Sukiyaki Beef Ramen. Good, but noodles a bit too al dente.
    James Y.

Small and cramped. Rushed service kicking your stool anytime anyone walks by, including service members. Faulty bathroom door lock. Neutral to not so friendly service team. Under cooked noodles. Not a great experience. The food was good enough, although the noodles were a bit too much on the al dente side, the ramen was flavorful. DO NOT GET THE CHIPS. While a good concept, it's beyond salty and we had to stop eating it. Hinodeya, the other location was much better. This Union Square location, not so much.

We ordered a Togo order late at night after a busy day. The place so crowded but they had it ready in about 10 minutes! Ramen was so temperature hot still when we went to eat it and it tasted delicious. Portions are huge... I couldn't finish mine. My husband did though! We just got the original ramen and would again but would add a little spiciness to it.

Came for a quick dinner before a block party nearby. It was a weekend day and was seated right away. As usual, most ramen spots bring the food really fast. Hinodeya (5/5); Comes with two pieces of chashu. Very solid and delicious

It's nice to look out from your balcony and see a like forming in front of the restaurant right on the corner. This ramen spot was good! Got the traditional and wifie got the spicy miso. Both were good! Had a line, but wasn't a long wait at all.

Stopped by Hinodeya Ramen and was seated almost immediately, which was a great start. I ordered the Sukiyaki Beef Ramen and the portion size was generous. The noodles were thick with the perfect chewy texture, and the beef broth was rich and flavorful with a solid serving of beef throughout the bowl. One small surprise was the egg -- based on the photos I expected a traditional boiled ramen egg, but it came poached directly in the broth instead. Had I known beforehand, I probably would've swapped it out. I also asked if the ramen could be made extra spicy and was told yes, but when it arrived it really wasn't spicy at all. Thankfully there was powdered spice at the table, which helped bring the heat level up. Service overall was pleasant, and the staff were friendly throughout the visit. The restaurant itself was clean, comfortable, and had plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating. Overall, a solid ramen spot with flavorful broth and well-cooked noodles -- I'd definitely come back

Yuzu Zen ramen ($20) - pretty good but not a fan of the inari

Ive eaten my fair share of Japanese ramen and know my ramen pretty well. Yelp and Google both had Hinodeya higher rated than Ippudo (I wasn't in the mood to battle whatever mob scene might be happening at Mensho), and this place was literally right across the street from my hotel, so I made a mad dash for this place as it was friggin' cold in SF on a late Spring day. If you try to come here around 6-7pm, there is a long line waiting to get seated, but it moves fast. I kept peeking out of my hotel window and by 7:30pm, line was almost non existent, so that's when I went down to get dinner. When I arrived, I was immediately shown a seat inside. You can sit outside too as lots of tables right on the street but it was way too cold for me. Service was quick and I ordered a Yuzu Zen (vegan) ramen. I wanted to try something different than their signature ramen. This ramen was cooked in the traditional Japanese Buddhist temple way, which was a bonus for me. I am a practicing Buddhist and have meditated at various different temple organizations and I enjoy temple cooking as its usually lighter but still very soul nourishing. The broth is lighter and its a vegan dashi broth and comes with zest of yuzu (its like a Japanese lemon), bamboo shoots, crispy kale and sweet fried tofu. I enjoyed this bowl of noodles with soup and the broth was hot, so it warmed me up. I was not really a fan of the inari (sweet fried tofu) as it was just too sweet for me. Service was a little slow towards the end as I was itching to pay and go for an evening stroll, but otherwise, a good experience. I'd come back again when nearby.

The ramen was 10/10. The dumplings were 10/10 and the shrimp tempura was 7/10 only because the batter was very thick as if it had been overfried. The ambiance was great for a Thursday night. The service was also good they just took a while to serve us. Then the wait staff forgot we ordered shrimp tempura. We had to ask for it

Hinodeya is always consistently delicious, no matter which location. Love that their ramen is tasty but also not too heavy. Also appreciate that they have very good vegan options that rival some restaurants' regular ramen. This location near Union Square is very convenient because it's open very late. The drawback is that it can be very crowded, which is why this time we had to sit outside. But it wasn't too bad since there are heat lamps. Service can be a bit slow, especially getting the check, but understandable due to the popularity. Excellent karaage too, somehow very crispy but not oily, heavy, or too thick at all. Last thing, when meeting friends at Hinodeya in the city, be sure to specify and go to exactly the right one!

