    Spicy Shoyu Ramen

Amazing find in sunset . Delicious ramen and Unami broth . Star of the dinner was the crispy mushrooms !!! Loved how quickly the food was served .

Finally got to try Ushi Taro and maybe I need to try it again because I wasn't a fan of it My bf and I ordered the spicy shoyu ramen and the spicy ramen (beef broth). I added a bone marrow in my shoyu ramen as my bf said I have to try it once to see if I enjoy it. My spicy shoyu ramen was good but I felt the bone marrow wasn't anything special. It was suppose to elevate the ramen and soup base but it didn't do much to it. I tried my bf spicy ramen broth and it was so salty that we had to ask for a regular bone broth to add to the soup. Although it was slight better, it was way to salty considering my bf like salty foods. Maybe because we went about 1.5 hours before it closed but we both agreed we had better ramen before.

Went to Ushi Taro Ramen last weekend. Was a paradigm changing experience. Would highly recommend getting the black garlic and bone marrow addons. It adds an incredible umami to the dish that I haven't seen replicated anywhere else. Vibes were also great. It's walk in only and a pretty quaint space, so feels really intimate when eating your meal.

I am rarely in SF so I haven't had the chance to explore the food scene here, but my bf took me here once and I am already in love! This might currently be a top contender for my personal favorite ramen. Let me just say that I am rarely in SF because driving and parking just sucks. This place is no different, but I like that it is near Golden Gate Park, so you have plenty of things to do if you are sticking around the area. This is also a plus since the restaurant is quite small, so there may be a wait if you come at the wrong time. Crispy mushroom (5/5) - If you're getting any appetizer here, you cannot go wrong with the crispy mushroom. The texture and flavor is fantastic. A little on the salty side, but it's just so yummy. Traditional Paitan (5/5) - Their ramen is so delicious and it has a good balance of richness and flavor without being too heavy. The beef filet is a nice tender meat and is different from the usual chashu. There's also a good portion of it in proportion to the noodles. I'm also a sucker for truffle, and it is obviously present without being too overwhelming. I also add garlic oil because who doesn't love garlic? My bf got the same dish and also added on the bone marrow which we ended up splitting. I think the bone marrow is good, but I could definitely do without it; it doesn't add much more to the dish that I think is worth an extra $10. Service is quick and on a cold night, they definitely blast the heater in there which is nice. I already came back here a second time within two months because I like it that much. It's good ramen at a no frills type of place, and I would recommend it to my friends.

Back for more ramen but their appetizers are also da bomb! The crispy mushrooms and roasted beef filet are musts to accompany your ramen. Great space, warm service and excellent value.

I've gone a few times recently. I like the traditional paitan with added garlic oil. Beef ramen isn't my go-to, but it's good. I wish the portion were bigger. This is the only ramen I've finished quickly. The egg is done very well. That adds a star.

The food was very good bc my friend and I were shivering when walking in bc it was windy. The service was nice and quick. It's a small little shop and it's quite cozy nothing too special. I enjoyed the beef it was tender and the broth was good.

We came on a Saturday afternoon and there was a mild wait to get into the restaurant. The space inside is small and a bit cramped, but it's not uncomfortable. Service was fast and the employees were nice. I ordered their regular ramen and it was really good!! They have enough meat and the toppings were great. I didn't order their bone marrow add in which looked pretty good/ cool. I really enjoyed their ramen. So much so that I finished the soup. I'd come back.

I wanted to like the food. I truly did. Ushi is located in inner sunset in San Francisco. The restaurant is small and cozy with limited seating. We were greeted by the friendly hostess who offered us a table in lieu of the barstool option. I ordered the beef kara-age as a starter. It's not what I was expecting, but it was tasty. It's a shareable dish, which was the plan. I really like the fact that they included a lemon wedge which we promptly squeezed over these lightly fried beef pieces. Delicious! We ordered the oxtail tomato ramen. Definitely an interesting dish. The broth very much is reminiscent of tomato soup, but with a much lighter touch. The Ramen noodles were al dente, and it was a fight to try to eat the noodles. The oxtail could've been seasoned a tad more, and we found that there was more bone in the bowl than there was actual meat. Here is where the problem is... I ordered the shoyu ramen, and specifically have asked if it could be made mild or if the broth was already spicy. I was assured that they absolutely could make it mild. In my heart of hearts, I knew better, but I was trusting what I was told. Always trust your instincts. Always. Frankly, it was just inedible. The broth was so spicy that neither one of us could eat it. It literally numbed my tongue instantaneously. When the waitress came over to check on us, I asked if this was their mild version and she realized that they had made a mistake and given me The wrong broth. No harm no foul. She brought over a bowl of broth by itself and said to add it to what I was trying to eat. I tasted the bowl of broth and it was just as spicy if not spicier. A second attempt was made to correct the spicy broth and frankly it was just a miserable fail. Adding spicy broth to more spicy broth is not going to tame the flavor. Especially as I discovered that there were tons of jalapeños and other things floating in the broth, which of course add to the heat . I'm not certain why she thought that this could be made in a mild broth, but she should've encouraged me to order the other Ramen dish that I was contemplating when I specifically said I wanted something mild. We definitely felt rushed to eat since they were closing in 40 minutes, and it just wasn't a pleasurable dining experience overall.

