Great lunch menu. The Nigiri's are fresh and tasty. The Tofu Agedashi was crunchy outside and soft inside. The Hokkaido Uni was really delicious. The service from Shaun was amazing and friendly. The Chef was really nice and attentive. The place is big and spacious. and the place is accessible with the public transport. Please visit them for delicious food and great service.

Came here on a Thursday night. Got the enoki wrapped in beef and the sushi omakase. Everything was very tasty and reasonably priced. Service was quick and attentive. Would definitely go again when in the neighborhood.

The dragon roll was great. The salmon tasted fatty and smooth. The chicken karaage was also perfectly crispy and had good flavor. The butter edamame was very flavorful and good. The tofu had a good crisp and in a sauce that was pretty good. The restaurant is not huge but there is plenty of seating. The service was also very friendly and attentive. The parking is difficult and there is only street parking. The price was also reasonable.

We were walking the neighborhood and we found this cute little place as soon as you come in guided to a table you sit down and it's the typical fair cold on warm server. Kind of rushing you to place your order even though you sat down. When the food came out, it was pretty good. I was happy with the food a bento box in a roll. The miso soup was OK. The hot tea was just tea. It's just basic nothing really impressive here. Well, I'll be back probably not. I tried it once I didn't feel welcome so I won't be back. Is the food OK yes food is fine. I just didn't feel welcome.

We randomly came to Shokudou on a Friday night since we were craving sushi. The ambiance is pretty simple; we were one of the only tables that late in the evening but still had a good experience. In terms of the food, I would say that their sushi is much better than their appetizers. We ordered the Cucumber Salad, Cortland Roll, Kani Rainbow Roll, Chirashi, and Chicken Karaage. I would actively avoid the cucumber salad; the sauce was strange and the cucumbers felt very limp. The chicken karaage was also just okay--it felt kind of fatty and oily. The sushi was yummy! I really enjoyed both of the rolls that we ordered. The fish in the chirashi was also great. The service was standard, and the prices seemed very reasonable. In general, I think it's a solid sushi spot if you're in the area!

4.6 stars is crazy. Don't think locals have been to the sone of the best spots in the city. Definitely chose this place for the stars but ya you'll get burnt from time to time -fooood- Chicken karage: yeah can't really go wrong with that. 4/5 Hamachi Kama: not much flavor, was really just fried fish. 2/5 Chicken skin skewer: this is the first izakaya ive been to where this dish was bad. Wasn't too crispy and wayyyyyyy too salty. .5/5 Chicken gizzard: good , cooked well but a little lacking in flavor. 3/5 Beef enoki: their most popular dish was a let down. There's a certain ratio you need to achieve with this or it just doesn't capitalize ingenuity of this simple dish. beef was also a little over cooked. 1.5/5 Toro gunkan: sounded better on paper. Just not the same without the saltiness from caviar. 2.5/5 A5 wagyu: just a couple of seconds to sear but no, overcooked. 1/5 Forgot that last one but wasn't great either way. Sushi is usually astounding for me so this was a big let down. Overall staff was nice, organized inside and nice restaurant with plenty of street parking, just the food was not there at all. Reading other reviews, does seem like a lack of flavor so heed my warning!

Walked into Shokudou without a reservation on Saturday night and it was no issue. The ambiance was upscale but with a rustic vibe. I quite liked the sliding barn door for entry - it reminded me of restaurants in Japan. Looking over the menu, it covers the gamut of popular Japanese fare from small bites to nigiri and sushi to donburi. Surely, you'll find something to suit your wants! My friend and I shared several small plates and a roll and it was just right for the two of us! My favorites included the beef rolled enoki, the agedashi tofu, and the Flame Otoro roll. The beef rolled enoki was composed of two skewers, each with three servings of marinated beef wrapped around a cluster of enoki mushrooms. It was super flavorful and juicy! Also a very generous portion for an izakaya skewer. The agedashi tofu featured the perfect juxtaposition between a crisp battered exterior and a soft silky interior. The bonito flakes added a nice salty touch which balanced the sweet tsuyu sauce. The roll featured generous cubes of otoro with even more tuna laid on top. The tuna on top is seared and then topped with some peppers and puffed rice. It was a fun mix of buttery, spicy, and crispy. Shokudo's ginger, specifically, was deliciously sweet and tangy. Dishes bringing up the back included the nigiri and the pork belly. For the nigiri, I felt like the rice was underseasoned across the board. The cuts of fish were generous though. I liked the Itoyori best which was a new fish for me to try. It was delicate but sweet. The king salmon was buttery as expected and the Hobo fish (another new bite for me) was a little too meaty for my liking. The pork belly skewer was flavorful but I expect my pork belly to be a little more unctuous and require a little less work to bite through. Dinner for 2 came to just about $80 before tip. I could see myself returning if I'm in the Bernal area!

