    Salmon

Came again since they had an all-day happy hour this Wednesday! Great advertising on Instagram! Love coming here since the food is fresh and the restaurant ambiance is cute and well decorated. On a Wednesday at 6:30, there was a short 5-minute wait outside and the restaurant was full. We ordered the following from the HH menu: - Goma Asparagus (3/5) - dish was tiny and the asparagus just tasted steamed with sauce on top - crispy salmon bites (4/5) - good portion and kinda tasted like the salmon skin chips from the store - corn ribs (6/5?) these are delicious and must get - brussel yakitori (4/5) good Brussels and way better than the balsamic Brussels that are too saucy - oysters (5/5) fresh and well seasoned with fresh wasabi - choo choo toro (5/5) - hamachi tataki (5/5) - sashimi sampler (5/5) Winners are the fresh fish, whcih comes with fresh wasabi! Yum!

We were in the mood for an izakaya and Chome seemed like the perfect spot to try near us. We loved the ambiance and atmosphere, but unfortunately the food was just okay.. especially for the steeper prices. The complimentary potato salad was honestly my favorite dish. Everything had great presentation and looked great aesthetically. They were just somewhat lacking flavor I was hoping for.

Rating is closer to 3.8, but I debated giving it a 4 stars because of a few reasons: food enjoyment and price affordability. First, I experienced impeccable service. Shoutout to the lady who worked all of front-of-house, she is a boss. She was our hostess, server, ran food, and bused tables. All the while, checking in on us often and letting us know when things were on the way so we didn't feel forgotten. Food is all small plate shareables. Our one entree was the pork cheek fried rice. Maybe it was just what we ordered but I felt like everything was really oily/greasy. The freshest items were the negitoro roll and the potato salad they gave to us at the start for free. Yes, it's an izakaya, but we found ourselves struggling to continue eating the plates since it felt so heavy. Sure, maybe we didn't order the right stuff, but lots of the menu items are deep fried, stir-fried, or grilled also. We enjoyed the cumin lamb skewers and the negitoro the best! We were disappointed in the truffle poppers as each bite was more filled with fried breading than mushrooms. The dessert was beautiful and we did enjoy that. We ended up paying like 100pp including tax and tip. There are many Japanese izakayas I can pay less for in San Francisco including a la carte at Rintaro! But anyways, shoutout to the hostess lady, she's a boss.

We arrived as a family of 5. The wait was about 35-40 minutes. Unfortunately, they were understaffed yesterday which may have made the wait longer. Food arrived fairly quick though. The meal came with potato salad that was very flavorful. The place had beautiful artwork all around. It's almost like going to an izakya in Japan. The menu can get a bit overwhelming because it's a lot of black print writing for about 5 pages. That night, they were out of most of the cheaper menu items which makes a big difference when you look at the prices in the menu. Fairly pricey for 2 pieces on a skewer. The food overall was very good. The best dish was probably the chutoro sashimi (5 piece). The duck duck carbonara was another one of our favorites. The sushi nuggets and crispy salmon bites were also great. The hojicha panna cotta was delicious and we highly recommend this.

    Chu toro with crispy rice

I've had Chome on my list for a while and was happy to finally visit! Overall, I thought this was very good. However, unfortunately I was really craving sushi and I found the sushi options limited compared to what I had expected (or wanted, rather, but that's on me for missing the emphasis on ramen and other izakaya options). My boyfriend and I ordered the chu toro on crispy rice, combo 7 skewers, wagyu & crab roll, oysters, and toasted rice tea. I loved the toasted rice tea! It was pretty neutral and settling. I also loved the oysters; they were large and the sauce was very complimentary. The wagyu and crab rolls were delicious, but I felt the crab and fish egg flavors overwhelmed the wagyu. I thought the skewers were pretty standard (good but did not blow me away), and the toro was melt-in-your-mouth but in my opinion, didn't need the crispy rice. I enjoyed the small, intimate setting and the character of the decor, and the service was friendly and well-paced. I'd definitely come back, but I think I'd target some other food options!

Don't come here if you're expecting a menu with standard Japanese izakaya. Chome offers a unique menu with dishes you probably can't find elsewhere. I mostly liked what I got but would pass on the chicken Karage. Stop by to explore innovative Japanese cuisine! Something to keep in mind is that the seating is very intimate and you may be basically sharing a table with other parties in some areas.