Pure umami heaven is how I'd describe this spot. We got the regular traditional paitan with the black garlic sauce and it was simply amazing - super tasty without being overwhelming. The fried mushrooms were a bit of a miss, but the noodle soup more than makes up for it. It's pretty busy but not so busy that you need a waitlist. The inside looks fairly traditional. Would come again!

I started coming to this ramen place a few years ago, and its had its ups and downs. Most recently, I feel like the quality of the food is good again! I came here on a weekend afternooon around 2PM and found seating immediately. Their menu basically has not changed, offering the same appetizers, rice bowls, and classic ramen. My friend tried their Traditional Paitan ramen while I had their Shio ramen. Our ramen came out within 10 minutes. The Shio ramen had clear broth that was not too salty but still deeply flavorful. The portion size was okay, but I was slightly still hungry after my meal. The noodles were perfectly cooked and absorbed the broth well too. Love the atmosphere of this smaller restaurant and the current quality of the place!

The traditional paitan was okay--nothing particularly special--but the fried mushrooms really stood out. My little one loved them too. Seating is limited, and the space feels tight, especially if you have kids or a big family.

One of my go to beef broth ramen places to go to in the Inner Sunset area! Ushi Taro is a small and cozy restaurant that has some limited seats(around 15-20), so not really a great place for huge groups; though they do try to accommodate them. Majority of their dishes are very good and packed with flavor. Service is plenty fast and they offer table QR ordering if you want to as well. They often come by to refill water and/or tea. 1) Beef Karaage(7.5/10) - Super good! The beef version of the typically Japanese chicken karaage. They are lightly battered, crispy and the beef is tender and flavorful. Comes with a lemon wedge to add some acidity to the dish which helps to brighten it up a bit. Great for sharing with the table. 2) Crispy Mushrooms(8/10) - One of my favorite appetizers on the menu! They are lightly battered in tempura and tossed in seasoning. The mushroom's flavor still comes through and there isn't any bad "oil" taste to them. 3) Gyoza(5/10) - Not my favorite version of Gyoza. The gyoza is a bit small and the filling isn't that great(a bit mushy and no distinct texture). The skirt on the gyoza isn't that crispy either. 4) The Spicy Combo(7/10) - A fairly new ramen dish that combines the Spicy Ramen with a Tan Tan beef topping. The combo is a flavor bomb with the spicy beef broth and the flavor packed tan tan beef on top. It spicier than the original spicy ramen one. The spicy miso does over power the beef broth a bit, but overall a very good bowl of ramen if you are looking for something that is spicy and savory! The noodles come out al dente and have a great chew to them. The oyster mushrooms and onsen egg are cooked perfectly; as well as the beef fillets(medium rare), which are very tender. 5) Oxtail Tomato Ramen(6/10) - The broth for this is a bit different than the others. The broth is very thick and tomato forward - kind of reminded me of beef stew. The oxtail is very tender and fall off the bone. It was just a bit too salty for my liking. 6) Hiyashi Chuka(8/10) - Their rendition of the Hiyashi Chuka is one of my favorite dishes here. Very light and refreshing! It is a cold dish and typically comes with a side of the soy sauce+green onions mix to pour over the dish along with a bowl of beef broth. Comes with the toppings of the truffle, onsen egg, oyster mushrooms, medium rare beef fillets and sliced cucumbers. The noodles are chewy and have a bite to them. I typically ask to substitute the soy sauce mix for their ponzu sauce as it adds a tangy undertone to the dish! 7) Original Paitan(7.8/10) - Very rich and creamy beef broth without feeling too heavy. A really well balanced bowl of ramen. Noodles always come out al dente and the toppings are always on par. I would suggest adding the black garlic oil to give the broth a flavor boost.

I was by myself and wanted to have a quick eat. This place has unique ramen so I decided to come again (also SF/bay area only in the US). We were a large group of 15, including several kids, and we completely understand that the restaurant is small and accommodating a group our size can be challenging. We waited in line for almost an hour with around 6 children. During the wait, a staff member named Sue came outside, asked how many people were in our group, and handed us menus. Since it was our first visit, we were naturally asking questions and trying to understand the menu. Unfortunately, throughout the interaction, her body language and expressions felt impatient and unwelcoming. There was visible frustration and eye-rolling, which made us feel uncomfortable rather than welcomed. Even after we were seated, the experience continued to feel tense. One of the toddlers in our group started crying briefly -- something fairly common with young children -- and we were told to "keep it low out of respect." While we absolutely respect other diners, the way it was communicated felt lacking in empathy, especially on a busy Mother's Day with families dining out. A small gesture of kindness or understanding could have gone a long way. Instead, my friend felt compelled to take the child outside, which was disappointing. Additionally, after being seated, we had to remind the staff multiple times to come take our orders. What makes this especially unfortunate is that the ramen itself was truly delicious and lived up to the hype. The food was excellent, which is why this experience was so disappointing overall. I hope management takes this feedback seriously because customer service and hospitality matter just as much as the food experience. Unfortunately, this was not the ideal way to end our Mother's Day celebration.

