Came to try out this place with a couple friends! One of my friends has been here a few times and recommends it! We got gyoza and three of the specialty rolls to share! All were very delicious and I love that everything here is vegetarian/vegan. The service was very good as well and I loved the ambiance! The servers came to check up on us often. The restaurant itself does have limited seating, but they also take reservations through Yelp! Overall, definitely a fun and fresh dining experience, and I'd come again to try new dishes!!

Very good vegan sushi! The rolls were super tasty and similar to normal speciality sushi rolls. The proud peacock was similar to a rainbow roll and the variety of toppings were all very refreshing. Boddy and soul resembled a fire cracker roll - this was a group fave. The mushroom platter was also pretty good. I thought the agedashi tofu could use a lighter batter. the nigiris were probably the only items i feel were furthest from actual sushi but were still tasty in their own way.

Shizen sushi bar located at San Francisco. They are famous for their vegan food. They have amazing menu with varieties of sushi options available. If you are vegetarian and want to try sushi, i would highly recommend this place to you. They have pretty good ambiance with fast service.

Absolutely love Shinzen food is always delicious & fresh, came for my bday celebration & was treated to a lovely dessert, thank you Boddy & soul my absolute favorite all other rolls spot on.

Made a res but wasn't busy when we arrived. We got seated right away and service was great. We tried some drinks, nigiri, several rolls, and dessert. It's cute inside and sorta unsuspecting from the outside. Nigiri was prob our favorite. The rolls were great and creative. We loved the veggie ones more than any that had tofu. Maybe the texture with the rolls threw us off a bit or something. Drinks were refreshing and dessert was so so. The mochi with red bean wasn't too sweet and had great texture. We didn't love the ice cream texture but flavor was good. It was nice to check out Shizen and a great vegan restaurant.

I've been wanting to try Shizen for a while and was finally able to snag a reservation for a Saturday night, and I'm so glad I did! We arrived and were sat promptly at the reservation time. It's a small spot so you for sure need to secure a reservation to avoid a long wait. I ordered the Karaage, Boddy & Soul and Secret Weapon rolls shared between two people. I also ordered the mango soda which sounded good but was just ok. The Karaage was so good, I just wish it came with more. The boddy & soul was my favorite roll, as it was crispy and flavorful. I would definitely come back to try more rolls!

The perfect evening! Reservations through the Yelp app for dinner at 6:15 pm. Free Sunday parking right across the street. Christy the amazing Manager and hostess welcoming us so warmly and seating us 18 minutes before our reservation time. Wonderful, attentive and prompt service from our server Alan( extra ginger - twice, the birthday dessert surprise, great suggestions). Beautiful food - lovely mushrooms, best Miso soup ever, surprise ending with the shot of sake in the middle, Brussels sprouts , a smooth Shizen lemonade and wonderful hot tea. The freshly prepared red bean donuts were to die for. Best seats in the house. Shizen the upscale, recent Michelin star recipient was a unique, fun, delicious and memorable experience.

The food here never misses, however service was lacking at my last visit. We made a reservation and watched ~15 people get seated before us so we weren't seated until 30 minutes after our reservation. The restaurant was busy as always, but once seated we didn't get any menus and couldn't get anyone's attention, and eventually we walked over and grabbed the menus ourselves. Not to mention, it still took a bit after getting someone's attention for them to come over and take our order. I love the food at shizen but our recent experience was disappointing :/ (Boddy and Soul is my favorite roll)

A very sought after vegetarian restaurant in SF where you shouldn't go without a booking. Reach on time with a booking else you would have to stand outside in line. Food does live up to the hype. My suggestion is to try new food that you may not commonly see/ have. It is on the pricier side (with alcohol added), so definitely a place for a special event. Spicy Miso Ramen and vegetable tempura were pretty usual, but the veg ceviche, secret weapon special rolls, and the cocktails were new, refreshing, interesting. Service is good, and staff is friendly. Tables are very close together so it's hard to find a place to keep your stuff - esp jackets and backpacks.

Vegan sushi is so incredibly fun to try as they are inventive and using ingredients in ways that make the texture and taste stand out. We enjoyed it! Service was great! Unfortunately it was difficult to remember what we got.

Used to my yearly anniversary spot but sadly the food and service both are compromised. As usual we ordered everything from specials/last page Service is so slow and pathetic. I feel the changes after the star. This place needs to manage reservations or find better way.

Was really surprised by how good the vegan apps and sushi were here! As someone who loves raw fish, I was skeptical of the idea of vegan sushi but came here with a vegetarian friend wanting to try the specialty rolls. We started with the Bean Curd Katsu and then shared the Open Invitation and Colonel's Pipe rolls which was the perfect amount of food for 2 people. Loved the Bean Curd Katsu which had a great texture and really crispy, crunchy crust! The rolls were delicious and full of flavor. The shredded tofu in the Open Invitation roll reminded me of the imitation crab in a California roll and the lotus chips added a great crunch. Colonel's Pipe was great as well - loved the creamy tofu and smoked beet combo! Overall such a yummy spot that everyone would enjoy regardless of if you're vegan or not! And the space is gorgeous as well with natural wood all around. The perfect spot to take visitors from out of town or a date night to try something new!

    Do they have high chairs?

Yes they have high chair seating.

Do they have tables for greater than 4 people? Thinking about going with 6 people total.

Yes, they usually make 6 people table by joining 3 tables.

If I want to eat alone (party of 1) on a Friday night, should I expect a reasonable wait for bar seating or am I better off making a reservation for a table for 1?

I"d much rather sit to a table . For one thing to get a better Service. Actually The host's job is to seat hungry people and to set diners' expectations for how long they'll have to wait for their meal. When a restaurant takes reservations, hosts… Read more

Any of the items in their sushi menu served with cooked vegetables?

