those nitpicks, the baked goods themselves were pretty good! Service was instant, and all of the treats looked delicious--it was hard to choose what we wanted! Our favorites were the Thai Tea and Ube Coconut Mochi Donuts. Both had really strong flavors--the Ube in particular was very clear in comparison to most other Ube desserts in my experience. The textures of the mochi donuts were really well done too, with soft exteriors and chewy, glutinous interiors. The same can be said about the Mochi Muffins, though with crunchier parts around the edges. We found the contrast of textures to actually work really well! However, the flavors of the Muffins were lacking a bit--the Red Velvet didn't stand out much, with the frosting tasting a bit too sweet, and while the Five Spice had a really interesting flavor, it was also a bit too sweet, drowning out the more unique citrusy flavor. Overall, however, all four of the goods we had were enjoyable eats, and would definitely return some time to try out other flavors!

The shop is on the smaller side -- with no seating inside, so it's strictly an order and take to-go type of a spot. Although there were a bunch of delicious pastry items in the case, my eyes laser focused on the canelés. It's hard to find a well made canelé and the ones here were incredible. I was lucky enough to show up right when the canelés had been pulled from the oven, so they were warm to the touch when I received them. The outside of the canelé had a thick, crunchy crust and contrasted nicely with the fluffy, spongy, light texture inside. The caramelized, browned bottom provided a slightly bitter note to contrast the sweetness. With a cup of coffee, this is honestly one of my favorite breakfasts. I would 100% stop by again just to pick up a canelé.

I'd honestly recommend all 6 of the pastries we tried, especially since the prices for this place are lower (~$6) than some other high quality bakeries around the Oakland and SF area. The decor inside the bakery is really cute and there are quite a few small tables you can sit at to enjoy the baked goods. Service was nice and fast. The raspberry topping was just a bit too tart and sour for my taste. Even though not everything was a hit for me, I would definitely come back and give this bakery another chance, especially since we arrived so late and missed out on many of their most popular items.

While La Farine has a smaller pastry selection than its neighboring bakeries on College Ave., it has an impressive variety of baguettes and sourdough loafs. I ordered a mini kalamata olive loaf, which was the perfect size for snacking. Service was quick and efficient, and I took my bread to-go to enjoy at home. I appreciated how the loaf is baked with more olives per square inch than any olive bread I have ever tasted. The sourdough had a good chew without being too tough and was soft and fluffy on the inside. The tangy sourdough and briny olives needed little else but were enhanced with a pat of French butter. On my next visit, I'd like to try La Farine's other sourdough loaves and baguettes.

Since there were not many people waiting for their order compared to when there was a huge line for the grand opening, I'm glad to have my drink as soon as possible. If there's another reason why there wasn't a Lishan oolong tea tasting, it's the schedule that never meets my day and hour to try one. Therefore, I have no need since Asha Tea House usually has seasonal tea drinks. If Chicha San Chen would find a rental space here in my hometown instead of downtown Berkeley, it'll be splendid to find out if it's just as good as Heytea at Metreon. But, it's best to leave it to Chicha San Chen to decide.

It's much more welcoming and spacious than the New York location (and significantly cheaper). The drinks are still quite expensive, though, and are based on a topping/flavoring system. Expect to spend around $7 on a drink here, more if you want something with complexity or toppings. Some teas are worth the cost and preparation, and others aren't. The green tea is quite good, especially with a bit of honey. The standard oolong is pretty ordinary, and I wouldn't pay the premium price for it. However, the Pouchong is distinctive and delicious. The condensed milk lemon series and fresh taro are also delicious, especially for those who avoid caffeine. I would recommend coming here if you are particular about teas with unique notes or are interested in their unique preparation/toppings! small edit: I would also highly recommend ordering ahead if you have Snackpass, as this location gets very busy with students.