The cucumbers were super fresh and crunchy, and the miso flavor wasn't overpowering. The hand roll was delicious too -- honestly, if we had a bigger appetite, we probably would've ordered a few more. For mains, we ordered the two most popular dishes: the tsukemen and the mazesoba. The tsukemen noodles were thick and tasty, and the broth was rich and flavorful, but I definitely found myself wishing there were more toppings or flavors to switch things up with each bite. After about halfway through the bowl, it started to feel repetitive just dipping the same noodles into the same savory broth over and over. My friend felt similarly about the mazesoba. It was flavorful at first, but once everything was mixed together, it became a bit heavy toward the end. That said, if you've never tried either dish before, I'd still recommend checking this place out! The restaurant was clean, the service was friendly, and I liked that you could join the waitlist ahead of time. Just be prepared -- parking in the area can be tough. We probably wouldn't come back since the noodle dishes weren't totally our personal preference, but I'm definitely glad we tried it.

The wait for a table was 20 mins or we can share a large table with random people and be seated immediately. We were hungry. We went with the large shared table. Pleasantly, there was more than enough room. There were at least 1-2 seats in between the three groups on each side that were there- a solo diner, a small family of 3, and my group of 4. I ordered the Karaka Spicy, my bf ordered Akamaru Modern, his sister ordered Miso, and I don't remember what her friend got- I think it was also Karaka spicy. My bf and I ordered the Treasure plate on the side to share and a side of spicy paste because I know Japanese spicy is barely spicy (from someone who grew up eating SEA spicy). Karaka Spicy had a nicely balance tonkotsu mouth feel and pork flavor. Broth was a little salty. I was correct to assume that it wasn't spicy because I used half of the side of spicy paste and I still didn't think it was spicy enough. Chashu was cooked fine. Notes: - I wished I would've asked if they could swap the thin noodles for the thick ones. I love the chew thicker noodles provide. - Noodles were cooked al dente. Akamaru Modern tasted very similar to Karaka spicy without the spicy. My bf used the other half of the spicy paste as dip for his toppings. He enjoyed it. Miso was a lighter broth (obvi) with a good umami flavor and was not watered down. Solid. She loved it. I have never seen her finish a whole bowl of ramen before. There was a server in training that took our order with the help of the trainer- he did great. Staff was attentive with our waters. Yelp and Google both had…read moreHinodeya higher rated than Ippudo (I wasn't in the mood to battle whatever mob scene might be happening at Mensho), and this place was literally right across the street from my hotel, so I made a mad dash for this place as it was friggin' cold in SF on a late Spring day. If you try to come here around 6-7pm, there is a long line waiting to get seated, but it moves fast. I kept peeking out of my hotel window and by 7:30pm, line was almost non existent, so that's when I went down to get dinner. When I arrived, I was immediately shown a seat inside. You can sit outside too as lots of tables right on the street but it was way too cold for me. Service was quick and I ordered a Yuzu Zen (vegan) ramen. I wanted to try something different than their signature ramen. This ramen was cooked in the traditional Japanese Buddhist temple way, which was a bonus for me. I am a practicing Buddhist and have meditated at various different temple organizations and I enjoy temple cooking as its usually lighter but still very soul nourishing. The broth is lighter and its a vegan dashi broth and comes with zest of yuzu (its like a Japanese lemon), bamboo shoots, crispy kale and sweet fried tofu. I enjoyed this bowl of noodles with soup and the broth was hot, so it warmed me up. I was not really a fan of the inari (sweet fried tofu) as it was just too sweet for me. Service was a little slow towards the end as I was itching to pay and go for an evening stroll, but otherwise, a good experience. I'd come back again when nearby.

The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy inside, with a nice light seasoning that didn't overpower the dish. The curry sauce was rich, slightly sweet, and had just enough depth to keep you going back for another bite. Portion size was great for the price, and everything came out hot and fresh. The vibe felt cozy and laid-back--nothing fancy, but definitely the kind of place you'd come back to when you're craving something reliable and filling. Only reason it's not a full 5 stars is I wish the curry had a bit more spice or complexity, but that's personal preference. Still, a really enjoyable meal overall and worth checking out.

Came with friends to get a quick dinner before heading to North Beach!…read more The service was great, as the servers checked up on us and took our order swiftly. The ambiance was also quite nice. I enjoyed the wall decor, and the ambiance is a bit darker. As for food, two of my friends got the creamy vegan ramen (they're vegan and vegetarian). My other friend for a pork don with a spicy miso ramen, and I got the gyu-don with a spicy miso ramen. The food was very delicious - everything was cooked well, perfectly flavored. I like the rice plates as they come with a tiny bowl of ramen of your choice :) Overall, we would definitely come back again as we thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience!