The atmosphere inside, as the evening closes it's wonderful since the giant window gets a nice bit of sunlight, it's calm inside which is offset by three One Piece wall prints. One of them decided to splice one piece into "onep" "iece" which I found very avant garde. The takoyaki was great, hard to get it wrong but obvious when so Edamame was plentiful and garlicky, exactly what I expected from garlic butter edamame Our rolls were excellent, you can taste the quality is definitely above average Service was attentive, I enjoyed eating here and would be back if in the area, prices are a little up there but understandable

No wait on a Sunday evening. Hamachi Kama was large and really well cooked , I highly recommend this place for a hidden casual vibe. Edit: came back again on Valentine's Day. Very busy but luckily they had a spot open up for us. DELICIOUS!! Note to self: get the grilled miso eggplant again, that ish fireeeee

Cute neighborhood spot, but nothing truly stood out. Pros: + Service is friendly + Spacious seating + Parking was no trouble on a Tuesday evening What We Ordered: - 8 piece omakase; 3/5 + Tori Karaage; 5/5 + Buta Bara; 4/5 We all ordered a set of the 8 piece omakase. The two boys are not foodies so as long as they're fed, we're good. For me, however, the selection of fish was impressive, but taste was not there. Not awful, just didn't stand out. Lacking in flair. We also thought there would be a larger variety of skewers. It was heavily chicken and bacon wrapped skewers. Luckily, we found the pork belly skewer (BUTA BARA), which is under the HOT section of the menu, not under the skewers section. That along with the chicken karaage (TORI KARAAGE) was delicious. Good place if you're in the neighborhood. Otherwise, not worth trekking to. I'm glad I tried a new spot, but will not be returning.

Summary: Tasty izakaya with great value Details: I've been meaning to go to Shokudou for a couple years now, but wasn't really about the indoor dining scene during the midst (or even tail end) of COVID. Now that I've loosened up a bit about this, it was finally time to stop on by! I was pretty surprised to grab a table as easily as we did during prime dinner time, and wasn't sure if it was due to the crowds having died down over time, or just the location being a little tougher to get to, but not having a wait is always a huge plus. That said, a lesson I've learned the hard way is that reservations anywhere are always recommended if you can get one! Like Taniku, the thing you want to stick to here are their more standard izakaya fare: appetizers, skewers, grilled things, etc, which are all quite tasty, though every single grilled item we get was burnt to varying degrees, some more so than others. Fortunately, most didn't actually taste as burnt as they looked, but the bitterness was noticeable in some dishes. Sushi, on the other hand, I'd suggest skipping: it's fresh, so certainly not bad, and like the other eats, you're getting good value, but most of the pieces we got in our omakase weren't particularly noteworthy. Accessibility: While the neighborhood is less accessible with all the steep hills, Shokudou itself is at least on a fairly flat street, with plenty of space and accessible tables inside.

My friend and I happened to walk in right at 5 p.m., landing perfectly at Happy Hour (truly, divine timing). But honestly, it's probably the best time to come. We were seated quickly, and so begins our alcoholic adventure. I can't speak much to the fish, but everything we ordered was a hit. First: get the lychee beer. I'm not even big on alcohol, but I somehow ended up three or four rounds in... heh. Anyways, the yakitori (we got pork belly and chicken thigh) were juicy and packed with flavor, and the karaage was crispy, tender, and perfect with the sauce. We actually ordered multiple rounds of everything and left feeling very full and very festive. Overall, Public Izakaya is a gem tucked behind an unassuming storefront. The ambiance, the food, and yes, the beer, makes it an easy go-to whenever I'm back in the city. Consider me a convert!

