Came here for the first time tonight and was very impressed! We made a reservation online for 6pm, we arrived a bit early and were seated immediately. By 6:10, all tables were full, so I recommend making a reservation. Service was great and our food came out so quickly. We got the garlic edamame, corn ribs, half moon bay roll, wedge roll, and yuzu cheesecake. Everything was delicious! I eat meat but my fiancé is vegetarian so it was great to find a sushi place where he could eat everything on the menu. I wouldn't have guessed everything was vegan. We'd definitely come here again.

Super good vegan sushi and service was amazing! Service was fast and the quality was impeccable.

My first time trying sushi !! I know very late !! But better late than never !!! Good part all vegan , so vegetarians like me find it easy to try . We ordered Manila dune and Waimanalo rolls !! There good but on the sweeter side . We did not like either of them cos of the sweetness, then we ordered garlic edamame and miso soup . Both were good , edamame was yummm .. then ordered goma miso ramen it was yummm too !! And then ended with yummy blue Berry cheesecake !!

Came in on a weeknight and it was super busy. Waitress said that there was a 30 minute wait and to leave our number (she said we were second in line). There were people that came in right after us and were seated. I then waited 45 mins and come to find she never added us to the waitlist!!! The app added us to the waitlist late and said we were actually 8th in line. What a joke. I've been here before and the food was great, but please be more organized and efficient next time.

We had an amazing meal here!!! We ordered two different rolls- unfortunately I don't remember which but I feel like you can't go wrong with anything here. I am really looking forward to returning and trying more things on the menu. Got the mixed berry cheesecake for dessert and this is an absolute must. It was soooo yummy!!! Cheesecake was one of the things I didn't think I'd be able to find a good vegan version of but Tane's is a dream!!! I still think about it periodically. I am excited for when I can return

Came here on a weekend evening after making a reservation in advance. We were the first to be seated during our reservation - the restaurant fills up fast though there are about 5-6 sushi bar seats available for walk-ins. Overall we did not enjoy this place as much as we had hoped. Maybe we were biased because we had just gotten back from Austin where nori had the vegan sushi we've tried. But to start, the service here was not great. Even though we were the first to be seated, people next to us ordered first while we had flag someone down just to put in our order. We ordered two sushi rolls - the Pacifica, which was supposedly the most popular, and the Manila Dune. We actually liked the Manila Dune more because the Pacifica had random flavors in it that didn't go well together all the time. Like too much garlic in some parts instead of subtle flavors. The garlic ramen we ordered also had random strong wafts of garlic and so did someone's dish who sat next to me. It wasn't great. And what else I didn't like about the ramen is that the ingredients leaned more seafood such as vegan scallops and mushrooms and then a random patty that tasted like sausage. I think they are doing no one any favors by not making their soup consistent in expected tastes and textures. It was disappointing for sure. Our experience was just okay and I'm not sure we would come back.

I was just wondering if this Berkeley spot was related to Shizen in the Mission since the distinctly plant-based culinary approach seemed pretty similar to me (review: https://yelp.to/vNYPXTu3eJ). It turns out the trio of co-owners did indeed create Shizen and that this is the second location of Tane after they opened the first one in Honolulu. The signage was so subtle that I barely noticed the restaurant from the sidewalk. I was early on a weekday evening so I had no trouble securing a table across from an unshy Asian couple who looked like they ordered half the menu. I decided I needed a drink, so I ordered the $13 carafe of Sho Chiku Bai Nigori (Photo 7). I'm a fan of Takara Sake, so I was immediately pleased with the milky flavor and coconut notes. It was hard to decide what to order as they offer quite a robust menu. I first tried the $12 Shizen Shiitake, a rustic plate of a half-dozen shiitake mushrooms they stuffed with shredded tofu and matcha salt drizzled with a hoisin-like sauce (Photo 10). It was good, just a bit uneventful for my palate. My second dish was the $17 Wedge, a decorative specialty tempura roll with spicy tofu, green onion, ichimi chili pepper, sesame, spicy aioli, and sweet shoyu (Photo 9). It was a bigger serving than I was expecting. Not that I was complaining because it was packed with far more interesting flavors than the stuffed mushrooms. It was a bit challenging to pick up intact, but who the hell cares? I was dining solo. I decided to end my meal with a couple of $7 vegan nigiri orders, the Eggplant with Scallions (Photo 8) and the Shiitake (Photo 6). Genuinely delicious for vegan fare. Now that's the Shizen I remember. FOOD - 4 stars...vegan Japanese specialties with character and flavor AMBIANCE - 4 stars...subdued with tables well spaced SERVICE - 4.5 stars...cordial and quite attentive TOTAL - 4 stars...Shizen reborn in the East Bay RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? Did not expect vegan sushi to be this good. Joined the waitlist on yelp 30 min before we planned on eating, then we were immediately seated when we got there. Got the agedashi tofu , ewa, point reyes, and futo maki rolls. My favorite was definitely the wedge, but loved the spiciness of the point reyes too. Will definitely be back to try their other specials! Ambiance was nice, dimly light like a fancy restaurant.