Yes - quite a few use cooked vegetables. I would say more are cooked than raw.

Do you guys offer Jain or no-onion no-garlic food?

Am sure they can, I avoid those and never have a problem, they will work with you.

Are there gluten and soy free options? Unfortunately I have issues with both. Please let me know which may be okay as I'd LOVE to come for a meal. Thanks!

There are a LOT of gf options, clearly marked on the menus. I was not looking for soy free, so I didn't notice. Email them. They were super helpful to me via email!

Would they take photos of IDs and Covid Vaccine Cards instead of physical copies for Dine-in?

    Yes

Is there a parklet or other outdoor seating?

there was one outdoor table when I went there, but it was on a sidewalk

Do they still do the online waitlist?

No, they are reservation only and offer limited seating times

Do they accept digital covid vaccine records?

    Yes. With your license.

    Are most menu items nut-free?

Yes! I have a severe peanut and tree nut allergy and their menu had little-to no nuts.

Delivery or work with a delivery app service?

No, they offer pick up or dine in only!

Do they only have white rice? Some places have black rice, brown rice, or quinoa options. My friend's blood sugar spikes from white rice.

    I only saw white.

What are the best rolls here going to order for first time?

Hidden Agenda, Boddy and Soul, Secret Weapon (spicy), Proud Peacock. But if any of them are calling your name they are all delicious!

Is the menu completely vegan? I see they hav aoli options and I just want to make sure it does not contain actual mayonnaise.

Yes, the menu is 100% vegan...down to the vegan aoli

Is Shizen open for takeout during shelter-in-place? I could really go for some now...

    Unfortunately no.

Is Shizen doing takeout right now or anyone know if there will be eventually?

Sorry, we live in Seattle and have no idea.

Has anyone actually ever reserved a table online? I see stated on the Shizen website that "We offer very limited online reservations and hold the majority of tables for walk ins", but I cannot find even 1 table for 1 person for 2 months in advance.

Yes, you can reserve a table ... so far I was able to make reservation only at 5pm

    Do they have gluten free?

yes, they have many gluten free items and can alter other items to make them gluten free as well.

Would it be a good idea if I get there early and wait in line (like 4pm)? Or should I just do the waitlist starting at 5:30? Thanks!

Go at around 4 and you'll definitely get a seat when they open. I waited at 5:30 before and was seated at 8

My friend and I happened to walk in right at 5 p.m., landing perfectly at Happy Hour (truly, divine timing). But honestly, it's probably the best time to come. We were seated quickly, and so begins our alcoholic adventure. I can't speak much to the fish, but everything we ordered was a hit. First: get the lychee beer. I'm not even big on alcohol, but I somehow ended up three or four rounds in... heh. Anyways, the yakitori (we got pork belly and chicken thigh) were juicy and packed with flavor, and the karaage was crispy, tender, and perfect with the sauce. We actually ordered multiple rounds of everything and left feeling very full and very festive. Overall, Public Izakaya is a gem tucked behind an unassuming storefront. We decided to get the beef tongue, the wagu beef, the pork and the shiitake mushroom. All of the skewers were absolutely delicious and buttery but definitely are on the pricy side. My bf and I paid roughy $55 per person for the skewers and still left feeling a bit hungry afterwards so definitely keep that in mind if you are coming are expecting large portions that this is more of tapas style small platters. That being said it is definitely worth checking out and the quality is great!

I'm sad to leave a bad review, especially since I've been excited to try this place but honestly…read morewas disappointed by this experience. The food is decent but pretty overpriced. The portion sizes are small too so you won't be full unless you order a ton Warning: they will automatically charge you a "Dine In Service Charge" of 18%. On the receipt, it still asks you for a tip as if there wasn't a service charge already. To me that feels a bit shady/dishonest when it should call out "Additional Tip". Wish I knew and had more transparency before tipping extra on top of it If you do go, I liked their Yuzu Soda, Chicken Oyster, Hiyashi Wakame best. I didnt like their Trumpet mushroom - was a bit too soggy/wet (get the Shiitake instead).

Arrived on valentines weekend without a reservation. Initially thought the door was locked with a…read morefull house of customers inside and almost walked away but looks like you need to shove the door open. Ambiance was so cute very intimate but not much conversational privacy. Ordered the chicken, wagyu steak, beef tongue, okra, eel, scallop, and pork belly skewers. Also had the yuzu cheesecake. All skewers were juicy and delicious 10/10 every item was a hit. Wagyu was soft and not too welldone, scallop was flavorful and soft, chicken was so juicy, tender, and had strong flavor. Yuzu cheesecake - small light fluffy with a light caramel like sauce - emptied the plate 10/10 Would definitely come again.

Okay back to the restaurant itself. Two words : hella cozy. We were jammed in this tiny corner next to another table of three. So much so, that we may should've just considered combining our space. And that would've been totally fine. Why? Because the food is super worth it, and the vibe is friendly and welcoming. Moku is totally cool and whatever the kitchen is grilling will have your mouth watering. Grilled chicken thighs - yup. order two. pork belly - that glaze. yum. bacon wrapped mushrooms - of course it's gonna be good. it's bacon wrapped for goodness sake. croquette - deep fried mash potatoes? yes, please. chicken karaage - much like the croquette but chicken instead. I regret not ordering the chicken meatballs. Although, it does give me another reason to return. Great spot. Good fun. You will mostly likely devour whatever you order at lightening speed. And don't sleep on their beer and sake selection. Lastly, tip your servers well. They're ninja-like service will make it seem like the food and drink are magically appearing while the empty plates and glasses are simultaneously disappearing.