Came into town last night to catch a show at the Masonic Auditorium & we were looking for a bite to…read moreeat & some drinks before the show. Since there isn't much to do around the immediate top of Nob Hill, we came back down to explore the neighborhood around Union Square & found Public Izakaya as our dinner spot. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you enter the doors, you enter a world that is classically Tokyo/Shinjuku. Decor is everywhere, on the walls, the ceiling, with toys, figurines, art, plants, anime, lanterns, books, and other sort of interesting, authentically Japanese trinkets. The interior space is very appealing and everywhere you look, you'll see something that catches your eye & imagination. They put a lot of work into decorating this space! It's big & small at the same time. Tables are a plenty, but space is tight. It's really hard to get around in here, you'll have to squeeze between people, tables, chairs, and just walking to the bathroom or your table, you'll have to zig-zag and squeeze past many obstacles. But, it's worth it, and classically Japanese Izakaya, and judging from the packed restaurant on a Friday night, everyone came here to socialize, eat, drink, and hangout & have fun. Music was also very pop-py Japanese, so it really set the right mood for an energetic & fun experience. The service was great. Lots of wait staff roaming around the restaurant ready to take orders & answer questions. Prices are fairly affordable, and offers you a chance to try many small dishes, or splurge on larger entrees. Since we were going to a concert that would go well into the night, we wanted to keep or food intake light, and alcohol intake heavy! The cocktails are good, diverse, creative, authentic, and tasty, but rather small for $15. There is no bartender, the drinks come out to you from the kitchen, but service was fast & efficient. We tried a Lemon Sour, Lychee Mojito, and Ume Shiso. Each were well crafted & presented, but pretty tiny and with very little alcohol, but lots of flavor. We ordered the Mushroom Hot plate, Agadashi Tofu, and salt & pepper broccoli. Food was tasty, portions small, and everything was pretty salty & oily. It's an Izakaya, so I did expect small plates to share in between sips of drinks, but I think the food kind of missed the mark. I ended up feeling a little sick from the salt & oil in the food, but the alcohol kept me going. I think we will come back to try some fresher seafood & Sushi next time, and skip the heavy fried appetizers. Might also stick to wine, beer, or sake, as the cocktails were pretty pricey & small & weak in alcohol. But, it's a really fun, upbeat spot. Lots of eye candy to look at as you are hanging out, eating, drinking, and having fun. The decor & atmosphere is so fun, creative, detailed, and pop-culture Japanese. I really felt like I was transported to an Izakaya in Tokyo for the hour that we were there. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, and I'd like to go back to explore the menu as well as artwork & displays around the restaurant. We had 3 drinks and 3 appetizers, and our bill was around $100. We left satisfied with our Japanese Izakaya experience here, only disappointed by the size & weakness of the alcoholic cocktails, the saltiness & greasiness of the fried foods, and I even felt a little bit fat trying to squeeze into the aisles & tables of the restaurant as a 6' 150" thin asian man, lol. Oh well, I guess Tokyo is dense and Japanese spaces are supposed to be small, tight, and narrow. That mostly added to the authentic Japanese Izakaya experience. PS, it's pretty loud & crowded & busy here, so don't expect to have a calm, quiet, and peaceful conversation here, you'll have to shout above the music, chatter, and noise of the urban jungle here, which actually adds to the classic Izakaya experience. It was a lot of fun, but not a lot alcohol. 3 cocktails and I didn't even catch a buzz!

I normally don't like chicken because of how dry it is, but this was a great skewer. I wish the skin was a little less burnt. The chicken was also so thick that while the outside was juicy, the inside was a little drier. + King Trumpet [4/5]: Wow! These looked amazing when they arrived. Wish it had a bit more torching and cheese, but still delicious - Rainbow Roll -- smaller-sized roll topped with salmon, tuna, shrimp, and avocado - Dragon Roll -- classic unagi and avocado combo; can't go wrong here - Double Salmon Roll -- salmon both inside and on top with a light lemon garnish - Heaven Roll -- tuna-heavy roll inside and out; great for tuna lovers - Bay Bridge Roll -- another standout; tuna and avocado topped with roe and white sauce - Miso Soup -- simple and comforting - Salmon Avocado Roll -- classic fresh combo with cucumber added for crunch - Nigiri (seared salmon, unagi, baby scallop, salmon avocado) -- probably the best quality items overall; loved the fatty scallop and seared salmon - Mixed Greens Salad -- underrated side with a sesame-ranch style dressing - Yammy Yammy Roll -- spicy tuna and seared tuna topped with spicy mayo and unagi sauce - Hamachi Kama -- thinner cut than expected but still buttery and tender There was no wait on a Friday night and our party was seated immediately. The restaurant has tables in both the front dining area and a quieter back section that feels more private. You order through a tablet attached to the table, which also tracks your remaining AYCE time. Service was extremely efficient and dishes came out surprisingly fast. Some items stood out more than others, but overall we definitely got our money's worth. For around $50 including tax and tip, it's a pretty reasonable AYCE sushi option in SF.