I guess I wrote a review for this place before, so time for an update. They must have moved locations, because this building was much bigger and not like the narrow alleyway vibe I got from the last time I tried this place. Tables were still cramped and quite small for our group of three. We had to keep shuffling our cups and dishware around to make room for our dishes. Didn't help that we were seated next to this strange, obnoxious couple. When they were ordering, the woman at the table next to us pointed to our pineapple beers and was like "I don't want fruit in my beer: just regular beer" (the pineapple beers were delicious by the way). She also made a big deal about waving the waiter down. I had to make an effort to tune them out while trying to have a conversation with my friends. In comparison to last time though, the noise was less so of an issue. Food-wise, everything we had was delicious! We had the chutoro sizzler, uni udon carbonara, lucky clucky skewers, and the oxtail omurice. Really enjoyed the umami and fragrant flavors of the uni udon carbonara and trying all the different parts of the chicken from the lucky clucky skewers. The oxtail was very good though and came right off the bone, but the sauce was very tomato-ey (just read my previous review, and looks like I had the same issue then as now). It was good, but I didn't feel the need to finish the whole thing, which is a rarity for me. Apparently, they also have a happy hour (prior to dinner hour and late night), so can see why this place is so busy. Would definitely love to catch their happy hour in the future.

Came here for dinner around 7 PM on a Saturday. I'd recommend making a reservation, as the restaurant fills up quickly, and each table has a 90-minute time limit. We ordered the oxtail omurice and the Combo 7 skewers. The skewers were a good size and flavorful, and the omurice was just as satisfying. The restaurant is small but cozy. Overall, we enjoyed our meal, though it was definitely on the pricier side.

The place is super cute and the vibe is really nice! The music was a bit too loud at first--I could barely hear myself talk but I think they adjusted it later, which helped. The menu is honestly overwhelming... it's like a whole book, and I had no idea what to order. I feel like they could simplify it a bit. We came around 5 PM and tried their "happy time" menu (it's only 45 minutes, and they don't actually call it happy hour). The food was pretty good. The pineapple beer is basically a Sapporo can mixed with pineapple juice, and it was ok not bad. Service was just okay--not bad, not amazing. They also automatically add a 20% tip for parties of 4 or more, which feels a bit high. Overall, it was fine, but I'm not sure if I'd come back

Chome is a hip spot, with an extensive menu. The basic izakaya/yakitori items are all good and well executed. I had the pork cheek and it was delicious and perfectly cooked. The specialty items eqch sound like a very brilliant idea, but vary in their execution (if I could, I'd give this place 4.5 stars to reflect this). For example, the unagi with ikura skewer was impossibly tasty: The sweet salty popping ikura was a nice complement to the fatty and sweet unagi. The duck tempura special was outstanding: the duck was tender and in a crispy tempura batter, served with slightly bitter microgreens (maybe it was arugula) and a sweet plum sauce. The dirty cauliflower is flavorful, crispy, and delicious. Other things sound like a great idea but don't quite live up to it. For me, the signature oxtail omurice was disappointing. The oxtail is prepared in a tomato stew, which is very tomato forward and dilutes the oxtail. As a result, it's a very soupy dish and there's no balance between the rice, omelet, soup, and oxtail (in fact, the oxtail is limited in the flavor profile and I think it should be the star of the show). I would have loved something with a more condensed and richer sauce (almost like a gravy) for the oxtail, so that one could really taste the omelet, rice, and oxtail together.

Good food, good service, cozy vibes. This place is pretty popular. I came with a friend on a Saturday night and we got lucky and got seated pretty quickly. Food came out quickly and they did a pretty good job of keeping our waters filled. Here are my thoughts on the food Corn ribs - very good, grilled to caramelization with cheese Chu toro sizzler - toro pieces were tender but if you don't like them cooked, grab them off the sizzler quickly! Bacon mochi - tasty but what isn't with bacon? Karaage and fries - this is a very flavorful version of karaage as the sauce is spicy and has a hint of curry in it. Salty yolky salmon skin - this was the only dish I was meh about. I thought the salmon skin would be crispier but this was a meaty dish that wasn't very crispy