The menu at Tane is imaginative and crafter with care. Every dish feels intentional - not just a substitute for something vegan but a standalone creation in its own right. The star of the show is Sushi- delicate rolls with flavorful ingredients like spicy tofu, veggies, avocado. The texture, balance and umami in each bite are on par with high-end sushi restaurant but without the fish This place redefines what vegan cuisine can be, especially in genre like Sushi.

Nasu is my fav appetizer. The barbers is one of my fav rolls. Point Reyes, sunset and pokai are also on my list. I used to love the spinach salad but they recently changed the dressing on it. Now it's not so vinegar-like. My preference is the previous version, but I'm certain everyone will enjoy the current version. Everything tastes fresh. Rolls are a little heavy on rice. Wait staff are always friendly. Place gets busy but be patient, it's worth the wait.

I'd like to preface this by saying I'm not vegan. And I love regular sushi. Most of my family is vegetarian/vegan, so came here with them. The restaurant itself is pretty small, on the outer edge of DT Berkeley. It has a more intimate vibe for dinner, with the dimmed lights. Service is nice and attentive. We ordered a pretty wide assortment of rolls and nigiris. It's definitely interesting. Flavors were good. I especially liked the tomato nigiri and the half moon roll. The Manila dune gave me king Julien vibes LOL also interesting flavors. It's definitely interesting! And I fully understand the appeal for vegetarians/vegans. I'd still rather eat a fish, but it's worth a try if you're interested! This place does vegan food well!

I've been here 3x in the past couple of months and the food never ceases to amaze me. I highly recommend making a reservation on yelp. There are not a lot of tables and it's frequently booked out. I am not vegan and love sushi yet this place blows my mind each time. Every roll I've tried has been fantastic and doesn't have me missing real fish. My favorite roll by far is the Pacifica and Pokai. If you can take the heat, the Point Reyes roll is also great. I've tried both the spicy garlic miso and shoyu ramen. I enjoy the spicy garlic miso ramen more. It's a bit creamier than the shoyu. The garlic edamame is also an amazing starter. Packed with flavor and they also give a good amount! This place is one of my top restaurants in Berkeley. Taste, service, vibes are all unmatched.

Food, service, and ambiance are all 5 stars. I absolutely love this restaurant and I think it's very creative. And I appreciate that it's really easy to make reservations via Yelp.