We ordered a variety of things such as appetizers, nigiris, and rolls. The takoyaki and tempura were piping hot and tasty. All of the nigiris were pretty good, such as yellowtail, salmon, and unagi. My fave was the salmon with lemon. We got multiple rolls like lion king, geisha, and many more which all of them were delicious. The size of their rolls and nigiris were perfect for all you can eat. The hot sake was smooth and paired well with the fish. Service was great and fast. The food came out pretty quick and the time when you are able to re-order was very reasonable. Overall, I'd definitely come back.

Okonomoyaki tater tots - 8.5/10 from a potato lover!! This does have some sort of cheese on it so beware if you don't eat it Hamachi Hand Roll - 9/10 SO GOOD. I think the rice is mixed in with soy sauce. It was super flavorful which I wasn't expecting Scallop Hand Roll - 8/10, the yuzu on top was absolutely delicious & scallop was very soft. Kobe Skewer - 7/10, it was good but nothing extraordinary. It'll hit the spot if you like meat skewers Yuzu Tori Skewer - 7/10, same as the kobe skewer, but the yuzu on top was delicious Niku Ramen - 8/10, good portion & very very flavorful. I'm glad that they gave a lot of meat in this. I shared this & they provided an extra bowl without me asking :) It's also not super spicy. Hokkaido Milk Pudding - 8/10, the pudding itself was so good but the sauce was a little too sweet for me. However, my partner has a sweet tooth and loved it :) Will totally come again, everything was so yummy and so glad to have tried it!

When we arrived, there was already a long line out front, which set the tone. The place is small and intimate. The food was out of this world. I got the pork belly skewers, mushrooms in truffle sauce, a unagi hand roll, and a shrimp tempura hand roll. All of it was excellent, but the mushrooms and pork belly truly stood out. Every dish felt like it was made with deep care and intention. Our server was attentive throughout. We had a fantastic time. Definitely make a reservation before you go!

The izakaya is on the smaller side inside but is very cozy and dimly lit with tons of dark wood tones. The servers are very friendly and nice and were also able to accommodate my sesame allergy and let me know which skewers and sauces to avoid. We decided to get the beef tongue, the wagu beef, the pork and the shiitake mushroom. All of the skewers were absolutely delicious and buttery but definitely are on the pricy side. My bf and I paid roughy $55 per person for the skewers and still left feeling a bit hungry afterwards so definitely keep that in mind if you are coming are expecting large portions that this is more of tapas style small platters. That being said it is definitely worth checking out and the quality is great!

The portion sizes are small too so you won't be full unless you order a ton Warning: they will automatically charge you a "Dine In Service Charge" of 18%. On the receipt, it still asks you for a tip as if there wasn't a service charge already. To me that feels a bit shady/dishonest when it should call out "Additional Tip". Wish I knew and had more transparency before tipping extra on top of it If you do go, I liked their Yuzu Soda, Chicken Oyster, Hiyashi Wakame best. I didnt like their Trumpet mushroom - was a bit too soggy/wet (get the Shiitake instead).

All skewers were juicy and delicious 10/10 every item was a hit. Wagyu was soft and not too welldone, scallop was flavorful and soft, chicken was so juicy, tender, and had strong flavor. Okay back to the restaurant itself. Two words : hella cozy. We were jammed in this tiny corner next to another table of three. So much so, that we may should've just considered combining our space. And that would've been totally fine. Why? Because the food is super worth it, and the vibe is friendly and welcoming. Moku is totally cool and whatever the kitchen is grilling will have your mouth watering. Grilled chicken thighs - yup. order two. pork belly - that glaze. yum. bacon wrapped mushrooms - of course it's gonna be good. it's bacon wrapped for goodness sake. croquette - deep fried mash potatoes? yes, please. chicken karaage - much like the croquette but chicken instead. I regret not ordering the chicken meatballs. Although, it does give me another reason to return. Great spot. Good fun. You will mostly likely devour whatever you order at lightening speed. And don't sleep on their beer and sake selection. Lastly, tip your servers well. They're ninja-like service will make it seem like the food and drink are magically appearing while the empty plates and glasses are simultaneously disappearing.