We wanted to try something new (to us), vegetarian friendly, and in the mission district . Ambiance: Quite loud and the music is... A choice. They were playing random stuff like monster mash and Christmas music, which I felt to be a little inappropriate for dinner. The tables are small and close together. There's a lot of artwork and fun stuff all over the walls - I could probably stare at them all day long, honestly. They were pretty cute. Service: We had 5 to our group, so I texted ahead of time to get a table. They were quick to accommodate. They do charge 20% gratuity if you have a party or 4 or more, so be mindful of that - but they also remind you when you're paying the bill, so you don't get charged extra extra. We came on a Friday night and it wasn't full when we got there, but filled pretty quickly soon after. They did get part of our orders wrong - they gave me a tofu carbonara instead of the duck one, but they changed it to the right one after I mentioned it. They filled our waters up pretty regularly and it was nice because it was infused with citrus (lemon, orange, lime) and was very refreshing with the meal we had. Food: They start off with a potato salad on the house. Vegetarian people beware - they have bonito flakes on top. Duck carbonara - so creamy and flavorful without being overly salty. The duck was tender and not overcooked. The bacon pieces added a nice texture and smoke to the dish. The egg on top was a nice touch, and made the dish extra creamy. The udon had a nice bite to it, springy, but not soggy. My friends ordered the mushroom asparagus garlic noodle, which was excellent. They really enjoyed their meals and I was able to try a small portion of my friend's, but didn't get enough to give a solid review. The asparagus was crunchy, but thoroughly cooked, mushrooms were soft and flavorful, and the noodles were good. My other friend got the garlic chili tonkotsu ramen and he can't really tolerate spice, but enjoyed this very much. I didn't get to try it, so I can't speak to it. I would definitely come back and try more things on the menu, as everything we did try was excellent. **Update** I went back and got a few other things on the menu. Uni carbonara - 3 big pieces of uni with ikura surrounding it. The udon had the same great texture as the duck - perfectly cooked. The flavors were lacking, in my opinion. It was creamy but light. The uni was fresh, but at the price point, I wouldn't personally order it again. Oxtail omurice - the oxtail was tender and fell off the bone easily. There were two giant pieces next to a bed of rice, egg, and a very tomatoey sauce. If you're into tomatoes, this would be an excellent dish for you. Otherwise, again lacking in flavor. The egg was a bit overdone and more like an omelette. This dish tasted more like home style cooking, rather than restaurant style. Still good, but I wouldn't order again. Chu-toro skillet - very flavorful. They put the raw tuna on a bed of puffed rice on a cast iron skillet and when presented, they pour a teriyaki like sauce around the edges, causing the dish to sizzle and sear the tuna. Highly recommend. Lots of people ordered this dish the first time I visited. I can see why. Lucky 6 skewers - 6 different kinds of chicken skewers. We're all a fan of offal, so we ordered and it's very tasty. I believe it's heart, gizzard, skin, thigh, tendon, and I can't remember the last one. All were seasoned well and crispy. Would highly recommend. Pineapple beer - I believe they use pineapple juice to mix with the beer. Very refreshing with the food and worth trying if you like pineapple.

Came here for dinner and arrived right before happy hour ended! I started off with the pineapple beer, which was actually so refreshing and unique. We got a ton of different dishes to share, some highlights: -Brussels sprouts- perfectly cooked and flavorful -Shishito peppers - small qty, but super high quality. One of them was orange, but it tasted the same lol -Chicken thigh skewers - soooo good -Garlic shrimp pasta- delicious The vibes here are great and the service was speedy & pleasant. Definitely a solid izakaya spot!

Both my partner and I were thoroughly impressed by its complexity and comforting warmth, and we have continued to crave it long after the winter season. While it is somehow still not as concentrated as San Mateo (in terms of ramen shops within walking distance), I do appreciate that there is an abundance of them such that you don't have to desperately line up for 1 hour just for a bowl of soup. Hinodeya is a mainstay at this point. It's likely not even exciting to the locals, and nobody makes a special trip for them. There are multiple locations all over the city, and the Japantown one is one of the nicer locations with outside seating that isn't super crammed. They have a lot of different broth options here, but the shop is mainly known for their dashi (light seafood based) broth, and it is actually quite good with a lot of umami and freshness. Whenever I'm hungry but have no patience, I tend to wander into Hinodeya knowing that the ramen would hit the spot. Is it the best ramen? That's up to you, but it is definitely one of the most available in the city, and much better than the average in this nation.