It was conveniently located across the street from the venue, and the unassuming outside of the restaurant did not hint at the amount of fun, ambiance, good food, and warm hospitality contained inside. First, there is the name. Not sure if it's some sort of play on words, secret joke, or if it's someone's actual name, but it works, kinda. It's kinda a restaurant, kinda a bar, kinda of a hangout, and kinda fun. The tiny entrance and plain facade reveals a bustling world of delicious food, tasty beverage, and lots of decorative eye candy to keep you looking around the space while you are hanging out with friends, on a date, or just relaxing after a long day. The decorations there are very upbeat, eclectic, fun, and distinctly Japanese pop culture. Posters, banners, flags, lanterns, toys, and trinkets can be found all over the restaurant, and made it fun to keep looking around and discover new novel things to look at. I did feel like I was in an authentic Izakaya somewhere in Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ebisu in Tokyo. The place had a lot of personality & personal flair in an otherwise, tiny & industrial small warehouse type space. Service was excellent. The host was the cute & personable Mina, who couldn't have been more accommodating, patient, friendly, and engaging. It was very busy, and even though it was our first time there, Mina made us feel welcome into their home and was also very helpful to guide us around their experience. The other staff were less engaging, but still professional, efficient, and polite. Service was quick, attentive, and friendly on all accounts, and they as a team, managed to serve an entire full house of hungry & happy patrons during the entire Saturday night dinner rush. Fun place with a good staff. We opted for Izakaya-type, shared small plates to satisfy our hunger cravings without getting too full and weighed down on big portions of heavy, rich foods. Everything on the long & expansive menu looked great, but we mostly stuck with small appetizers to sample & savor. It was nice that there were plenty of lighter, fresh vegetarian options as neither of us were really in the mood for seafood, fried food, or big heavy entrees. We ordered the Kinda Tofu, Kyuri sliced fresh cucumber salad, and Kinoko butter-grilled mushroom hot platter and washed it down with some green grape Jinro soju. Everything was pretty good! Not overly fried, greasy, salty, or seasoned. Lightly cooked, delicately glazed, with just enough seasoning & oil/sauce to make it taste good, but not end up too complicated or messy. The taste really came through using these minimal cooking & seasoning techniques. The taste of the original vegetables & tofu came through perfectly, and were only complimented by their light hints of adding flavor. Portion sizes were ample for two people, and presentation was appetizing and organized. The bill for 3 apps + 1 bottle of Soju was less than $50, so it was a good value for the fun experience & good food. Wait times during the dinner rush are long, and there isn't really anywhere to sit or stand, so reservations are recommended. You can also enter and go straight to the 10-seat bar if there are openings, but we got a table for two after around a 20-30 minute wait. After that, everything moves pretty quickly, from ordering, getting food & drinks, to wrapping up and getting your check. Perfect system if you're trying to get to a concert, movie, or appointment with a specific start time. I really liked this place, not Kinda, not Sorta, but Definitely, or Absolutely! Kinda Izakaya will always be our destination to eat & hang out next time we come back to Berkeley, it is a true gem of a Japanese Izakaya/light meal fare right in the heart of downtown Berkeley. It's fun, tasty, busy, and friendly. Small & cozy, yet also airy & comfortable.

Thoroughly confused - she didn't even call my name to confirm so I had to go up to her and ask. No apology either. Was seated at the counter where solo diners usually sit. Service was non existent. Server came up to me and ask "what would you like to order?" I've never been there before. No "hi my name is ... I'll be your server" nada. They're just a machine - people in people out. The ramen - broth was fine. The squiggly noodles aren't my favorite. Expected to have kernel corn but had corn ribs instead (good thing I'm good with chopsticks!) The charshu was just okay. Enoki topping was just ... aight. The nice touch was that they didn't put it in the ramen and served it on the side to preserve its crunchiness because it definitely needed the texture! It was loud, busy, and nothing spectacular about the dining scene here. $55 dollars later (ramen, 2 additional toppings, one box of sake) ... I sadly don't think it was worth it.

The waygu ramen melted in my mouth and had be day dreaming about it for days after. I was hesitant it get it but thank God my boyfriend ordered it so I just ate his. JUST ORDER IT! You will not regret it. The tables are kind of wobbly so that was the only annoying thing about dinner. However the food and vibes, I cannot complain about.

I don't know how this place has so many raving reviews. It doesn't deserve the stars it has…read more First, we came in around opening which was at 4:30. We stood in the front with multiple workers seeing us, but wasn't acknowledged for a full five minutes (it's completely empty). We're seated and figured they would allow us to start happy hour because it was from 5-6pm (which, what a short HH!) and we ordered around 4:50pm. Nope. Waitress took out her phone and denied it. Okay.... Waited an extra ten AND THEN ordered food. Got the nigiri sampler and added the uni and toro. That was a mistake, because for a whole $20 addtl., the sampler was so lackluster. The tamago was oddly colored and the rice was... chewy? We left the crab one because... unsure what kind of frozen crab that was. Meanwhile, this whole time we're waiting for our HH drinks while other people are receiving theres. Mind you, we ordered first. Also, I ordered a Sapporo which was a CAN. Had to bother multiple staff to get my can. Also... $5 HH special from regular $7 price? Idk... We also ordered the HH karaage and gyoza which came with a curry sauce that wasn't too bad, and some agadashi tofu that I actually liked. Ordered the chicken skins or Tori Kawa, and those were mediocre. Tried to order more HH items but the wait staff almost completely ignored us. Soon enough, HH is over! Worst happy hour experience ever. Never coming back to this place and recommend others to find another spot for sushi since there's waaayyyyy better spots in the city than this.