Spending some time in San Francisco and had dinner here one night. The place is really tiny and popular. However, we got lucky and got seated inside right away. They have seats outside but wouldn't want that as it looks like it was about to rain. And it did rain as we were eating! Everything we ordered is very savory! Some richer than others. We got the Spicy Miso Butter Corn Ramen, Hinodeya Ramen (House Ramen), Sukiyaki Beef Ramen, and Crispy Chicken Karaage. They're all good, but my favorite is the Hinodeya house ramen. I also enjoyed their hot matcha green tea. The waiter got our orders right away and food came out soon after. The waiters are nice and friendly. Such a nice, tasty, comforting hot ramen dinner on a cold night in San Francisco.

Came here for lunch on the 4th of July. Pretty easy to get seating, though the place is tiny. We ordered two different ramen bowls (Hamaguri and the UMAMI tonkatsu) - both were way too salty for our taste and a bit overpriced for the amount of food we got. Not planning to return.

We chose the house ramen and beef suyaki ramen, gyoza and hot sake. The noodles were homemade - you could tell. They were delicious!! Broth was fish based but add a bit of spice and it was good. Gyoza was slightly charred giving it a smoky taste. Overall the food was good but servers are a bit short with customers so beware

Stumbled upon this place as I was walking in the neighborhood and decided to stop by for lunch. I was seated right away and was given water and a menu within the minute. I ordered the spicy edamame and the yu-Lin-chi. The edamame definitely has a kick to them and the chicken was great. Nicely coated.

Last Wednesday April 08,2026 My Friends And I Went Downtown San Francisco To Explore As We Decided To Have A Late Lunch At Hinodeya Ramen By Union Square And We Were So Lucky That When We Walk Inside There Was A Spot for Us. Cause Usually Its Hard To Get A Sit Specially Alot Of Patron's Come To Dine On The Said Restaurant. So when we were Escorted By The Staff To Sit And Gave Us The Menu And Decided To Order The Hinodeya House Ramen, The Gyoza Dumplings And Appetizer was The Endamame Sticks Wraped And Fried. As Always The Food Serving Was So Great And Savory The Staff Are Friendly And Courteus And The Restaurant Ambiance Is Clean And Prestine As It's My First Time to Dine Inside As This Is My Second To visit the said restaurant And I Highly Recommend it. Have Attached Some Photos So Please Check it Out.

This dish stands out as one of the most memorable and flavorful offerings we have experienced. The rich, creamy broth delivers a perfectly balanced umami depth, harmoniously combined with subtle heat and aromatic spices that create an indulgent yet refined dining experience. Both my partner and I were thoroughly impressed by its complexity and comforting warmth, and we have continued to crave it long after the winter season. The Umami Creamy Tan-Tan-Men soup represents a true highlight of your culinary repertoire. We believe it deserves a lasting place on the regular menu, where it can be enjoyed year-round by loyal patrons and new guests alike. Its removal has left a noticeable gap, and we are confident that reinstating it as a signature item would be met with great enthusiasm. Thank you for creating such an outstanding dish. We eagerly await its return and look forward to ordering it on our next visit.

While it is somehow still not as concentrated as San Mateo (in terms of ramen shops within walking distance), I do appreciate that there is an abundance of them such that you don't have to desperately line up for 1 hour just for a bowl of soup. Hinodeya is a mainstay at this point. It's likely not even exciting to the locals, and nobody makes a special trip for them. There are multiple locations all over the city, and the Japantown one is one of the nicer locations with outside seating that isn't super crammed. They have a lot of different broth options here, but the shop is mainly known for their dashi (light seafood based) broth, and it is actually quite good with a lot of umami and freshness. Whenever I'm hungry but have no patience, I tend to wander into Hinodeya knowing that the ramen would hit the spot. Is it the best ramen? That's up to you, but it is definitely one of the most available in the city, and much better than the average in this nation.

One thing to keep in mind is that the ramen doesn't come loaded with toppings. Items like the egg are extra, which can add up considering the restaurant is already on the more expensive side. The Spicy Shrimp Tempura was also good and made a nice addition to the ramen. Parking is probably one of the bigger challenges when coming here. It's San Francisco, so definitely plan ahead. The 5th and Mission parking garage may be a good option if you don't want to spend too much time looking for street parking. Overall, good ramen, great noodles, and a nice atmosphere. It's definitely on the pricier side once you start adding toppings and appetizers, but we enjoyed our meal.
